JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Anybody attempting Project 333? Simplifying your wardrobe and creating 3 months worth of outfits from 33 items in your closet?

Great ideas in the Project 333Polyvore group, but anybody have good ideas on how you are styling last season's items? Seems like a timely thing since many are disappointed in the quality of current offerings and turning to beloved older items.

  2. I'd like some advice for what to pair with the Ink Dot pencil skirt. The dots are an inky blue color so I know navy would work, but that just seems too predictable. Any ideas/advice?

  3. AppGal: I have worn my ink dot pencil skirt a few times, took in on vacation in Maine - wore it with (probably) the other predictable colors..a zinnia orange cowl tank from Elie Tahari and the neon pinkish cashmere boyfriend tee.

  4. AppGal: I think an intense golden yellow or honey sweater would look gorgeous with that skirt. Or a very simply textured all white/cream ensemble to bring attention to the interesting dots :)

  5. Any suggestions on how to wear the NO. 2 Pencil Skirt in Jazzy Purple?
I have a GAP cardigan that's similar to JCs Warm Mustard that I think would be lovely with it. I could wear that with a pair of brown zebra flats or nude pumps, but I'm unsure what to wear under the cardi.
I also have a gray leopard cardi that I think would work well with black flats or pumps. But again, I'm unsure what to wear under the sweater.
    Any ideas? Thanks bunches!

Also, the skirt is just the tiniest bit too loose, any suggestion on tightening it up a bit? It's not really worth taking it to my tailor because it is wearable and looks nice, it's just a little looser than I want.

  6. Suzy and Rebekah: Thanks for the input! I guess any solid color would look fine with it. It's a pretty casual pencil skirt, compared to my other ones at least. I want to be able to dress it up at little better than the ways I've imagined wearing it in my head! Orange and gold would look really nice, and I have sweaters in both of those colors.

  7. jlcl119, if you can get away with just a simple alteration on the side seams not requiring any waistband adjustment, you might end up being happiest to have the alteration done. If just the side seams it should be a super quick alteration therefore inexpensive. If it's a very small amount the lining won't need to be touched. It's possible you could achieve a bit of shrinkage with a steam iron but it's unpredictable on a finished skirt.

  8. Ruffles,

I am interested in this 333 business. Do explain how I am supposed to coordinate 3 months worth of outfits. The organization this may bring to my to-full closets entices me!

    thanks!

  9. AppGal, that very green shirt you wore earlier this week, would also go nicely with it, I believe. I think almost any strong solid colour goes well with that skirt. I would keep pastels away from it. HTH

  10. Ruffles,

I also recently discovered Project333, I don't think I'm going to do it "officially" but I am inspired and have been carefully examining and pruning my wardrobe. I'm very happy with my wardrobe right now, which makes me happier than I want to admit in public. :) I still lust after some items but have no urgency in acquiring them because I know I don't need them and since they are few I know I can/will afford them.

  11. Does anyone know anything about the Daylong v-neck shirt #48463? I want to try one and was hoping someone could help with sizing etc. Thanks.

  12. Victoria - I'm not doing Project 333 "officially" either, but I do like the inspiration to be creative with my current wardrobe.

I'm finding I can do many Fall trends like Leopard, Bright Bottoms, Longer Skirts, Red, Mixing Brights, etc. without buying alot of new items. I've been VERY selective this season because of quality disappointments.

Quality in Classics - I'm not the authority by any means, but there are some tips and articles on the website:

  13. jlc119, try wearing the jazzy purple with red. It's actually the same color as the plum orchard shorts from summer, take a look at Egyptomaniac's post with the same color shorts and a red top. I love this color combo and can't wait to try it myself with the skirt and a bright red wool jacket.

  14. jlc119, you could also add a belt such as the animal-print that Egyptomaniac wore in the same post. It would snug up the skirt a bit for you.

  15. tamara: You're probably right, I'll end up getting it altered anyway and until it fits the way I want I'll keep putting it on and taking it off.

xoxo: Great idea! I love her blog and I actually forgot about that outfit. It's a good combination and I never would have put it together myself.
I have that same sweater too, it'll be a good way to dress down the skirt.

    Thanks ladies!

  16. I was just curious, does anyone know if the 2011 No. 2 pencil skirt in the new peacock blue color is the same as last year's nightfall blue? I'm wondering how much they differ, and if it's worth having both. Thanks!
