JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  2. Dear JCA's!
I live overseas and cannot get J.Crew catalog via mail. Now since the catalogs are no longer available online I can only rely on your kindness to scan one! I heard that November catalog is out, could someone please make it available for people like me? Thank you for your kindness! Christina

  3. It may sound simplistic, but I would love suggestions on what to wear through Fall/Winter with my denim pencil skirt--having a brain freeze on how to style it. Thanks a bunch!

  4. @wendy - maybe this is simplistic too, but maybe just tucking in a plaid button down would be cute -- kind of like this. As long as your pieces fit well, I think you would manage to look polished and chic instead of cowboy-esque. :) Hope that was somewhat helpful.

  5. Any ideas as to how to fall-ize the fleurette bustier dress? I have a party next weekend don't have any other cocktail attire to wear. And I love the dress, but I know it's quite summery!

  7. I'm on the hunt for the perfect white button-down. I usually take a medium/can wear anything from a 6 to a 10 in tops depending on the cut. Stretch tops tend to gape the most, and I love the fit of the silk stripe Boy Shirt. I wanted to order the Boy Shirt in Classic white, but it sold out online last night. Do any of you JCA's know if there are any white shirts in the men's section with a comparable fit?

  8. 78d50a16-45b0-11e0-a88f-000f20980440, I am thinking a black cropped cardi like the Jenna cardi or a cropped blazer would do the trick.

  9. Wendy, I often wear fitted popover sweaters and a belt over the sweater with my denim skirt.

  10. Still looking for styling advice on the Rafaella Dress. I want to be able to wear it casually. Here it is on the model. Anyone?

  11. This one goes out especially to NYC-area JCAs-- I'm heading into the city to see a matinee of the Book of Mormon (beyond psyched) on Sat, and I'm trying to strike that balance between looking polished and trying too hard. I just picked up the moonlighter dress on super-super sale (39.99 PLUS extra 30%- still plenty left in Philly), and was thinking of wearing that. Do you think it would come off as a little too "evening," or can anyone maybe think of a good way of dressing it down to an appropriate level? Or is everyone just wearing jeans to matinees these days? I haven't been to a show since I was a kid so I have no idea! Any thoughts would be appreciated- I've lived in major East Coat/European cities all my adult life, but NYC still makes me fee so "country!"

  12. Lizzy, though it makes me sad to say it, the matinee crowd is usually in casual attire. But that doesn't mean you can't dress up if you feel like it!

As a former NYC-er, I can tell you that the most important thing is that you wear something you're comfortable in and comfortable walking in.

That dress would be fab paired with boots and a cute midweight coat or jacket and a sassy scarf for a shot of color ... that is, if you have boots that would look right and that you can walk in ok.

I myself have no qualms about wearing sleeveless wool dresses in cold weather because I'm always hot. If you're someone who's always cold, maybe throw on a cardi over it?

  13. Thanks much, Elaine! I had heard that things had become more casual in recent yrs (or maybe my mom just overdressed me as a kid), but since getting dressed is pretty much my favorite/only hobby I wanted to wear something fun for the occasion. I tried some boots w/ the dress and I feel like it looks right.

Oh, and JCrewJD-- I've found that cowboy boots (if you have them) tend to make for a nice casual complement to anything velvet. That dress gorgeous!

  14. I just got the no 2 pencil skirt in vibrant flame (a bright red-orange) & I'm figuring out how to wear it. Today I combined it with a black silk shirt and black boots, but the contrast with either black or grey is pretty stark and it sends a very bold message. The color contrast with navy is less bold and I think it looks a bit smarter, but but I don't have winter clothes in navy. Any ideas?

  15. @JCrewJD,Wow, that is a gorgeous print! I often find that just a change of shoes can change the look of an outfit from dressy to casual. Have you tried flat riding boots with them? Either black or cognac boots, then throw a casual crewneck or V-neck pullover that picks up the yellow/gold tones, like the warm mustard Tippi and maybe even throw a hip-slung brownish belt to add shape. The idea is to cover up the dressier part on top and treat the bottom like a printed skirt.

  17. @woldy, check out the polyvores with this skirt; there's some great ideas including combinations with camel, fuschia & the ubiquitous black/white stripe. Link is:

I just bought this skirt myself and am looking forward to experimenting with it.

  18. Connor, THANK YOU! What a brilliant idea. I have a cashmere long sleeve tee in the warm mustard, will be trying that with it first thing!

P.S. Can I hire you to be my personal stylist? Hehe, just kidding...

  19. And thank you too Lizzy! I don't have cowboy boots :( but I can see how cute they'd look with a velvet dress!

  20. I have the paisley pencil skirt and the greenish silk blouse to wear with it. But what should I wear on my bare legs?! They often show the models without anything on their legs, and sorry, I live in a cold climate and must have something! But I feel like nude pantyhose are tacky, yet I certainly don't need anymore color in that outfit. I was thinking maybe Cuban seam pantyhose, but I will be going to church in this holiday get-up too. Is that too risque?
    Ideas? Suggestions? Thanks!

  21. Oh, also, with the paisley skirt and blouse, I'm thinking these darker nude Ann Taylor pumps I have. Of course, it would depend on what's on my legs, I guess.
    So, shoe suggestions too, please!!!

  22. JCrew associate at store told me opaque black tights and black shoes with possibly a black belt to tie it together. I think that may work!
