J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. OT, ladies check your mail. I received a J Crew Jewels catalogue yesterday that has a 20% off promo code on the back. I almost threw it out before I saw the note on the back.

  6. I bought the Stripe Drawstring Dress from the latest rollout last week and, unfortunately, it's going back. The cotton is super soft and it would probably be flattering on a short-waisted pear-shaped figure, but it didn't do anything for mine. I would also recommend going down a size since there is plenty of extra fabric at the waist, but you would probably lose a little length in the torso.

Two items that I LOVE and are now on Final Sale are the Tresco Floral Liberty Miniskirt and the Collection Cashmere Broken Stripe Sweater. The colors on both are bright and happy and gorgeous - just right for Spring! I think that the mini runs slightly large, but I like the extra length that I get from the larger size anyway. The Broken Stripe Cashmere sweater is shaped like the merino Tippi sweaters, so buy your regular size. Both are terrific quality (I've worn the sweater 3 times already and not a pill in sight), and I'm really pleased that I got them at such a good price!

    1. I agree w/ Whitney, Tresco mini does run slightly large. I tried to size up for length but it just looked sloppy. It's so pretty, too.

    2. I love that skirt! Wish they made it 2 inches longer.

  7. I have recently found 2 navy schoolboy blazers on a resale site - one is size 10 and one is size 8. The one that is size 10 is from around 2009 and the size 8 is the newer version I think (2 pockets on the right side). Anyway - not sure about what size I might be. I wear a size 10 in the perfect shirt - wondering if they are comparable. I am 5'7", 160 lbs and tend to have slightly wider shoulders. Thanks for any help!

    1. I think we are close to the same size (I'm usually an 8/10, once in a while a 6) and I can go with either 8 or 10 in the J. Crew schoolboys. I have narrow-ish shoulders and find that the 8 just fits in my shoulders, so you might want to go with a 10 just for comfort...I own both 8s and 10s in J. Crew blazers and I don't find the 10s look too loose or sloppy in the body. Hope this helps :)

I have a couple posts on my blog in J. Crew schoolboy blazers (both size 8) in case it's helpful :)

    2. I'm wearing the 2009 navy schoolboy today. I wear a 6 in perfect shirts but needed an 8 in the schoolboy to accommodate my shoulders. I'm 5'6" and around 140. You might be OK with the 10, but would probably be more comfortable in the 12. Not sure how the newer version fits. Good luck!

  8. A quick plug for the painter boatneck button tee in multistripe, still available in some sizes/colors in the sale section online ($29.99 before discount). It's a nicely fitted tee that's entirely office-appropriate under a blazer or with a pencil skirt. Works just as well with more casual bottoms. The gold-tone buttons on the shoulder are pretty subtle.

  9. Ouuu! I got the Dree Dress in stripe in Cerulean Blue. So cute! Found it fit true to size, but is very short, which is okay by me for hot summer nights :) Here's the review http://rufflesandsequins.blogspot.ca/2013/04/darling-dree-dress-from-j-crew.html

My schoolboy blazer size is the same as my perfect shirt size. JC's perfect fit shirts & blazers are usually too restrictive in the shoulders, across the back of the shoulders, & sometimes too tight in the upper arm for me if I try the next size down. I'm also 5'7" w/what I think are standard size shoulders for my frame, carrying a little extra weight & wear a perfect shirt size 6. Hth

Ask the seller for measurements to help you decide on the size. (I'd try to get a armhole circumference measurement too, since they can be cut small.)

    1. Thanks so much! I am planning to ask for shoulder measurement across the back. Armhole circumference is a great idea.

  11. Today I got a silk-collar tee - the thickness of the material and overall fit is very flattering for stomach lumpiness. Very happy with it and considering also getting the grey. Also I'm definitely taking it to a B&M to price adjust because of the new sale.

I also got a neon pink gingham boy shirt on popback - wayyy too neon pink (I probably should have guessed that). Unfortunately was final sale. If any of you have styling tips for it, I would be so grateful!

    1. I ordered it too awhile back and it is very bright. Neon pink gingham shirt looks cute under the pink heart tippi it you happen to have that. I like it with a navy tippi and white jeans. It would look cute solo with white or denim shorts. Old navy has a tan sweater with a pink heart that might be cute too. HTH

    2. Thanks so much for the ideas! I'm definitely going to try it with white pants/shorts and a navy sweater.

  12. Are swimsuit separates running large this year, or is it just me? I ordered the rope stripe bikini in small and it was huge! The stripe bandeau one piece, however, was a winner, I scored it on a popback after seeing shopping with m's review. Love it! Fits true to size and is very flattering. It is my first one piece in ages!!!
Stopped in at my local B&m today and they had 25% off linen shirts and 30% off sale (final sale). The SA confirmed new arrivals next Wednesday!

    1. Anything linen? Wanted to pick up a few more linen tees?

    2. I didn't notice any signs by the linen tees, but I think there may have been a promo on some tees. The signs for 25% off were by the button down linen shirts. I got the green polka dot one and it is super cute. I know the chino shorts were on promo for 35. Sorry I don't have better info, I had both my kiddos with me and it was a bit chaotic :)

  13. Liberty Perfect Shirt in the happy, popular tresco floral went on sale today, for $70 after the 30% off promo. I bought this at full price (with one of the early 20% off promos) a while back and love this shirt. In my opinion, definitely a great buy at $70!

    1. I second that. I got it for $100 (promo and rewards), and I have really liked it. It's a shirt that definitely gets noticed!

  14. I've been super happy with J. Crew Factory lately (and trying to shop there more than retail because of prices). A couple reviews, and all these items are styled in my blog post here.

    - Skinny jeans in white: I have the poppy/orange version as well and I LOVE these jeans. The fit is great (I took my normal J. Crew toothpick jean size) and they are really flattering.
    - Factory printed washed silk tee: I got the cerise/navy, which is the gondola stripe retail top from last year. I've been wearing it a lot: great fit, saturated colors, and the silk fabric feels wonderful. The only bummer is that it's dry clean of course.

    Non-J. Crew:
    - the Madewell long cardigan: the length and fit of this cardigan were what made it a winner for me. The pockets are cute too! I'm wearing the sweet coral, but the other colors just went on sale! I'm hoping to get the grey one...

  15. A review of an old item, but the collection cashmere plaited sweatshirt in stripe (item 37400) has long been on sale and is $130, down from $238. With the extra $30, it's a bit more than $90. If you can find in-store, it is marked down to $100 before the additional off, but colors and sizes have been very limited, at least in my B&Ms. Online is now fully stocked in all colors from XS - XL; navy had been out for a long while, so I ordered it today. I already have the rose and lemon, and I would have the orchid too but purple is just not my color. JC cashmere has been great for me this year; very little pilling, particular on the cashmere sweatshirt. It runs loose -- I always like to buy my sweaters in S but this one I can do in either XS or S.

The colorful striped featherweight cashmere in both colorways is also on sale, and is super cute IRL, but I have this from last year and with it being so thin, I snagged it on my first wear, so featherweight anything is not a good option for me. This one is definitely TTS, not big.

  16. Some new J. Crew purchases here and here and here and here. You can see I've been wearing the two fan fringe necklaces I picked up quite a bit. Today I'm going to copy this outfit from Respect The Shoes: here. I only wish I had the adorable Anthropologie belt to go with this.
I was at my BM on Saturday (Murray, UT), and they had a pretty full sale selection. Lots of Liberty jackets in small sizes.

  17. I just received the collection schoolboy blazer in tipped linen and I LOVE it. I was a bit worried because it was pre-order and sometimes those pre-order photos are incorrect. The linen is gorgeous deep navy blue and the tipped detailing is crisp and well done. The buttons are flat discs, which is a nice change, but I would not have minded the usual anchors or crests. I was also skeptical of the partial lining, but again, not an issue, and probably nice for wear in summer months. The fit is true to size, I got a size 2 which is my normal schoolboy and perfect shirt size. I don't normally order collection pieces (unless it is a cashmere sweater) because they don't fit my lifestyle or are too funky/hipster/outrageous, but this piece is really great, a real throwback to old school j.crew.

  19. Just received the Everly patent wedges and they are going back. Tomorrow. Why don't I ever learn?! These shoes are clearly not meant for me.
I've tried the Everly pumps in all its iterations and now the wedges. Why such a huge space between the my toes and the vamp of the shoe? Perhaps J.Crew knows that these shoes are severely lacking in the comfort department so they left ample space for the necessary gel inserts. So sweet of them. To be quite fair though, the wedges aren't nearly as uncomfortable as the pumps but it could be better. Loads better.
Back they go. I will not tolerate a shoe that makes my average feet look skeletal and sickly. Guess I'm sticking with the Valentina & Martina.

  21. Just posted a review and some outfits of the 3" Short in Scroll Print from a while ago. It's been sold out for a long time, but I found some listings of it on Ebay and posted links to those.
