Off on a Tangent: Lands End Catalog Covers

In my mailbox today was the most recent catalog from Lands' End. Unfortunately it is not up on the Lands' End website (click here), however it the same as the image above. It had a certain look to it that reminded me of "ye olde j crew of yore". It is just such a polished look with nothing more than a jacquard scarf and toggle coat. Even the hair is perfectly placed. Simple, but perfect.

Lands' End previous catalog cover also reminded of  "ye olde j crew of yore" (shown below). I feel like I have this exact top and pearls from J.Crew! Plus, the pink background reminded me of J.Crew's accessories collection devoted catalog from 2008.

Even though I am not a regular shopper of Lands' End (I know their quality is great, but the style/fit does not personally work for me and my body), I do enjoy flipping through their recent catalogs.

Did anyone else do a double take at Lands' End recent catalogs? Do you think they have a more J.Crew-vibe as of lately?

  1. I like their catalogs, for the most part. The items are reasonable quality, but generally quite boxy and seem somehow much dowdier in person than in the catalog... I use them for some basics, but not when I'm looking for a polished or tailored piece.

    1. Exactly! Looks lovely in the Lands End catalog, but boxier in person. Just doesn't work for my body. But the images are gorgeous!

  2. Check out their online issue of "Apostrophe" - very Crewish. That grey peacoat looks cute, and it's lined with navy and anchors.

    2. Lots of great outfit inspiration! Much more my style than the J. Crew October Style Guide.

  3. I have a monogrammed tote and a parka from Land's End and I just love both of them! You're right, the more recent catalogs definitely have a "back in the day" J Crew vibe. Unfortunately, the clothing just doesn't fit me right :( On a side note, does anyone know what happened to Land's End Canvas?

    1. Hi Natalie - there is so little info online about LEC, it's like it never existed! From what I understand, regular LE "absorbed" the Canvas line. You can still see a Canvas item here or there on the LE website but they haven't released anything new in well over a year, maybe two.

The demise of Canvas is really unfortunate - I thought they had a great thing going (while it lasted).

  4. Their online catalog and the "Apostrophe" online magazine are photographed in a way that makes me really want to try the clothing..and yes very "Old-school-Crewesque". However I did a bit more research--Sears has "Land's End" "stores" in many of their locations. The photographs from Sears make the clothes look far more matronly. Je vais passe!

  5. I buy and lot from Lands Ends and happy that they are finally rid of Sears.
They announced stellar Q2 earnings earlier this month, so the market is responding. Watch out Mickey D. they are stealing your playbook.
As for boxiness, I think they are doing better in describing the fit - but remember their target customer is older than JCrew's.
My take - they are becoming a refuge for the customers that no longer shop at Talbots/Chico's/Coldwater Creek.
I often pick up things in the boys' department for myself - chambray shirt, white pinpoint (which I had tailored to be more fitted, and since I purchased at a very, very reasonable price, it still was a good value).
My take on Canvas - it didn't generate enough sales and so they killed it.
Agree that tailored pieces is not their strong suit, but then that is not their customer.

  6. My husband and I both love Land's End and have been shopping with them for over 22 years. Their cotton sweaters are amazing and I tend to favor them over J.Crew's. My husband's work wardrobe is 90% LE. I also love their coats and I have a denim dress for the past two years from them that gets me compliments every time I wear it!

  7. I love the quality of Lands' End, not to mention the lifetime guarantee on all their products. The fit of the women's clothing isn't always good for me, but I often purchase the petite sizes if the length works, and this helps to get a better fit. The boys clothes really hold up well, and I purchase them quite a bit for all four of my boys, and sometimes for myself, too. I also blog quite frequently about Lands' End for anyone who might be interested. :)
