J.Crew Email: A dress refresh

"Thanks!" to many of you who shared the following email from J.Crew this morning.

The email features the Poplin Bridget Dress (Item 22975; Regular: $138.00, now $128.00) of which the email shares the following fashion advice:
The bold shoulder. Repurpose cocktails-only attire for day by pairing our one-shoulder Bridget dress with a skinny belt and flat sandals.
I just had to include the item description:
Our favorite silhouette of the season (and a design darling), it's a fresh new take on the traditional strapless dress. With carefully placed darts on the shoulder and slight shirring at the waist, it's incredibly flattering and unfailingly feminine—we're completely obsessed. Perfect with a cardigan at the office or around town or worn with a pile of jewels and sky-high heels for special occasions.
Okay, J.Crew I loves ya but no more of the following phrases: "our favorite ... of the season" and "we're completely obsessed". If I were a drinker, I would totally make a drinking game out of this. ;)

What are your thoughts on the dress? Do you agree on how to repurpose a cocktail dress? ;)

  1. Add to the drinking game: "we're wearing ours with..." and ...sky-high heels."

    I think I will pass on the ankle fishnets styling advice. :)

  2. I tried this on in-store in size 0 (my usual size). The neckline puckered and looked too billowy. I really wanted to love it, but had to pass.

    Go for a shift embossed dress instead.

  3. I am also tired of their phrases. They really need a new writer.

    I like this dress by itself (although it's not for me) much better than how they styled it over the ruffled tank online. :)

  4. I have this in the lilac, which is less cocktail-y, I think. It is loose on top, 'll need to have it taken in a bit. I do like it, and will wear it for work with a cardigan.

  5. The dress is on sale in my B&M for only $69.99. I tried on the lilac (which is a pretty shade of light purple) but the dress didn't fit right up top, it was too loose on the side without the sleeve. Maybe with 30% off it would be worth having it altered because otherwise I liked the material (quite soft) and the length. Not sure how the one-shoulder look will hold up next year.

  6. Lol at the drinking game, Alexis!

    This is not the first time they've featured things that are still FP online but have been marked down in the stores. I don't get it, especially given Mickey's repeated statements about wanting to move merch at full price.

  7. I like the idea of this dress, and it sounds like it may be going on super-sale with the fit problems and all.

    ITA that you are hilarious Alexis: drinking game! hehe!

  8. Yeah... they seem to think everything should be worn with sky high heels. I really can't believe they are using the same tired phrases they've been using for the last couple years.

    I also hate one shoulder dresses, and poplin. Too bad.

  9. My friend and I both tried this dress on in black a couple of weeks ago. It fit HORRIBLY. Bunchy, cheap-looking fabric. We have different body types (me: busty but otherwise pretty normally shaped, her: absolutely dead-on measurements for a size 8) and it didn't work for either of us.
    And "obsessed" - please! From Princeton wordweb:
    # obsession - compulsion: an irrational motive for performing trivial or repetitive actions, even against your will; "her compulsion to wash her hands repeatedly"
    # obsession - an unhealthy and compulsive preoccupation with something or someone

    They are compelled to use the word "obsessed", apparently

  10. ITA about being sick of their tired blather about their obsessions.

    And I see where this could work at the office with a carefully selected cardigan or jacket (something that wouldn't gape to reveal a lot of skin), but IMO this is just another example of JC's deluded ideas about what is office-appropriate. (In the same mode as the suiting dresses that are cut down to the navel.).

  11. I can't pull off the one shoulder look and I find this style to be a little trendy for J. Crew. I have to agree, I'm a little tired of their obsessions, favorites, and jenna's picks!

  12. I have a different game to suggest instead of a drinking one; it's called "Look Up Items by Description", for example:
    "of the season" - 154 items;
    "obsessed" - 17 items (5 must have sold since yesterday, because there were 22!)
    "we're completely obsessed" - Uh, down to 3!!
    "sky-high" - 20 (omg) results!!!
    Try it, you'll have a good laugh.

    "Distressed" = 43
    "Frayed" = 22
    "High-low" = 3
    "Jenna" = 10
    "Must-have" = 16
    "Raw" (as in raw-edged) = 50

  14. Rebecca, I agree completely. Cheap-looking fabric, terrible fit. Basically I've given up on any item with a side zip: they are uniformly awful.

    Agreed on the phrasing - how many "It" pants/dresses/shoes/overpriced necklaces can they have in a given season?
