J.Crew Email: Free shipping for the kids

"Thanks!" to many of you who let us know about J.Crew's latest promotion.

J.Crew is offering free shipping on all Crewcuts orders (with no minimum). No code is necessary, as this offer is automatically applied at checkout. (Side Note: Dear J.Crew, could you please bring back "automatically applied" promotions for all offers? Clearly your new website is capable of this functionality. Your customers, like me, would love to see it back.) :)

This offer has been around for awhile- I believe since April. Too bad there wasn't something similar for regular J.Crew orders- I would be all over it! ;) But in all honesty, this promotion has me wondering if Crewcuts is performing well. Despite all the great press from First Daughters Sasha & Malia Obama wearing Crewcuts (refer to "J.Crew Travels to Moscow" as one example), J.Crew is reducing their expansion of Crewcuts- opening only 1 store this year and keeping it to mainly online/catalog (refer to "J.Crew's First Quarter Fiscal 2009" post).

Have you been taking advantage of this promotion? When do you think this offer will end? Do you think the Crewcuts line is fairing well during these economic times?

  1. I haven't bought Crewcuts for my daughter in a long time. I used to buy her stuff there all the time from when it first debuted until around 2008 but I have found other deals on just as cute of clothes for less recently.

I would have placed an order for myself this morning if there would have been free shipping for adults. I was already to check out and almost pulled the trigger but $14.50 for shipping a couple of lightweight items seemed silly. I ordered from Boden instead. Flat rate was so nice!

  2. I had the same thought - I want some itmes, but I don't need them enough to justify 22.50 shipping charges.

  3. I recently took advantage of the free shipping for crewcuts (twice, as a matter of fact), because some of the newer tees for girls were a great price and adorable styles and colors. I couldn't find similar stuff at Boden, Olive Juice, or Target (Gap is just cut too big for DD), so I took the plunge.

What reminded me of why I don't shop there that often is while the clothes are very cute and the colors are unique, the fabric is thin, and it doesn't look like it will hold up with multiple washes. I usually try to hang dry most of the delicate shirts, but c'mon, with kids? I would have a whole clothesline full of just Crewcuts stuff! DS only is a fan of their tees and I find their designs for boys not as exciting as their choices for girls.

Getting a few items reminded me that while I love the crewcuts style, if longevity is what I am looking for, I better stick to other stores. I'm pleased with the promo, but I have to rethink "drinking the crewcuts crewlade" too....

  4. Sorry, forgot to add that while I appreciate the free shipping, I have found some pretty incredible deals from boden and olivejuicekids (their outlet has wonderful basics). I have friends who still shop at Gymboree for their younger kids (I couldn't deal with the idiotic "gymbucks") and say that their sales are good as well.

So maybe crewcuts pricepoint still needs to be examined for most folks to be regulars :).

  5. I'm not really impressed by the quality of some Crewcuts especially their tees. My daughter has few tees that have holes in them from washing. Not worth paying $12+ for tees where there are cuter, better quality out there.
My 3 yr old girl does want the cute beaded bracelet though I don't want to pay $10.50 + tax.

  6. I wondered if Crewcuts sales were suffering myself. The store I shop at will no longer carry crewcuts. The SA didn't go into why, just that everything was on sale and had the extra 20% off promotion. Last time I was in there there were very few items left. I did pick up my nephews some cute t-shirts and boxers, but I doubt I would have paid full price for either of them. Making lemonade out of lemons...I am now hoping that with the extra space the store will start carrying women's shoes :)

  7. I'm not really up on any crewcuts news because I don't have kids, but just wanted to say I really WISH they would run this promo for adults! Or even just lower the minimum on the free shipping promos they DO give...but I know I'm preaching to the choir here!

  8. I purchase a fair amount of crewcuts- but only on sale. I stocked up big time last year when they had a 50% off sale at the end of the season! My SA recently informed me that J crew is taking Crewcuts out of 8 stores Nationwide including the North Avenue store in Chicago. I am hoping that they use this new floor space to bring back shoes:)

  9. I've noticed that Jcrew has started to limit the availability of free ship codes. I usually get one with my catalog in the mail but no such luck lately. Perhaps they are noticing the "ride alongs" and returns in some orders, or maybe they want to maximize margins on their astronomical shipping rates.

  10. I buy crewcuts occasionally but only when the prices are low. I've gotten some great deals on short sleeve and long sleeve T shirt basics. I like their styles but can't justify full price if they will grow out of it soon enough. However if there is a great product, I will buy it on first markdown. Last year, I got both my kids the sherpa lined fleece jackets and they wear them all the time!

Still, its nice to know that the free shipping is still continuing.

  11. My Dream.....

All I want is an email that reads:

A Special One (or Two or even Three) Day Event:

Free Shipping for all our JCrew Cardholders!

  12. I love the crewcuts line. The quality of most items is great, but the prices can be steap. I have taken advantage of the free shipping and grabbed a few things from the sale section.

  13. I do buy the Crewcuts for my little guy, but only when prices have been slashed significantly. Just like the adult lines, I love the unique stlye. And knowing that Crewcuts isn't widely available, my son doesn't end up looking like every other kid on the playground. But, I can't justify paying over 20$ for a tee my boy may only wear less than one season. I think I will continue have a lot of Crewcuts in the closet, but a lot of that is being purchased off of E-bay.

That said, the online sales in conjunction with the free shipping website now offers has lured me in more recently. I only purchase sale items, and usually try to wait for the 20% promotions. Waiting and plotting usually pays off. I just ordered the cotton shawl cardi for my son that was orig. $58.99 for only $13.40!! I think it was a fluke though, because now I notice the same sweater in the same colors/sizes is back up to $39.99 again :(

  14. I find the Crewcuts line to be expensive, even on sale, and even at the outlet! I just cannot justify more than $10 for a shirt. I shop for most of my daughter's clothes at Kohl's, where I can get great 30% off deals and the quality is great. I also shop Gap on sale and Children's Place.

I do think some of their stuff is cute and wish they would offer adult versions of some of their skirts.

  15. I'm with Jacqueln,
$20 for a kids tee...No Way! I will pay that for one of JCrew's sweaters for her but I have never paid mor than $10 for a tee. Kohl's is great. My daughter does have lots of Crewcuts but at deep discounted prices only. I bought her Wellies for $11....I got her two pair for that price. One for now and one to grow into....Just doesn't make sense for growing children to spend that kind of money. When she is full grown...no problem but until then...it is only Crewcuts at bargain basement prices!

  16. I have been buying a lot of Crewcuts items lately. I think their styles are very cute and unique (I don´t see other kids dressed like my daughter) and they carry items that are otherwise hard to find for kids(such as all leather cute ballet flats). However, I only focus on certain items (shorts, some T-shirts with unique cute designs) and buy most expensive items on sale. I agree with some JCAs that some of the fabrics are waaay too thin. I had to return a very cute white dress last spring because of this reason - I wasn´t too happy about everyone seeing my daughter´s underwear-. My daughter is super careful with her clothing (she´s used to wearing 300+ euro dresses) so I am not too concerned about holes in her dresses or T-shirts. Overall, I like Crewcuts and think it´s good quality for the price and has cute styling.

  17. Just wondering, ladies -- can adult clothes "ride along" with a Crewcuts order and therefore get the free shipping?? My sons (ages 19 and 22) are a bit big for Crewcuts sizes ;-), but I have a precious niece for whom I could find an early birthday present. Honest, cross my heart, she exists. :-)

  18. NO, you will be charged shipping for non crewcut items. Nice try:)
Of course, JCrew is "on to this one"!

  19. semi-related:

The crewcuts kid models are soo cute! I wonder if they are pros, or if they are kids of JC staff (or the adult JC models)?

  20. I really like Crewcuts for my kids, and occasionally I will buy something unique at full price (like the mermaid tee). My daughter loves loves loves this tee and as soon as it is washed it goes right back on.

The only thing with my kids is that they are quite skinny, so I have to size way down in the shorts and skirts. Even the elastic waist doesn't come tight enough! And forget pants, unless there is a real drawstring (banned!) they can't fit into them.

I like the quality of the items for the most part. I'm kinda sick of the bohemian Gap trend and Gymboree is only good for jammies and leggings (again with the skinny kids problem). I shop religiously at consignment stores so I can get awesome deals there without even setting foot in the mall!
