Hen Sweater Keeps Company {spotted: hen scarf!}

We have discussed the French Hen Sweater (Item 14492; $95.00) quite a bit. (It definitely is a conversation starter!)

Well J.Crew has decided to add another French Hen design item to the mix: the wool scarf! I briefly stopped into a J.Crew store today and imagine my surprise to see a wool scarf in navy adorned with tiny-hens-wearing-berets print.

I actually thought the design was quite brilliant. From a far, it looks like a great scarf that works with most outfits. Up close, there is a whimsical tiny print. Well played J.Crew!

A big "thanks!" to Audball (in this post) who shared images of the scarf with us (to view all the photos, check them out here). She also shared with us the price ($65), item number (24441), and material (100% wool).

There's more! "Thanks!" to wellfedfred (in this post) who shared: "My September catalog finally arrived, and on page 18: "The French hen is our mascot for fall (you'll find it scattered throughout the collection)." Didn't find it anywhere else in the catalog, but was wondering when it would start turning up..."

This news is confirmed by fellow JCAs... "Thanks!" to JSR & Cate (in this post), as well as Carmen, who spotted this print on additional items (like trouser socks and an iPhone case).

Have you seen the French Hen print items (like the Scarf) at your local J.Crew store? If so, please share!

  1. I must see this! The hen sweater was a no-go from the beginning but I love a good scarf.

  2. If there is a scarf, I would return my unworn sweater about which I am so ambivalent!

  3. More animals...make it stop. Please.

  4. I'm thinking it probably is way more versatile as a scarf than a sweater. Interested to see it!

  5. Yes! Agree that I would get far more wear out of a scarf than a sweater.

  6. I saw that scarf today, too! Navy with little off-white hens, in thin wool. Would be even cuter if the hens were just a shade bigger (more obviously hens). I was very tempted, but I haven't bought anything FP at J.Crew in ages...accessories promo, please?

  7. Also, this is OT, but one of the SAs told me that red phone ordering is going be discontinued in about a week. Anyone else hear something similar?

    1. Someone commented about an ipad-like device to be used instead, I think it was called blue martini. Sorry but that's all I recall.

    2. jaza88 - I heard it was coming, but didn't know they were discontinuing the red phone so soon. My vps is not vfast w/the online computer when ordering for me. We did it once and I stuck to the red phone after that. I hope she takes to the iPad device much better. Good memory xoxo. Blue Martini is the software provider.

Thought bubble: Umm...Blue Martini started supplying to retailers almost a decade ago. See this article about Nordstrom's use of it. Blue Martini is the software. Red Prairie sells & supports (Wiki)

    3. The Red Phone was discontinued in Miami about 6 months ago. Blue Martini is convoluted and difficult for the associate. Forget about it if there a long line at the cash register, a scowling manager or if you are after a verboten sale item. However my sales associate persevered for one hour to get the Blue Martini system to accept a sale order and discount at the prevailing store rate and accommodated my request for free shipping. This resulted in a very complimentary email from me to customer service which most likely resulted in her swift termination. LOL.

  8. Now, I could get on board with a hen scarf. Cute, kitschy prints are much more doable on accessories!

  9. My September catalog finally arrived, and on page 18: "The French hen is our mascot for fall (you'll find it scattered throughout the collection)." Didn't find it anywhere else in the catalog, but was wondering when it would start turning up. Are the scarf hens wearing the pink berets?

  10. From time to time I check people's Instagram picture with the #jcrew hash tag, just to see how people are wearing J.Crew. Seems like the Hen is all over their merchandise. A young sales girl who I assume works for a B&M snapped a photo of not only the Hen sweater but also it came in socks and iPhone cover. Overkill? I still think the Hen belongs in Madewell not JCrew, IMO.

  12. I'm going to Macy's for the 25% off sale and I just might have to cross the street to crewse for a gander of it. (squawk!)

  13. I think I might go for the scarf! I've asked around about the sweater, and a lot of people think that it's a little silly/young-looking for anyone over 21.

  14. Isn't this akin to flogging a dead hen? Enough already.

  15. Don't forget to check out Macy's Shop for a Cause sale today. A $5.00 donation gets you 10-25% off everything (except cosmetics/perfume) in the store. I already presaled it and will go today to pick up my goodies and maybe find more! It's a good time to buy expensive things for back to school or Xmas. And it's a good cause.

  19. I saw hen socks today! Can't remember if it was wearing a beret, though.

  20. By the way, I recently wrote a post on my style blog about the hen sweater, asking people whether they thought it was silly or not - the responses I got on Facebook was that it just wasn't age appropriate for someone in her 30s. The scarf isn't online yet. Hopefully soon??!!

    1. I wore it last week and I'm 32, and I received compliments all day long. It's all relative to the individual and how you choose to style it in my opinion.

  21. Hi, I sent the codes to the first four ladies. All gone now sorry. Thanks for responding. Enjoy!

  22. My sweet DH went out to check out some bike gear, but came home with the hen scarf! :) I don't have a blog, but I tried posting photos on a photobucket album:

    http://s105.photobucket.com/albums/m201/audball67/

My initial thoughts: It's big! More like a wrap than a scarf; I would say similar in size to the cashmere/silk wraps. Online, it will be $65, but they are doing a $10 off full-price scarves in-store promo now, so it was $55 (which my DH balked at but since he knew I was "chicken-weak", he succumbed). It's all wool, which concerns me a bit, as a I have a Madewell all-wool scarf that sometimes leave me with a rash if I wear it for too long. Since I had planned on purchasing the polka-dot scarf in navy anyway, exchanging white dots for hens isn't an issue. The navy is a nice deep blue; ends are not serged, which may be an issue for some.

DH said they were unpacking socks, sweaters, and scarves, so I guess the hens have arrived in downtown PDX :D

    HTH!

    1. I agree that the size is a little odd. I was thinking most novelty scarves are much shorter or in silk or cotton. The feel is this reminds me of a fall/winter layering scarf, but the print reads as a summer accessory.

Can't exactly picture wearing this over bare shoulders to a wedding..oh wait, but with JC styling, anything is possible, right ? :D

    2. Hi Anthro Blogger, it's not terribly itchy, but I'm a little sensitive to wool. I typically have to wear thin tees beneath 100% wool sweaters. I love JC's cashmere/silk wraps and would have loved for this to be a similar fabric content, or even all silk/all cotton.

  24. Thanks for the picture. I have the hunter gatherer scarf from Madewell that is covered with small foxes and raccoons and wear it often. I wouldn't be caught dead in the sweater, but I would wear this.

  25. Just thought I'd mention there is a small piece in September "Lucky" talking about how novelty sweaters with animals are popular right now. They show Kate Bosworth in an owl sweater, and sweaters with dogs on them from Burberry and Forever 21. They suggest skipping the expected jeans and wearing them with a pencil skirt.

  26. Scarf=cute and workable
sweater=cover of "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive The Bus" (children's book)

  27. Barnyard animal as mascot. Hummm....I stopped in the B&M and didn't see any other hen stuff...but I wasn't really looking. What I did notice is that if you like the jacquard dot silk pants and blouses by JC, but don't like the price, never fear! I saw blouses in the very same silky dot patterns by Tommy Hilfiger at Macy's, at H& M and at The Limited. In fact The Limited had it made into a jacket...which I bought. It's very cute. And regular price $89.50, but I won a 50% off discount card. They were having a game of sorts. I also bought a maroon/navy striped skirt to wear with it. They had it styled ala JC...striped skirt, chambray shirt and jacquard dot silk jacket. I was wearing a chambray shirt and when I tried it on it looked great together. So the skirt and the jacket cost me $79.50. I'm thinking that it's easy to duplicate any JC look since all store lines are looking JCrewish to me lately.

    1. LOL-Love that last line. I'm veering Far far away from Jcrew this season bc of this redundancy. Like, I'm on the verge of going Goth.

  29. I did see something yesterday that made me say "ahhh!".....then "ARG!". I spotted the new teardrop cabochon earrings. Love! Need! The price! $78.00 for costume earrings kills me. Why are they so expensive? How long will I have to wait until they go on sale I wonder.....wwaaaa!

  30. I can use a small dose of cuteness via a scarf or socks (my PS and I agree that the sweater is not pour moi). Hope my B&M gets the accessories in, so I can check them out IRL.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I posted a pic of the scarf today as well. Shopwithm.blogspot.com. Bear with me and my iPhone posts while I wait for a new computer!

  32. I went yesterday to see if the scarf was in my store yet, but nada. I did finally get to see the sweater in person though. Eh. Didn’t feel it. The ones in person were already getting the fuzzies too.

The verdict is still out for me on the critters. I love the me some owl stuff though like what Burberry is doing, but then again I've had a love affair with owls since I received a vintage owl necklace many years ago.

  33. While I remain concerned as to the potential pilling, I wore my hen sweater in navy last week (it's REALLY, REALLY cold in my office - we're not all men in long suits! - so I tend to roll out my fall clothes a bit early) and it was really such an attention getter. I was receiving compliments all day! I get that the print is not for everyone, but personally it's my favorite item I've purchased for the fall so far.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I agree with others about how you wear it is what makes it age appropriate, it makes me think of the heart me sweater from last year and the tippi sweaters from this year with the heart. Some people can pull it off as age appropriate and some not. I'm 21 and loved the heart sweater, but unless the hen sweater gets a drastic fs price cut it probably won't make it to my closet :)

  35. I bought the scarf last week before I read this post...I absolutely adore it. It was a splurge at $65 but I think it'll get a lot of wear...the print is so cute but subtle enough to go with a lot of outfits. I'm also thinking about getting the iPhone case...too cute!
