Weekly Share: Other JCrew-like Retailers

Preface: A big "thanks!" to Amy who suggested a weekly "Other JCrew-like Retailers" post about current experiences with other non-J.Crew retailers. I think it is a brilliant idea and will try it out for a few weeks. Hopefully this will help out our fellow JCAs! :)

This is the weekly "Other JCrew-like Retailers" post (similar to the "Off On A Tangent" posts), where we can share our finds from other retailers that have offerings similar to J.Crew (like LE Canvas, Gap, BR, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and the like.)

If you have recently encountered items that are similar to J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including experiences with certain merchandise pieces, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. I think someone mentioned a deal on jackets at Eddie Bauer? I came across a code:

Use BHGDECBIC for 15% off + free shipping thru 12/24. Online clearance not included in offer.

The ad code is 4209. Not sure if the cashier will accept that or if you need to have the little postcard I saw in Better Homes & Garden.

  2. Madewell reviews for a few things:

    * Silky scoopneck tee in Heather Rose Quartz. Looks somewhat coral online; actually dusty pink. I got my normal J.Crew S.

Unfortunately the fit was wonky on this. Really tight sleeves but large, boxy body. Neckline was low and also had a raw edge.

On the plus side, fabric is a gorgeous knit silk, so soft and has a lovely sheen. Madewell has a lot of more casual silk items, which I like.

    * Cowlneck wool / poly dress - sorry I don't have the name on this. It was in the sale section but is currently sold out. It is cute but the thin fabric is transparent. Sleeves were also tight. :(

    Ann Taylor:

    * Cashmere v-neck in Frappe (camel). I wanted to love this. It fit well in my normal size S. The cashmere just didn't do it for me. It was itchier than last year's J.Crew (not terrible, but wouldn't want to wear it without long sleeves underneath).

Also, the cashmere just didn't feel as soft and plush as I wanted. It didn't have that kind of fluffiness that J.Crew cashmere has. Maybe that's due to AT's method of twisting the yarns so they supposedly don't pill. Anyway, it was just kind of lackluster to me.

  4. Long-time J.Crew shoppers may get a kick out of this - see if you can guess if it's Banana Republic, Gap or J. Crew?

  5. Brooks Brothers is running 7 Days of Savings from Monday to Sunday this week. Today's daily deal is 40% off shoes, belts and leather accessories, which includes handbags.

Brooks Brothers products are excellent quality and 40% off is almost as good as it gets. Sometimes items will find their way to clearance and eventually be reduced further than 40% off, but that is rare. I will be hitting the BB B&M before lunch this morning. I have two handbags I want to pick up.

  6. Not to be a thread hog, although there's no reason why today should be any different :P, but I wanted to mention that Brooks Brothers has Aigle boots included in the 40% sale.

They also have foldable suede ballet flats with leather soles that come with a nylon carrying case. These are super comfortable and really convenient to pack in your bag since they fold in half. Only $40.80 on sale today, a great deal.

  7. To piggyback on Fabulous Florida Mommy's LEC comment, I just recently bought and reviewed their Pleated Tartan shirtdress. It was a pass for me, but is still a really cute dress that may work for others. Check out the review and picshere.

  8. Sarah,

Thanks for the Madewell tee review. I was wondering about that piece.

My B&M Ann Taylor store finally received some of the cashmere v-necks and I noticed a lot of difference in the texture of the cashmere depending on color. The bright blue and grey were really thick and pretty, but the red was thinner and flatter.

I ordered one of the cashmere cardigans in red and it is very thick and rich and is totally different than the v-neck in the same shade. I wore it for several days while on vacation and no pills in sight. The buttons are kind of meh, so I might change them to some pretty glass ones I have.

I bought three of the AT 3/4 sleeve cashmere cardis earlier in the fall and they have worn amazingly. Very plush and thick...they are as nice as some vintage pieces I have.

I really have had very favorable experiences with AT cashmere, but it can be a little hit or miss based on the individual piece.

  11. Ann Taylor Loft:

40% off your order (I think includes sale stuff, but says it excludes select new arrivals) and free shipping (no minimum) with the code HOLIDAY.

Just says it's a limited time only and good online and in stores.

I got the J Crew cardholder discount so I shouldn't complain, but why can't we ever get a 40% off and free ship (no min)? J. Crew is such a grinch!

  12. I just received my Talbots Black Watch tartan pleated taffeta party skirt. I think it is going back. I thought it was going to be a fabulous mix of preppie, grownup, sexy, and playful but it looks pretty schoolgirlish to me. Also, even though 4P fits me fine in their jeans, the 4P skirt was huge. The DH likes it though--if he likes it so much maybe he should buy it for me and I'll spend my own $ on something else.

One more thing (I shouldn't complain but I will): at 25% off and free shipping this was a great deal. But, the shipping process took several days longer than I would have expected due to the FedEx/USPS combo (item ships FedEx to post office then is delivered by USPS). And, it was package in an envelope, not a box. It arrived in fine shape, so no harm, no foul, but for a silk skirt I would have expected a box.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hexicon,

I have loved many of Talbot's offerings this fall, but I honestly felt all those taffeta skirts looked cheap in person. They looked so pretty online, but didn't work out for me either.

I bought the cotton silk bow skirt and had to go down 2 sizes from the size I bought in the double faced wool skirt and it is still loose, so I think the full skirts must run really big.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hexicon,

Having ordered from Talbots that is they way they send most items: FedEX Smartpost which is then finally delivered by USPS. It does take a while to get my orders but most of the time shipping is free so I guess I cannot complain too much!

I agree though with their packaging methods which is usually a gray plastic bag. My mail lady stuffs it inside my mailbox and I have to run out and get it before my items are a rumpled mess!

I have received purses in boxes from Talbots and shoes but soft items come in mailers. Such a shame really!

In store I bought the tartan blazer with the little velvet collar. I really love it! Had a 40% off one item coupon good for last Wed. and I have another one good for today only. I think I will stay home though:)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hexicon: I can't stand when retailers use a combo of ups/fedex and usps! Anthropologie does this as well. Because I live way up on top of a mountain, it takes forever for packages to get to me this way.

  16. Ok so awhile back conner and ajc posted about coach wedges that are similar to the mcalister wedges at jc. Has anyone tried these or know how coach shoes fit? I usually wear a 8 in jc flats but a 7.5 in many other brands. Any help is appreciated!! Thanks!

  18. Barbabelle, thank you for the laugh. That 1994 J.Crew ad is just too much. Check out that belt buckle!

  19. Another rave for the Talbots tartan blazer with the velvet top. This is labelled the "Kate" or curvy cut. I have worn Tal's blazers for years as they have always been the best fit on me (in petite). I am short waisted, hourglass and I have a big bust. This jacket is so flattering on. It has a little flutter in the back at the waist that is sublte but adds femininity to a masuline pattern. I love that the plaid is subtle. I wore it for business with black work pants and a black long sleeved tee (and a cluster pearl necklace) but the website has it styled belted with distressed jeans and that would be cute too. Great quality. I got it on the 40% off blazer day (for a meeting that I ended up wearing something else, but kept the blazer anyway).

  20. Hello all,

I have a one time use 25% off code for coach.com, good through 12/12. They don't have anything I want right now, so would like to pass it along to another JCA. Just promise you will not use it to purchase any of their items with fur. :)

First person to email me at femme55@hotmail.com gets it. Jcrewlove perhaps you want it to buy the wedges?

    ReplyDelete
  21. @JCrewlove, the Coach Cassy wedges were similar to the McAlister wedges. Macy's has them on sale now for $133; see
    http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=505345&CategoryID=41816.

I usually wear size 7 shoes, but the Coach ran a tad big and the sole was made of a hard rubber material that was noticeably heavier than JCrew's crepe sole. Also, the Coach Cassy's heel (excluding platform) was a 2 1/2-inches vs. McAlister's 2 inches. That 1/2 inch made all the difference in comfort for me, so I returned it.

However, I found an even better substitute for the desert booties; they're made by an Italian brand Amalfi and the shoe style is called Malia. They come in a sand-colored sumptuous suede that is uber-comfortable, are identical to McAlisters except that the inside is lined (vs. JC's unlined, raw suede) and there are 5 eyelet holes vs. 2 in JCrew version, so you can get a better fit. Totally worth the $198 full price.

I saw mine in a Rangoni shoe catalog, but you can google Rangoni shoes & call the store nearest you to order a pair; there's free ship & 10% discount avail right now.

Hope that helps, I abolutely adore mine and wear them constantly. (BTW, when you search "Amalfi Malia booties" you'll get only the leather version, but it does come in suede.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ooh, McAlister desert wedge lookalike -- Coach Cassy wedges on sale at coach.com for $89! If you like this style, I'd grab it!

(Though I still prefer my Amalfi version)

  23. Ann Taylor: Purchased their graphic print scarf during their recent promo and it's so nice...the wool is very soft and not scratchy at all. It's a great basic to jazz up my black sweaters and coats.

Hexicon and others who know of vendors who use the FedEx/USPS combo...be careful. I had a huge toy order (thankfully not this year) that went back because my local post office refused to accept the shipment. So back it went to the Toys R Us processing center. The whole thing was so annoying because until TRU receives the items, they won't resend. Just make sure to check specific shipping details, particularly this time of year!

  25. Generation Kvetch,

  27. Thank you everyone for your help with the wedges!

Connor- I was also able to get the 25% off to Coach (THANK YOU CASS!!!!) So they would only be $67! Are they $67 cute? :) I really like the idea of the wedge with jeans over it or maybe with tights? I sort of like the lighter colored one better because the brown on the wedge part looks off to me--- but i have a hard time deciding things just based on online so that could be it too. Thanks for your help! Which color did you try when you originally ordered them? I wish I could see a photo of them on! :)

  28. I'd like to 2nd xoxo's rave for Brooks Brothers. The quality is excellent and I've been happy with everything I ever purchased. My favorite BB item is the no-iron cotton shirt. Almost every time they run the 2 for $99 deal I pick up a couple more.

BB is one of the few merchants that doesn't make their cashmere sweaters in China. I have a couple cashmere sweaters from last year that are still completely pill-free. I couldn't resist buying a couple more sweaters on Monday when they had 40% off cashmere.

This morning I saw the 40% off shoes sign and I stopped in to try on the croc/snakskin heel pumps. Unfortunately the 3.5 inch heels were a no-go for me, but it's a wonderful deal for heel wearers.

    ReplyDelete
  29. @JCrewlove, yes, definitely $67 cute. (On the other hand, I paid FP for my suede Amalfi Malias, and feel they're worth it too, simply for the comfort & versatility.)

Agreed, prefer the light suede upper (originally bought clay color) so it's not so high-contrast against the light-colored wedge heel. Plus I figure w/lighter color I can pair it bare lets & slouchy socks in spring/early summer and wear with shorts & casual skirts and it wouldn't look as heavy as the brown suede.

Wearing the booties w/JC timber tweed pencil skirt, cashmere Elette sweater, grey ribbed tights & cognac-colored belt; also really like it w/titanium trooper cargos. Enjoy, you got 'em at an amazing price! Love how JCAs share coupons!

  30. I have this Old Navy coat in orange (which is no longer available online, sorry). It totally reminds me of J.Crew and is much better quality than I expected it to be. As a plus size girl who's never been able to wear any J.Crew outerwear, I found this to be a cute alternative!

  36. That was me w.the EB jackets -- there may be other styles on sale in the B&Ms, but I only noticed the Windfoil and Weatheredge parkas at 50% off.

I think it's just terrible that the Web site is not offering the same deal!

  37. Would love to review the Ann Taylor Cashmere V-neck sweater (not the button-up cardigan) I received. Cranberry red color is true to the picture shown online and the feel of the sweater is GLORIOUS. Omg. I have become a cashmere fiend and this sweater is certainly a staple. No pilling, either.

    ReplyDelete
  38. FWIW, I noticed earlier the Eddie Bauer Windfoil jackets are on sale online - not quite 50% off, but like 35%ish. Not as good as in-store, but if you don't want to make the trip...

Also (not sure if this was posted yet?) but free ship with EB thru tomorrow with STNICK.

  39. I was at the Ann Taylor outlet a few weeks ago and saw those Patent Bow Peeptoe pumps that were pretty popular earlier this year. They were only $70 + 40% off, great deal if you missed out the first time. Had them in a patent nude and black

  40. I absolutely love the men's extra slim and regular slim fit shirts from Brooks Brothers at a bricks and mortars store!!! First time I bought there they had a three shirt for $ 219 sale. Then two weeks ago, they had two shirts for I believe $ 109. This is great because I don't have to wait for shipment. The fit is amazing and the quality is excellent.

  41. BTW to Canadians, JCrew was mentioned in today's Globe and Mail:

    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/canadian-clothing-retailers-brace-for-us-tide/article1829009/

    ReplyDelete
  42. rtfit_jcrew, interesting article, thanks for sharing. I've never shopped Jacob or Reitman's, they look like disposable clothing shops to me. I have shopped at Tristan, which offers decent quality Canadian-made apparel as part of their line.

I do believe that with Canadians doing well economically and the downturn in the U.S., retailers are looking north for expansion. I've seen a lot of new U.S. retailers open out west over the past couple of years and more are coming. Hopefully we will eventually get our J.Crew here too.

    ReplyDelete
  43. xoxo, ditto your Tristan comment. Even their men's line is pretty decent.

Yes I hope we'll get our JCrew stores soon. Fortunately my city has a Brooks Brothers store already albeit their price points are a bit higher than 'Crew.

  44. Just got an email from Talbots: Tonight from 9-midnight (your time) take $50 off full priced dresses, user code HOLIDAY. Plus free ship on orders of $125 or more.

    HTH someone.

    ReplyDelete
  45. rtfit_jcrew, we have a BB B&M and also an outlet here, but I've never been to the outlet. it's true the price points are higher than J.Crew but the sales are really good and the quality as you know, top notch. Plus, they will take anything back at any time if you are not satisfied. No questions, full refund with a receipt. You can't beat that. If only they were a bit more fashion-forward. But then, they wouldn't be Brooks Brothers. :^)

    ReplyDelete
  46. jcrewlove - here's your review :)
(fair warning to others - long post, so feel free to skip if you're not interested in the Coach shoes!)

First impression - lovely shoes! I have definitely decided that I must have a pair in this style.

The details - overall, I agree with everything Connor said. They run a tad small - I've always been a 10 in everything, but lately have been a 9 1/2 in a couple brands (Nicole Kindle oxfords which I love and La Canadienne boots). The only JC shoes I've tried are boots, and a 10 fit nicely. I ordered a 9 1/2 in these cause that was all they had. They fit nicely length wise (I nearly always have issues with heel fit cause I have really narrow heels). They do have a hard sole, and the two eyelets don't offer much compensation for my narrow feet. With normal feet, maybe you'd still want to size down 1/2 size.

I didn't find them too high with the platform. Pretty easy to walk in, and seemed pretty comfortable but sometimes it's hard for me to tell just walking around the house. I should also say I'm not much of a heel girl, though I aspire to be more of one. :) I work in a really casual office and will probably get weird looks for wearing heels, but oh well!

I ordered the brown. I agreed with you guys that it looked off in the online pic but I actually really liked the look IRL. I would ideally want more of a cognac color so I went for the brown instead of the clay.

Anyway, I'm not keeping this particular pair as I ordered them from Lord & Taylor at $149, but I might reorder from Coach if they're still in my size. I might think about trying the ones Connor mentioned since the extra eyelets might better accommodate narrow feet. But I would absolutely say the Cassys are worth $67! You should go for it, and let me know what you think when you get them! :) And yes, I will send you some IRL pics, so keep an eye on your email!

  51. @xoxo I'll give you a run for blog hog of the night :P

ditto your comments about Jacob and Reitmans. Their offerings consist of mainly artificial fibres - itchy, sweaty, pilly, shrinky. they are NOT competitors in J. Crew's caliber. For work clothes and stepped up casual I do my shopping at Mexx, Club Monaco, BR, even EB, and lately have been checking in on Talbots. So JC's brand of retail magic is going to fill a hole in our malls for preppy/ edgy/ casual/ work that I don't see any other retailer does at the moment.

Interestingly Aritzia (and for the Vancouverites, Plenty) is already doing young hollywood/ trendy/ casual. the teens and 20 somethings sport their wares like it's a uniform. Cocoony sweaters, skinny jeans, plaid boy shirts have been mainstays at the store for literally years. JC will have to come up with something different if they want that consumer group's money.

I am living near an Anthro store right now, love. When I move home next year, supposedly a B&M will be opening up, just in time. Now, THAT store is fun to shop in.

  56. Closet Crisis, LOL. I'm a terrible blog hog but I spend a lot of work time sitting around waiting for people in other timezones lately so I lurk here and there in the meantime. Should be doing my own blog I guess...

I've only ever bought one thing from Aritzia. I don't like the TnA brand name so I would not buy any of that line, a major component of Aritzia. A lot of the other things are meh colors and just not interesting IMO. Whenever I go in there the SAs show me a myriad of items and none are anything I would wear so I end up leaving empty-handed. Maybe worth a longer look but the SAs are so "helpful" that I get turned off quickly. I'm from the South and you can't get more laid back than that. If you ask for help people will snap to it but otherwise you're given a sunny "Hello" and left to peruse at your leisure. Purr and Gravity Pope are two Canadian stores that are really good at that concept and I understand it is a cultural thing. But really, I'm an adult, I can shop all on my own, thankyouverymuch.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Oh, on shoes. From what I've read here JC's shoes really sound iffy. For the shoe addict, here's an option - gravitypope.com

As many styles as there are stars, and no, they are not cheap, but then, neither are JC shoes. Cool thing about GP? For the price point you're actually getting designer goods.

Current promo % off full priced item (yeah, you save the HST) runs till Dec. 12th. Free ship on orders of $300 (this one I find funny... just tells me there's little with price tag under $200 LOL)

I'm hoping Santa reads my mind and gets me a pair of Paul Smith heels. A girl can dream right?

@Gigi - cool! Will keep an eye out for update at Tal.

@xoxo: great minds think alike! Show GP some love. Aritzia? I usually wear my most untrendy stuff in there just so the teenage SA's will leave me alone. I look like someone's mom when I shop there :P I love their drapey cardigan's and selection of jeans. Pretty good coats too. I'm from the Westcoast so we're pretty laid back (must be all the "herbal" stuff wafting in the air). ;)

  60. Closet Crisis, Gravity Pope will ship free for pickup at a local store. The current FP promo lasts until Dec 12 but the 20-30% off select fall footwear lasts until Christmas Eve.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Closet Crisis you are so funny! I'm turning 25 soon and look younger than my years so Aritzia SAs are always on me like mad. Usually I'm wearing a pencil skirt, heels and Jackie twinset so I would think they would avoid me but nooo.

I *LOVE* Gravity Pope. They gave me a Rewards card for 10% off all the time so they love me back too. I'm a shoe addict. It's a sickness and my husband feeds it so I know I will never get better. :P

  62. Loft - 40% off your entire purchase... for 'a limited time.' I stepped into the store to ask an SA when it ends and she said she didn't know. She didn't think it will go thru the weekend. I don't know why she thought that. Most of the promos seem to go until Sun.

    ReplyDelete
  63. @xoxo: I live 3 blocks away from GP's flagship. It's daaaaangerous... I like shopping for shoes at end of the season, but GP broke me this year. If it wasn't for the fact that it's -10c and snowing right now I'd be there in a sec to check out what they have on the sales rack :P

  64. I have been getting emails with 25% off and free shipping on purchases over $50.00 from Lands End since making a few purchases from LE Canvas this summer. Many sales seem to require a pin to activate and are one time purchases but worth getting on their mailing list for. The quality and price of L.E Canvas tee's are better than J.Crew tee's which I swore off of completely last year.

I just used the 25% off and free shipping to order the Heritage Poor Boy Turtleneck Sweater which has a nautical look ($17.99 w/ 25% off), and two summer basics, the Women's fit and Flare Dress ($17.99) and women's Pattern Cotton Lawn Skirt. I know that it is freezing in most of the country now, but I don't mind stocking up on inexpensive basics. Fabulous Florida Mommy did an excellent review of the dress and other LE Canvas items when they came out last summer and looks amazing in them: http://fabulousfloridamommy.blogspot.com/2010/07/lands-end-canvas-reviews.html

I am happy with my past purchases, their customer service is excellent and you can't beat their return policy.

  70. Just placed my first order with BB, for four of their dress shirts. I am hoping they will fit well even though I am tall. For $35 each (SUCH A STEAL) I am willing to try them out. And if they work, I will be selling all of my J.Crew ones which are such a bear to iron, I hate them!

Today BB has 40% off all women's but here I am still buying from the clearance section.

  71. Does anyone have a 25% off Coach coupon they are not using? In store or online. I really want one of the bags but cannot afford full price.

  73. For anyone interested, I received the LEC puffer vest. I got it at 40% off, so around $50. It fits just a shade big, but has a belt, which I love, and is really nicely made and very warm.

  75. Based on the opinions I read here, I made my first purchase yesterday from BB. I ordered a pure, camel hair coat. I hope the quality is impeccable.

Alexis, thank you for this post area on jc like retailers - I think it is great.

  76. Regarding Brooks Brothers: I was in the store yesterday and I noticed, to my chagrin, that some of their cashmere sweaters now say "made in China." :(

  78. I don't know if anyone is still following this post, but BB has a 15% off promotion (20% off if you use a BB credit card) and free shipping with $200+ order going on right now. They have women's no-iron shirts in the clearance section for $35.80. With the additional 15% off and free shipping, you can buy 7 shirts, originally $89.50 each, for just over $200.
