J.Crew's Bubble Necklace: What's the Deal?

Item 92687
Regular: $150.00

A big "thanks!" to Sweetmint who made an excellent observation concerning J.Crew's Bubble Necklace.

In particular, she found two images of the necklace in the catalogs where one of the beads (on the bottom of the necklace) was missing. The images can be found in the America catalog on page 60 and the Liya Kebede catalog on page 54. To view these images, click on the image below or here.

Sweetmint also raised a great question, wondering if anyone had any issues with the beads falling off this particular necklace. I am surprised to see that there are two different instances, where the same necklace is showing an imperfection. It definitely makes me wonder about the quality and durability of this necklace.

What do you think of J.Crew's Bubble Necklace? Have you seen or purchased it? If so, how did you find the quality of the necklace?

  1. Forgot to add that another reason why I love these sweaters is that they are a great length. I'm short, 5'2" and many J Crew sweaters are just too, too long.

J Crew used to make sweaters in petite sizes and I wish they'd do that again.

  2. I don't get the appeal of this necklace. Where would you wear it (besides to a Jcrew photo shoot)?

  3. I actually like a lot of the Jewelry pieces of late, but this one looks very Cheap in person and the colors all look strange- just a bit 'off'. I think what this proves is that J Crew obviously needs to hire a JCA to proof their catalogs!

FYI- I wore my Pearl Cluster bracelet today and got 2 compliments from perfect strangers:)

  4. I really want the dark gray version because it is one of my favorite colors. But, $150 is too much for me. I too wonder if the quality is worth it.
Its a great statement piece but would have to be used sparingly.

Can anyone comment on the dark gray version? I have only seen the new peachy version in stores.

  5. I have and love the grey version. It is pricey, but goodness, it is so lovely in person. Haven't had it for long, so I can't comment on the wear, but I do love it so far.

  6. Twiga, that is SUCH a good point - I'm sure many JCA's would snap up that opportunity! ;)

I saw this as a return in my B&M and was taken aback by how huge it is. I got a greeney teal version from Target for $3.98 or something that is much smaller and more manageable for my frame.

  7. I love the bubble necklace and have worn it to work, hanging out with friends and to run errands. It's a very versatile necklace, not too heavy and very distinctive. I've had no problems with quality or beads falling off. I would safely say based on price per wear that it was worth the money. I looked at the knock off at Target and there is no comparison. Click through my blog for me wearing it: www.thebestjoyce.blogspot.com

  8. I have the turquoise and black and have had no quality issues. I also don't think I have ever owned a piece that gets more compliments!

  9. JC probably used the very same necklace in both photo shoots, not even noticing the missing piece. Even if someone at the photo shoot had noticed it, they probably thought the beads were "random" enough that it wouldn't be noticeable.
It is very expensive, especially since just about every store in the mall has a version, from high-end to low.

  10. I think it is hilarious that some of you must go through the catalog with a fine toothed comb just to look for things like this! Bored much?

  11. Anon @ 7:56, I seriously doubt anyone would go through the catalog just to find errors. It seems more likely that someone just noticed it while just flipping through and looking at the photos, especially if they were interested in that particular necklace. Stuff like that happens to me sometimes when I am browsing the website, and I come across a "pinning" or styling trick.

  12. I have last years turquoise version which has these little gold decorative doily- beads on top of each of the dangly beads. A number of the dangly beads have fallen off but I've managed to not lose them and put them back on. Unfortunately I have lost several of the tiny doily beads but that's not very noticeable unless you look very closely.

I get a ton of compliments on this necklace but I would rate it as extremely fragile since the wires that hold the dangly beads on are not secure and stretch out of shape over time. While I never more it casually because of how delicate it was I now only save it for special occasions.
I bought it for full price directly from the catalog and wish my money had bought more secure fittings for the dangly beads.

  13. Speaking of JCrew jewelry quality, does anyone have JCrew jewelry that has tarnished? I received a necklace for Christmas that has a "gold" bee on it, which started to tarnish @ 2 months ago. I don't know if I should return it or what (I have the gift receipt). It's too bad, because it's a cute necklace.

  14. I will never understand why you ladies keep defective items rather than returning them! I know its disappointing to part with something you really like (I parted ways with two smoke bead necklaces with the gold flower), but if its defective, no one should be paying full price or even a sale price, because those prices are for quality goods.

    Off-the-soapbox.

I own the grey version of the bubble necklace. I love the color of the beads and like Joyce, I wear this necklace everywhere. My only criticism of the necklace is that mine has a lobster clasp rather than the JC signature clasp (life preserver). The signature clasp is very easy to open. The lobster clasp, not so much.

  15. Whoever runs JC's photo shoots needs to be replaced. It appears the genius has managed to twice photograph a model wearing a broken necklace. Yes, I think its the same necklace, photographed twice.

Did you notice how the Liya photos were styled much like those taken earlier with other models. I thought that was a disappointing aspect of the Liya shoot.

  16. Anon@8:53 - yes, I got the dog charm bracelet last fall (2007) and after about 6 months it started to tarnish/wear off. I guess I did get quite a lot of wear out of it, but I wouldn't have expected that to happen *so* quickly for $80. I still wear it because I love it, but it is a bummer. I had the same thing happen to ring I got at Banana Republic last spring - the underside turned to copper within 3 months. Maybe that's because of hand lotion, but still... That's why my latest ring purchase was from Forever21. When it breaks or tarnishes, I will probably be at about 10 cents/wear, and I can live with that. (I have pics on my blog from the F21 outing if you are curious - their quality can be dubious, and you have to look carefully, but it's not a bad place for semi-disposable jewelry.)

  17. Re: Bubble Necklace -- I own the Cobalt blue and the Black faceted bubble necklaces -- love both and it's the epitome of statement jewlery. However, in the case of BOTH, I have lost a bead off each -- after just one wearing. They are delicate necklaces for sure. Repairing is not too hard but for the money I paid, I have to say I was surprised they "broke" so easily and quickly. I love the GREY color but I have thought twice about every buying aother one of these at full price -- however, as you know, they hardly ever go on sale!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I got the turquoise bubble necklace last year. A bead fell off the first time I wore it. I took it to a local jeweler who was able to repair it.
I like the look of many J.Crew pieces but have had problems with things just falling off (i.e. starfish cuff, orbit ring). For the prices they charge for costume jewelry, the quality really needs to be better.
Like many other posters, I have gravitated to Target's 'get the look' pieces for a fraction of the cost.

  19. i think the necklace is lovely but i wouldn't pay that much...it's not that lovely :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Why would you pay a jeweler to repair a necklace rather than taking it back to JCrew and asking them to repair or replace it? Even without a receipt, it is obvious when a piece is JCrew.

  21. I love their necklaces, and I want that Grey bubble necklace just based on the photos Joyce has posted!! I think this is a real statement piece. However, as for the quality comments, I have quite a few pieces of J.Crew jeweley and haven't had a problem with it, but then again I do think most jewelery is fragile even whether it is high end costume jewelery or J.Crew. I also have had Marni necklaces where pieces fell off and had to return them.

I think they must have had an intern on the photo proofing- I think most people who are used to proofing catalogues and work regularly with printed material would have easily caught these errors. I've worked in publishing and it is amazing what you get trained to do-my eyes zoom in on errors in mags/catalogues out of habit all the time.

  22. A lot of the accessories and clothes used on shoots are passed around and handled for weeks & even months. We've seen minor defects in the merchandise shown in catalogs before. That particular necklace could've been featured in previous catalogs and might have been a prototype in the first place. So it's missing a bead - 99% of the catalog viewers are not going to sweat it. If the shot featured the necklace exclusively, then there would be a problem.

  23. I can't believe people would pay the crazy prices for cheap J.Crew jewelry. There is the odd piece that may be worth it IMO, but this one that loses stones is no way worth $150. I think it looks cheap with the plastic bubbles.

Mind you, I have the same feeling about the cheap shoes and yet some fall all over themselves to get them.

In my book, if it's not quality it stays at the store, no matter how cute. Disposable jewelry indeed! What a waste of your hard-earned money.

  24. 7:56 some people pay much more attention to detail than others do and I'm guessing you're one who does not. I've seen plenty of things in J.Crew catalogs and online, that should never have may it through proofing. Hopefully you are not a doctor, lawyer, etc. if you think details are for people who are bored.

  25. My turquoise one also lost a bead, so sad. I have been looking out for similar beads to replace it. I got mine on sale and $150 is way too much, though I do love the grey as well! I might have to get that coral one from etsy, $55 totally worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I've had the coral one since last spring and I've given it some major wear and tear. I wear it at least every couple of weeks, have banged it into my desk, dropped it on the floor after a night out with one too many drinks, packed it in a suitcase, and gotten it snagged on a box I was carrying. It is STILL in perfect condition and looks as great as the day I bought it. It has not tarnished, broken, and I get compliments on it every single time I wear it. It *was* expensive at the time, but now that I look back on it, it's one of my favorite pieces that I know I will have a long time. I get lots of "ooo, is that vintage" questions from people who aren't as JCrew savvy as the rest of us.

  27. That's hilarious...so extremely obvious in the pictures!

  28. I have the black one and got it for a steal on FS. I have to say when I received it I was surprised at how cheap it looked compared to some of my other J Crew jewelry -- however -- I have to say I still love the necklace. I have worn it with a white tee shirt, black/white stripe work blouse, and with my black Madeline. Since this necklace has so many danglies, I am actually happy they used the light plastic baubles - otherwise it would be way too heavy. I would love the papaya version but I think that was from last year and when one pops up on eBay it goes for way way too much. Bummer!

  29. i'm a BIG fan of j crew jewelry because it's so unique. in my job i can't wear big earrings or big necklaces, so i love that a jcrew ring or bracelet dresses up an outfit beautifully. i've recd so many compliments on j crew rings.

that being said, i once again am deeply disappointed with jcrew's declining quality. i got the orbit ring and one of the "diamond" crystals fell off within days. i can't find a replacement so it has a noticeable "hole".
got a crystal flower ring and it *arrived* with one stone out. these days i'm so scared i wear the rings sparingly. defeats the point doesn't it?
my great-grandmother's rings are whole and kicking, nearly 100 years later, but jcrew falls apart in days!

  30. Were the black , turquoise and gray released at the same time ?
I never got to see the black/turquoise bubble necklace in person.

  31. -lucegirl,
there were posts in this week's exchange about people making copies on etsy.com and such, i went and looked and the coral copy looks pretty close. search for "jcrew bubble" in etsy, hopefully it will come up. i think the designer mentions that she can make it in turquoise and other colors. Good luck!

  32. After seeing Joyce's post on the gray bubble necklace, i bought it during a %20 percent off sale. I love it, get tons of compliments and haven't had any problems with quality. I wear it at least once a week. It's great. In additon, i own several pieces of Jcrew's jewelry and the only problem I had with tarnishing was with the park avenue charm bracelet. I treat the jewelry for what it is:costume jewelry. I don't get it wet or apply lotions or perfumes on my pieces. I store them individually in the boxes they came in, away from direct sunlight.

  35. I bet Sweetmint used to do a lot of "spot the difference" when she was little =) Great job though...very keen observation! I have been satisfied with Jcrew jewelry so far. I havent purchased this particular necklace though so cant make any comments on it.

  36. I create Web sites for a living, so I think I'm just used to noticing imperfections in images online. :) I love J. Crew's jewelry (except for a few items here and there), and definitely don't set out to find mistakes just to point a finger at them. This just really stuck out to me.

  37. I just got the new palm leaf necklace and it is stunning! Last year I ordered the turtle bauble necklace and have worn it a thousand times with tons of compliments. It has held up wonderfully

  38. Unfortunately jewelry that has those round links to hold pieces will and can fall off. Price really does not matter. I usually use a tool to close them tighter to secure them from snags and falling off.
I personally think JC costume jewelry is too expensive for the quality. The Bubble necklace looks very nice on Joyce and Patina.
I do think JC has great eye catching pieces just not worth full price in my opinion.
I have purchased the twisted crystal, a gold link necklace and the too gold semi gaudy bauble necklace which looks like
Christmas tree bulbs LOL. I use them for layering with other pieces. I purchased all of them on deep discount. I will not wear these pieces against my skin because I am sure they will more than likely tarnish over time. They do serve their purpose since I have yet to invest in a long 14 or 24 karat gold necklace. I know that I will one day soon. We all have different taste and should have fun with fashion.

  39. I own dozens of J Crew jewelry items, and I have yet to have a problem with any of them. No tarnishing, or falling off *yet* and I have to say I'm in love with their jewelry because it's funky, unique, but not dowdy and old lady looking like many retail stores jewelry lines are. It's the perfect mesh of trendy meets grown-up. BIG fan <3

*IF* anyone wants to part ways with a Papaya bubble necklace, I would love to buy it from you. I've been on a desperate search for one since mine was stolen last August!

    Thank you so much!

  40. Hi to everyone. I just have a quick questions to those whose beads had fallen off. I just purchased a bangle with crystals and 2 I noticed have fallen off. Do I just take it to a jeweller? Will they find a crystal for it? I don't have the crystal that fell off. I appreciate your help guys. Please let me know.
