I have been eying this cardigan for some time now. I just think it looks so beautiful in the image. However, I am curious about how it fits in real life, especially with the "casual-chic tie at the neck" which I can see being either fabulous or uber-annoying.

Luckily for us, Melissa (in this post) shared with us her review of this sweater:

Dream tie-neck cardigan: I was initially hesitant to order this sweater as I thought the tie would annoy me, but I ordered it anyway because I really wanted a sweater in light spearmint (I had returned 2 sweaters in this color already) and I saw a cute set with the sweater on Polyvore (may have been Slastena).

Fit is tts and is also a bit fitted as advertised, but not nearly as fitted as the Melanie cardigan. It does hit at hip.

Soft to the touch and I think it has a warm, wintery feeling to it.

The only other thing I want to mention is that the pocket ends are loosely attached inside by braided sweater fabric. This was not a turn off for me, just interesting.

Overall, I loved it so much that I also ordered the Joelle flats to match.

A big "thanks!" to Melissa (in this post) for her great review! :)

What are your thoughts on the Dream Tie-Neck Cardigan (do you like/dislike the style, design, fabric)? Are you considering or already have purchased this cardigan? If so, would you recommend this cardigan to another Aficionada? :)

  1. Thanks for this post Alexis. I've been eyeing the sweater too. At ~$50 from its original price, it's a great deal - so, I'm curious to see if anyone else shares their thoughts on this piece.

  2. I bought this sweater at full price early in the season and returned it after wearing it 3 times. It pilled terribly. A big disappointment. My time is valuable and I just don't have time to mess around with pilly/poor quality sweaters....

  3. My dream sweaters from last fall/winter all are almost ready to be thrown out they're so pilled. I'm not buying another dream sweater, regardless of how cute it may be. What lousy fabric.

  4. I'd been looking at this sweater for a while so when I could get it for $60, I jumped at it. I had high hopes for this sweater. When it arrived I tried in on with various different things and it just looked terrible. It seemed shrunken, which doesn't really happen to me a whole lot since I'm only 5'3". Also, I couldn't get the tie to look right. Sadly, it quickly went back. I'm interested to see how others feel about this cardigan since I had visions of this being my new go to office sweater.

  5. I for once happened to like it a lot. I own few of Dream yarn items and I am well aware of the pilling problem. As long as you don't mind and know how to de-pill it, it should give no problems.
I found this cardigan very soft and plush, wore it several times and so far noticed minimal pilling. It's very versatile and there are hundred diff. ways to tie that scarf. I agree that it might not be for everyone, but that's what so great about J crew- everyone can find something that suits them well.
I have posted real life pics and a review of it last week, for those who interested -it's on my blog.
Alexis, I hope you don't mind me mentioning it. If you would prefer me not- I'll remove this comment.:))

  6. i bought this too, in tangerine with the JINGLE promotion and i was not impressed one bit. the cardigan is very, very shrunken. the cardigan barely came to my waist. and it is not flattering at all if you have a larger chest. in theory it is an adorable cardigan, yet not flattering for all.

  7. How do people tie the tie? Just like the model or in other ways too? I could see myself not knowing what to do with the tie and then giving up. :)

  9. My dream sweaters from last year are long gone to trash heaven, what a waste of money! It wasn't only the pilling it was they wore after a few wearings.

  11. bkp mentioned it not being flattering for a large chest, maybe that's why I like it. . . I have a small chest. I bought it in tangelo and I love the color first of all, I find the tie slightly annoying but very chic. I received tons of complements the first day of wearing it. I really like it tied and over button downs, but it also looks nice untied. The only issue is the pilling as many of you have said, on the second day of wearing it too! what is this depilling Slastena? I know nothing about it

Slastena: feel free to mention your (great) blog anytime! :)

  13. Uggghh. Now I'm completely undecided about the sweater - don't know if I want to take a chance on a badly-pilling product just because of the deeply discounted price.

As an aside, I mentioned to an SA here in Pasadena, CA that there have been many complaints about their cashmere and other sweater fibers pilling. (In fact, I can't quite remember, but I think SHE may have even brought up the issue of their own sweater products pilling herself.) I do recall, however, that even though she acknowleged bad pilling, she said that the pilling is VERY bad early on in the wear, but will taper off after some time. She claimed that the pilling tools are helpful to remove the pilling until it dissipates.

(And, she has been working for JCrew, Pasadena for at least 3 years, so she has some history with different seasons of their sweater products.)

  15. The gigantic buttons remind me of raisins on a gingerbread man. Other than that, it's a pretty sweater. I hope it doesn't come in brown.

  16. O.K., I've been baking Christmas cookies all day. Can you tell?

  17. Where do you find/buy the pilling tools? I would like to try one.

    Thanks!

  18. JCrew sells one, but purportedly only for cashmere. Here is the description

    The ultimate cashmere care kit
    $15.00 item 83762

A thoughtful gift for the cashmere collector (or yourself)—with the right care, our cashmere can give you a lifetime of soft luxury. Includes a cashmere comb to remove natural pilling, a naturally aromatic cedar ball to repel moths, and an attractive cotton storage pouch that ties neatly closed. Import.

You may also try the Sweater Stone. Just google on terms "sweater stone." There is a branded one by the name of Woolrich's. They are about $5.00. Laundress, the company that does the private label cashmere care products for JCrew, also sells one.

Finally, there's the electric clothes shavers. They run about $15.00.
