Secret Sale for Facebook Friends of J.Crew

J.Crew is offering 25% off (no min!) with promotional code SECRET. This offer expires tomorrow night, midnight EST. The usual exclusions apply (no suiting, no third party items, etc.)

It's interesting to see this type of sale being offered over at J.Crew's FB page. Especially since they are offering the same promo on their website, just with a minimum dollar amount.

J.Crew's Shipping Method Change {upgrade or downgrade, you decide!}

"Thanks!" to many of you, including 312JCgirl & Silver Lining (in this post) who revealed some changes in J.Crew's shipping methods: J.Crew has included a new "economy" choice. The difference with standard is pretty significant, as shown below:

Economy (6-8 Business Days) Your order will ship UPS SurePost and will be delivered by USPS.

Standard (3-6 Business Days) Your order will ship UPS Ground.

Economy can take twice as long as standard to make it to the customer's residence. In part because economy is handed off from UPS to the USPS.

What is also interesting is if a customer meets the threshold for free shipping, they can choose between economy and standard. As long as they are aware of it before just clicking away. ;)

If you are below the threshold for free shipping, there is a new $5 flat shipping fee for economy. It will cost $8 for standard. Which is now a bit lower than the $8.95 they were charging before. (Hey, something is something!) :)

I am curious what made J.Crew decide to move in this direction with its shipping. I am aware that J.Crew Factory uses SurePost and a flat shipping fee of $4.95- was it just a matter of time to do the same at retail J.Crew?

I am personally not a big fan of SurePost, but I am a fan of lower-cost shipping. At least J.Crew provided more options for customers. That is a good thing.

Did you notice the extra shipping option? What are your thoughts? Is this an upgrade or downgrade?

J.Crew Updates Website with New Arrivals!

"Thanks!" to many of you, who let us know that J.Crew had an update to its website (click here to view online).

There are some new arrivals for men (click here) & women (click here). {wahoo!} It looks like Crewcuts (click here) has been updated, but not the J.Crew Collection (click here).

The OCTOBER catalog (click here to view) is now available to view. However, the latest NOVEMBER catalog is not. (Check your mailbox as it is being sent via snail mail to customers!)

J.Crew is also offering customers to take an additional 25% off SITEWIDE ($150+) with promo code SHOPNOW. Yey! This code expires October 30, 2013. J.Crew is also offering free shipping with every order (no min!). This offer is for today only, and is automatically applied at checkout.

Okay, so after taking a long look through the new arrivals I can say that I am not too excited. Yes, there are a few embellished sweatshirts that look cute. However, I own my fair share at this point. 

The issue is the categories I am normally super excited about this time of year (coats, blazers, skirts) are seriously lacking in my opinion. Skirts is such a skimpy category for Fall, so I am overlooking it for now. But blazers and coats? The only ones I am gravitating towards are the Collection pieces and those prices are too high. Where are the more reasonable Hacking Jackets?

Lastly, why are there so many items on the site that are for "pre-order"? Perhaps, J.Crew should be saving those items for the next roll out when they are actually available. Meh.

Sorry to be such a buzz kill about this roll-out. With all that said, I can't wait to see what the Holiday new arrivals bring from J.Crew. :)

I think it is great that this promotion is running both stores and online. Although I am curious if stores will still be offering an additional percent off their Sale merchandise. As of yesterday, it was 40% off Final Sale. Curious if it will stay the same, reduce to 20% off, or removed altogether.

J.Crew's November Catalog {thanks Ina Mack!}

A big "thanks!" to Ina Mack {of the lovely "ina in wonderland" blog} who shared most of the pages from the upcoming November catalog with us in her "Country Escape. Jcrew style guide November edition" post (click here). {yey!} All images in this post come from her post and there is more to be seen over at her blog!

This catalog has an old-J.Crew-catalog-circa-2005 feel to it. Frankly, I am loving that feel too!

 

I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of this catalog now!

Loving and Hating on J.Crew!

"Thanks!" to Cuckoo (in this post), who let us know about the following two J.Crew-centric posts over at the Gloss (click here).

The "29 Reasons To Avoid Spending Money On J.Crew’s New Fall ‘Style Guide" post (click here to read in its entirety) pretty much says it all. I especially found the "...catalog is filled with little Easter eggs of fashion disaster surprises" pretty funny. I have to agree with the author that the outfit featured in the top post is not pretty. The sweater, skirt, and hat are all lovely but not lovely together. The necklace... I don't even know where to begin with that one.

On the flip side, they also have a "Best Sales Now: 10 Perfect-For-Work Items From J.Crew Starting At $18" post (click here to read in its entirety). I am personally crushing on the Long Colorblock Field Jacket (item 02745; $198.00), which is on sale online for $179.99 (before 30% off with code FALLSALE) and in stores for $149.99 (before additional 40% off). GigiOfCa reviewed this jacket (in this post), and it looked amazing on her!

What I enjoy about these two posts is the range of emotions displayed for J.Crew... just like me! I love J.Crew, and I totally drink the crewlade. There are so many pieces I stalk to own. But man, oh man. Sometimes they put out a piece or style something that has me scratching my head. ;)

J.Crew Timex Watches {price drop!}

I am not sure when it happened, but both J.Crew's Timex Military Watch (Item 10884) and Timex Vintage Field Army Watch (item 27460) dropped in price from $150 to $98. I should add, they are not on sale. It looks like this is the new set point for price.

This is a pretty significant price drop that I was surprised to see. After all, J.Crew tends to increase prices, not reduce them. I immediately checked out the straps, like the Solid Watch Strap (Item 19474). They are still priced at $20, but I do remember when customers could buy two regular-priced straps and save.

This all got me wondering, why did J.Crew reduce the price on these watches? Especially since so many retailers were imitating the style. (Fossil offers a similar style. Target offers a similar Timex version for a lot, lot, lot less.)

Since J.Crew has a lot of Timex-watch competition out there, they probably decided to be a little more price-reasonable. (Although, let's face it, the watch is still expensively priced. This coming from a consumer who purchased the watch at $150.) Plus, it could create a loss-leader type situation. (Kind of like video game consoles, where the real money is made on the games and not the console.) Make the watch itself, cost a little less, and keep the regular price straps at a high price point. I mean, how can you buy this watch and not get an additional strap or two? ;)

Of course, this has got me hoping that J.Crew will reduce the starting price point for other pieces that are set a bit too high.

The good: (1) Happy to see another additional percent off sale at J.Crew (both online and in stores). (2) It looks like some new merchandise made it to sale. Yey!

The bad: (1) J.Crew offered 40% off sale not less than a week ago. Why the decrease to 30%? Especially since many items show up as Final Sale. (2) Most of the merchandise is the same old merchandise. If you wanted an item you would have already bought it by now. Frankly, I am so tired of the section that I rarely check for updates in the morning.

I am really loving the offerings over at Factory. Although I am surprised by how much Factory is knocking off the retail versions (from previous seasons). 

I remember maybe a handful of items reminding me of retail versions. However, it seems like almost every other piece from Factory is a derivative of retail.  On a bright note, at least customers get a second chance at owning those coveted pieces! :)
