JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. THIS jacket!! Totally fell in love with it the first moment I saw it, and tried it on sooo many times before I finally decided to get it, while bearing the pain of saying goodbye with my benjamins. It's a shame to say that I've only wore it twice!!! Help please!!

  2. Um... The bootcut cords in the weathered rose color. How do I wear them without looking too young or too girly? I keep missing the mark. :(

  3. Now that the Patsy dress is marked down I am seriously considering it. It's purple silk jacquard... how could I resist? But how would you make it work for the office? I work in a casual environment but I dress up anyway on most days... but not sure how to make this dress work. They describe it as seasonless which I agree with... but for me that just makes it harder to pin down with accessories, etc!

  4. I'm thinking of purchasing the No. 2 skirt in blackwatch plaid. However, I'm worried about it looking too "Catholic school." Suggestions on how to wear it to work and avoid that pitfall?

  5. Miss JR: I would definitely avoid any top with lace/frills/ruffles to tone down the girly, and instead pair it with a classic blazer or a crewneck sweater in a dark neutral (black, grey, navy) to balance out the color of the cords.

J.CrewJD: For fall/winter at least, some nice simple black tights will pull it together for work, with a cardigan or blazer (depending on how dressed up you feel like being that day) in a medium neutral (grey, tan) to keep the focus on the purple!

That was fun! I hope it was at least a little helpful :)

  6. Hi folks,

I am seriously thinking of ordering the lady lace popover in champagne. A question - I am normally a 6/8 or S/Mon top - does this run baggy? I do NOT want it tight and was considering ordering a M...

  7. WMM, I'd go with the medium. I am usually a 6, S/M, and I ordered a small. It fits, and it isn't overly tight, but the underlayer in the front of the top has no give to it which makes it uncomfortable. I hate the way it rubs against my stomach and really think a medium would have been a better choice. Lately I've been venturing into size 8 territory which may be why the small isn't working that well for me but... I think this top looks better when it isn't tight. I hope that helps!

Rebekah, thanks for your advice! I have the gray with ivory piped lexington blazer and otherwise don't have any other medium neutral blazers... I wonder if that would work. Guess I will stick to cardigans at first. Thanks, I just ordered it after getting measurements from CS! For anyone wondering the size 4 has 36" bust and the 6 has 37" bust. The length in the 4 was 35 and some fraction of inches; the 6 was an inch longer. Still a little short for me but with tights I think can definitely make it work approp.

  8. tiny pea, that's a great looking jacket! The colour of the jacket is quite neutral, and almost any colour would go well with it. I can see myself wearing it with a pencil skirt and long boots.

WMM, the lady lace popover fits TTS and it's not baggy at all. Some tall gals have said the sweater is too short for them. I am 5'6" and didn't find it too short for me.

  9. I am at a loss for colors/styles to wear with the parsley color Minnies? Ideas??

  10. tiny pea, that IS an amazing jacket! i agree with Rose that you could pair it with a pencil skirt and boots of any height (shooties or tall boots).

I also think it would look great with a slim-leg, dressy trouser such as the Minnie or the Banana Republic Skinny Martin. Pair those pants and the jacket with a long, fitted tee; some layered gold necklaces; and a pair of pumps.

A final look would be to wear it with a long-sleeved, button-down shirt; a pair of classy, wide-leg trousers; and a menswear-inspired shoe such as a wedge oxford or a loafer.

  11. I recently got the Boy shirt in stripe crepe de chine, navy color, and I am having trouble putting more than one outfit together with it. I've only worn it tucked in to flare jeans, so far. And yes, that is sooo boring. Any ideas? I've tried to style it untucked, but it is long on me (I'm 5'2"!).

Also, can any of you JCA's help me on this issue? I returned an item using the prepaid return label. They received it last Sunday, but I've haven't received any type of email stating that they received/credited my account. Does it always take this long?

    Thanks in advance! =)

  12. Heather - usually they process right away, but if you contact them they may tell you to wait up to 2 weeks. I'd just email them your tracking number/proof of receipt and see what they say - they may just process it immediately after seeing that it's been received in their warehouse. Good luck!

  14. Heather, I love navy with other shades of blue, especially turquoise. Do you have the bright blue pencil double-serge pencil skirt from a few years back, or the new deep turquoise from this season? How about an orange skirt to pair with the blouse? Navy and gray always works but I prefer brighter colors since I treat navy as a neutral itself.

  15. I just bought some leather Ares sandals off eBay and was wondering if one could wear them with black or dark tights for fall... thoughts?

  16. XOXO: You know, I do have a Club Monaco pencil skirt in a light blue-ish turquoise color. I'll have to try it together. I have yet to approach the comfort zone in terms of pairing contrasting colors together. I always feel out of place...! But I will give this a try. Thanks!

  17. I am drawn to the yellow/white tipped Hacking Jacket in double serge wool.

This is a tough one, other than the obvious choice of wearing it with a white blouse and jeans, what else? I don't think it will go too well with a navy or black dress..too 80s real estate agent/power suited career woman..

  18. @ the shopaholic... what about mixing the jacket with some printed dresses since the color is so fun. i.e. anthro's Lepidoptera dress, Vintage Diana dress, Thunderous Skies dress. a nice vivid hued ruffley shirt would look awesome under that jacket too with a denim pencil skirt and vivid heels (thinking bright flame color).

  19. shopaholic... I used to have the ivory and yellow lexington and I ditched it because I could never figure out what to wear. Someone back then told me to wear gray, hot pink, or navy with it. So maybe you could try those colors! Oh, and with jeans... or minnies... I'd be afraid to wear with a pencil skirt but maybe a denim one would be cute.

  20. On Friday, I am attending a wedding of my husband's colleague. The venue is a restaurant and the dress code is full-length dresses for ladies and full suits for men. So I bought the Summerstock Maxi Dress in Dark Slate (dark grey) because (1) it was inexpensive and (2) it's the best-looking maxi dress I've found in my search so far. But it's not particularly wedding-ish.

See dress here in black: http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/dresses/long/PRDOVR~43211/43211.jsp

Any suggestions on how to style it up with a few accessories to make it more suitable to the occasion? All ideas appreciated!

  21. sportable, I think you can totally make it work!

Do you have an embellished belt? Like, embellished with crystals or anything? That could dress it up.

If not, I'd wear a statement necklace of some sort, hair up (if you have long hair!), or if you don't have a statement necklace, then go for some statement earrings. If you can pull off heels with the dress (I wouldn't be able to because I am tall), definitely do. Open toe or strappy sandals, metallic would be really pretty.

Otherwise, you could wear dressy open toed flats perhaps with embellishment. You could wear virtually any color! This dress is a canvas so you can really wear some "loud" accessories as my dad would say... I'd probably wear brightly colored shoes or metallic shoes and dangly earrings.

If you have a pashmina or other larger scarf type wrap, that will also dress up the dress used in place of say, a cardigan.
