JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Hi JCAs. Review of the Martina patent wedges in dark flannel. Online stock pic shows blue sea for dark flannel selection and is inaccurate.

    1. Thanks for that! I thought "dark flannel" was actually black! Funny name for it but stranger things have happened!

    2. Margaret - I know, you never know w/JC and their colors. Dark flannel could've actually been close to black in the Crewniverse. Too bad they've had the wrong stock pic up. Doesn't seem to have deterred orders, though. lol

  2. OT but I have not been able to add anything to my cart this morning (and if and when I can, it dumps it when I try to check out). Anyone else experiencing this?

    2. Apparently it was a Google Chrome and mobile issue; I chatted with CS and thy advised trying Internet Explorer which seemed to work. Of course by then the items I wanted had sold out...

  3. OT: anyone try the rash guard t-shirts? i'm interested in the Hibiscus floral short-sleeve rash guard item 01175 and wondering about fit. last years swimsuits i took an XS and normally in regular shirts i'm between XS and S.

    1. Miss JR, I just received my stripe rash guard and I love it. I ordered the frosted lilac, and I was concerned that a brightly colored bikini top might show through the white stripes, but I was happily surprised to see how thick the material is--even a bright blue color doesn't show through the white at all.

It definitely runs a bit small. I usually take an xx-small or x-small in J.Crew tops and x-small in swimwear, and I ordered the x-small rash guard. It's very fitted (they mean it when they say "second skin"), and I probably could have gone with the small just as easily, but I prefer a closer fit for something I'll be wearing in the water. It mostly comes down to preference and activity; if you're going to be swimming/kayaking/etc. I wouldn't recommend anything larger than the small, but if you're just wearing it to the beach or outside as a sun blocker, you might be more comfortable in the medium.

    2. If you end up getting the Hibiscus rash guard, I'd love to read what you think.

  4. What do your wear with the blue droplet necklace from last year? Haven't taken the tags off because it seems very big and very blue with everything I try.

    1. How about over a white shirt? Check my post from last year (scroll down). I think it's cute.

    2. Hi Newbie. I wear it mostly with button up shirts. I love it with bright pink, and green. I also wear it with t-shirts.

    3. Newbie - I mostly wear the blue droplet necklace with blue tops. I have a dark blue print top that I've worn it with, striped top. Try hanging it different lengths. Higher up or lower down can make a difference.

    1. I'm deciding if it's worth me driving 3 hours to the outlet mall. I guess it's not, but perhaps if I make a day of it...

BTW, I saw you tried on the pleated shift dress (the Allie dupe). Would you say it's pretty true to the dress measurements on the Factory website?

    2. Phoebe - 3 hours! That's a lot of gas. And time! Here are some measurements for the pleated shift dress:

      Size 4 - chest = 36", waist = 29"
      Size 6 - chest = 37", waist = 30"

      HTH :)

    3. Thanks! Those measurements are quite different from the ones the Factory size chart has. It says an 8 is a 29" waist!

In my car, a round trip is actually only 1 tank of gas, but, I obviously would go to other stores besides J.Crew factory, haha. It's a pretty nice outlet mall (Kate Spade and Barney's is there, I think). I guess I've driven 2+ hours to go to the next big city to shop before...

In any case, I think I'll probably sleep in and wait for the next discount to order online instead, haha.

    4. Phoebe, I also tried the pleated shift dress, and I thought it was true to size for a normal J.Crew dress. I could not have sized up or down from my normal dress size. It was adorable and well made, but too high waisted for me.

    5. Thanks, J.CrewJD! I am actually pretty high waisted, so that's good news for me.

  7. Has anyone seen the Cafe trouser in herringbone linen? Do they wrinkle easily?

  8. Good morning! I am thinking of buying some Madewell Keds. I saw a review by ShOperaRach, and she said they run large. Can anyone else give an opinion? I haven't worn keds since I was 10 yrs old, but I am itching to add the floral ones to my closet. I read the reviews on the website, but they mostly say they run true to size or slightly small.

Anna, I have a pair of Cafe Trousers in herringbone linen, and yes, they do wrinkle (it seems like mostly at the upper leg/crotch), though maybe not as badly as a linen shirt might, as the fabric has more substance.

  9. Just found the Keds feature/review on JCA from last year. I went with my regular shoe size. :)

  10. Hi! I recently bought the CafenCapri in gilded dot brocade. What do I wear with them? Help!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Sarah- I think a denim shirt or buttoned up jean jacket with a blingy necklace is good w the brocade pants for a fun look. Maybe a cashmere tee shirt or a linen tee shirt w a statement necklace. Or the gold cuff and no necklace
A tippi would look good too- the lilac color would look nice w the melon.
Also if you have any of the Serra tops or past season's equivalent silk top would look nice too. The mint green color may look good w the melon tone also. Just keep the colors in the same "tone", i.e. not too dark or lighter in depth. Good luck!

  12. Thank you so much for the ideas!
