Solange Knowles Spotted Wearing J.Crew Collection Skirt

"Thanks!" to D*ska (in this post), who shared the image above of Solange Knowles, during Coachella 2013 (image from The Citizens of Fashion "Solange Knowles, in J.Crew and Alice + Olivia, with Marni sunglasses." post).

Solange was wearing J.Crew's Collection Leather Skirt in Hibiscus Floral (item 74681) that retails... wait for it... $1,200!!! Yeah, that skirt is worth a whole lot of money. So much, that I would be very worried about sitting anywhere at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Annual Festival in fear of getting it dirty. (Which seems like it would be more about cheap jean cut offs and v-neck tees. Not pricey collection items.)

Solange Knowles is no stranger to J.Crew. She was the face of Madewell, J.Crew's sister company, last year (refer here). Plus, she is buddies with J.Crew's Jenna Lyons (refer here). Which makes me wonder if she got some former-employee-discount with the Crew.

What are your thoughts on the skirt? Do you like the way Solange is rocking the skirt? Would you consider getting it (if you had some spare cash laying abouts)?

  1. I think the skirt is pretty and Solange looks great. She's very fashion forward and I always admire her outfits, even though they aren't things I'd choose for my closet.

I think though that this proves the point some of us were trying to make in yesterday's post about Jenna. This is a $1,200 leather skirt printed with huge pink flowers. How many people can afford that and also have a lifestyle in which it fits? A small handful, like Solange who is young, well to do and in a creative field. J. Crew is leaning more and more toward these pieces, largely due to Jenna's influence.

  2. I think Solange looks very nice but I cannot believe the price point of that skirt since it is sooooo trendy. I guess if you have the $$$$ and the lifestyle for it then go for it. I just hope Jenna can continue to design for the average J Crew consumer who actually made J Crew what it is today. This blog and others made J Crew a cult, not Jenna Lyons.

  3. This post is well timed. I am getting ready to go to New Orleans for Jazzfest. Usually getting ready has meant finding rubber flipflops, unstained tanks, shorts I can still fit into, bucket hat and new tube of sunscreen. How little I knew! I must rush out and invest in a dainty white leather skirt and floppy white linen halter, and hope that if it rains, the enthusiastic dancers don't splash too much mud on me - it can get pretty soggy out there. And what will I wear on the 2d, 3d and 4th days? This classing up is complicated. I just want to listen to music with a can of something cold in my hand.

    1. Oh, WFF--love this! Have a blast! Your post brings to mind a photo I have from a trip to JazzFest during college; a group of friends and I had our picture taken with an older lady at the festival. Thankfully, her t-shirt photographed clearly; it read, 'I can't stand no broke a** man.' Clearly, you'll want to be dressed to impress.

  4. I'm guessing Ms. Knowles, with her connections, might have better seats than the average attendee? I would also need a couple dozen spare $1200's lying around, as Ms. Knowles also probably has, in order to consider adding a skirt at that price point to my life. :)

  5. I think that skirt is really cute on Solange, and I especially like it with the black and white top in the J. Crew styling. The leather ruins it for me though, makes it NOT a wearable piece, not to mention the CRAZY price. Wish they would have done this in cotton or some other material.

  6. I'm sure Solange could afford to buy this, but given the crazy publicity that celebs at Coachella get, I wouldn't be terribly surprised if it were a gift from J Crew. I mean, a leather floral skirt? It's gonna get photographed and talked about. Publicity!

  7. Thanks for the shout-out Alexis.

If I did have that sort of spare change laying around I wouldn't consider this skirt. I think it would have draped better and be more versatile in another fabric. The length verges on frumpy for anyone not model height. Plus I'm not big on floral prints and I rarely find ones that I like. This is not one of them. Perhaps in another color palette. Moot point though since that sort of frivolous money eludes me.

Totally agree with Danielle. I think J.Crew comped this piece for Ms. Knowles.

  8. I beg to disagree, I don't find the skirt pretty. It's too bright, too long & not doing her any favors. She looks out of place and stiff amidst the crowds who seem to be having more fun. At that price point, I expect that skirt to have magical powers and do the house chores for me.

    1. ITA, Marie. She's an attractive woman, but you'd never know it from that picture. The skirt is not flattering at all. That mid calf length is very hard to wear without looking dowdy. The halter and shoes don't do her any favors either.

  9. I also think she's a pretty girl, but this outfit does her no favors. The top in particular is ill-fitting and droopy. She is tall enough to make the skirt work, but obviously she should have paired it with a striped/sequinned/chambray shirt ;)

  10. Good call, Cate--a chambray shirt would've looked much better. I don't like the skirt, and wouldn't buy it even if it were $50. I am not a huge fan of neon brights, though I think Solange can pull it off better than most. This skirt actually reminds me of one of JCrew's old school linen skirts that I see pop up on Ebay from time to time. I have never felt the need to bid on one. Marie, you are right also; I looked back at the picture and she DOES look stiff compared to the other people we see. I am sure it is hot and sticky out there. Who would feel comfortable in a long leather skirt??

    1. I didn't notice the other people at first glance. She doesn't fit in at all in that venue. I think it's fine to want to dress nicer than the norm, but she just looks silly standing there in that get-up. Just because it costs $1200 doesn't mean it looks good. I would feel so embarrassed to be dressed like that there. She should have saved this for Fashion Week.

Here is the one I was thinking of. Aren't the prints very similar?

    1. I would wear that one on eBay, it's really cute. The prints are similar, I agree, but the execution is so different.

  12. Yes, I actually like that one on Ebay too. The cut of it is adorable, but the print is just ok to me. It's just not something I 'have to have', especially not a $1200 version of it. I just looked at the picture yet again and noticed the girl who is lying on the ground. Haha! Yet another limitation of the skirt. But I guess if I had a lot of money, pricey clothes wouldn't be as cherished.

  13. I really love that skirt. I can't afford it, but I do love it.
