"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. I am sick and tired of buying j crew t-shirts that fall apart in two to three washes. tiny holes in T's and cardigans that fall apart at the seams? Anyone else have this problem?

  2. I have had tiny holes appear in my cotton cardigans. So annoying I have sworn off J. Crew sweaters.
Does anyone know what happened to the Greta Canvas wedges? They just came out in beige and orange and I cannot find them anywhere.

    1. Same problem with JCrew & Madewell t-shirts - so frustrating to see those tiny little holes after 2 months of wearing. I think it is because the fabric is so thin & it rubs on your pants or belt in that area. so cheap!

  3. Is it true that coupons you receive in the catalog can't be used in-store on off brands, such as Saint James?

I wanted to use my student discount on a Saint James shirt, but I was denied since they said it could only be used on JCrew items. I could understand this, but is it true that the coupons can't be used on it either? I was denied from using my coupon as well.

It just seems strange to me because the coupons I've used in the past have worked online, such as my Fjällräven Kanken backpack purchase.

I was pretty confused when I was denied with this in-store.

  4. paperwhales, I haven't received one of those in a while but normally if there are exclutions it should be marked on the card. It is often the case with coupons.

My vent now ;-). I bought the cashmere keyhole sweater during the last 30% off promo. My order was cancelled by the CS while we were chatting on the phone. She apologized and offered to find one in store for the same price and ship it for free. I was mad but what can I do? So the day after I receive an email from the WWFFY team that they found the sweater and it's being shipped to me. First of all, there was no way for me to verify the price that I was charged until I actually received the sweater. Is this normal when you do a WWFIFY? Second, I was charged the online price less 20%. I was puzzled because the 30% off was in store too (it came from the store in Lynchburg). I know that it's only 10% (although it's $12 on a $120 sweater) but it's the principle. If I didn't like the sweater so much I would return it.

  5. I recently ordered a bikini in what I thought was my size. Since they "updated" their swimsuit sizing, and they had my bra size next to the size I ordered, it should have fit. Now I know to NEVER order a bikini top from J. Crew unless it's a true d-cup special size. Unfortunately they are now changing how they do d-cup sizing. Before they used to do actual bra sizes. Now they're just doing m, l, xl d-cups. What the hell is an xl d-cup?! I found one of the few actual bra sized bikini tops left and ordered it. It comes today, and I'm going to blow a gasket if it doesn't fit.

  6. Ema, on the WWFIFY searches that I have done they always tell me the price I will be charged. It is usually the store price unless my PS or CS has agree to sell it to me for a different price due to discrepancy between retail & online or they are making amends for some other issue.

  7. Catherine, I was so disappointed that they changed their swimsuit sizing because I used to be able to order the same sizes and they always fit perfectly. Last winter the jersey lomellina bikini bottoms in my usual size were a little bit big but I was going on vacation right away so I kept them. This spring I ordered the Casbah bikini and the bottoms in my usual size were huge and I have not lost weight. I was perplexed on what top size to order since they were now bra sizes so I ordered my usual bra size and the top was way too small, I could hardly do up the back closure. I used to love J.Crew suits and I will still try to find my size but no way will I buy on final sale. Good luck with yours, hope it fits.

  8. I'll chime in with a complaint about J. Crew swim suits. I used to love them, but haven't found a winner the last couple of years.

Maybe it's just me -- I have a pretty small chest -- but I need some sort light padding to make the top look good. Why not include removable pads in all suits?

And, I used to love the swim skirts -- without the attached bikinis. I am in reasonably good shape, but I like having the coverage of the skirt while I walk along the beach and pool with my kids. But, I liked having the flexibility to take off the skirt if I wanted to avoid a mid-thigh tan line, or wanted to swim.

The skirt with the attached bikini gets heavy when it gets wet, and I feel like it's going to fall down as I come out of the surf.

I used to wear the skirts with both one pieces, and over bikinis.

Give me a bigger selection of suits with light padding on top, and swim skirts, and you'll have me back as a swimsuit buyer!

  9. Please JCrew update your inventory computer system. You cannot search items to see if another store might have your size. This is especially a problem when an item goes on sale and is out of stock in your size online....what can one do? I called stores across the country for an hour yesterday looking for my size, and then gave up, and it was pitiable that the SA could not offer a customer any help in finding it! Anthro is so much easier to shop at.

  10. Anyone having issues with shipping this week?

    ReplyDelete
  11. chrissy,
No, but I did the week of the 23rd. Really strange. Package sat for over a week. Finally called and CS could not understand why package had not shipped as everything was in stock. She said she would get it shipped ASAP which she did. Weird.

  12. The Sticky-Bee, I had the same problems with their T-s. Couple washes, either they fade in color or have holes. At first, I thought I was the only one having these problems...

  13. I just received the Factory two-pocket chambray shirt - it was inside out and folded in a weird way. This isn't may complain though. It was stinky! It smelled like wet laundry that you folded and stored. Nothing that a good wash can't fix I'm sure - but still. What a turn off.

I'm also not happy with the quality of their statement necklaces. They described the Mulberry Leaf Pearl Mix as incredible luxe but it's really not. IRL here.

  14. I've always wanted women's clothing manufacturers to make cute little board short-type swimsuit bottoms to go with the regular bikini tops. Some women (me) don't like to wear tiny bikini bottoms, and because of their water activities some can't.

  15. I called CS to exchange the factory bermuda short for another color. The CS rep told me that only the color I ordered was on sale and that the other colors offered were at a higher price. I was bummed so decided to just return the shorts. 2 minutes later I go onto the factory website and see the bermuda shorts available in multiple colors ALL on sale!

  16. Well, I have finished packing up my latest box of returns and although there aren't that many items it rings in at almost $700 including duty/taxes. Most of the returns are due to fit or quality issues. Nice ideas, but terrible execution.

  17. I like their swimwear, however, I definitely agree that having some paddings would make the top look/fit so much better. Ignoring the look for a moment, the top is actually too thin... I have to find a way to sew another layer inside.

  18. tamara: Have you looked at Athleta's swimsuit offerings? They have really cute styles that have the board short-like bottoms you mentioned. I haven't bought from them but they seem to be a good company.

  19. Tamara- Lands' End Canvas has some great little board shorts on sale for $13! http://canvas.landsend.com/pp/ShackSupplexHipsterBoardShorts~207119_-1.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::HRD&CM_MERCH=IDX_Women-_-Swim&origin=index

I just love them, and have them in 3 colors. Very well made, and just the right ammount of coverage. I took my regular J Crew sz.2 in them. HTH!

  20. Title Nine Sports is also a great place to look for swim suits (or other outdoor oriented clothing for women only). They have both online and B&M stores.

  21. Not really a vent, per se, but a bizarre nitpick, or headscratch. I got the Elsa jacket in the mail today. It was on a hanger that had this piece of cardboard taped over it. I pulled off the cardboard, and it's an Ann Taylor hanger? Wth? How weird is that?

  22. Catherine, your comment, "What the hell is an xl d-cup?!" cracked me up. As an A cup that sounds pretty redundant to me! I agree that their swimsuits need some light padding at the chest. I used to have an older J. Crew one-piece that was such high quality. I would gladly pay more for the quality they used to have.

  23. All of my t-shirts from JCrew get holes near the bottom in the exact place. Honestly, I'd rather pay a 1/4 of the price t-shirts from H&M and not worry when I have to throw them out. Also, their sizes drive me crazy. Vanity sizing is annoying.

  24. Wow, I can't believe other people are getting holes in their Tees. I actually first Googled "How do I know if I have moths?" but then checked out this blog. I don't get holes in my Banana Republic tees - problem is - I like the J Crew Tees more. But I will no longer buy them. They're too expensive to end up looking like a homeless person after three washes.

  26. I love j.crew but will no longer be shopping there. Atleast, not for winter clothes. Every sweater and dress I bought has holes in it. I take such good care of my clothes yet they all have holes. They were nice to enough to credit for one sweater but the rest of clothes form past 2 years are thrown away after being worn once or twice. What a waste of money!

  27. glad I found this thread. 90% of my T-shirst have holes in them! usually near the seams. sometimes holes appear after 3-5 washes! doesn't happen with men t-shirts, though, my husband had 3-4 year old Ts and they are still fine and I wash them the same. And literally I have 10 year old banana republic or GAP T-shirts that never ever had this issue. I contacted JCrew and here is what I got as an answer:

"Glad to assist. I’ll need the receipt with your shirts on it. When you find the receipt, you can return them at one of our J.Crew Canadian stores (not Factory store). I can also try to pull your store receipts. I’ll need the following information:

    Date of Purchase.
    Item number.
Last four digits of the card you used.
Store number (the store name you visited).
I can also try to pull your online purchase with the item number. This would be located on the tag inside of the shirt. Did you use email address (@gmail.com) when the order was placed?"

Are they serious???? Date of purchase? and they think most people have only 1 cc to keep track? stores I bought them in? why does it require so much trouble to shop at their stores and why they dont stand behind the quality of their prducts?
