J.Crew's Fall 2009 Collection For Men

In a previous post ("J.Crew's Newest Arrivals For Fall 2009 {yey!}"), a few images of the Fall 2009 Collection for Men were shown. Luckily for us, over at the Kempt blog (click here), several images of the Men's Fall 2009 Collection can be seen. The blog also shares the following:

The Old Crew

The folk at J.Crew have been on quite a hitting streak lately, and it look like they have every intent of keeping it going.

We got our hands on their latest fall catalog, and once again, we’re impressed. There are the usual assortment of old school ties and cardigans that J. Crew made their name on, but this time there’s a more rustic edge too, with a few of the usual easy-iron button-ups traded for chambray workshirts.

As usual, the real gems are in the collaborations. They keep up old collabs with Mackintosh Coats and Alden Shoes, but our favorite is the boots from W. C. Russell Moccasin Company out of Berlin, Wisconson of all places. It would be a pretty good find for a boutique, but for a national brand it’s practically a statement of principles.

Bringing heritage brands onto a larger stage is what the workwear movement is all about…and bringing a bit more chambray into the world isn’t so bad either.

It looks like there will be lots of great items in store for the guys this Fall. Wahoo! :)

What are your thoughts on the pieces? Do you like or dislike? ;) What are you hoping to see in Fall 2009?

  1. The plaid shirts pictured look neat (not that I need any more) but I'm especially looking forward to seeing the collaborations with Alden and the W. C. Russell Moccasin Company.

Speaking of collaborations, I wonder if there'll be another Timex watch? I vaguely remember reading something implying that the endlessly promoted Timex military watch was the beginning of a series.

  2. I want the men's penny loafers for myself. :D JCrew used to make men's styled oxfords and loafers for women, they need to bring 'em back! (I still wear my ladies mens styled loafers from 8/9 years ago!) So sick of ballet flats, bedazzled sandals and flimsy driving mocs. The Fall 08/Iceland spread had a female model wearing men's oxfords-- so maybe jcrew will be bringing them back for the ladies?

  3. Well, as a woman, I love it! It's funny, I've found myself more drawn to the mens pictorals in the catalogs than the womens. I think it's because they do more interesting layering in the "model/on location" shots...This look for 2009 takes a lot of inspiration from The Satorialist site.

  4. Thanks for posting something about the men's collection--you have aficionados who visit your site too.

I'm interested in getting a closer look at that red coat, which looks like it may be some sort of rain gear. I'd also like to see more Timex watches, but if I could make a suggestion to Andrew, an authentic vintage Timex is another way to go, and they are reasonably priced and not too hard to come by on eBay (I have several).

  5. I agree, the men's collaborations are pretty awesome. I like the Thomas Mason shirts and also like that they carry Red Wing boots - cool!

  6. Jeff - can we enjoy summer first?! I'm not ready to think about getting bundled up! In the northeast, we have barely "unbundled" yet.

  7. Funny how the men's interest postings get so few comments. Guys, where are u? Anyway, I'm a J Crew dude, and I'm here to support. Great job, as always Alexis!

Anyway, I'm waiting to see if JC puts into production the cordorvan colored Clifton oxfords. These shoes were featured in a Spring/Summer pictorial, but when I contacted JC, they said these never made it to production. Some items, they said, are used in spreads but then never see the real world.

Anyway, kudos to J Crew for an ever improving men's wear line. Quality pieces and classic looks. Or maybe I'm just brainwashed by all of the Mickey-speak.

PS..I've also noticed how much JC is pushing that Timex watch. I'd pick it up, if it wasn't $150. Just seems like a lot for a quartz Timex. I'd say $75 is a fair price. And even that is a bit much...

  8. cortney_joy: Oh, I thought that was another Spring line.

  9. What is this "workwear movement"? Is it a contrived effort to look like you do alot more "old-fashioned man stuff" (mowing lawn, raking leaves, etc.) than you actually do? Or is it just another way to say "Grandpa-chic" (or "Dad-chic" for some of us)? I always knew my Dad was the coolest guy around; now I have proof!

  10. Regarding Timex watches, why not just go buy one in any store or online from Timex? Many of the current models look very classic (or vintage), and are under $100. I got one last week at a Timex outlet for $50, and it looks great. What would make a vintage one better? Just curious...

  11. To me this looks like the same old men's line that J.Crew always produces and I'm fine with that. I just wish there would be some promos for men once in a while.

I bought the Red Wing rugged classic boots for my husband and he tried them on and they went straight back in the box to be returned. They were unlined, which wasn't a showstopper, but the tongue is stitched to the boot halfway up and it made it difficult for him to get his foot in with just dress socks, never mind thicker socks. They really weren't anything special, even if they had fit.

Some Assembly Required - that read coat looks like a Members Only jacket. LOL

  12. Some Assembly Required: I would like an authentic vintage watch, I just haven't gotten around to finding the perfect one for me yet. I do have a plain white Timex that I got at Target for $27 that I like to wear with different fabric straps from J. Crew and Brooks Brothers.

$150 is definitely a little high for the JC Timex. I got mine in December with a 30% off + free shipping code, so it wasn't quite as bad.

Speaking of collaborations, why can't J. Crew offer Converse Jack Purcells in size 13 (or better yet, 12.5)?

  13. if you put the j. crew timex watch and an original vintage timex military watch side by side, i guarantee you that you'll prefer the j. crew version. the vintage watch is tiny, the face/case is so small it looks very feminine. i bought one on ebay and turned around and sold it the next day. also, i think the silver casing really adds to the watch. the timex that is closest to the j. crew version has a black plastic case and it looks very cheap.

i will agree that $150 is steep, but i sold my vintage timex for $120 so it was well worth the extra $30.

  14. i like the red jacket too, it doesn't look like a members only jacket. i've never seen a members only jacket with four pockets like that.

  15. Maybe it isn't exactly the same style as MO but every woman I know who has seen the red jacket has laughed at it. Now, it's only a few friends really, but I would never be able to see a red jacket like that without thinking MO. Maybe the other colors...

  16. I had to google members only to find out what you guys are talking about. the jacket isn't the same, but it sorta has that same vibe to it, no?

  17. I think J. Crew does men's Fall best. However, their summer stuff for men is ALWAYS BAD.

  18. Andrew, Piperlime has Converse Jack Purcells in size 13, in stock and free shipping, and only $50. They don't come with the fraying that JCrew's version has, but that's something that should come with wear 'n tear anyway.

  19. Yeah, I have navy JPs in 13 from piperlime and I love them! It's not the "broken-in" ones from JC that I'm missing out on as much as the tartan or madras ones. - I haven't seen anything like that anywhere else.
