In addition to showcasing several J.Crew pieces, the article shares the following:
We love her style: Jenna LyonsDo you like Jenna Lyons style? Do you agree with her tips/ quotes? What are your thoughts on the items featured? Have you tried on or purchase any of the items listed here? If so, please share! :)
It's safe to say that the level of obsession with the J.Crew creative director's knockabout glamour has reached fever pitch. Here, some tips from the master.
"I'd describe my look as a little tomboy, a little disheveled, and a little granny. It's about pairing opposites: the sweet eyelet piece with the military jacket; the classic striped tee and the chunky, chunky jewelry."
"I'm in heels 90 percent of the time- I wear them with sweatpants. Being tall is fun, and there's something nice about not only being tall but then making yourself appear even taller."
"I like exaggerated pants: super-skinny, super-wide, super-high, or really slouchy. But I don't do well with a basic trouser. What interests me is going with something that's a bit more dramatic."
I like Jenna's style a lot. She is in a creative field and can get away with anything. I am also tall and wear heels all tSome of that I would wear to work and the guys would think I lost my mind. I also wear heel all the time- with my heels I am probably 6'0-6'1 or so. You definely feel like you can do anything with a good pair of heels! Good on her for being proud of her height!
ReplyDeleteI'm with Jenna and Jemma - being tall rocks! At 5'9", I'm not the least bit bashful about wearing heels.
ReplyDeleteLooks like there are some new arrivals on the site.
ReplyDeleteI liked seeing Jenna mix her own stuff with JC pieces.
That's priceless--Jenna wears her own high-waisted pants, but they won't make any to sell on J Crew!
ReplyDeleteMy biggest complaint about J Crew for years has been that except for one or two dull exceptions, they offer only low-rise and hip-slung pants. I hate low-rise pants!
I wish J Crew would make and sell some natural and high-waisted pants like Jenna is wearing.
The FIRST thing that drew me to JCrew was the fact that they made low waist, hip slung, favorite fit pants. I was in heaven. I do not ever plan to wear high waisted pants ever again. Just not comfortable for me. I have so many pairs of JCrew pants from 2001-7 when they were all super low. I hope they never go away but I have so many pairs I could probably make it through the rest of my life:)
ReplyDeleteI saw this article several days ago. It was a fun read:)
that romper worn with high waisted pants must create some serious VPL.
ReplyDeleteOkay Tastymoog, help me out here, what does "VPL" stand for? :P
ReplyDeleteI'm not loving any of the pants in Jenna's pic's so for now I'd say I'm not really swayed by Jenna's look. I don't really look at her clothing and think "wow, I gotta have that".
I passed over the Lieutenant jacket for Gap's belted khaki utility jacket. The collar has a button tab and looks 'cool' w/the collar up and cinched at the waist. Why won't JC add belts to their jackets...it's just another scrap of material.
Alexis, did you mean to say the May 2010 issue of Lucky Magazine?
ReplyDeleteirl,
ReplyDeletevisible panty line.
Lyssa: I am not sure, so I just changed it to the "latest". Thanks for the heads up on it. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat is interesting is many of the items that are in Jenna's 'personal collection' of clothes have been JCrew-ized: the Submission skinny jeans, the Sonia Rykiel belt, the cropped Mui Miu pants are all in the spring 10 or Fall 09 collections.
ReplyDeleteI like Jenna's style, but my figure does not lend itself to much layering. I do love the heels & at a bit under 5'9", I love the 4+" skyscrapers!
How many times can this woman give the same interview?
ReplyDeleteYou posted my thoughts almost verbatim Meredith. I immediately enlarged the picture so I could find out where to get those slacks lol. None of the trousers she's wearing are J. Crew. Very interesting.
ReplyDeleteToo funny and so true about the vpl tastymoog. :) I do, however, love that outfit and would absolutely wear it (with another cami and not that romper, of course).
ReplyDeleteQuestion for everyone-
ReplyDeleteI'm graduating from college in May (hooray!) and need an appropriate, spring-y, cute dress for the commencement ceremony (to wear under robes, of course). I look better in cool colors and shorter cuts (I'm short legged and fairly busty, and usually wear around a 4 in J. Crew dresses and I like the Bridget dress in watercolor lilac, but want some idea of what it's like on. Anyone try this one on and have some tips or description of how it feels, how long it really is, fit, etc.?
When I saw this in Lucky last week I actually figured, she works for J.Crew, she probably cut the romper to wear it as a top....just my theory :) I also think she looks more elegant in the 3rd outfit (romper one) than the other two although I hate the pigeon toe so that may be influencing me... but I do think the first and second looks are so predictable even if there are some nice pieces, (and if that is her taste then she's allowed)...Oh but I do want her Miu Miu shoes :)
ReplyDeleteHi Kelly Anne,
ReplyDeleteI made some comments on the fit of the Bridget in an earlier post (search for my name). It was really cute on the hanger, NOT cute on- really bunchy. You are smaller than me (and my friend who also tried it on) so perhaps it would hang better? It is certainly worth an order to see how it fits you!
It's bad enough when a young model stands pigeon-toed, but to see Jenna doing it at 40-something is ridiculous! But I like her anyway.
ReplyDeleteLyssa, you are right, this is from the May issue. Sorry Alexis, I think I had April on the brain when I sent the scan!
ReplyDeleteI like Jenna's style, and I think Jemma Ruby is right - she can dress in ways that I can't because she's in a creative field. This article does underscore my belief that she designs for herself.
I guess I just have a bad attitude. First of all, as I've said before, I think Jenna is being overexposed and the reason is, I think, that we are not the only ones who've noticed the superfluidity of sequins, ruffles, $$$ costume jewelry, over the top layering, etc. The powers that be at JCrew are trying to flush out new buyers in as many markets as they can, since their once loyal following isn't as quick to swallow the bait these days. They even had an article about her a few months back in Traditional Home for crying out loud(and I love my TH mag), quite a shock to see JL featured there. This last mini-roll out is absolutely nothing new. I am finding LLB Signature, LE Canvas and Talbots much more to my liking these days, which is too bad, because up until last fall, I was a very loyal JC customer. They have completely lost me with escalating prices, increasing quality issues and ridiculous styling. I don't want to look like a pseudo-celebrity styled college sophomore, I'd much rather look my age, but absolutely fabulous in some knockout, classic pieces- yes, like Lauren Hutton.
ReplyDeleteDesert Flower and David, ITA with your comments, in particular that JL designs for herself. From the cut of the suiting dresses (hello, V-necks sliced to the navel and drape-y cowls that shift to reveal an entire boob!) it seems clear to me that JC is losing touch with professionals who have to work in a traditional office environment.
ReplyDeleteHexicon, I do agree about the low-cut dresses but I love scarves and find a multitude of ways to wear them that cover the plunging neckline. They liven up the otherwise solid colors of the dresses too. I would definitely prefer less revealing designs but I love scarves so not hard to put these two together and make it work appropriate.
ReplyDeletei just wore heels for the first time in many months last week partly because JL was talking about it in Lucky! I'm 6' even and end up taller than my husband in 3" heels. They were fun to wear, slid all over the place & hurt by the end... i think i need some pointers.
ReplyDeleteI have to say Jenna is inspiring. Partly because I too am tall and love fashion, but because she carries it so well - speaks so confidently, yet humbly at the same time. I love her idea of opposites, pairing a little bit of tomboy with your outfit. The granny comment I love. Thanks for this post.
