Is Bigger Better? J.Crew Bracelets
Seaside charm bracelet
(Item 95466)
Click here to visit product page
Regular: $125.00
I have noticed that a lot of J.Crew's jewelry, in particular their bracelets, are super chunky. Not only are the bracelets big, but they are quite heavy on the wrist. (Especially hefty for those of us who have slender wrists, like myself!)
I have quite a few bracelets from J.Crew and am surprised by both the size and weight, even the 1" Enamel Bangles are unexpectedly heavy.
So I came across the Seaside Charm Bracelet and thought it was actually quite pretty. The motif of boating/fishing was cute and minimal (compared to the Angler print dress!) However, when I saw the picture of the model wearing it, I couldn't believe how large it was!
It seems like the bracelets are too large and impractical to wear everyday. As an example, I own the Pacific Beaded Cascade Bracelet (Item 84907). I only wear it once in awhile (less than I would like, to be honest). I cannot use it for work because it ends up banging onto every table/work surface, damaging the bracelet itself (and driving me a bit nuts in the process). I always find myself pushing the bracelet up my arm to get it out of the way.
Do you mind the chunky/heavy jewelry? Would you prefer to see some of the designs/styles shrunk down to more "wearable" sizes? What do you think?

J.Crew 20% Off Sale Ends Today
That is right. Today is the last day of J.Crew's most recent 20% off sale. Although there were many items I would have purchased... I didn't buy a single thing!
Why? Because I was deterred by the thought of having to pay the (high) shipping fee. I find it amazing what the shipping code (or lack there of) psychologically does to me at the point of purchase! When confronted at the checkout with the $12-14 for shipping (on top of taxes) and with no applicable coupon in site, I end up asking myself the question, "Do I really need this?" And of course, the answer each time is "no, not really."
I have a feeling that my online shopping at J.Crew will decrease drastically in direct response to the lack of "free shipping" (or low minimum) shipping codes. (Mind you, I spend thousands at J.Crew per year. Although I typically purchase "on sale", I do really like their clothes and buy a lot.) Do you think your online shopping will decrease in the next year as well (if J.Crew won't offer any more shipping codes will low to no minimums?)

Calling all J.Crew Credit Card Customers
Right now, the "rewards" for being a J.Crew credit card member seem somewhat limited to me. The following is what they list:
I went ahead and found the credit card company's (World Financial Network National Bank) customer number: 1-888-428-8810 (TDD/TTY: 1-888-819-1918) | Monday - Saturday 8am-9pm ET; Closed Sunday.
I hope that those of you who are card members, call to voice your opinions/concerns in order to receive the rewards you deserve. Good luck! :)
- 10% off your first purchase (Too bad it's only a one time offer. The real reward would be if it was for every purchase!)
- $25 rewards card for every $500 you spend (Not bad. I can see my bill adding up quickly to $500.)
- Seasonal lookbook featuring designers' favorite looks (Which I already get and I am not a card holding member!)
- Complimentary standard alterations at any J.Crew store (Yet, in really small letters they state J.Crew Factory Stores as an exception.)
- Invitations by email to cardmember only private sales (Is this really true? For cardmembers: how often do you get those?)
- Early access to new arrivals in the J.Crew Collection (Define "early," because if it is only by one day then it is not much of a perk. Also, I buy "on sale" anyways- new arrivals rarely go on sale immediately.)
- Front of the line priority on phone orders (How often do you really wait on line to purchase an order that this becomes a real "reward"?)
- Personal shopping appointments any time you choose (Don't they offer that to anyone, regardless if you have a card or not?)
- Fast, easy account managemetn and bill pay (Not really much of a reward, considering most if not all card companies offer this.)

J.Crew Junior: The Crewcuts Collection
Imagine my surprise back in 2005/2006 to see J.Crew beautiful fashion styles for adults available for 2-10 year olds through their Crewcuts Collection. Over the past couple of years, the collection has grown from a few items, into offering several product lines that not only miniaturize the Mens\ Women's clothes but introduced some new styles of its own. Suddenly, I was becoming jealous that certain patterns and accessories were only available for "Girls" and not "Women." (I even contemplated buying the largest size available in Girls to wear it myself!)
J.Crew's foray into children's clothing appears to be quite successful considering it has its own dedicated website (crewcutkids.com). Not to mention, Crewcuts have their own stand alone stores (I believe it's 42) throughout the country. (I recently went to the one at the Westchester Mall and was in love with almost everything they offered- from the Domino-dot jacquard jacket (Item 94237) to the Flower headband (Item 93282).)
What are your feelings about Crewcuts? Do you love or hate the concept? Will you plan on buying any (for a child or even yourself!)? Do you think that the mini-versions of J.Crew is too much to spend on clothing (that kids will outgrow in a couple of months) or totally worth it (because the quality is great)?

Would you wear it? The Angler-print Tank Dress
Angler-print tank dress
(Item 93617)
Click here to visit product page
Regular: $135.00
Now: $89.99
Uh... really J.Crew? This is one of the best prints you could find for a $135 (now $90) dress?
Forgive me if you own this dress, but it looks awful. First, I do not think it is very flattering- both in terms of style and print. Even the model can not carry off the style of this dress without wearing a belt to make it more flattering. (By the way the model is super thin & gorgeous... imagine how the rest of us, who have a little bit of curves here and there, would look in this dress?!?).
As for the print, it looks a bit ridiculous unless (1) you are a six-year old girl [because let's face it, little girls make any print look cute because they are so cute to begin with] or (2) you are going to a fishing-themed party [which would explain why J.Crew used the term "Super-fun" in their description of this dress].
What do you think? Are you a fan of this dress & print? Do you own this dress and why? (Was it for a fishing-themed party?)

Seek & Find: J.Crew Item Search
A visitor (Anonymous at 9:57AM from the When is the next "20%" off sale? post) suggested a great idea: To create a new post for J.Crew Aficionadas to comment on particular items they are looking for and can't find online or in their local store with the hope that others (who do come across those items at their local stores) can respond with that exact location. Moreover, those shoppers who have come across some great bargains at their local store can share that information so those who are interested can call that store directly to order that item.
(Basically, this will be our own version of J.Crew's "store search" for products they offer. Especially since J.Crew doesn't offer this service for sale items.)
If this feature becomes popular enough, than I will find another site that does forums and incorporate it with this one.
So please start making product requests and listing bargains that you have come across! The more information you provide, in terms of the name\ item number\ color\ & size, the better. :)

Off on a tangent: Gap offers Free Shipping
Don't worry, I am still all about the Crew! But sometimes I get coupon codes that I think might be useful for some of you J.Crew Aficionadas. So, I plan on sharing those when I come across them like now...
For purchases at the Gap, Banana Republic, Piperlime, and Old Navy... Free (standard) shipping for any size purchase (J. Crew are you taking note!) with promo code 1CHECKOUT. This offer expires 5/31/08.
Also, it is worth noting that the Gap has increased their standard flat shipping fee to $7. (Grrr.)

Fabulous Finds (of the week!)
Here are a few fabulous items that are reduced in terms of price. Of course, there is a caveat: size and colors are limited... so you will have to act fast if you are interested in them!
New Dream striped classic crewneck sweater (Item 87128)
Click here to visit product page
Regular: $74.00
Select sizes now $29.99
This sweater is absolutely beautiful. I also think the Merino wool/ nylon/ cashmere combo makes this a more usable sweater.
Update: This item has sold out as of 5/27/08 at 4:07PM! (I should get commission from J.Crew.)
Washed favorite tank with shelf bra (Item 68135)
Click here to visit product page
Regular: $19.50
Select colors now $9.99
I love the fact J. Crew is offering tank tops that are long, including this particular style. To top it all off, this tank has a built in shelf bra for additional support. Love it!
Emily silk chiffon dress (Item 73893)
Click here to visit product page
Regular: $165.00
Now $49.99
I personally own this dress in black and I do like it! The only drawback is that there are no straps (or option to have straps). To make sure the top doesn't move from place (e.g. south), I tend to use fashion tape. Otherwise, it is a really lovely dress. Perfect for when you are attending a summer wedding!
Favorite-fit stretch vintage trouser cords (Item 86325)
Click here to visit product page
Regular: $79.50
Now $29.99
Great looking pair of pants that can be dressed up and dressed down (how many can really do that?!?) Besides a trouser leg, there is a bit of stretch in the material, which offers a really flattering fit that works well for most body types.
Do you have any Fabulous Finds at J.Crew? If yes, then please share them with us! If you can, try to include a product item number or link to the item. We love a great deal!

Memorial Day sale in J.Crew stores
Today, I went to one of my J.Crew's in the area and they are having an "additional 25% off sale items" sale. They had the Swiss-dot Fontana dress (Item 91241) for $59.99 plus an additional 25% off (and if you are a student, another 10% discount).
In addition to that sale, they had a rack with final final sale items. (Which means these final-priced items, with a red line on the tag, cannot be returned. Also, they don't apply student/educator's discount for final priced items.) I was able to get some really awesome deals here. For example, I got the Cashmere argyle ruffle cardigan in HONEY (Item 90566) for just $19.99 (Yes, less than $20 and in my size!) The original price was $188.00 and their website has it on sale now for $119.99.
So, chances are that the J.Crew near you is having a similar sale. I just wanted to share the following with you all in case you were thinking about stopping at a J.Crew this weekend...

Would you wear it? The Printed Strapless Embossed Beach Dress
Printed strapless embossed beach dress
Color shown in picture: pinecone
(Item 94092)
Click here to visit product page
Regular: $118.00
Now: $69.99
Let me start off by saying that the dress in the navy color (navy with white polka dots) is quite nice. I also like the shape of the dress (I actually own both the solid black and solid white versions).
However, I am having a hard time liking the dress in the pinecone color. It seems too busy for me and a bit weird (in terms of fabric pattern). It almost looks like a snake skin design instead of "pine cones" (I am still not sure how they picked "pinecone" as the color name). Maybe (and I do mean maybe) the dress would work with a white cardigan (to minimize the impact from the dress pattern).
What do you think of the dress? Would you wear it? Do you own it?

Sun, Sea, Sand, and J.Crew!
Usually after Memorial Day Weekend, I start to think about the dreaded bathing suit season. That is right, I used the word "dreaded". It is always daunting to find something to wear on the beach that both accentuates my best features (my slender top frame) and minimizes my concerns (my hips & thighs).
That is why I appreciate J.Crew's swim line that allows me to mix and match tops and bottoms (which is perfect considering my pear shape). For the most part, I find the fabric to be of good quality (really lasting for several years). As for sizing... Although I am a typical "medium" for bottoms, I have found that sometimes the "large" fits better. When it comes to tops, I am normally an "extra small," but for swim wear I find that I am better off with a "small." I don't have any personal experience with the one-pieces unfortunately. (One-pieces never work for me because I am pear shaped).
I love even more the line of cover-ups like the dresses that allow me to look cute while appropriate on the shore. A great example is the Embroidered-pinwheel smocked dress (Item 93494, on sale from $118 to just $39.99). They are very light and comfortable, while providing plenty of cover to hide any "concerns." It is also nice enough to wear as a regular dress or even skirt!
What are your impressions of J.Crew swim wear line? Do you have any advice as far as fitting & sizing is concerned (especially for one-peices)? Do you have any items that you are currently lusting over?

When is the next "20% off" sale?
I have wanted to purchase a couple of items (e.g. jackets) for awhile now. However, I have been hesitating due to the fear that another "Extra 20% off" sale will happen soon (that and the lack of a good free shipping code).
Seeing how this is Memorial Day Weekend, do you think J.Crew will have another "Extra 20% off" anytime soon?

Yey! New arrivals are here!
As Jagjag2 and another visitor commented in another post, J. Crew's New Arrivals are here. I am taking Jagjag2's suggestion of creating its own post. So please feel free to discuss what items you are most looking forward to purchasing and which ones you are not going to. :)
Right now, I am loving the Lucienne gown (click here) despite its price tag (that prohibits me from ever really entertaining the thought of purchasing it). I also really like the Soleil d'Or jacket (click here), so much that I don't even mind that it is in Metallic Gold!
I see they have brought back more expensive (but beautiful) luggage pieces. Seriously, who is purchasing those? I mean, if I am spending $2,000 on a piece of luggage (which I would never) then LV better be stamped all over it.
Of course, the best part about new arrivals is not just looking forward to what new and wonderful items J.Crew will be offering, but it is also that their sale section is going to be juicy in a couple of weeks. :)

Madewell is coming online (finally)!
I just got an email from Madewell for free shipping on their 1937 denim jeans (the offer is for orders over the phone and expires on 5/30/2008). As of right now, you can only purchase their items over the phone or in-store.
That wasn't the exciting part. The exciting part was what was beneath the denim offer:
That is right! Your eyes do not deceive you. Madewell is finally going to sell its merchandise online!!! Although I still plan on visiting the store in SoHo this month, it will be nice to have another online site (that just happens to be J.Crew-owned) to browse and shop at. (However, J.Crew will forever stay my No.1 fav retail stop!)
If you want to sign up for their announcements and promos, the link is: http://www.madewell1937.com/SP07/signup.html
Is it sad that I am excited about this news? Are you guys looking forward to Madewell Online like me?

Refined canvas Fiona jacket
(Item 90977)

Regular: $168.00
Now: $99.99
Yesterday's "Love it or Leave it" post received lots of comments (a big "thank you!" to all those who participated in the conversation!) I decided to bring the concept back, but this time for the Refined canvas Fiona jacket.
This jacket is another item that I have been lusting over for some time. I have noticed it in J.Crew's Sale section online and keep wondering if I should get it or not. I have been hesitant about purchasing it because of its shape- I am worried that it may not be a flattering style. I have gone to several J.Crew stores to try this on in-person. Unfortunately, the smallest size I could find is a size 4 which doesn't work for my size 2/0 frame on top. (It looked like I was swimming in extra fabric.) Unlike the Gayle Trench, the Fiona jacket has (1) ruffles that appear to be more tamed (although I do like ruffles!) and (2) buttons so it can be worn open and buttoned up (unlike the Gayle Trench, where you can only wear it wrapped).
What are your views on the jacket? Have you tried it on or own it? Do you think the jacket is worth the sale price?

Ask & Answer: J.Crew Suiting
In one of yesterday's post, there was a great conversation concerning J.Crew suiting. I thought that it probably deserves its own post. So please feel free to ask any questions if you have any about J.Crew's line of suits- from their Super 120's to Italian Wool collection. For those with personal experience, please feel free to answer those questions- it is great to hear the views from several people in order to get a better perspective on the issue.
I personally own three suits from J.Crew (2 black and 1 charcoal). These are the only suits I use because the material, structure, and fabric are fantastic (I just don't want to wear anything else!) I find the style and cut of my suits to be timeless and well worth the investment (after all, J.Crew suits are not exactly cheap!)
I have found that the suit jackets tend to run large (that or I like a more fitted look on top). Therefore, I end up buying a size smaller (I am size 2 usually, but for suit jackets I am a 0). Both my black suit jackets (Super 120's & Stretch Wool Elliot) are one button. I think it looks better over a two- or three- button jacket (but that is just my preference again).
I have found that I am true to size when it comes to pants. I do tend to favor the wideleg in suit pants- the material drapes much nicer and has a more professional look (in my opinion).
Also, one suggestion if you are thinking about buying a suit from J.Crew: buy the jacket, pants, and skirt. The skirt is usually an afterthought but a really great piece to have in your wardrobe. You end up getting more usage from the suit jacket by having it paired with both the pants and skirt (it is like having two suits!)
So what do you think of J.Crew Suiting? Is it worth the price? Do you own any pieces? What are your experiences with their suits? Do you prefer one-, two-, or three-button suit jackets and why? Do you have any questions about the suiting collection?

Darlings, is it time for a J.Crew coupon code?
Just got another email from J.Crew! This time they are offering 20% off orders of $175+ with code is SALESHHH. The offer expires 5/26/08. (Note: this offer does not include free shipping. So any savings from the 20% off really just gets cancels out by the cost of shipping.)

Gayle Ruffle Trench
(Item 90815)
Click here to visit product page
Regular: $198.00
Now: $139.99
I have been lusting over this jacket for some time now. I think the ruffles around the collar are absolutely beautiful! I also think both colors (bright flame and dune) would make nice additions to my ridiculously large coat collection. :)
However, I have not seen the trench in person. Hence my hesitation to purchase the coat right now. Unfortunately, I can not tell how the fabric would wear (e.g. is it structured and will maintain its shape, is it prone to wrinkles, etc.)
So, I will ask you guys what you think of the trench: do you love it or hate it? Do you own the trench and if so, what do you think? Is it worth the current price?

J. Crew Sizing: Do you have it down?
One of the topics that a commenter wanted to discuss on this blog relates to J.Crew sizes. I am fortunate enough to know (after all these years) which size I am, depending on the clothing item (top versus bottom, shirt versus dress). Which makes ordering online a lot easier for me.
I have come across a few personal observations, which I have listed below. These are just my opinions when it comes to sizes and should not be taken for actual measurement specifications! Obviously, if you are unsure about sizing, you should try on the clothes to see how they actually fit.
P.S. If you were curious about the item in the picture, that is J. Crew's Jelly Ballet Flats (Item 91531). I actually own the black pair. They are very nice to wear when its raining, but have absolutely no support for your feet (I mean none!) I ended up having to purchase an insole to make these shoes comfortable to walk in.
I have come across a few personal observations, which I have listed below. These are just my opinions when it comes to sizes and should not be taken for actual measurement specifications! Obviously, if you are unsure about sizing, you should try on the clothes to see how they actually fit.
- SHOES: The flats tend to run true to size. However, sandals, peep toe shoes, and wedges run 1/2 size too big.
- TOPS: The t-shirts tend to run true to American measurements. [Which basically means that American size charts are "bigger" than its European or Asian counterparts. If you don't understand what I mean, then I refer to H&M clothes. Haven't you ever notice that if you are a "extra small" with J. Crew (which is a 0-2 in size), you are a "small" with H&M (which is a 4-6 in size).]
However, when it comes to button down work shirts and blouses, the shirts run a 1/2 to a whole size bigger. (For example, I am a size 2 in tops, but I order a size 0 when it comes to button down shirts.) - PANTS: Again, these run true to American size for the most part. (I have found it is similar to GAP's sizing.) However, when ordering matchstick jeans or capris (in other words, tight/ fitted pants), then order a size up (as they tend to run a bit small).
- DRESSES: For the most part, the size chart is true to their sizing. However, once in awhile I will notice that some dresses run either too big or too small. I blame those hiccups in sizing on the different manufacturer of clothes that J. Crew relies on.
- JACKETS & OUTTERWEAR: My mother use to tell me to order a size up when it comes to jackets. This is not true when it comes to J.Crew. Whatever size top you normally are (again, for me it is a size 2), then that is most likely the size you should get for your jacket.

Summer Sale going on now!
J.Crew just sent me an email to remind me that they are having their Summer Sale. Funny, the items for sale look eerily similar to those they had in their Spring Sale just yesterday! :)
I won't lie, I can't wait until they have their 20-30% off sale again. I always look forward to those.

Would you wear it? The Pippa Calf-Hair Jacket
Pippa Calf-hair Jacket
(Item 86099)
Click here to visit product page
Regular: $1,800.00
Now: $1,299.99
If I ignore the cost of the jacket for a moment (although at that price, how can anyone), I still don't "know" about the jacket. There is something about it that doesn't seem appealing to me, but I just can't figure it out. It is certainly not the shape, (as J.Crew puts it "a straight, cropped body with shorter, banded sleeves shaped with tucks for volume"), that I don't like.
I think that my dislike of the jacket might have something to do with the calf-hair as the material base. I just don't think it would be very comfortable to move around in and wear. (Even though I have no problems in the past purchasing calf-hair items from J.Crew, such as the Spotted Cat flats and purse that I already own. But maybe because those were accessories, I viewed them differently.)
What do you think about this jacket? Would you buy it? Do you like the fact that it is calf-hair? Do you not care because the price is so outrageously expensive anyways?

Does your dog wear J. Crew too?
The pet industry is booming. If you don't believe me, then stop at any Target or Wal-Mart. You will notice that the pet section is no longer contained in one aisle, but consumes as many as seven aisles! Besides offering the regular supplies like pet food and shampoo, there are designer carriers, sweaters, and toys all available to pet owners who love to pamper their four-legged family members! If you still don't believe me, then believe the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association who estimates that in 2008 alone, $43.4 billion (that is right, billion) will be spent on our beloved pets.
So it's no surprise that there is also a trend for consumers to buy not only better dog food, but better quality leads, leashes, and even pet clothes. J.Crew has tried to capitalize on this trend by offering Crewmutts, a line exclusively tailored towards dogs. Crewmutts was first introduced during the holiday season a couple of years ago. (Which was similar to Banana Republic and Gap, who also offered dog accessories around Christmas time). However, J.Crew has recently decided to make Crewcutts a regular staple and even offers a permanent link to the collection on their website.
Crewmutts leashes, leads, beds, and clothing have the same great patterns, fabrics, and construction that are used in J.Crew's regular (human) accessories, (which make it very appealing to loyal J.Crew customers.) Of course, the price tag for these items are just as expensive as their human counterparts. For instance, the dog rain slicker (Item 98066) pictured here costs $98!
So what do you think of the Crewmutt line? Would you buy it for your pet? Do you think it is too expensive, or totally worth it?

Madewell's: J.Crew's Sister Store
J. Crew opened a few stores under the brand name of Madewell (LA, Dallas, NYC). (If you are curious, check out their website: http://www.madewell1937.com). Although some of the clothes appear to be similar to J. Crew's own clothing line, they are a lot more simple (read as less preppy and less fashion forward). Madewell's seems to embrace the bohemian style.
The reps for the store claim that Madewell's merchandise are priced at 20-30% less than J. Crew. The price tag for Madewell's range from $13 (for tanks) to a couple of hundred dollars for dresses and boots. Moreover, jeans (a staple in anyone's closet) can range from $70 to $120. (Personally, those prices don't look like they are that "less" than J. Crew's!)
So what are your feelings about Madewell's? Have you purchased any items from them? Is the quality just as good as J.Crew? (Or is it like an Old Navy to the Gap- where the quality is noticeably different?)

Do you see J. Crew every where too?
When you walk down the street, do you ever stop to look at someone's outfit and say, "oh, that piece came from J. Crew"? Or look through a magazine and see an item that you know (before reading the small text on the bottom) came from J. Crew? I know I do. I can not help but see J. Crew everywhere!
So yesterday, Ellen DeGeneres announced that she was going to marry her longtime girlfriend, actress Portia de Rossi (who I loved on the t.v. show Arrested Development) after the California Supreme Court ruled down the state’s ban on gay marriage.
While I am happy for Ellen and Portia, all I could think about is that I have seen Ellen's jacket before. In fact, I think I own it! So I went into my closet and found my Double-faced wool Lexington jacket (Item 85798). If it's not the same jacket as Ellen's, then it is very similar.
Do you also know when people are wearing J. Crew? Can you spot a J. Crew item out from the crowd?

J. Crew Jewelry
I buckled down and purchased the Cabochon Bouquet Cocktail Ring (Item 92716), when I saw it was on sale from its original price of $65 to $19.99 (plus the 20% off for the sale, plus the cruel shipping fee) at J.Crew the other day. It really is a beautiful ring that I see myself wearing while at a summer party (although it is quite large).
This got me thinking that J. Crew has come out with some really beautiful jewelry pieces over the past few years (besides the standard pearls and solid-color bangles). For instance, check out the Jeweled beehive pendant (Item 90138) which I personally own and love (I wear it all the time!) or the Enameled magnolia cuff bracelet (Item 92709, $150).
Although J.Crew's jewelry is beautiful, it also tends to have quite the price tag (read as expensive) for "partial gold-plated brass" (as oppose to the more valuable gold or silver). It makes wonder if these pieces are meant to last beyond a few years.
What are your experiences with J.Crew jewelry? Have you been disappointed or satisfied with the quality of the jewelry?

J.Crew Fit: Which is your fave?
J.Crew offers lots of pant styles: City, Wide, Favorite, and Original-fit. For denim there are: Matchstick, Trouser, Bootcut, Hip-slung, and Boy-fit.
Although I own several pairs of J.Crew pants and denim jeans, I have stuck to the same styles: city-fit, wide-leg, and trouser cut. I find these styles look best (e.g. the most flattering) on my 5'8" pear shaped frame. Whenever I try to stray, it ends up with a return of the product. I don't even dare try on the matchstick jeans in fear of the outcome (which would probably be a reminder that I am not as thin as Kiera Knightly!)

Another one bites the dust!
Another coupon site based on user submissions was told to remove their coupons by J. Crew! It is Best Deal: Dealigg (http://www.dealigg.com/story-JCrew-coupons-J-Crew-coupon-code).
What I found on the page is what I have been seeing more and more of, "Sorry, JCrew has specifically requested to have all JCrew coupons removed from Dealigg.com".
When will J.Crew realize that this will hurt, not improve, their sales!

J. Crew's Cashmere: Is it for me?
I have come across a few comments here and there (in different posts) about the quality of J. Crew's cashmere. I personally do not own any 100% cashmere sweaters (only partial cashmere). So my knowledge is limited. (As I mentioned in a previous comment from a post: Although I would love something from their cashmere line, I find it a bit too expensive for me right now.)
However, I would like to open up "the floor" to all of you in a single, easy to find post...
So, for those who have questions about J. Crew cashmere please feel free to ask here. For all those who have first hand experience with J. Crew cashmere, please help answer these questions. We can all benefit from our collective knowledge!!!

Shipping Rates: Too much!
Well, it is clear from the comments posted and the results of the poll (so far): we want coupons for free shipping on unlimited amounts back! Many of us have curbed our shopping with J. Crew because we were turned off by the shipping fees (myself included). Hopefully, the executives at J. Crew realize (and soon!) this is something important enough to reconsider.
Personally, I am so frustrated with their shipping rates (which are quite high for retail) that I am planning to write an email to J. Crew. I am suggesting that they either (1) bring back those unlimited amount coupons; (2) consider free shipping coupons with lesser amounts like $50 or $75 than the usual $100-175; or (3) consider a flat shipping fee (just like Gap and Nordstrom, who offer rates of $5 to $6 no matter what size the order).
Do you agree with the suggestions above? What are some of your suggestions?

Questionable Item of the Week: Colorblocked Mia dress
Let me start out by saying, that in general I love J. Crew and almost everything they produce. Over the past five years alone, I have noticed the retail store take their women's line clothing "up a notch" in terms of style, fabrics, and design. I especially love the attention to detail when it comes to their jackets (like the use of color and the inclusion of ribbon/piping in the inner-lining!)
Once in awhile though, I will run across a product that makes me question how it became a part of J. Crew's overall collection...
So recently I received J. Crew's Dress Book mini-catalog (literally it is smaller in size, with better stock paper, and showcasing a few select items) which featured the Colorblock Mia dress (Item 93612). To steal a quote from the description of the item, "A true shift, created in the spirit of the 1960s with split-neck detailing and a straight silhouette that just skims the body and works well on everyone." Uh... everyone really? Really?
This dress looks awful even on the model who is gorgeous and without an ounce of fat anywhere. (I don't think the model pictured here likes wearing the dress either!) Could you imagine what my pear-shaped body would look like in a shift dress like that? I can tell you: not good. Not good at all. It pains me to say this, but it looks like a glorified potato sack. Really, it kind of does. What is even more outrageous is the price of the dress at $158! For a cotton dress (that doesn't look too complicated), the price should be a lot less (maybe $50, maybe).
What do you think? Do you think I am being overly critical about this dress? Do you own this dress? If you do, please let me know what you think!

Product Review: Liv metallic ballet flats
One of the "regular" features I would like to include in this blog is reviewing products. I plan on taking popular items J. Crew is offering and open the discussion for those who have purchased the items to those who are thinking about buying the items. So please let me know what you think of this feature and if I should continue. Also, please let me know if you have any future "product review" suggestions.

I think the majority of J. Crew ballet flats are super cute. I have about 20 ballet flats from J. Crew alone! I even own multiples of the same shoe (same style shoe but in different colors.)
So it's no surprise that I bought these pair of shoes because I thought they looked cute too. I was quite surprised to see that the Liv Metallic Ballet Flats has an extra bit of cushion (when compared to previous ballet flats offered by the Crew). The extra bit of cushion is by no means the same support you would get from a casual sneaker, but enough for me to be happy with. They are easy to clean (e.g. wiping off dirt) and resist water much better than the silk ballet flats (which seems obvious because of the type of material itself).
Much like the other J. Crew ballet flats, as long as you wear some sort of stockings (to reduce the friction & foot sweating) they are comfortable enough to walk around the whole day in. My only complaint (which again relates to all of their ballet flats) is the soles of the shoe which are very slippery. I always end up having to adhere a "safe step sole pad" (that non-skid rough, rubber-like pad) to the bottom of the shoes (which costs about $2 at any Wal-Mart).
One more thing... If you are like me, someone who likes to wear these ballet flats without stockings in the summer, then I suggest you also try Dr. Scholls For Her: Miracle Shield Anti-Friction Stick (click here for product link). From personal experience, it really does protect your feet by reducing friction. This product can also be easily found in stores like Target for a reasonable price (and well worth the investment in my opinion!)
What are your thoughts about the Liv Metallic Ballet Flats? What do you think about J. Crew's ballet flats in general?

Finally, the Spring Sale is here!
It's that wonderful time of the month that I always look forward to: when J. Crew offers 20% off its sale merchandise. (Is it sad, that I really do look forward to it? ...Especially since it makes up for the lack of a free shipping code for unlimited amounts.) The 20% discount lasts until 5/17/08. Not a lot of days, but certainly something!

The J. Crew Collection: Is it for you?
Have you noticed that in the past several years that J. Crew has been coming out with some uber-expensive luxury pieces that are part of the J.Crew Collection? The Collection includes high-end items like jackets, dresses, shoes, bags, and jewelry. It is clear that they are trying to compete with designer labels instead of their regular rivals like the Gap, Banana Republic, and Ann Taylor. (Although in all fairness, Banana Republic stepped up their game with the BR Monogram line.)
Not sure what I mean? Well, take for example the Snakeskin stacked heels for $358, or the Tortoise sequin jacket (shown here) for $3,000 (that's right, $3,000!!!)
The new line uses high-end fabrics that are sourced from the same suppliers of retailers Chanel and Vera Wang. Executives at J. Crew clearly believe there is a market for their Collection line. Millard Drexler, chairman and ceo of J. Crew Group, said, "As we looked at the market, we said we're going to keep stepping up quality, design and detailing and see if we meet with any kind of [price] resistance... Whenever we did this, customers kept buying and liking it more. They still are, and want more of the best. For us, it's a natural opportunity...The best costs too much." According to Catherine Curan of MSNBC (click here for article), J.Crew is even opening up their first J.Crew Collection store in Manhattan on Madison Avenue and 79th Street this summer.
I do like the new luxe line: there are some pieces with gorgeous patterns and fabrics, and the quality looks better too (although the J.Crew regular line is of great quality in my opinion too). However, the price tags does seem off-putting (especially since I typically buy regular J.Crew items "on sale"). Although I have purchased two items from their collection line (they were both on sale from the original $300 price tag down to $100 each), I doubt I would buy anything regular priced from the line.
What do you think about the luxe J.Crew Collection? For those prices, would you turn to the more established designer labels (like Marc Jacobs)? Do you think this line will alienate J. Crew's core customers?

J.Crew travels in style, but will you?
Have you seen J. Crew's recent product line addition: the luggage collection? Can we say "gorgeous" together? While you are gawking at the fine leather craftsmanship, take a closer look at the price tag. The cost for the pieces range from $1,200 to $2,000! <ouch> My wallet just retreated back into the purse, (which is also hiding from me in the closet.) I thought my Diane Von Furstenberg rolling suitcases (which I bought at T.J. Maxx by the way) was an expensive luggage purchase for me. It is nothing compared to these prices!
What do you think about J. Crew's luggage? Do you think it's worth the price tag? Does anyone own a luggage piece from this collection?

me, the Crew,... and you!
A big "thank you!" to all those visiting this blog and posting comments! I am always excited to see and hear from other J. Crew aficionados (or aficionadas in this case!)
This blog is meant to be an open conversation for all J.Crew shoppers and admirers. Hopefully it is a place you feel welcomed to discuss. (That is why I enabled "comment posters" to have the option to be "anonymous".)
What are some of the topics you want to discuss and see more of on this blog? ...besides codes of course! (Which I will update when I come across them. I even posted them on the top right hand column for easy, quick viewing access.)

Darlings, is it time for a J.Crew coupon code?
Yes, it is that wonderful time again. I just got an email from J.Crew offering free shipping on orders of $100+ with promo code SUMMERTIME. The offer expire 5/14/08. Unfortunately, it doesn't leave a lot of days to buy... but it is definitely something (and better than the $150+ / $175+ Codes). Speaking of a free shipping code for orders of $150+, try promo code 12FS18 (the offer expires 5/22/08, which is at least gives you more time to buy!)

J.Crew does "downward dog"?
I received an email from J.Crew announcing their new line of yoga wear. At first, I was confused... Yoga and J. Crew are not synonymous in my J.Crew retail textbook. I know J. Crew has lounge wear (and it's pretty good too!), but not sportswear (which I associate with the Nike's and Reebok's of the world.) By the looks of it, the collection is limited to a few items which closely resembles their lounge wear items. (I guess J. Crew is testing out the water before they dive in.)
So what do you think about this new collection? Do you think it was a good product-extension for J. Crew? Have you purchased any items in the collection already? Let us know what you think!

Fabulous Finds (of the week!)
Every week I plan to list a few fabulous items that are (drastically) reduced in terms of price. Of course, there is a caveat: size and colors are limited... so you will have to act fast!
York leather driving mocs (Item 85512)
Click here to visit product page
Regular: $128.00
Select colors now $39.99 - $59.99
I personally own these in both brown and black. They are ridiculously comfortable and stylish too! They look great with jeans or with shorts. These are also the perfect shoes to wear on an airplane ride to some fabulous destination for holiday...
Betsey printed calf-hair wedges (Item 86222)
Click here to visit product page
Regular: $275.00
Select colors now $69.99 - $129.99
I don't own these shoes. But, I totally would in a heartbeat if I didn't look like a giraffe on skates when walking around in 3 1/4" heels. However, I do own the "spotted cat" ballet flats, Collection purse, and headband. What can I say, I just love the design!
Cambridge cable turtleneck sweater (Item 86480)
Click here to visit product page
Regular: $78.00
Now $29.99
I know it's Spring, but the weather is not 100% warm yet. There are still a lot of miserably cold days left. So why not get this little turtleneck as a "just in case it's a bit cold outside" for your wardrobe?
Silk taffeta doll dress (Item 86647)
Click here to visit product page
Regular: $250.00
Now $99.99
This gorgeous dress looks fabulous on all body types. (How many dresses can do that!) It is great for hiding tummies, hips, and other problem areas. Did I point out it has straps too! This is the perfect dress for special occasions where you want to actually eat food without having it show up immediately on your body!
Do you have any "Fabulous Finds" at J.Crew? If yes, then please share them with us! If you can, try to include a product item number or link to the item. We love a great deal!

Coupon sites: you are on notice!
Coupon websites that are based on user submissions like Retail Me Not and Deal Locker, no longer list J. Crew coupon codes. <GASP> I know, I am heartbroken too. (No. Seriously. I am.)
I noticed this alarming trend a few weeks ago. Imagine my surprise to see "this merchant has specifically requested to have all user contributed coupons removed" instead of the usual codes for free shipping over $X amount.
I was (read as "still am") really upset about this. I mean, most of my purchases online were based on a coupon code being used. (It somehow helped me justify the cost as being a "deal". After all, J. Crew shipping costs are some of the highest in the retail industry.) By the looks of the poll on this blog about this very topic, it looks like most of you feel the same way I do!
I tried to understand (make some sense) why J. Crew was eliminating the user submission coupon codes. What I came up with is that those coupons were intended for a target segment of their customers and J. Crew must have thought some non-targeted customers were taking advantage of those coupons. (It was probably customers like me. I would buy up to three times a day in separate orders because I had a free shipping code for an unlimited amount.)
But then, it got me thinking some more... if those coupons are not intended for everyone, then why do the emails (with the coupon offer) have written on the bottom: "If you received this email from a friend and would like to subscribe to our email list, click here"? That means J.Crew is aware and accepts that codes will be shared. Seems like the message of sharing (taking down user submitted websites but allowing the emailing of "friends") is a bit conflicted, no?
Lastly, I have (sadly) found that I have restrained from purchasing multiple items several times this past week alone because I did not have a coupon code to use! The items would have come to a grand total of a measly $150. However, considering it was during a four day span it is still quite a bit of change. (Of course the items were all sale items. So keeping them "on hold" in my cart until they hit the $150 free shipping threshold is nearly impossible- you know how J. Crew sale items goes fast!)
So what do you all think about the elimination of user submitted coupon sites for J.Crew? Have you been purchasing less as a result? Have you been turning to alternative coupon sites (if you could find any)? Do you think this is the right move for J.Crew? What do you think J. Crew should do?

Tips on having a great J.Crew shopping day!
I have come across, through my many years of purchasing at J.Crew, that there are a few tips that all J.Crew (devoted) shoppers should know about!
- First and foremost: J.Crew's customer service is one of the best in the business. So never hesitate to give them a call (800-562-0258) about any issues you might be having. (I have their phone number stored on my cell-phone for easy dialing access!)
- If you are a student, show your student ID and J.Crew will give you a student discount of 15% in their stores. That discount applies to just regular items. (It use to apply to sale items too, but those days are over.)
- If you are a teacher, show them some form of proof and J.Crew will give you an educator's discount of 15%! (I just found out about this juicy tidbit this weekend!)
- Don't hesitate to return "final sales" items if the merchandise is defective. I ordered the beautiful Jeweled-buckle grosgrain belt in black (Item No. 90865) to find one of the jeweled pieces missing and the other one completely off. I called J.Crew immediately and they mailed me a new one.
- There is a red-phone in all stores that allows customers to place store & catalog orders for regular priced items. This is especially great for items not available in the stores since J.Crew provides free shipping. Alas, the free shipping offer via red phone offer does not apply to sale merchandise. (Again, I know this for sure because I tried). HOWEVER, your student and educators discounts do apply over the red phone (so do not forget to mention them when placing an order!)
- If you are looking for a regular priced item and it's out of stock online, call J.Crew and ask to perform a "store search". Essentially, J.Crew associates will check the stock of that item in all of their stores. When they find the product you want (both size & color), they will mail it to you. Sadly, this service is not applicable to sales items. (They use to offer it for sale items and it was great too! But J.Crew probably recognized it wasn't cost effective for them.)
- UPDATE: I completely forgot to include something about "waitlisted" items. If you are waitlisted for a particular item and that item goes on sale for a lesser amount (this includes the item being a part of the 20-30% off temporary sale section), make sure you call J.Crew for a price adjustment. They will always honor the lowest price before the item is shipped out. Unfortunately, they don't update the lowest price automatically- so you do have to keep track of prices. (I have called about price adjustments numerous times in the past and J.Crew has always been accommodating. It has saved me a bunch of money that I used towards other purchases too!)
- If you "sign up" your email for new arrivals and promotions (through the website,) J.Crew will email you a welcome offer that usually consists of a free shipping code. (Gotta love that!)
