I absolutely *love* glittens! (I didn't even know there was a proper term for this particular type of winter accessory- fingerless gloves that can be converted to mittens- until I saw these at J.Crew.) :) Although I own a few glittens, I don't own any from J.Crew and was curious about their version.

Luckily for us, Gracefully (in this post) shared with us her great review of these glittens:

Hello JCAs! The cortina glittens are no longer online so either they're sold out or it's more J.Crew website voodoo. But at any rate, if you bought a pair for someone, I got a pair at full price in black and recently tried them. I wanted to love everything about these and get them in many colors, but I'm really sorry to say I'm leaning towards a poor rating. I have shearling mittens from jcrew -- they're 10+ years old, heavily used and just beginning to wear out. Not so for these.

On the pro end, the glittens are incredibly cozy. My hands get cold very easily but these do keep me warm and the wool is very soft, not itchy at all. I love, love, love that. But they run rather big. I always wear women's large gloves and these are large even for me. The mitten cover bunches at the top.

But what I found I most disappointing is the quality. This is really poorly made. I'm surprised it's a J.Crew item at all. The buttons on the mittens came off within the first two hours of wearing, on the 3rd time that I unbuttoned the convertible part. Never mind, I'll sew them on I thought.

I've worn the gloves briefly 3 times after that. it's already pilling -- badly. and the seam on the left thumb is beginning to open so you can see the top of my thumb. Worse yet, I noticed tonight, the mitten cover is sewed onto the glove and it's beginning to separate!! So much for a glitten. Very shoddy. Very disappointing.

A big "thanks!" to Gracefully (in this post) for her great review! :)

What are your thoughts on the Cortina Glittens (do you like/dislike the style, design, material)? Are you considering or already have purchased these gloves? Moreover, what are your favorite J.Crew winter acessories (that you would recommend) and why? :)

  1. When I was at the BM yesterday, a customer was returning glittens with these exact complaints. She wanted a replacement pair in the same color but they weren't available. I have some glittens from forever 21 and they are much more tightly knit and not falling apart!

  2. I have cable-knit glittens from J.Crew from last year and I love them, but they do take a cue from J.Crew sweaters and pill quite a bit. I have a few other pairs I got from a fair-trade store that are warmer and hold up better so I usually save the J.Crew ones for days I need to look "dressy."

  3. That was my experience with the pair that I bought last winter too! It's a shame. I'll just stick to knitting my own.

I own the suede shearling gloves too and I love them, although I need to see about taking my orange pair to be cleaned. The suede on the palm side is starting to darken. Is that typical of colored suede? Can it be cleaned?

  4. I have a pair of black knit gloves that I bought from J.Crew last year that ripped at the thumb seam the first time I wore them. Very disappointing quality!

  5. The pair of ivory gloves I got from JCrew last winter were so poorly sewn. I should take a picture and send it to Alexis. They are just bizarrly made and defective; almost comical; how could they have passed any type of inspection.! I just never bothered to return them but I should have! I will never buy a pair of JCrew gloves again. I bought some from a discount store 2 winters ago and they are holding up very well!

  6. Thanks for the review Gracefully! I don't own any J.Crew glittens or gloves, and based on your review as well as the others who have posted about the poor quality...I don't plan to purchase any, either.

  7. Last Christmas, I got DH a pair of knit gloves with the leather palms, and while they looked really nice at the store, they have turned out to be such pieces of crap that I was embarrassed to have given them as a gift. The leather started to come unstitched immediately, and after one wear, it was almost detached from one of the gloves. I've sewn them up a bunch of times. I don't remember how much full price was on them - maybe $49.50? - I paid $15 and they weren't even worth that. Just wanted to warn JCA's, since I have seen them in stores this year.

That being said, I really like the Fair Isle Beret that I purchased last winter, along with last year's plaid sparkle scarf. This year's mohair scarves were cute, but I found the amount of "shedding" totally varied by color - the light spearmint one was fine for me, but the grey one shedded all over the place. However, my favorite winter accessory is the shearling earmuffs from 2 winters ago, in a black/red/green plaid with black shearling. They've held up great (still look new) and are warm and comfortable.

  8. The cashmere hat Light Spearmint color from this years collection is poorly made also. The seam is starting to open, and the hat is starting to pill. Too bad, JC has nice styles but crappy quality in some of their items.

  9. I have alredy returned two pairs for the same reason! 3 out of the 4 buttons fell off the first time I wore then before I even tried to unhook them! It really stinks because I bought a bunch of them to give out as gifts and now I just have to return them : ( Get it together JCrew1!!

  10. I have 2 pair. They are cute and I got them on sale so I'm not complaining too much. I haven't had any problems that the other JCA's are experiencing. I have a pair from a couple years ago where the thumb started to come unknit, but I wore those constantly.

  11. My kids wear these (not from JCrew). I think they're too childish for adult women (sorry!).

  12. I bought these glittens and was disappointed when a month after I started wearing them, the fold over mitten flap started to detach from the glove. I stopped by JCrew yesterday and let a sales rep know and she immediately said the glittens were returnable or eligible for exchange.

  13. This review and everyone's comments scare me! I already gave glittens and a scarf to our kid's babysitter!! They are from the factory store too so that probably means the quality is even worse. Darn! They looked so cute in the store...

  14. I'm glad this review was shared as I will be returning glittens this weekend to my B&M for pilling, button
loss...I always think that I am being overly picky and quality conscious BUT obviously NOT this time!

  15. Does anyone else have a huge problem with pilling with J.Crew cashmere sweaters? I've bought a few this year (due to the amazing sales), but it seems that they pill more than usual. my black cardigan looks awful! any advice/thoughts?

  16. Jenn:
I only have one piece of J.Crew Cashmere (the lili cardigan from last year) and it looks really terrible after only a few wears. I am not impressed with the cashmere at J.Crew and won't be buying any more. Several aficionadas seem to have this problem as well. I have dry cleaned it as per tag instructions but I will probably get a sweater shaver thing to get rid of the horrible pills; I just can't wear it as it is.
The merino cardigans that I have are fantastic, I love them!

  17. I own 7 pairs. I've never had a problem with them. They do pill, but I just use my sweater comb on them.

  18. But But . . . they look so nice . . .

  19. I also wanted to love these glittens from J.Crew, especially because I bought a pair earlier this fall fom another designer which were VERY spendy ($60). I hoped to find a less-expensive alternative. (Notice, I did not say cheaper.) Well, cheaper they were indeed! They are not very well-made, and I discovered that after simply trying them on when they arrived at my house. I ended up returning them immediately because they were just SO large (I wear a 6-6.6 glove, so I should have known better.) Even based on the three minutes I spent with them on I could tell the quality did not begin to compare glittens I already owned. Sorry J.Crew - this item is a loser.

On a brighter note, I did purchase a pair of fingerless ragg gloves at my local J.Crew outlet in charcoal grey. They are meant to be loose and floppy, and they are just that. They do little for warmth, as there is no mitten option, but they are more of a style statement than anything else. Plus, with the open thumb, I can actually text while wearing them!

  20. I want a sweater comb! I did a quick search and a brand called D-FUZZ-IT came up...is this good or does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks!

  21. I bought these for a friend...it was sitting in my drawer for almost three weeks, waiting for Christmas. This morning, I ripped the tags off and put them on. Haven't taken them off since. I love them!! Now I have to find a replacement present, quickly! :P

  22. I totally agree - they look great in the store but they start to pill quickly after wearing. Now they are my "everyday gloves" and I have nicer ones for nights out.
