J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Received the Factory plaid silk blouse in my most recent order, and love it.

If you have been coveting the retail silk plaid blousanna tunic (like I was), this is a great substitute. It's fun and festive for the holidays and can be worn tucked or untucked.

The material is nice, and feels almost identical to the chiffon flouncette blouses. The fit is generous, I took my normal 0 and it's loose and blouse-y. Posted pictures here.

  2. Just received a few things ... I know some of these are currently sold out online (it takes a while to ship things here) but hope this will help someone.

    * Harriet wool crepe blazer in black - I have found J.Crew blazers to run large. I sized down to a 2 and it fits great! Love it! Not boxy, and long enough for me (5'9").

The only thing I would change is to make the sleeves roll-able - they have buttons and are a bit fitted. I'll probably just push them up.

    * Merino and mohair shawl collar cardigan - the Sweet Almond color looks NOTHING like it does online. The sweater body is actually a mauve/pink. Online it looks like cream. The mohair trim is grayish.

Strange color combo - they are definitely different colors and don't go well together IMO.

Collar is thick and fuzzy rather than fluffy / silky like I thought it would be. Seemed too thick for the merino body, which is very thin. Would not recommend.

    * Silk two-way tee - the Warm Taupe is again more mauve than I hoped - thought it might be more a brownish nude. The v-neck was too low and overall fit was big and boxy. I probably won't re-order. Size down on this if you get it.

For comparison, I also got the Madewell Silky Scoopneck Tee in Heather Rose Quartz (more pink than coral). Unfortunately the fit was weird on this as well. Tight arms and big body, and the neck has raw edges. Too bad because the fabric is gorgeous, very soft with a subtle sheen.

  3. could somebody please review the chalet turtleneck sweater(#34382).
how is fit(TTS?),how is the quality?
    any opinions?
    TIA

  4. Chevron cami (34024) - generously sized. Check measurements and you may need to size down. No fishing line hem, it is actually sewn securely. Smoky charcoal is pretty and true to online image.

Lace rows tank (34026) - not as generous as the Chevron, but pretty low cut (the top of my bra cups peeked out). This one *does* have the fishing line hem. Heirloom pink color is pretty, a little more nude than I was expecting.

Is it me, or did the silk tops use to be thicker? Both this and the chevron felt very thin.

Rosebuds perfect shirt (33342) - Take your usual perfect shirt size. Cotton is thinner/'gauzier' than say, the tartan boy shirt. In addition, I didn't find this one to be pink at all, but more taupe. There are some flecks of a citron-like color in it that you can't tell from the online pic.

  5. Silver_lining, thanks for the reviews. I have been eyeing those two tanks for awhile now.

  6. @ silver lining, I agree, the silk tops used to be thicker and they used to have lining. I have returned the Katzy cami and the Lace tee for this reason, and I am going to return the Darla ruffle cami because I feel like I'm wearing underwear, it's so thin. A piece of clothing is no good to me if I have to wear another camisole underneath it. I also find that their scoop necks (whether silk camis or t-shirts) are too low -- I have returned items for this reason too. I don't have much cleavage either, but again, I don't like having to wear an undergarment under something. Besides, the layering looks sloppy.

That said, I got the Stadium-cloth boulevard trench coat and love it so much. The fabric is thick and warm (strange that it feels thicker than the stadium-cloth peacoat), the cut is spot on, and the color goes with everything (got the sandstone). It runs a little big, IMO -- I am usually a size 6 in J Crew coats but I took a size 4 in this one, and could have taken a size 2 too if I wanted a more slim look. Got it in-store during a recent special -- 20% off outerwear plus extra 25% off. Worth every penny.

  7. No problem, Laurie. They're cute - but I think they'll go lower in price.

Skinny ultra-lounge pant (33004) - definitely comfortable. But zoom right in on the main pic online. See the pills on the inside of the thighs? That's what you'll get after one wear. Also, the exposed seams will start to unravel and fray. This is a disappointment - I was hoping they'd be like my skivvies from 2007, but I'll stick with those - they're still in good shape after 3 winters of wear.

  8. Received the Nightball Blue pencil skirt and matching Jackie cardi yesterday. LOVE this color...absolutely beautiful! Pics here.

  9. Received the Lady Day coat in nightfall blue. The color is pretty (already have the skirt and the jackie in that color) but the fit is off. Its too tight in the chest and I took it in the same size as my stadium-cloth blvd trench. Its not uncomfortable but it is snug. its sold out online now and I don't know if I should keep it.

OT - how discounted does outerwear get post Christmas (Dec and Jan)? I am contemplating to wait it out since I don't "need" a coat now.

    Thanks!

  10. Hi everyone! I am considering ordering the double-serge pencil skirt for the first time, and would love to hear about this skirt from ladies who have owned it for awhile -- does it stretch out? Are you still happy with it? Is there another pencil skirt you would recommend more?

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  11. A, I had to SU in the Lady Day to accomodate my bust. There is no extra bust room in that coat at all but at least it falls with only a slight A-line so sizing up shouldn't be too voluminous on the bottom. I'd recommend you try to get the next size up for a proper fit. Wearing it too small will strain the buttons and seams and will not look as good as the correct size. You may also find it uncomfortable to drive.

I've seen coats go for 1/2 to 1/3 the price after the holidays but sizes and colors are very limited in some styles. There has been extra30% off sale prices during post-holiday sales too and if you really want a specific item you may need to stalk the website dilligently. You could try the Find It service if you can afford to buy another before returning the one you have.

  12. Nicole,

I own two of the double serge pencil skirts from this season and absolutely love them. The material is substantial and very warm, and has a fabulous texture. I'm in the office for 10 hours every day; the serge skirts are extremely comfortable for a long day and have minimal stretching out from what I have observed. They also don't wrinkle as badly as some other J.Crew skirts I have.

    Hope that helps!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Nicole W: I have a couple of the current Double Serge wool skirts from this season (bronzed ochre and nightfall blue) and several of the Perfect Pencil skirts from last year. IMO, the pencil skirt is one of the things J.Crew does best. The Double Serge skirts are of high quality, and the colors are just beautiful. In my experience, none of my j.crew pencil skirts have stretched out at all, but then again, it's not like I'm wearing them every day. If you are going to get a J.Crew pencil skirt, I would definitely recommend the double serge...you won't be disappointed! And fyi...they are running tts this year. Get your normal size. HTH!

  14. xoxo - thanks!
Its sold out and there are none in stores. I asked them to search for any returns - nothing. I even asked for measurements on petites, but its way too short. Its not scheduled to be restocked either.
I might just get the colletta with thinsulate instead. I don't think this color will make it to a sale.

  15. hahaha...just noticed that I typed "Nightball blue" in my post above. Whoops! Y'all knew what I meant. :)

  16. I just got the moss tweed mini, on sale for $79.99..... I sized up one size, so that I could shimmy it down a bit on my hips for some added length. I posted a pic on my blog if you'd like some reference. It is a darling skirt! I wore it with the merino boyfriend sweatshirt, and think it rocked!! Love the slouchy look of that, and there are some of the beaded ones showing up in the sale site now!

    ReplyDelete
  17. A, you are probably right that it won't pop back in the nightfall blue, it's such a popular color.

Earlier this year I was stalking the stadium-cloth peacoat in nordic blue, which sold out really fast online and in stores. My online PS put my name on a WWFIFY "wish list" that was to be valid for 30 days on the specific item. It was almost two weeks later when she emailed that the item had been returned to a store and held for me if I still wanted it. You could try asking for that service if you have an online PS. They should honor the current promo price as well. I love my PS. She has helped me find quite a few sold out and in-store only items.

  18. Irl pics of the sequin sweatshirt (33583, $98) in this post.

  19. Nicole W - I'm in the double-serge skirt club. It's a really lovely skirt. I recommend black, as it's a good wool skirt to have and that's a great basic of course. And then a color if you can swing it. You can see irl pics in this post and links to other bloggers' irl pics.

  20. AppGal - you pictures look great. I might just have to get the Nightfall Blue Jackie - after Christmas!

  22. I just received the chalet turtleneck sweater (#34382) and it's going back, I'm sad to say. The collar refuses to lay like it does on the website model and it just looks awkward. The sizing is fine - I ordered my usual small - but the small amounts of wool and mohair are scratchier than I like, too.

I also ordered a couple perfect-fit boatneck tees (#27237), but apparently I'm not a small in those (unlike the rest of their t's!) and they're skin-tight. booo!

None of this is making me feel better after JCrew dropped the ball on the drapey sequin tee (#33541). I placed my order in early November, found out it was backordered (not a problem) and then they sent me an email at the beginning of this month, saying they sold out! arghh!

  24. Matchstick jeans fit great. Pics on my blog.

Also got the dream zip cardi in dark cypress and the SA honoured the sales price of the other colours online. Goes perfectly with the store-only Sunnie skirt and is also a perfect colour match to the ballet flats which are currently on sale.

  25. Nicole W, I will add my vote in favor the double-serge pencil skirt. Although this year's is not quite as well-made as past year's it is still great quality and a timeless classic. Gigi's suggestion of starting with basic black is a good one. Paired with a white blouse and mixed up with different accessories, the possibilities are endless. Advice from my Grandmother.

    And speaking of my Grandmother...
OT - Brooks Brothers has 40% off mens and womens outwear today. They are doing daily deals all week. Nowhere near the outerwear style or color selection that J.Crew offers but the quality is top notch.

  26. OT: Boden started their winter sale today. Picked up 4 items I had been eyeing/waiting on for a sale. Like the flat rate shipping too:) Many items are out of stock since it started at 8:00 am today. Never saw clothing fly so fast out the door. I placed my order at 8:07 and got an email that it shipped at 11:30 already!!!

  27. Can't recall if I've shared this feedback already, so if I have, please forgive me ...

Calista cami (Moss Blossom) -- this is HUGE. I can usually wear a 6 or an 8 in most JC tops/blouses but on this one, the underarms bagged out so badly I have to return it. Which is a shame, because I liked ithe print and the collar!

Same goes for the Traversa stripe tank in the bronze-y stripe color -- way too big; if I can get it in a Small I may repurchase it.

Oh how I tried to love the Traversa cardi in the orchid purple color, but I had to get a Large instead of my usual Med and it just doesn't hang right. Buh-bye.

Toothpick white denim jeans I was saving for next summer are SKINTIGHT. Not sure what happened, as I take a straight-up 31 in Toothpicks, but I'm mad because they were only $13.99.

Last but not least, grabbed a cute little straw bucket hat, also for next spring/summer, that despite being a M/L was too tight (and I have a smallish head!) *And* it was uber scratchy on the inside, the grosgrain band around the interior wasn't wide enough to cover the scratchy straw.

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

'GIFTS' promo order is sitting on my porch waiting for me, we shall see how that works out! :)

Does anyone know if stores are running any promos aside from the outerwear one?

I snaggled a Poppy lady day coat on eBay yesterday for $85 including shipping...here's to hoping it fits properly!

  28. I have an order waiting for me at home I'll review tonight!!

  29. I'd love to hear from JCA's a kind of "status report" on how their 2010 sweaters are holding up, especially because FS will be back soon and we should be informed! :)I'll start:

Alpaca long cardigan (30104) - got mine in September, wear it about 4 times a week around the house, and it has pilled all the way up the arms, but not in the body. I kind of expected that. Nothing the sweater shaver can't handle.

Arrow sweater-jacket(29002) - I have the heather carbon color and sadly to say, it is pilling/shedding a bit on the arms and front hem near the pockets. I've worn it about 3 times. I have wool sweater jackets from previous years (Alice and Sophie) and they have no pills.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Keeper: Swinton sequined sweater in navy - I had purchased the copper but returned because the color was unflattering for me. The navy is really lovely. I do not think this is worth $400. However, I did not pay that much and am pleased with what I received for the price I did pay. The swirl pattern of the sequins is very subtle and the weight is very light. The fit is kind of slouchy and informal. I do think I will have my tailor add one hook and eye closure though, to make it a little less fly away.

    Going Back:
Lulu Frost blizzard bracelet. I liked but did not love this piece. It is very sparkly and lightweight, so easy to wear. However, I feel like I have seen similar things for less money elsewhere, so did not keep.
Plaid Mackintosh - I wanted to love this so badly. However, there are weird zippered pockets right over the bust that were unflattering. I have short arms and the sleeve length was perfect on me, so they might be too short for others. It is a thin material and has a great striped lining that reminded me of old J. Crew. I prefer the Barbour utility mac to this jacket. J. Crew does not carry, but it is somwhat similar and available elsewhere.

  31. Nicole W.: I want to add to what everyone else has said about the double-serge pencil skirts. They are great!

OT: I think we've had this discussion before (sadly, I can't recall the answers), but does anyone buy their PS a Christmas gift? If so, I'd love some ideas! TIA!

  32. rynetta phd-
i'd love to hear gift ideas for my ps too!

  33. Flannel pajama set: Got these in XXS. I am 5' tall, so they are big all over, although the pants are not absurdly long. The shirt is pretty long and loose, but the set as a whole is super comfy and cute! I do feel a little odd in head-to-toe plaid, but it works. Would recommend for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  34. rynetta phd & LizzyT- I think a great gift would be a starbucks or local gift card for coffee or something somewhere close to the J. crew location. They are always running out on breaks to grab coffee or a quick bite to eat.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Great idea! But how much do you think the GC should be for?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Lizzyt I think it totally depends on your relationship. I would think $10 to $15 with a nice note would be nice or higher if you feel like they are a closer friend! I think that would be very nice!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I recieved the wide calf hair belt last week and I LOVE it. I got my usual SM in belts, and it works higher up on my waist or lower with jeans. Really pretty in person :) I originally got the calf hair belt, but it was too skinny for my taste (plus I have too many skinnies). The wide suits me much better.

  38. One more review, inspired by Gigi.. The sequin sweatshirt is darling. Proof? See my pic on my blog! She reviewed it, and after I read her review, I realized, HEY! I am wearing this top. So I took my picture, and posted it in solidarity!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Arrived today: the Softspun Sunset dress in gray. I'm not sure about this (nor why I thought I could enjoy it this late in the year). Got my usual JC Small in this and it fit well but really is too thin to try to winterize at all. In case anyone was wondering...will prob keep for spring/next fall.

Also, I'm fairly new to JC and today received my first perfect-fit t in the boat neck 3/4 sleeve style. I ordered in several colors b/c of the promo and they are SO SO thin. I can't really see wearing these as anything but an undershirt for layering. TTS. Alas, I think most will go back.

I did, however, LOVE the silk ruffle perfect-fit henley 3/4 sleeve. It is a thick super soft cotton. I have it in navy already and got the cedar, which is beautiful. I thought the regular perfect-fit Ts would be thick like that...but no. I think I could've sized down in this, though. So if you're on the fence, go down. I think maybe it has less elasticity.

Love the Dulphine open cardi in gray. Just a hint of itch...nothing unbearable. TTS. Also received the Alpaca open cardi in black and beige. They sent the wrong size in black so that's going back, but man that thing is itchy! Great sweater, great flowiness, soft, perfect for skinnies and boots. But I don't know how I'm going to deal with the itch factor. Will wear around the house this weekend to see...

    Silver Lining: does yours itch?

  40. LizzyT, what about a personalized/monogrammed mug with a Starbucks GC to match. Lillian Vernon usually has travel mugs that you can get with a name on them. I got these for my kids' teachers one year and they were the favorite gift b/c it meant nobody got their coffee confused!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I just received my cashmere cowlnecks, XXS, heather tide and black. I am usually an XS in JC sweaters but asked an online CS for measurements and ordered the XXS instead. I am glad I did because they fit pretty well, cozy and slouchy, except the sleeves are a little tighter than I like. The heather tide color is gorgeous and the black is classic. I think these were worth the splurge. I am wearing the black one with my gold Sunnie skirt tomorrow!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hi St Germain - yeah, I find the Alpaca long cardigan itchy on bare skin but wear it with long-sleeved waffle tees underneath and it's not unbearable.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I received the Dream open shawl cardigan today and I LOVE it. It completely covers my butt and goes about 1" below; I was worried about the length since I'm 5'10" but I think it's OK with pixie pants. It is really really warm.

Chevron cami just seems... meh. Definitely size down. I ordered the dark plum in a size 2 and it still seems poofy below the chevrons. I am just not a fan of the fit; definitely sending it back.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Grabbed a few things at the B&M this weekend, and I have to say, I'm in love with my Cashmere Marbou cardigan (29007). One of the PS in my local store brought it to me, even though I had looked at it on the rack a few times before.

I've been looking for a more classically fitted black cardigan, and although this has the marbou, it completely fits the bill. It's fitted in all the right places, and has snaps instead of buttons (which I love).

I sized down in it - I'm normally a M, and I grabbed the last one, which was a S - I was surprised, since arms have seemed to run small this season, but very happy, as with the discount it was $57!

I've worn it all day today, and don't want to take it off!

@ Silver_lining: My Infinity cardigan (27925) bought late Sept/Oct, is pilling on each side, and it's worst on the side where I carry my bag. I love it for it's comfort and length, but I haven't worn it that many times that it should look like it does.

My Silvana cardigan (29004) is however still looking brand new (maybe three wearings?).

I'm hoping my new cashmere cardigan holds up well...

    ReplyDelete
  45. I should be getting my order from last week tomorrow and will report back of some note worthy items.

silver_lining: My two Arrow sweaters (black/hthr elm) both have been worn 4-5x/each and have been showing pilling in those locations as well.

  46. Received the Double-cloth Salon coat today. It is a beautiful coat. I adore the shape - it's perfectly nipped at the waist (in fact, it fits a bit small through the waist) with a tulip-shaped bottom that gives my small boyish frame an hourglass look (and looks like I have a bit of a butt). I can imagine that hippier/more pear-shaped ladies would find it unflattering. My problems with the coat are 1) it actually has no pockets, despite the fact that the description claims "on-seam pockets" - there are just flaps. Not practical for a cold-weather coat, IMO. My other problem is that the double-cloth in general is not particularly warm - it's the about the weight of a thick sweatshirt. Not winter material.

I also received a few Perfect-fit boatneck tees, which I was delighted to find on promo plus the 30% off code. However, the tees are MUCH smaller than my perfect-fit boatnecks from seasons past. Held up next to a PF boatneck from this spring, the new ones are a full 2 inches smaller in width through the body and much narrower in the shoulders. They still fit, but much tighter than my older ones. I can't decide if I'll try to exchange them (not sure whether they'll give me the promo price of $13.65 if I try to exchange in-store over the red phone). Anyone have any luck getting free return shipping and free shipping on an exchange by contacting CS and complaining that sizing was off on an online-only item?

    ReplyDelete
  47. MDPA: can you update if you try that redphone return with the boatneck Ts? I've never tried them before so nothing to compare to, but I agree that they are tight. I ordered my usual S and would definitely want to size up if I were to wear as anything but a layering piece. My big gripe was the thinness of the material, though. Good grief, it was thinner than any T I've every purchased.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Went to my B&M today to return my bum items from 2 previous orders. Sadly didn't walk out with anything! Almost bought a black woolly ribbed turtleneck ($39.99) -- super lightweight and the buttons at the cuffs are so cute! -- but decided to wait for another extra 30% off promo.

Also tried on the super 120s tuxedo dress and it was divine but one size too big for me. It was marked at $49.99 and is a size 10 if anyone is interested. (Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh, NC)

My GIFTS order came today and I'm so thrilled to have my Factory textured ruffle henley in every available color (lol) and I got a few tops for my mom, son and husband too.

  49. Dream open shawl cardigan-really comfortable but I would size down.

I'm thinking about getting the Cashmere open cardigan-anyone know how that fits?

    Taffeta tulip mini-size up 1.

The boyfit shirts TTS-the flannel is really comfortable too!

  50. I got the hooded fairground cardigan a few days ago and I will be returning unfortunately! I had such high hopes for this http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/sweaters/jackets/PRDOVR~34007/34007.jsp

It seems to suffer from the same tight arm issue we have been seeing this season- and I swear I don't have abnormally large arms! The body seems boxy to me and even with the sweater promo I'm just afraid of it pilling- I'm not ok with that for the price! I can't find the post now but didn't someone say the 5 gauge has been pilling this year or is that wrong?

Anywho cute idea (I love hoods!!) just doesn't work for me

    ReplyDelete
  51. Ali, I ordered the flannel pajama set in the XXS too with the promo. I decide to splurge because unlike the Gap ones (they I usually buy and I am very happy with) the top is a shirt and not a tee. It is not here yet and I was a little bit nervous about the size as I am usually a true XS but I have always been sized out in their pajamas as the XS was too big. Glad to hear that you like it. I am 5'2" so based on your review it should fit great.

    ReplyDelete
  52. @ Christina, I didn't try the cashmere open cardi myself but inquired with my PS last week and she told me it is running TTS. I thought it looked big in the picture but she said I should stick with my regular size. She typically does a good assessing size for me.

@ jcrewlove...I had that hoodie on my post-holiday list. Thanks for the input...I had to return several items for the tight arm issue this year and since you'd need to wear a shirt underneath, I won't take the risk. It is such a cute item though! I'm a big hoodie fan as well :)

  57. This may be a long shot, but can anyone comment on the sizing for Quoddy ring boots?
I'm usually an 11 1/2 for J. Crew shoes, but the ring boots are only available in 11, do you think these would fit me?
For their grizzly boots, they recommend getting a half size up, but it doesn't mention anything on ring boots.
    TIA.

  58. Nothing terribly exciting, but for those who are looking for some staples:

Merino turtleneck (30711): I'm solidly between a small and a medium in J Crew and I took a medium in this one. It is still plenty fitted. Note that it is pretty thin, which is both good and bad: not too bulky, but also not very warm. I layered a Smartwool merino cami (LOVE this) underneath for some added warmth and to keep everything completely office-appropriate :)

Dream v-neck cardigan (28764): New to dream sweaters. I read the reviews and kept my fingers crossed for manageable pilling, figuring that the discounted price would soften the blow. Loved the dark cypress, but it's going back. I ordered a small in this one and it was way too fitted/shrunken for me - I would recommend ordering your larger size if you're between sizes - and the wool just felt like it was going to pill. Not a winner for me.

A few pieces that have been in rotation for a while:

I'll add my support for the double-serge pencil skirts. TTS. Great investment.

Finally, the denim pencil skirt (29179) has been a lifesaver for me this fall. I'm hoping that my coworkers haven't noticed how often I wear it! It's professional, but not too formal, which is a difficult balance to strike sometimes. Fit is TTS. I took the same size as my double-serge pencil skirts. I actually love this skirt so much that I ordered a "backup" to tuck away for when the first one starts to look worn! Yikes.

I hope these are helpful to someone out there in JCA land. I really appreciate everyone's advice and reviews! It's a real lifesaver for those of us who don't live close to a store. Thanks.

  59. Has anyone else noticed the
Stretch vintage bootcut cords, item 28363, are running a size too big this year? I'm definitely exchanging for one size smaller.

  60. I also received the hooded fairground cardigan, but its a keeper for me. I'm between an xs and a small in sweaters, and I went with a small. It does give me room for a shirt underneath (unlike the dream zip henley, which I should have bought in a bigger size because of the tight arm issue). I'm a little worried about the pilling too, but I love the style and the weight, so I'm keeping it.

Lia, glad to hear you like the cashmere cowlneck, my gray one is on the way. Love how it looks in the catalog.

  61. I purchased the Regent Peacoat and received it yesterday. I am very disappointed with it! For $500 (got 25% discount), I was surprised at how thin and cheap the wool fabric feels. It's a beautiful coat, but definitely not worth a penny over $200...even for a Fox Bros collaboration.

  62. Has anyone else noticed the new "video" feature in the denim section on jcrew.com? Just noticed it tonight...kinda cool. Not sure if it will help me figure out how the jeans will fit any better but...you have to admit it's better than Madewell's pathetic wishlist technology!

Apologies if this has already been discussed!

  63. Grrrrrr. Got my cashmere order today, not much was as I had anticipated. The v neck was cut like a JCPenney sweater, shapeless and SUPER long. My regular size, a small, was too big. The t shirt cashmere sweater was better, but still bulkier for a small than I had expected. The cashmere hat is ok, but I don't know how to work it without the plain knit making me look like a cancer patient. And lastly, the panne velvet bell skirt, in a 4 which is my usual size, seems slightly too small. Strike on all fronts, and there goes my cardholder discount.

  64. patsystone - I hadn't noticed the denim video. Thanks! Gap has had the video denim feature on their site for sometime & I have found it very helpful. JCrew's video selection is pretty 'slim', lol. Three pairs of skinny's, a pair of toothpick & matchstick, & one pair of bootcut.

  65. I received some of my orders & so far there is nothing I can keep.

-Francille fray blouse, item 28880, in Olive Moss is a beautiful top. The neckline is super flattering, the fit is tts & also flattering, but the heavy weight zipper touching the skin on my back is quite noticeable & uncomfortable to me. (The silk embroidered daisy eyelet tops have a back zipper part of the way down the back of the top, but is lined on the inside so the zipper doesn't make contact w/your skin.) I guess it could be remedied w/a silk cami underneath, but it would have to be low enough to be out of view of the front neckline, and high enough in the back to shield your skin from the zipper.

    -Dream zip henley, size Medium
I sized up to a medium & it ended up being too big on me. Also, I'm not a fan of the zipper trend & although it's a cute sweater, I'm going to pass because I know in a year I won't want to wear it because of the zipper.

    -Velvet Ruby jacket in black
I went to a tall in this & the tie hits so high on my waist/rib cage it just didn't look right. It felt flimsy, which I expected, but I just didn't care for the fit or look of it. It does have two small buttons to fasten it at the waist if you don't want to use the tie.

    -Perfect-fit ruffle henley, item 32454
The pleated ruffle adds alot to this henley. It's just enough 'fluff' for peeking out under a sweater or jacket. Warning: the top I received has an unraveling seem on the top of the shoulder where the size tag is sewn. It is visible from the outside of the shirt, I didn't have to inspect the top to find it.

    -Cord Atlee skirt, item 28236
I tried sizes 4 & 6, and unfortunately the waist is so small it takes the skirt above my hips so it's entirely too short (I'm 5'7" & more leg than body). It also had more of a bell shape on me than how it looks on the model. I'm thinking I'd need a 10 & the length would probably still be too short. What was I thinking when I ordered this?? (Now that I've seen the Marissa Webb photo of her in sky high heels & the short bell shaped skirt, it's all that comes to mind when I see some of these skirts!)

    -Leather strap belt item 36636
Eh! The studs are too prominent so it's a pass. Also, size large does fit on my hips, but only to about two holes in.

    -Factory Shimmy Dress, item 19700
Opens the box, loves the dress. Puts the dress on, loves the dress. Tries to cross arms to remove the dress, screams! I can't take it off! While having the dress on, it fits perfect, no complaints. Somewhere in the arms/across the back of the shoulders, is some tightness to where I can't cross my arms and lift the dress over my head. (The neckline is too narrow to take it off any other way.) I had to get my husband to lift it off. The fear of being stuck in a dress unless someone is around to raise it over my head (& having to get help from an immature hubby who can have fun at my expense during this scenario) is too much ...it's going back. I highly recommend it though!! It's 70% cotton, 30% silk & an acetate slip comes w/it. The ruffles weren't 'too much', the material is nice & sort of sheer but there's a slip so thin material is not an issue. The dress has bra snaps (or slip strap snaps in this case). It has a side zip which isn't much help. I agree the black tie wasn't the best quality for the dress but if I had nothing else to use I'd wear it tied in a cute bow. The dress was a keeper for a brief moment in time. Honestly, part of me wants to consider keeping it. I have to convince myself not to. If I wanted to try it on again I can't because no one's here to help me take it off. :(

  69. IRL, I saw that picture of Marissa Webb and was like, "Oh, so that's the look they're going for". Looks cute on her and probably the small percent of the population that can pull it off. If I showed up to my job looking like that, I'd be sent home and a dress code reminder email would be circulated to the whole company. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  70. silver lining: forget showing up at a job, I can't imagine going out like that! It's completely ok for cute little girls (and I guess employee's of the fashion industry) but for the rest of us I think it's a no-no too. Plus, if I recall correctly, Marissa Webb looks bare-legged. Ahh, I can't imagine the draft!

  71. I received some of my GIFTS order and there were hits and misses. I posted pics here. Nightfall cambridge cardi, jackie, Julienne heels and Rosebuds shirt were keepers.

  72. Ot - Ok so awhile back conner and ajc posted about coach wedges that are similar to the mcalister wedges at jc. Has anyone tried these or know how coach shoes fit? I usually wear a 8 in jc flats but a 7.5 in many other brands. Any help is appreciated!! Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  73. I got the Wooly Ribbed T-neck in the black and olive colors. I do really like them and have worn several times. You must wear something underneath b/c otherwise it's see-through. The other problem is it stretches, so maybe size down? But the stretched out part for me was in the wrist area, so I don't know if sizing down would help or not. But I still like them alot despite these issues. I did get mine in store for $39.99 + 30 off maybe a month ago.

I really like the Dream Zip Henley alot. Looks super cute w/skinny jeans and boots.

Can anyone comment on if the Langford Oxfords run TTS, small or big? I'm hoping they run a little big b/c I ordered them in a 7.5 b/c they were sold out in the 8. I run between those 2 sizes, so fingers crossed.

    I also

  74. I just got the Camden leather brogues (item 23936) and I'm a bit meh about it. I don't think it's necessarily the shoes, although I think they are narrow, and I would have liked a more substantial heel. The leather is just OK, I would have liked more texture. I just have bought nicer brogues for less (Steve Madden's Melin is gorgeous, was on sale at Nordstrom for 69.99), or for more, but with more personality (www.yoox.com always has a fab selection of designer discounted brogues). I got the Camdens for a little over $100. I think they are worth about $70 - $80. $250 is just a ridiculous starting price for J Crew shoes, IMO. These are going back.

    ReplyDelete
  75. dinster - I have Steve Madden brogues and they are great. I think I paid around $75.

Irl pics of the Oona herringbone shift dress in this post.

  76. jcrewlove-

I actually ordered those shoes and they are due to arrive today. I'll come back and post after I've tried them on! :)

  77. Does anyone have the sequin mesh bell skirt? I received mine yesterday and it is adorable but SO SHORT. I know its supposed to be short, but how short is too short?? It hits me slightly higher than my fingertips....

    ReplyDelete
  78. Nicole, to echo the other posters, I really like the JC double serge skirts. I have black, charcoal and gray. The fabric is heavy and only suitable for winter, but not so heavy that it adds weight.

I ordered two wool gabardine pencil skirts, but I'm going to return them. They're nice, but the sizing is a bit narrow through the hips and upper thighs and my own shape is definitely not. I would need to size up and have the waist altered. I don't love them enough to bother. I also have two wool crepe pencil skirts on back order. I hope the shape is a bit curvier. I doubt that will be the case though.

I 2nd Dinster's love of Steve Madden's Melin oxfords. I have an embarrassing number of pairs and they've all been in regular rotation for the past year.

I also have and like the JC Stadium-cloth boulevard trench coat in navy. It's heavy and warm, but I don't find it to be particularly oversized. I ordered my usual size. It's a bit looser than the lady day coats, but more fitted than the plaza and crosby coats.

  79. ajr- I would LOVE to hear a review of them before I purchase! please do post your thoughts on if they are TTS, to high and overall if you love them :) Thanks so much! I would love to see a photo.... is that too much to ask? Sorry I am so excited!

  80. Jruby18 -- I have the Langford platform Oxfords and really like them a lot. I have worn them a few times now and find them extremely comfortable even after 8 hours at work.

I learned a while ago that in JC heels I'm a size 8, even though in real life I'm a 7.5 and in JC flats I'm a 7. Not sure if that helps you at all...hope yours fit because they are a terrific shoe.

    ReplyDelete
  81. jcrewlove - you are too cute! :) I will be happy to post the review. I will post it in the new thread from today about other brands - now that there's a place for such things makes sense to put it there :). I would also be happy to try sending you a picture - fair warning though, all I have is my camera phone. I don't have a blog but i could email it to you if you want.

anyway, look for the post later tonight! :)

  83. Just posted a big slew of reviews and pics
here. Sunnie, Icon Trench, Colletta in nightfall blue, merino strata, muse tanks, etc.

  84. ShopWM
Thanks for all the pics and reviews. Love the trench and I'm w/ you on the Colletta. I ordered the same in my size and doubt I will be keeping it. Though I need to see it IRL first I suppose.

I really want the Lady Day or Colletta in Rainforest Green. Why oh why did I wait until it was completely sold out? I currently have a store search being done for returns on this coat. Fingers crossed I get it.

  85. I got my Bronson booties today and I love them. I bought the smooth leather in black. The fit is TTS, the leather is super soft and they are very attractive on the foot. Highly recommend!

  86. Hi! I've been following this blog for quite awhile but I have never contributed. All your thoughts have been so helpful and influenced a lot of my purchases so thank you for that! I received a bunch of stuff in the mail today and I just thought I'd share. :)

First off, this is the first time in awhile I've been excited about my purchases from J.Crew. My friends and I constantly reminisce about the "good old days".

Dixon Tall Boots (brown): Very nice, look and feel well made ordered a 7.5. I have plenty of room to wear a thicker sock but not swimming in them if I choose to wear a cotton ankle sock. Overall, good.

Gingham Perfect Shirt (red): I typically a 2 but went with a 4 because I didn't want to risk any "puckering" in the chest. Very pleased with the shirt, will wear a lot.

Buffalo check boy shirt (autumn sunset): Meh, just meh. I like the pattern but the color was a bit muted than I expected and the material felt thin. Definitely not what I thought. Sadly, it might have to go back.

Cambridge cable crewneck sweater (nightfall blue): Okay, this might have been my own fault but based on the picture I thought the sweater was going to be navy. Instead, it has a lot of green in it, and looks almost like a dark teal. Haven't decided if I'm going to keep it, once I get over the shock of the color I plan to examine it more carefully.

Leggy denim jean in double-dip indigo wash(size 27): Definitely an impulse/act-your-age-and-take-a-risk buy. Overall, they fit well, although little tight for my personal style but I suppose that's expected when you order a "jegging". Good quality, will hold on to should I decide to fast for a week and step out in public. :)

Crystal ball necklace (antique silver): Again, meh. I don't know what I was thinking. I think I'll stick with my pearls.

Hope all of this helps, and thanks again!

  87. Chelsea- I have the sequin mesh bell skirt. I got my normal size at first but also noticed how SHORT it is (and I am totally a lover of the short skirts :) ) I returned mine and got a size up and am very happy with it. With all the bell skirts this year I sized up for length.

    HTH

    ReplyDelete
  88. Thanks jcrewlove! I just ordered a size up in the sequin bell skirt as well as the starry night mini. Hopefully one works out! I really want to be able to wear it in the warm weather without tights, so hopefully the length is longer because without tights that skirt is scandalous!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Chelsea -- will you report back on the starry mini? I would love to splurge and get the caramel colored one, but want to know if it's worth it....

    ReplyDelete
  90. Chelsea- I totally agree! I think with a size up that should help. I bought mine earlier this year when it was in store online and wore it without tights and now have been pairing tights with it just fine.

I am 5'2" / 5'3" though and it works out a-ok :) HTH! Hope you love!!!

  91. Recently received an online order and had mixed reviews.

I have loved every cashmere sweater from J Crew, until now :( The cashmere tie v neck sweater was horrible. I ordered a small, which I always do and it was massive. The inseams on the shoulders went down about 4 inches too long. I will be taking this back asap. One nice thing about it was the color (bronzed olive). I ended up placing a new order with my 30% off code and getting the cashmere crewneck tee in the same color! Can't wait.

I did love two other items from this same order. The cashmere shawl popover and the ever peacoat. Both are very soft and warm :)

    ReplyDelete
  92. St Germain, I ended up emailing erica@jcrew.com, and the PS who responded very kindly placed an order for me for the perfect-fit boatnecks in new sizes and honored the promo price with free shipping. I would suggest emailing if you're interested in exchanging.

  93. I want to second what Ali said about the flannel pajama set: I received mine and I LOVE it. I also got it in a XXS even If I am a true XS (based on previous experience with their pajamas that run big). I am 5'2" and it is still a little bit long on me, even if I don't need to hem it (it would have been a dealbreaker for me). The fit overall is great and the plaid is not overwhelming (it is really navy even if it looks darker in the pics). Only problem: I bought it as a present to myself for Xmas but I don't think I am going to resist until Xmas to wear it). I am shocked that it wasn't in their picks for gifts under $100 and I really reccomend it with the 25% off.

  94. Men's Red gingham shirt (item 12445) first impressions: just got this. This shirt is for someone who really loves colors because it is a bright red! It is a JCrew regular fit but it is more like a cross between regular and slim fit. I got the medium which is 15-15 1/2 but somehow the neck feels like a tad larger than 15 1/2. Maybe because it has a softer collar compared to my other dress shirts.

I absolutely love it but I have to ground it with a dark jacket/cardigan (navy or charcoal gray) and dark tie either navy or black.

  95. Just thought I'd mention: I had a very fancy sleeveless sheath dress to wear to the opera the other night here in Chicago, and the weather had become unexpectedly cold -- more like January/Febriary weather. I dropped into the Michigan Avenue J Crew store to see whether I could possibly find an evening sweater that would work with my Carmen Marc Valvo dress. They had several choices on sale, and I bought a great little black one -- for $49.95 -- with matte sequins and a zip front. I love the zipper and sequins together -- very fashion forward -- and liked the matte effect of the sequins, since the sweater is not too sparkly to wear by day. It was perfect with the dress. I hadn't remembered seeing a couple of the available evening sweaters in the catalogue, and since the prices were so good, I thought I'd give everyone a heads-up.
