J.Crew Updates Website with New Arrivals!

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Joanie & JulieStyles (in this post), as well as Dalya, Andréa & Irina, who let us know that J.Crew had an update to its website today (click here to view online).

There are some new arrivals for men (click here) & women (click here). {wahoo!} It looks like Crewcuts (click here) has been updated, but not the J.Crew Collection (click here).

The August catalog (click here to view) is available to view. However, the latest Fall/September catalog is not yet up.

Exciting News: J.Crew is offering free shipping on all orders with code FREESHIP! This code expires Sunday, August 19, 2012.

And there is more...

J.Crew is also offering free shipping on select handbags & shoes. (As some of you already pointed out, most bags already qualified for free shipping as they are priced over $175.) This offer ends November 8, 2012.
As for new arrivals... I am very excited about what I am seeing. There are lots of items that look absolutely fabulous.

Want. The Tippi sweater in colorblock stripe (item 11809; $95.00) is perfect! I love the stripes. I love the colors. This is the sweater you wear all the time, with anything (from jeans to capris to skirts).

So cute! I saw the French Hen Sweater (Item 14492; $95.00) in store earlier this week and it is just as cute in person. Now I thought the sweater was "too young" for me, but kudos to J.Crew who styled it in such a way on the mannequin, that it would easily work for all ages.

Big category winner- Jackets! I am super jazzed about what J.Crew has in store for blazers! Take the Collection crepe shawl blazer (item 99209; $350.00). The shawl collar on the tailored jacket looks chic. Can't wait to check this number out in person!

Plea to J.Crew. I am over dresses and skirts that are {way} above the knee. Some of us are tall (not model tall, but tall enough), that we are unable to comfortably wear these items. (I would like to bend down without the worry of flashing an innocent passerby.) Please J.Crew, add a couple of inches to those hem lines!

What items are you most excited about and why? Which items are you surprised (or not surprised) to see? Which items did you hope would be included? Were you expecting a bigger roll-out today? Also, did you receive the latest catalog? :)

  1. Alexis - Love your pick!

I saw a LOT to love this time! My especial favourites were the Nicky top (reminds me of the old Frances cami), the blazers, the brocade cheetah skirt (I am trying very hard to justify this one!!!!)
    All my picks are here:

    1. I like the Nicky top too...I wonder if it has been running large like all of the other ruffle collar sleeveless silk popovers?

  2. I like the blazers but I'm not feeling the dresses at all.

  3. A lot of cute stuff but the prices are ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yikes! The prices are crazy and some if the items are so inappropriate and unnecessary to be dropping $200-300 on one item. I am now understanding throw away fashion- but $300 an item throwaway?

  5. I was also surprised that this fall's hacking jacket comes in such sombre colours compared to last year.

  6. The wild side bangle and Lulu Frost bracelets are cool..

    1. agree on the lulu frost bracelets. was thinking of going with one color for the necklace (emerald green) and lavender for the bracelet. that 300 necklace is kind of crazy-- wonder how it looks in person!

  7. anyone know if the green shirt with a jeweled collar is on the website? I cant seem to find it and wanted to know how much it was.

  8. Glad to see the Sterling skirt is already out! I never got a chance to try it on last year (and to be honest was never interested in any of the colors offered) but the retro jade and crimson maple are delicious!

Also loving the Argyle Tippi. YAY Fall!

    1. I blogged about the return of the Sterling skirt in this post on my blog last Thursday. There will be 7 colors offered this year, 4 online this morning, and 3 more to debut in November (also noted in my post). :)

    2. Yep, saw your post! I was just happy to see that they debuted earlier than September as you mentioned! Trying to decide if I should get the retro jade now or wait for the sheer mint :)

  9. I was also loving the hen sweater-until I found out it was made of the dream fabric. Every dream sweater I have had has become house only wear after the first time out :(. Maybe the fbric has gotten better? I haven't bought one since 2009

  11. There are definitely some cute pieces I'm liking from this rollout! Many the same as you Alexis! The Colorblock Tippi, French Hen, Collection Crepe Blazer (ouch, the price!), the coats! Factory has some nice new arrivals as well.

  12. Well, I WAS excited. Then I looked at descriptions.

The draped skirt is poly. Pass.

The optic dot dress is poly. Another pass, although even if it had been made of a decent fabric, it's "above the knee" and I know that means mid-thigh on me.

Boucle peplum jacket is cotton and acrylic, which is a little like mixing silk and a brillo pad. Another pass.

I have a passing interest in the colorblock top which is hopefully a light weight wool.

Good thing I already have plenty of fall clothes.

    1. I saw the colorblock top in store yesterday, touched it and was SURE it was a poly or rayon crepe. It felt so cheap, I didn't even check the tag. Very surprised its wool.

  13. The schoolboy blazer in Herringbone is so pretty in both the blue and the pink. I also think the Collection Crepe shawl blazer is very pretty, but am concerned the colors will be very bright in person. I am thrilled that the Sterling skirt was brought back again this year, and do plan on getting the black and at least one color (if the quality is the same as last year).

I also want to mention that there are new promo-priced items for both the women and men this morning. I have updated both lists, and you can see them on my blog. :)

  14. I love the colorblock tippi and the hen sweater (but dream material - ew!)and the schoolboy. Heading over to B&M today.

  17. I've changed my avatar to celebrate my 4th year of not buying anything with "Dream" yarn - it is SUCH crap. Solidarity, JCA's! Don't forget that the Cambridge cables are also made of the dream blend. Aaaaaanyway...

I love to read the JCA's opinions - even more than the new arrivals! I'm off to check them out but will be back.

    1. I reread your review of the Peplum Jacket. You mentioned it is tts. It looks like you are wearing it over a short sleeve tee. Do you think it can be layered over a long sleeve shirt as is shown in the online model shot? thanks!

      Delete
    2. I think that would look messy irl, but I am rather OCD about things like that. I think cotton shirt will create bulk in the waist area if you tuck it in and peplum will not lay straight. The sleeves I think are wide enough and long enough, but my arms are not muscular by any means. Maybe with one of those cotton/silk think shirts? hth

      Delete
    3. Thanks so much. I like your idea much better.
I just noticed it comes in xxs even though the description says 'slim fit'. Confusing!

      Delete
    4. maryeb, I tried on this jacket with a long sleeve blouse yesterday and it was fine although I found the sleeves to be borderline snug in the arms. I think this could work with a shirt like the model is wearing but I would recommend something thin and/or fitted. The material of this jacket is thin so anything thick would create bulk or unflattering lines.

      Delete
  19. I was wondering if anyone could comment on the Hacking jacket and whether I should get it instead of schoolboy? Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The Hacking jacket is much longer with a slimmer fit than the Schoolboy. It just depends on what shape looks better on your frame and what you'll be wearing it with. You can see a Hacking sillouette on me here and here; here are some pics of various Schoolboys. HTH!

      Delete
    2. thanks so much! i'm really torn.

      Delete
    3. I feel like the Schoolboy is more a versatile choice, personally. It goes with everything...dresses, skirts, jeans, etc. While the Hacking is also somewhat versatile, because of its longer shape it sometimes doesn't look "right" with certain items.

      Delete
    4. thanks - yeah, i think i'll probably go with that. love your insight - thanks!!

      Delete
    5. I haven't seen this year's Hacking IRL yet but last year's was made of very thick material whereas this year's wool schoolboy is thinner than last year's wool schoolboy (almost felt like suiting wool). I consider the Hacking to be more of jacket for fall days that aren't cold enough to require a proper coat.

      Delete
    6. I'm a big fan of the Schoolboy and not a fan of the Hacking. Which is odd since I am long-waisted. But the one time I tried on a Hacking jacket in-store, I felt old and frumpy and weird. Like it was too long or something. I think it covered my butt, which weirded me out, lol.

Maybe dagmara is on the right track in that it's more coat-y and less of a jacket/blazer, if that makes sense.

      Team Schoolboy for me....

      Delete
    7. I agree with dagmara and elaine about the Hacking jacket being more coat-like...I tend to wear them on cold days with slim fitting pants like my Minnies. The longer length can look a bit dowdy when you wear them with skirts.

  20. Kind of "meh" for me. Liking the collection shawl blazer and some other collection items but yikes on the prices!!

Seeing so many synthetic blends in the fabrics really makes decisions for me...Sad to say I'll likely be looking at other stores.

Wouldn't mind seeing some more of the August roll out hitting sale. With a promo of course!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Love. I'm so glad to see the improved styling and more choices with this rollout. I liked the color-blocked looks for spring/summer but I'm getting a little tired of it now.

The Sterling Skirt rocks ... I have the black and have worn it to shreds. That slight a-line is really much more flattering on me than the pencil, so I am glad to see more colors, AND it appears to be all wool.

Yay on all the coat options, I need a new one or two, provided the fabrications are up to snuff. The Crepe Shawl is a lovely style but the eye-popping pink and yellow are not going to work for me. The Hen sweaters ... so French Country cute but I could never make those work

I also think the Peacock Necklace is adorable.

Prices are astronomical as others said ... nothing I have to have this minute so I will wait for markdowns.

    1. cousy, LOL! Me too!

What's with all the poly? And the Lulu frost tangerine resin petal necklace is just plain offensive to look at. The price tag is even more so!

Also, the shape of the Etta pump is just hideous. So chunky, with a nearly 4" heel? No thanks. Why can't they remake the silhouette of the original Juliet heels? The heel was chunky without being ugly because it was slightly tapered, and the heel height is actually practical to walk in. If I want ugly chunky heels I can find them in any store. What ever happened to J.Crew being unique? I guess I'm just bitter.

There is nothing I have to have in this rollout. I like lots of the jackets and skirts but I already have something similar... which is good for my wallet, I guess!

      Delete
    2. j.crewJD, agreed re: etta pump! the ann taylor block heels are similar, and they are better looking (in my opinion) AND cheaper!

      Delete
  23. I shouldn't have looked! I love the French Hen sweater, will probably pay retail on that even though that's something I rarely do. I also love the Jules dress in Foulard and the pencil skirt in electric plaid, they're both Collection items so I'll wait for a markdown

    ReplyDelete
  24. I also adore the French Hen sweater! I do have the Heart Tippi and Orchard Tippi, so I feel like I may already have enough whimsy at the moment, but I do really like the navy blue one. Total crap-o-la regarding the Dream sweater blend, though... I really want the Dream cardigan, but not if it's going to pill the first wearing. They NEED to revert back to the original material blend. Seriously.

I like the Peter Pan collar tee, but not at $75!! Maybe if it was a sweater, but a tee? I also like the Tortoise-Button sweatshirt. Ugh, hate the prices. Wishing for sweet little % off promo, but we all know that's not gonna happen... I'll be enjoying my 40%/30% deal at the Gap today.

    1. I'm not entirely sure why they're calling the Peter Pan collar tee, well, a tee. I ordered it a couple weeks ago to check it out and LOVE it. Much more hefty than a tee and very reminiscent of the original Jaspe tops from a few years ago.

  27. Thoughts:

    - Looking forward to trying the Sterling skirt, but the item pics looks a little different than the image from last year that I've clipped to Polyvore... less A-line, more straight. I hope that the design hasn't changed.

    - The Collection shawl blazer...is this supposed to be this year's Bella/Lexington? For $350, why didn't they make the buttons functional (if somebody wanted to wear it that way)? I think there were some construction shortcuts in here somewhere - and with a starting price point $100 more than better made jackets from years past.

    - The Collection jeweled-collar sweater looks better in the item pic. Think it's pinned back under the model's arms?

    - Oversize Merino sweater looks interesting (and has pockets!). Would like to see this IRL.

    - Didn't Talbots already do the Optic-dot dress this year? I think Amy Sedaris was wearing it in that Downy commercial.

    - No.6 in the Looks We Love section has a blue Peter Pan shirt with a grey collar. This is cute - but does it actually exist?

    - Overall, prices seem too high for what you get (poly/acrylic). Is this how DL is conditioning us - so that 20% off these prices seems like a good deal even though it's maybe what the starting price point should have been?

As always, thanks to all the JCA's that review, take IRL pics, and offer opinions on items. You are all an invaluable resource (and provide a sometimes much needed reality check)!

    1. ITA on the shawl collar blazer. I was turned off by the hook & eye closure, it just seems odd. It's also odd that both stock photos are cockeyed on the mannequin (and puckered at the shoulder). Not that I would buy this in those garish hues anyway but sometimes items are available in additional colors later so I thought I'd take a peek.

    2. i just chatted with an SA and the Sterling skirt is a little different than the one last year.

Here are the measurements for size 4:

      Lenght (old 25.25, new 23.625)
      Waist (old 29.25, new 29.125)
      Hip (old 40, new 38.75)
      Sweep (old 46, new 42.75)

So the new skirt is shorter and indeed a straighter cut. This is good news for me (and xoxo I think) but if you loved the last year's fit you may be disappointed.

      Delete
    3. ajc, thanks for posting the measurements. I think I may have to try it in the new shape, as you correctly stated it is probably good news for me since last year's was a disaster on my figure. Very unfortunate for those who want the more pronounced A-line shape though.

      Delete
    4. Xoxo, I hate the closure too. I guess if I liked it I would only wear it open.

      Delete
    5. silver_lining, I was intrigued by the oversize merino sweater and tried that on yesterday. There's a review up on my blog today. Definitely oversized, it's low cut, but it's soft and perfect for throwing on. It has pockets but the material is possibly nylon and not wool like the rest of the sweater.

  28. Nothing I have to have. I am discouraged by the fabric contents I have to say. Poly!
I do like the slim wool trench in pink but I bought the wool Icon in the heather acorn, a beautiful neutral that is very sensible too. I also have a Lady Day from years back in a lovely blush pink, maybe a better shade, not as bright.
Might be the first September roll-out in years I haven't rushed to order anything!
I like to read what others are loving however, that's the fun of it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Well....I didn't see much I want. Might get one Sterling skirt maybe in black. I'd like to see a navy or loden green skirt (it is THE color of the season), the only other skirt I like is $425.00. Please. I like the stovepipe trouser, but I'm sure I can buy that kind of thing anywhere, I like the looks of the chunky turtleneck but last's year version was a disaster so I'm not buying this years, not even bothering with bags or shoes since I haven't been impressed with quality and I've bought alot from other makers lately, and I don't like any of the Lulu Frost jewelry. I have a gift card which I probably apply toward a Tippi Cardigan. Just sort of underwhelmed I guess. And I know how proud they are about their curated special fabrics, but now we've got a jacket in the op art polka dot. Humm...you think they bought too much of this fabric? That op art pencil skirt keeps coming back like a bad penny....wouldn't you put this in the "mistake" column and not release another garment in that fabric? Just sayin'.

  31. Must hit my B&M at lunchtime. I am in LOVE with the french hen sweater in navy, and if I'm technically too old to wear it at age 32 (and 11+ months), oh well, I'm going to rock it anyway! With a pencil skirt and some heels, it's going to be work-appropriate and fabulous. Also in love with the Optic-dot dress but plan to wait for sale on that one (or try my best anyway).

Anyone know if there's still any summer sale left in the NYC B&Ms? I was in 45th/Madison a couple weeks ago - picked up the Tippi in swiss dot which I've already worn twice and I love it - and the sale section was gone. I saw maybe one tiny rack if I'm remembering correctly? Anyway, just trying to get some idea of what kind of selection I can expect this afternoon :) Is it lunchtime yet??

  33. Review of the port of call sweatshirt in this post.

Collectively it looks like they are all over the place, stylewise. I still like a few things like the Tippi in swiss dot, which we know as the tiny bow sweater. I tried on the excursion vest the other day and liked it. I was admiring the cambridge turtleneck in dark merlot until the mention of dream fabric was made. Oh that rag? 34. Haven't made it past the sweaters yet. Was hoping they would get a clue and leave out angora from the cambridge cable sweater material this year... but no. They have included it again. Did they fail to notice these sweaters languishing in the final sale section for $19.99 last year!?!?

  35. Hi straycat - I LOL'd at your op art polka dot/bad penny analogy. IMO, if they constructed the pencil skirt so that the dots lined up in the back they it probably would have sold out. It's like somebody said yesterday, if they were to step it up just a little bit they'd make MORE money!

Oh - also glad to see the return of Edda Petursdottir, even if it is to the Factory section. Is it me, or is Factory the dumping ground for "older" JC models of yore? Angela Highsmith, Renata Maciel dos Santos, etc. It's gonna be the end of an era when they send Mona Johannesson to the Factory section!

  36. I really like the look/colors of the stovepipe trousers but the product description does not say lined, which means they're not. Pass. ITA on the dress length, Alexis! The color block Jules dress looks obscenely short on the model.
General impression is too many Jules dresses, too many capris, not enough full length pants or knee-length dresses.

Otherwise I'm interested in trying on the hacking in the new colors. The new coats look lovely too but my coat closet is already overflowing...

  42. So disappointed to hear that the Sterling skirt is substantially different than last year's version. The photo looks very different, and then AJC's measurement information confirmed it--four inches less in the sweep. That shifts the entire shape. Why make a skirt and call it A-Line if really it's just a loose pencil skirt?

The Sterling was the #1 item on my list and the only thing I really wanted from this roll-out, but I think it just fell off . . . I'll have to see the JCAs' IRL pics before I order.

    1. J.Crew seems to be tinkering with the items that did not need fixing (like No2 pencil fabric change and Sterling skirt shape change) while not making the changes that would be welcomed (like dream yarn!).
Even if I am now willing to try the Sterling again because the new shape is probably better for me, I think it would be wiser to offer a bestseller skirt that has a different fit than a pencil to accommodate different body shapes. Maybe that's what made it sell well in first place J.Crew?

  44. I haven't commented in a long time but the sterling skirt fiasco is pushing me out of retirement. WHY!!!!!??!!! Did they change the skirt so much from last years version. It sold out last year at full price ( some lucky ones picked
It up on sale on popback) I would call that a success. I don't get why Jcrew is obsessed with short skirts and dresses. I'm not tall at 5'6" but their regular pencil skirts are way to short to be office appropriate on me. (thank goodness they are now making talls in some). 23" worn high on my waist is barely going to be long enough. Arg!!!! Jcrew why must you mess with a good thing. It obviously was popular enough for you to bring back so why change it so much? Don't get me started on how there is no way the models skirt is 23". It would almost be a mini on someone 6' tall. ; ).

  45. I haven't bought a wool coat from J.Crew since 2010 but I am intrigued by the double-cloth slim trench. I have the double-cloth Lady Day from 07 and Marie from 08 and this may be the stupid question of the day but has the double-cloth fabric changed significantly since then?

I like the argyle Tippi sweaters but I am sensitive to wool and I'm afraid they would be itchy. I think I'll check other retailers first to see if I can find similar in cotton. If J.Crew is doing them then surely others are too.

What is up with the Collection Brushed Cashmere Popover that is priced at $950 US? It looks like polar fleece.

    1. xoxo, I bought a the double cloth metro coat last year, and the fabric was the same as the fabric on my older (2008 I think) double cloth lady day. This seems to be one of the things they don't change... but who knows what they've done this year!

      Delete
    2. J.CrewJD, thank's for letting me know that the double-cloth was the same last year. I think I'm going to give it a try, the Nordic blue peacoat was the last coat I bought at J.Crew and I remember the blue sold out super fast so I don't want to miss this one if it is indeed a winner.

  46. I saw the Schoolboy Houndstooth blazer at the store yesterday and tried it one. It fits TTS. I have to say that J. Crew did a fantastic job in the quality and material this year. Elbow patches are soft leather and the wool is not thin but substantial. The houndstooth pattern is vivid. It is a beautiful blazer. Heads up though, the in store price is $228 while the on line price is $258.

  48. Well, I went back and looked at the site after I got home from my pedicure. After my initial excitement, it turns out I am not excited about buying anything at full price! NOTHING!!!! and some of the things I liked turned out to be poly, which is a non-starter for me!

In the end, I have decided to order the jade valentinas which I do still love (and with free shipping and my 20% coupon are affordable) and get the Nicky top in jade as a ride-along and wait and see what I see in France and see here in the city...I could order a coat, but I am thinking they will go on promo and I will buy then and it is a while until I can wear a wool coat anyhow (thank goodness!)

  49. Just reviewed a number of the new rollout items here, including the Sandwashed Silk Tee, the Multicolor Tweed No. 2 Pencil Skirt, the Colorblock Top, the Navy Tweed Cafe Capris, the Colorblock Stripe Tippi, the Boucle Peplum jacket (loved that one), and actually a few other things!

Ok, now that I got that out of the way, I'll be finishing the September catalog, which I'll post back on. There will be more reviews forthcoming, as well.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I like the colorblock Tippi but not for $95. How long before Old Navy knocks it off and the price drops? ;)

I like the Tortoise Button Sweatshirt but not for $79.50. If it makes it to FS + extra % off, maybe.

I really didn't see anything else that did it for me. Just still want my snake-print No. 2 skirt and possible the snake-print Tippi.

Browsed final sale this morning to see what was worth FREESHIP and was able to scoop up the tipped linen schoolboy, which I've wanted since it came out. $129 is more than I wanted to pay but I think it's a keeper. if not, I will offer it on the exchange before ebay. :)

Also saw a bunch of Arrowhead Ikat items I don't think I'd ever seen before. If there's another extra 30% off sale at some point I might get the maxi skirt and the cami.

Truthfully glad that I didn't see anything else I wanted. Somehow things always seem to sneak up on me in the sale section, lol.

  51. Sadly I'm a little disappointed in the rollout, especially with the dresses. I was really hoping to love one.

I'm also skeptical of items because the website photos are often misleading. For example, I tried on the silk zebra scoopneck blouse and found the sleeves to be wide compared to the model pic. Plus it was boxy/loose on me in a size that fit my shoulders (which are pretty narrow). The website says tailored fit, IMO tailored in the shoulders maybe.

I was also disappointed in the poly used for the optic dot dress and drapey skirt. Way overpriced IMO and I'm not interested in buying poly.

Once again I find the reviews by JCAs so invaluable. I liked the paisley applique top but know from ajc's great reviews that it is boxy and shorter, the IRL pic was so helpful compared to the pic on the website.

OT but I'm wondering if the photo of the reddish pencil skirt from ajc's blog could be the autumn coral color??

  54. All of this skimpy out on cuts is really making me mad. Do they think that cutting a couple inches here and there on garments is going to save them tons of money. It's a cheap cop out. Time for me to move on if I can't buy the same item with the same name 12 months apart and not be guaranteed it IS the same cut and garment. I bet the fabric is inferior on the sterling skirt too this year. I'm glad I got two last year. How very disappointing.

  55. first time commenting here, but i completely agree with your comment about dress length! i am 5'7, but i am mostly legs and the jules dress is almost obscene on me, even if i size up! bending down would be completely out of the question.

in terms of new arrivals, i featured the hen sweater in a blog post this morning about julia child, and i do love the navy! does anyone have any feedback on the booker boots?

  56. I am loving all the new pencil skirts (the cheetah and electric plaid really caught my eye), even though they are too impractical to be dropping over $200 on. I think one of my favorite pieces is the ponte knit dress--it really has that 'Audrey Hepburn' silhouette and is definitely something I would be fine with spending a little more money on (granted that it fits well). Hope that they come out with other colors besides black though. I was disappointed to see that most of the new dresses were the Jules silhouette. I don't think that baggy shape really does anything for most people. Overall I agree with everyone that the prices are getting out of control...a lot of the items are pretty, but not anything that I would buy at full price.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I know I'm getting to be a little one-note about the knock-off factor, and JC is just copying higher-end items anyway, but SOOO many things in this roll-out seemed ripe for lower-end rip-offs. Stripes, dots, Peter Pan collars, color block etc. I know that it is the nature of trends to pop up everywhere, but I didn't feel there was anything particularly distinctive here.

Plus, JC is already knocking itself off with the Factory line. What is the point of having hacking jackets at $228 in retail and $188/$138 in Factory? Are the price points really that different?

    1. One last thing about the Sterling Skirt and then I'd better sign off for the day: In the Crimson Maple photo on the model, look how in the front view her hip is popped to make the skirt look like it flares more than it really does. And in the back view it is clear that she is wearing a couple of sizes too large. Again, to emphasize the flare that isn't there?

      Delete
    2. Frankly, I think the skirt looks like a sack on the model. And people tell me that Brooks Brothers is matronly. Ha! It must be the crewlade.

  59. I wish they made the French Hen sweater in Crewcuts...unfortunately, I think it's too cute for this 34 year old mama. But...I haven't tried it on yet, so...

I tried the colorblock Tippi on in my B&M yesterday, and found it to be very flattering. Love that I will be able to wear it with pretty much everything in my closet.

I'm interigued by the new stovepipe pants. I love the slimmer leg, but I'm not sure if will work on my "athletic" thighs". I wish they were lined. However, I may still design my entire holiday wardrobe around the boulevard green ones if they are flattering on me.

  60. Also, for those of you who mentioned that they would love a sweater with the peter pan collar, they had one at my B&M. It came in navy or burgundy with a cream (?) collar. If I remember correctly, it was wool and alpaca.

    1. I tried that on yesterday. It looks just like the top online. It was ridiculously too thin to be called a sweater and I guess that was the alpaca that made it unbelievable itchy. Cute top, but I was disappointed with how it was made.

  62. I went into my B&M last night just to look around. The hen sweater and the peter pan collar sweater are cute but not age appropriate for me. The postage stamp mini in navy tweed is lovely but certainly fits the name, tiny!!! Colorblock top as mentioned nasty material felt like a burlap sack. Only items I would consider at a sale price was the boucle peplum jacket, the Collection Scoopneck in Burgundy Silk Foulard and the colorblock cardigan in blue/green, at least that was 100% merino wool. I asked about the catalog since it was not out. SA that knows me said that they were not allowed to put them out yet but went into the back and gave me one. WTF. You have the merchandise on the floor but crazy J Crew polices prevail as usual.

  65. I know there is a lot of love for it but last year's sterling skirt was a disaster on my figure. You can see it in both colorways on my blog HERE.
I might actually try it in the narrower shape this season, although I do have the Francie skirt in several colors and I think that the shorter, almost tulip shape is a more flattering silhouette overall, at least for me. BTW, if anyone has the Francie papaya in size 4, 6 or 6P that they are not wearing, I would love to buy it. dunc209@shaw.ca

    2. XOXO, I went back to your blog and actually thought the Sterling skirt looked nice on you, but I know how some cuts can feel "off." I have the Francie in the "majestic purple" (really, blue) and would love to find it in the peony! And the wool is so amazingly plush and velvet-y.

      Delete
    3. Hexicon, when I was looking at the blog post today I didn't think it looked that bad either but I remember IRL it was pretty awful. I love the wool flannel on the Francie, it's very plush.

    5. Remember when J.Crew used to have the pop-up survey after you order, asking which past items they should bring back? They may want to try that again, I'm sure they would get some excellent info. Some of the past items were just wonderful.

    6. Xoxo I know exactly what you mean, sterling skirt had about 6 extra inches around the hips and while it does not look bad in the pictures it was awful irl when you start moving, it was very dowdy on me too. It was one of worst skirts I ever tried, it only compared with Jardin maxi although I tried it on after LOVING it on Audreybella. Pictures can be misleading there are some items that I questioned after seeing the pictures but my instincts were always right. If it felt bad it WAS bad.

    1. I wanted to love the Sterling skirt last year, but I had the same problem. I looked kind of lost in it. I wasn't planning on trying it again this year until I saw ajc's post about the changed measurements. There is a chance it could work for me now, but I understand the disappointment for the people who loved it the way it was last year.

  68. I stopped in yesterday and I saw the hen sweater (way to cutesty for this old broad), the hideous rubbery printed herringbone sweatshirt. All I had to do was touch that thing....ick. The tan/black sleeveless top. Again...horrid fabric. Unlined pants, everything was wrinkly, knits and sweaters hanging ( one of my major pet peeves), Peter Pan collars (I'm old...do I need to say more?). I wasn't tempted to even bother trying anything on. And yes....they are not only knocking off other designers, but themselves. I used to think Talbots and Brooks Brothers were to boring for me. Well, I'm taking another look. JC is starting to look too juvenille for me and too cheap. And I'm tired of the clothing being modeled two sizes too big....it's misleading and isn't that fad over? I looked at the sterling skirt and thought it looked like last year's skirt, but you guys are right. They have it styled to LOOK like last year's skirt. Thanks to ajc for letting us know it's not. Sorry to sound so disgruntled.....

  69. Got the french hen sweater on my lunch break! The salesgirl said it just came in and they've already sold several. I very nearly picked up the postage stamp mini in navy to wear it with - which I didn't realize is the skirt it's paired with online - but then I talked myself out of two full price purchases in one trip. Now I'm thinking I should've gone for it... the pieces look amazing together in person and I'm short so minis are never an issue for me. I think I just found the next item on my wishlist! 2. Funny, I got on the heartthrob bandwagon late last year and missed out. I was excited to hear when it looked like they would be re-releasing for fall/winter.

But honestly, now that the print has been knocked off and is everywhere, I couldn't care less. It feels tired already. Makes me wonder why they waited so long to bring it back (assuming it is brought back).

Jcrew has been successful re-releasing classic styles year after year because so many other retailers are chasing the trends and fast fashion crowd. In the past they've been able to strike a unique balance of stylish but classic (the colors def help!) that was pretty niche at the old price points. Now it seems like they are really upping the trendy items and cutting corners on the classics and I have to think that there are going to be some HUGE sales in our future. Raising prices, declining quality and items that you can find at numerous other stores at lower prices makes JC just another mall store in the crowd to me, sadly. I sincerely hope they are reading this blog and come to their senses, soon!!

  71. By the way, if anyone's looking for the classic mini in the blue or mint, the 45th/Madison store in NYC had a whole rack of them. I wanted both colors but I needed a 0 and they only had sizes 2-12. 77. Was the design team dropping acid? What is with the colors? And that comes from a girl who loves to wear color. But eek to the "Collection" - a loose term - skirt in electric plaid. They should have stopped one color short in the multi-tweed if they wanted me interested. And oh how daring, another sequin tweed jacket... Really not seeing much new stuff. The Collection shawl blazer - hook & eye closures don't stay closed very well when one is seated. Also, looks cheap.

I can hardly even get through the so-called Collection montage - ENOUGH with the messy hair, mouthes hanging open & pointdexter glasses. To paraphrase Tim Gunn: Don't bore me, J.Crew.

J.Crew's fall offerings used to make me swoon. Now they make me yawn.

  79. I am really frustrated to hear that they have turned the Sterling skirt into what is basically another pencil skirt this year. Why in the world would they mess up such a good thing? The entire ordeal is absolutely absurd, IMO. They do have customers that cannot or do not want to wear their pencil skirts, and the Sterling from last year actually gave those customers another skirt option. Now we are left without once again. I am really glad that I at least have my Sterling skirts from last year, but I was still really looking forward to picking up additional colors this year. Looks as if another retailer is going to get my money instead, since I'll be looking elsewhere for skirts this season.

  80. For everyone who is upset about the demise of the sterling skirt, you may want to try the Land's End a-line skirt from last year, which is now on clearance for $39.99.

The persian rose is very similar to the berry color of the J.Crew double serge pencil skirt, and the washed teal is a dead ringer for nightfall blue from a couple years ago. The fabric is excellent, nearly identical to the J.Crew double serge wool of years past.

They do run big so if you are smaller than a size 2-4, you're out of luck. I am a 6 usually at J.Crew, and the 4 fits me well. Also, it is nice and long. I love this skirt and one of these days, I will get a full review up. It also comes in petites, yay! I got mine during an extra percent off sale... so if you can wait for one of those, it's an exceptionally good deal, but even at the current sale price it is a good buy.

  81. Hexicon, I agree that the last two rollouts are ripe for being knocked-off. It just feels like the same stuff is everywhere. I don't think I've ever felt like every retailer was selling the same thing this much. JC seemed to be marching to the beat of their own drum which I liked, but it's really hard to tell the difference between them and everybody else this season.

Bummed about the Sterling skirt - will be trolling eBay, probably along with the rest of the disappointed JCA's. JC, I bet you lost quite a few full-priced purchases today. :/

    ReplyDelete
  82. As a longtime silent reader I had to register finally to chime in on this thread. SO disappointed by this rollout, where to begin? First, the dresses have been too short for at least a couple seasons now, what is up with that? I tried the Allie dress and it was so short I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing it anywhere, back it went. In the few dresses offered in Tall sizing, some of those are even too short (I'm looking at you Arabelle dress), and I'm under 30 yrs old and only 5'8"/5'9", so I'm taller than most but not a monster, I just want to look polished.

Besides the Allie dress, the only new rollout item I have tried on is the Peter Pan collar tee and it was promptly returned. I hated it. The material is so thick that I don't know how this is a tee, it's slightly scratchy, and the cut is very boxy and also short. I barely lifted my arms and there's my midriff! I tried the grey and the heathering was just too much. I agree with an earlier poster that I like the blue top they show in their slideshow with the gray peter pan collar (slide 6, looks we love), but where is that? Not for sale on the site currently, of course. Ugh. The only items I really loved from a recent order were the Memo dress in Tall--so classy, great for work or really anything. Not too low cut, and the tailoring and fabric are gorgeous. I also loved the pair of Cece leather ballets I ordered. I've been staying away from JC shoes for a long time since they typically ran small, narrow, and uncomfy, but I got these in a 10.5 (thank you for offering this size finally!) and they were buttery soft and oh-so-comfy. So, I'll keep them.

Overall, what a pricey roll out though, and nothing very inspiring. For these prices, the fabric quality and attention to detail needs to go up. Or, the prices on some items simply need to come down. I guess they think if they start em high, then when they give us a modest discount we'll all come running. Maybe it works but it's a crappy way to do business. The colorblock Tippi, for example, is super cute but $95 for a basic merino sweater? What? Eye-roll, and this is coming from a JCA for many, many years. I'm starting to look elsewhere to spend my fall money!

  85. I was on limited time so I popped into the store and grabbed the Collection jeweled-collar sweater (94058) to try on at home. I sized down from a S to an XS like others had mentioned they were doing. The fit isn't as boxy one size down, but it is shorter (ok for my shor torso - probably too much if you have a normal to long torso) and although the arms aren't too tight, they are form-fitting. I think the XS makes it look more like the picture and it is comfortable on me, size-wise.

The thing that is going to make me return it is the God-awful scratchiness. I tried it on with a tank and with a tee underneath, and I just don't know if I can handle it. For almost $200 with tax, I would have expected a much softer knit. I am somewhat sensitive to wool, but I wouldn't say overly so, and it is just plain uncomfortable to wear. If you are at all sensitive to wool, steer clear of this sweater.

I am upset because I think the design is adorable and I would have been happy to pay full price for it. The fabric is a killer though. Not at this price point.

    1. This is exactly why I returned this item, the itch factor was just too much. I can wear most wool sweaters without a problem, but this one was driving me completely insane, I couldn't wait to get it off.

I actually pre-ordered it and was perfectly happy to pay full price since I love the design, but I knew that I just wouldn't wear it in the end because of the discomfort.

  86. The only thing I've added to my wishlist from this rollout is the No. 2 Pencil in Crimson Maple. I hope it's a true, rich burgundy in person and not brown-toned like last year's Henna colour. Has anyone seen this colour IRL?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Caitlin....I hope the Crimsom Maple color isn't too close to the Golden Burgandy color. I have that skirt and don't need another one in that color. Hope someone can report on it for us!

  88. Hexicon, we are on the same wavelength today. "Stripes, dots, Peter Pan, color block..." those were the exact words going through my head as I browse the roll-out today. Let me add sequins, jewelled collar, front-tie, peplum.... and why are they still doing neon shades? The sameness with everyone is killing me. They then decide to differentiate with branding and ads and pricing. It was so awesome of them to let the products speak for themselves before, no ads until now. We're expensive, so we're cooler and better???? I was just vacationing with my MIL and in one of the JC stores, I offered her my rewards card since nothing interested me. She told me, "Thanks dear, but you brought me to an expensive Kohl's". I think this will be the season when I will finally get off the crewlade. I do not see any classics with a twist. Twisted logic, maybe. How can they fool around with the double-serge pencils and the sterling skirt? Plushy becomes fuzzy. Do they think we won't notice? Time to get my old Jcrew out of storage and sit this season out.

    1. You said it best right here "I do not see any classics with a twist." Well put. I've never been one who wants to wear the latest trends head to toe all the time. I would rather spend a bulk of my shopping budget on quality basics that span seasons that on trendy pieces. And that is what brought me to J.Crew years ago...I knew I could get quality classic pieces with just enough edge to make it stand out.

You know...I'm the only one of my friends, coworkers, etc. that wears J.Crew anymore. I wonder if that is a some sort of sign? ha

  89. JRSConifer.....HA! Glad all my *itching is giving you a laugh! Us old broads can only put up with so much B.S. before we take our long established ideas and tastes on to other lines. Clearly I am not the target customer. JC is yelling that loud and clear. "Get out of here old lady with your want of longer hemlines and real fabrics!" Message received!!! Seriously though. I think a younger shopper may not be savvy to good quality fabrics and such, so maybe that's what JC is banking on. Cute, cheap (ummm....when it hits sale after two weeks) disposable garments seem to be their game now. By the way I just turned 55 and I don't have kids. Which means I can spend alot of bucks on me. And I do. Getting the message, JC?

    1. I think I am also ready to move off the crewlade. I am not paying almost $100 for a synthetic material sweater or top...just not. I have other items in my closet that I can reach for. But I was in BR last night and saw a red belt, for $35.00, it had on the back synthetic leather...WTF, no that would be fake leather or not leather. So I think JC is just one of many stores thinking they can push this material mess onto their consumers at high prices and we will go for it. I have always loved JC colors and styles but if you have to wear something underneath just so you can stand to wear it then it is time to walk away.

  90. Hey....are you guys getting the "You've been authorized for a pre-approved credit card" when ever you go to checkout and that when you proceed to checkout there is a message that says you are agreeing that you have read the offer? I just noticed this a couple weeks ago. Too little, too late, I'm afraid.

  91. Very unhappy with this rollout, and judging by the comments above, many JCAs feel the same way. The one piece I absolutely do not understand is the Collection No. 2 pencil skirt in Floral Brocade. What the whaa??? I do not understand the appeal. At first I thought it was just my phone, but then I got home and looked on my computer and it was still horrible. IMO, the pattern looks as though it belongs in a bad '80s movie.

  92. Nothing really popped out at me but the prices…ouch. At least, for me, by the time I really need anything for fall (late October/November) these items should be on sale. I did like some of the coats…but not extremely practical for me living in Texas and all. I do love the new Icon trench in wool-cashmere in the cabernet…but I’ve extremely nervous to purchase any kind of coat from J.Crew due to my awful experience last year with the whole prickly shoulder pads debacle. Ugh! No one at J.Crew was able to help on any of the issues I had with all that…left the worst taste in my mouth. Hope they resolved that issue.

And yay for taking off the zippers on the toothpick cords...but no yay for the price. Hope there is a promo.

  93. Did anyone peruse J.Crew last night and then notice that the price of some items went up today?

    Seriously irks me.

  94. Found out the difference in sweep between the new sterling skirt and the pencil skirt as well from an online SA.
"37.25 inches for the pencil and for the Sterling Skirt the sweep circumference is 44.75 for a Size 8"

Not as bad as I thought - online the skirts look almost identical!

  95. JRSconifer....I totally agree. It's not just JC using the crummy fabrics and fake materials. I don't shop in alot of stores because their materials are terrible. Wash a garment one time and it's a rag. What upsets me is that JC was in a different group in the past. I don't know what's happened...too much money spend in other areas like advertising, growing and expanding too much....but their focus isn't on classic well made clothes anymore. I'm seriously thinking I'm going to start shopping resale and consignment shops for older classic clothes. I know alot of you stalk ebay for older JC clothes, but I don't have a clue what size I would have worn "back then".

  96. Hi straycat - three words for shopping on eBay: know your measurements. Take garments that fit you well and lay them flat and measure them shoulder to shoulder, underarm to underarm, across the waist, hip, length, etc. I save these in a Notepad file for quick reference. A lot of sellers provide these measurements in their listings but you can (and should) always ask for them if you're not sure. There are some great pieces to be found on eBay.

  99. For what it is worth, I was at a factory store two weekends ago and felt like the fit was off on a number of items, and the promotions did not make the price point very appealing. I had to size down in everything and even then the fit was really not right. Stuck to the bubble necklaces.

Also, REALLY frustrating that they still show a black ballet flat in the store that looks very much like the basic b&m ballet, but then you open the box and it is VERY different in the material, trim, toe box etc. Why don't they just sell the show they are displaying, or vice versa?

  100. Did anyone see the sequin bow pencil skirt on ebay?? It was a sample piece and it was like the sequin bow pants but it was a hot pink wool skirt with the sequin bows on it. Well anyway I missed it and I wish I would of purchased it because I like it alot better than any of the new arrivals. If any JCA purchased and changes their mind, please let me know :)

  101. is it bad that i refuse to shop here without a promo anymore? and even then I only buy sale stuff 90% of the time?

Maybe I'm just a cheapie but factory items got me more excited than retail, probably because the price points are more my range

  102. LemonF., thank you so very much for pointing out that the CeCe flats come in 10-1/2 now (I am hoping that more are to come because there is a BIG difference in a size 10-1/2 and 11). I must have missed the announcement but finally I might be able to buy a shoe from JCrew. Got my fingers crossed that they made more than 2 for each collection and I am able to snag something before the shoes at the only size I can wear will sell out within minutes!!

  103. Sigh.

I was kind of loving the pretty this morning, but even when I was working full time (not just subbing/teaching on the side), I wouldn't have paid full price if the prices had been this high. It is really hard to swallow those prices when you know *KNOW* that the more exclusive pieces that have the higher prices are the what would have been regular J. Crew pieces in 2005, 2006, and 2007.

I am also in the "why" camp when it comes to the Sterling Skirt. I purchased the heather acorn in my size last winter, even though I was pregnant, because I figured it was a classic piece that I could use for a long time. I am SO glad I did because when I had lost enough of the baby weight I tried it on and it fit EXACTLY right, and is a dream in both styling and fabric.

When I read there would be more colors out this season, I was all, "ooh, better start saving" but now I am all, "probably going to have to say no."

I do buy J. Crew pencil skirts, but if you are a pear shape like myself, I have to deal with a significant gap in the waistband in order to have the hips fit right. The sterling skirt had a near 12 inch difference in the waist and hips, which means that it literally follows my curves.

Okay, I'm done. I may get a piece here or there this season, but not until sale, and most likely not in anything that is one of my staples (like the skirts).

If they mess with the double cloth fabric, I have a feeling we will take to the streets of NYC and personally protest in front of J. Crew. Right? It seems that is the last hold out of old school J. Crew.

BTW, to end my rant, this September is the 5th anniversary of the Paris Catalog. Just saying...

  104. My wallet is happy because I don't like much: the colorblock tippi cardi (which I've already seen in my b&m) and the midrise toothpick cords. I am thrilled that they are midrise - just hoping I'm as thrilled with the fit. I may change my mind after seeing items IRL, but - just meh for me.

  106. There is something about the new roll out, that I do not get. I had a few oohs and aahhs, but it feels forced. And most of the pieces I like are well above $200 'the collection pieces' (except coats, pumps and sequence skirts) Gasp! Maybe its because I'm not feeling Tom Mora as the head of women's wear. I thought when I first saw the collection back in February, I was drooling, but not anymore...comparing it to Marissa Webb's designs from fall/winter 2011, her collection was more cohesive and each piece works with every other piece whether it be collection or not...and it was more polished. This collection, though 'some' pieces are nice, I find the styling all over the place. I'm lost. Nothing stellar (especially the dresses they designed-yawn) I will wait for the FP discount or when some of these items go to sale in a few months...

    1. I agree about the dresses. They are so boring at the moment.

    2. JSR- you are totally right about the lack of cohesiveness! Fall is by far my favorite clothing season and this is the first time I can remember not being excited at all with the JC offerings. I hope Tom can find his way with the women's collection because it is depressing to not have my "wish list" aka shopping cart full.

  107. I've had a gift card for 2 months that I keep forgetting to use. Yah...that's how unexcited I've been. Anyway, today since there is free shipping I applied it to the Tippi Cardigan in the burgandy color. Because it matches the Golden Burgandy skirt and I already saw it in the store and it looks good on me. That's all I think I'll be buying for a while. Maybe a long while. I agree with everything you have all said. JC is way off the mark.

  108. Good morning ladies! Just wanted to add my purchases I made from the fall launch. I ended up getting the tippi in colorblock with the ankle toothpick jeans in classic rinse. None of my stores had that pant. I got the Oversized merino sweater in grey. I ended up getting the multistripe boat neck tee and the Peter pan collar.
I am also looking for the Sydney patent sandals in neon fushia - they were online two days ago now they vanished along with all the summer colors. If anyone spots these please let me know :)

  109. There are a lot of new promo-priced items for the women today. I've updated the list and posted it here. :)

    ReplyDelete
  110. I stopped by my B&M yesterday. I tried on the Peter Pan collar tee. Epic fail for me -- the shape is a little boxy and it's short through the torso. I'm more busty, so that's why it didn't work, but i still think it is darling. I also tried on the French Hen sweater in navy. Darn it, I didn't want to like it, but it's so cute! I gravitate towards the whimsical pieces, so I guess I should not be surprised. I took a pic in the dressing room and showed it to a friend. She squealed and said, "It's a bird wearing a jaunty beret! You must have it!" I haven't bought it yet... Still deciding if that's what I want to use my rewards card on. The sales associates were gushing about the cashmere in the sweater... They clearly have no clue about the craptacularness of the Dream sweaters. When I mentioned it, all I got was blank stares.

  111. I'm almost glad I didn't try the Sterling skirt last year because I'll have nothing to compare to the new version. Big a-line shapes don't work well on me because they cut into my waist, so this newer shape might be better on me anyway! Here's hoping!

  112. I saw people talking about the Francie skirt. I have a sz 0 in papaya that I've never worn, it deserves a good home. I will post it on the exchange on Monday.
