"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Anyone else still waiting on their catalog? Its frustrating how they don't send out all catalogs at once.

A great cardholder perk would be to get your rewards card with the newest issue of the full catalog--early. While I think the mini style guides are a nice touch, I'd get much more excited to spend if I received the full catalog a week before non-cardholders, for example.

  2. I'm bummed to hear that the quality of the wool and construction of the double-serge pencil skirts is going down again. I know there have been quite a few reports of splitting seams on the cotton pencils... has anybody had this experience with the wool ones? If not, I bet it starts happening this fall! Ugh.

    1. I was bummed to read this too. I consistently bought a few of these each year. I ordered the retro jade/turquoise one last night, I have to compare for myself. I have some from the first issue and each subsequent year. The quality decline is blatantly obvious when you have them side by side. I'm curious to see this year's version and I'll definitely report back.

    3. If only they'd reissue the Fall 2008 version in new colors, I'd buy every one! The construction on that skirt was just excellent.

  3. I'm just hoping for a good promo or discount soon. I mean, if you're going to tease us with fall clothes in the middle of summer, you might as well get us to actually buy the stuff if you gave us a $$ reason to.

  4. I'm bummed that they definitely have an item in stock on the factory website, but keep telling me its sold out. It legitimately popped back in all sizes 2 days ago, and then off the website again.

I spend too much time during the day checking for it. :(

    1. Have you tried checking from a different computer/different browser? For some reason, even after I've cleared all cookies, some sale items don't show up for me when they are currently in stock on the site. I've gone to a different computer and there are multiples in different colors and sizes, but can't see any of them from my normal computer/browser. Not sure what the problem is, but it's driving me crazy. But checking on a different computer, if you can, might help.

    2. I live chatted with someone and they confirmed the item is in stock. I'll check on other browsers, but I did use two different computers. Such a weird thing.

  5. I washed my featherweight V neck sweater for the first time and it came out with a hole in it! Boo!

  6. I can't seem to reply to the comment above on the #2 pencils but here is my $.02.

I have purchased 2 or 3 of these each each year since 2008. Personally, I liked 2008 and 2009 the best as the fabric was really nice and they were made beautifully. I like the thick waistband and shorter length of the 2008 and the 2009 seaming detail is nice because it is different.

I ordered 3 colors in the most recent version. When comparing 2010, 2011 and 2012, I can't see much difference overall. I don't love the waistband of any of them as it rolls out and they look to be about the same as far as fit goes. My 2010s are a tiny bit larger/longer than the newer ones. Some colors are softer than others regardless of year. I even weighed the skirts on my kitchen scale and don't see much difference in the heft of the fabric.

They are still nice skirts, but I wish JC would bring back the construction of the earliest ones. In general, I think if you were happy overall with the product from the last year, these are worth trying.

    1. Thank you kitsmommy. I agree that the 2008/09 are the best. I don't really like the ribbon waistband but it's not a dealbreaker. If the fabric quality goes downhill and easily pills or they get itchy then I will stop buying. Oh yes, if the back seam comes undone I will make a formal complaint!

  7. Off topic, but I went to the opening of the F Street store in DC today, and had a blast. It is really beautiful, definitely in the vein of how all the new stores are being styled with the white walls and bleached wood floors. There was really cool art on the walls and there are two separate floors for shopping.

There is all women's clothing upstairs, with men's and women's accessories and shoes downstairs.

There were a lot of people there working, and I was very appreciative of the way they sweetly handled my children and me (I brought the baby and the three-year old). :)

I went ahead and bought just about $250 (had been saving up for the opening knowing I would go on its first day open) and was able to get a free gift. I don't know if the gift they gave me was the one that was supposed to be the original gift with purchase, but I was thrilled. Our family had recently broken BOTH of our umbrellas and the SA was all, "would you like an umbrella as your gift with purchase?" I was a bit gleeful, I admit, when I said yes.

For me, this store is the second closest to me after Pentagon City. It seems to carry a lot of suiting (of course, DC is a bit buttoned up), but there was also quite a bit of casual clothing, too, which suits my needs much better.

Anyhow, I hope this helps someone who is interested in going!

  8. I apologize if this has been mentioned previously, I just returned from vacation so I am quite out of the loop.

J.Crew is opening a Factory store in Vaughan Mills in Ontario Canada this fall.

Expanding to Hong Kong, China and a Factory store near Toronto yet still no J.Crew in Calgary.

  9. I would really wish that JC would start making dresses that aren't super short and aren't maxis. I am as tired of the extreme hemlines of the last couple seasons as I am of the super skinny jeans. I'm pretty slim (5'9", 111 lbs.) but this is just getting boring already!

    1. I agree. Glad I still have my older skirts and dresses.

  10. What is with the new tiny clothing tags? I am going blind trying to see the itty bitty sizes on them. I actually needed a magnifying glass to distinguish a size 6 from an 8. This does not fill me with confidence that the people sending out our merch will send the correct sizes.

  11. I noticed the Colorblock-Stripe Slash Henley only during the extra 40 percent off sale a couple of weeks ago. It was sold out in my size. I've been calling to see if any have been returned to a B&M, and today a CSR told me "I see we've already done some "we will find its" for you, and as this is a final sale item, we can't do it again." Wow. I didn't realize there was a finite number of times one could request a search. I'm just trying to buy an older item -- her tone was "get lost." I appreciate their policies, but it still was off-putting.
