J.Crew describes this {fabulous} Crewcut top as the following:
This über-cozy cotton cardigan has the versatility of her favorite sweatshirt, with chic, sweetly feminine styling and details. Gathered silk ruffles peek out from the two front pockets and bottom trim, and the shawl collar is covered in silk. Sure to be a staple for everything from school days to playdates.
When I was looking through the Crewcuts section of J.Crew's website, I ran across this amazing little shawl cardigan. At first I thought, "why-oh-why is this Crewcuts-only!" Then it dawned on me... "yes, I will raid the kids closet today!" And so with the offer of free shipping on any Crewcuts item (& 15% off with my educator discount), I took the plunge and purchased it.

Let me start off by saying... I love it!!! For the price, it is a well-crafted piece. It looks absolutely amazing with its silk shawl collar and subtle ruffles around the pockets & hem. The fabric and shade of the Marled Grey is perfect for the breezy days of Spring.

I normally take a size xs (or a size 0, sometimes a size 2) in the adult sizes. Since there is no conversion from Women to Crewcuts, I took a chance and went with a size 12 in this top. (Incidentally, Crewcuts Girls goes all the way up to size 14.) The size 12 worked out great! It fits me perfectly.

Since I am 5'8, the full-length sleeves are not exactly full-length. Instead, they are bracelet sleeves on me... and it works! I am also surprised that the length of the cardigan works very well on me too! The cardigan is quite long and hits at my hip (not quite low-hip, but not high-hip either, just somewhere in between).

So ladies, I would highly recommend getting this cardigan! I know it's on back-order until 8/09/2010, which is a bummer. However, it was back-ordered (to that date too) when I purchased it and somehow I got it shipped to me one-week later. (Go figure?!)

What are your thoughts on the Girls' Heathered Shawl-Collar Cardigan? Have you seen or own this top? If so, what is your review of the cardigan? Have you tried on or own other Crewcuts items (for yourself)? If so, please share your review too! :)

  1. That cardi is sick cute!!! Congrats on the good score, and that they shipped ahead of time. I LOVE the girls' CC, and check their sale ahead of women's lately. (DD is becoming more of a fashion plate than I am, that's for sure.) I would totally get CC stuff if it would fit, and I pine for certain things, like the Lodge sweater from last winter.

  2. August 9th? Wow. Very cute sweater. I have the Crewcuts crazy bead necklace. I can't find her pic, but Jemma Ruby has it as well.

  3. Too cute! I'm always tempted to give Crewcuts a try, but as a 34D and a S or a 6 in their adult tops, I think it would be pushing it to try to squeeze myself into a 14! :(

  4. Thanks for the review. I ordered a couple of the crazy bead necklaces several months ago but returned them...just not my style. I also tried one of the jackets and while it fit, it wasn't the color I was looking for, so it went back, too. I definitely think CC has a lot of potential for *grown up* girls too though. :)

  5. I regularly buy items in Crewcuts, even dresses. The tees are so adorable this year I bought several. I'm a 0 as well. I don't even buy the highest CC size. Prices are great.

  6. I had the same reaction to the cardi and bought it too (in size 14). I am normally a J Crew size Medium and the 14 fits quite well. I LOVE it and have already worn it 3 times since I recieved it.

  7. Cute sweater.

I bought several of the Crewcuts crazy bead necklaces for my daughter and me when they were on sale this fall/winter. I LOVE them. So pretty and cute and lightweight esp. the purple ones we bought:)

Also, bought several of the Crewcuts 3 row bracelets to match. We have kept some for ourselves to wear as sets to to the necklaces above and have given several as gifts. I have a small wrist and while I would not not buy any Crewcuts clothing (as my daughter wears it not me) I will wear the bracelets with my tiny wrist:)

  8. I've seen some really cute sweaters and thought they should have been made for women's style.
I have a CC pearl necklace that looks like a toned down version of the Hammock necklace I wear occasionally.

  10. Slightly off topic, but it came up in the post. Can anybody let me know how I can use my educator discount for online orders? I've not found any way to do this (I'd have thought my .edu email address may have done the work automatically, but no).

    Thanks so much!

  11. I have bought a few Crewcuts items... this cardigan is one of them! I like to wear it with leggings so I bought it a bit bigger (size 14) than what I could have gone with. I didn't want to sacrifice for the length. I usually wear size XS & P0. I buy size 14 mostly because I don't like them to be short on me since I have a longer torso (even though I'm only 5'3). I have some Crewcut dresses and they're ADORABLE! I'd also recommend the girls heirloom rose cardigan (item 24143) which is gorgeous! It's quite expensive but it's definitely one of a kind! It runs a little big though. I tried on the size 14 and it's like an adult size S or M so I went with size 12 which fits perfectly! Hope this helps for those who would like to try on the Crewcuts!

  12. Hi Moya, you can place the order online then send an email to the customer service asking them for price adjustment with your educator discount. There's no coupon code for this discount. The CS might ask you to send the email from your educator email address for verification. Also, you can bring your receipt to the store asking the SA to make the price adjustment for you by showing your teacher ID. I have done that in store with my student ID and there's no problem! Hope this helps!

  13. Would the boy's chambray shirt work for me if I am normally an xs or 2 in women's tops?

  14. Any chance you could post pictures of what the heathered shawl-collar cardigan looks like on?

  15. I love cardigans and the crewcuts cardigan is super cute.

I have only been brave enough to buy one crewcut's item-- I purchased the schoolboy blazer last year. I am actually wearing it today! Pictures are on my style blog, Little Tin Soldier.

I am usually a size 2 or XS/S in regular J. Crew tops. I am tall so sizing down to children's sizes doesn't always work. But last year I was looking for a cropped blazer to wear with my sundresses. I ended up buying the boys' blazer in a size 12. The sleeves are short on me (but I always wear 3/4 sleeves) so I don't mind. It fits perfectly in the shoulders and has a boxy, stolen-from-a-younger-sibling feel.

I have yet to try any girls' items but I'm happy to see that some JCAs have made them work.

  18. Thanks so much Jean. I'm going to try taking my purchase in on Tuesday to see if I can get the adjustment--if so, I get the 8.75% tax returned as well.
