30% Off Women's & Men's Outerwear {in stores & online}

"Thanks!" to many of you, including GigiOfCa (in this post) as well as Marietta, who shared the latest promotion from J.Crew.

J.Crew is offering 30% off select Women's & Men's outerwear. This promotion expires this December 8, 2010. The fine print includes:
*Prices as marked. Offer valid on men's and women's outerwear in J.Crew retail stores and at jcrew.com only and cannot be combined with any other in-store offer. Offer excludes Aether®, Authier®, Baracuta®, Barbour®, Belstaff®, Mackintosh®, Crescent Down Works, Dollar Trench®, Fjällräven® Kanken, Fox Brothers & Co., Gloverall®, Heller's Café, Levi's®, Mister Freedom® and Woolrich John Rich and Bros. Offer is not valid at J.Crew Factory stores or on J.Crew Factory items. Offer valid through Wednesday, December 8, 2010, 11:59pm ET. Previous purchases are not eligible for free shipping discount.
Love to see that this promotion is automatically applied. It works great with their offer for free shipping on orders of $150+ with promo code SHIP150. (This offer expires December 20, 2010.)
Personally though, there are not too many coats I am interested right now. I have so many beautiful ones from previous seasons of J.Crew, that I am all set.

Will you take advantage of this latest promotion? If so, what items did you pick up?

  1. Thanks for posting Alexis, I had no idea about this promo!

Hmmm... so how does the double cloth Colletta coat run? It is way small like the lady day? I have no idea which size I would need. Tall something... 6 or 8, that is the question.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Help, help! Need to know if it's true that the lady day coat runs small. At the moment I'm a 6/8, with most items that are a 6 fitting better these days. Can I get away with an 8? Or will the sleeves pull up too short on me?

Keep in mind that I'm sorta fkat on top and I never, ever wear bulky sweaters or anything like that that I'd need to worry about layering under this coat. Thx all!

  3. Elaine: You know my measurements, so you can base your choice off me. :) I bought a size 6 lady day without thinsulate and it fits fabulous. It is a bit roomy through the upper body, but the lower half fits, so no gripes on my part. In the past I have had to buy a size 8, so I think they are running a bit big.

Em: I have the Colletta with thinsulate in a size 6 and it is a fab fit, tighter through the torso and flows away from the hips. If I were to have bought the Colletta without thinsulate, I would have bought a 4.

I feel like such a coat horse--I seriously buy way too many each season. I guess since I always re-sell the ones I have worn it the past, it's okay, but still...J. Crew gets me every. single. year.

All you exchange folks may want to watch for next week...I have to go through my coat closet to find something to sell to make up for buying the bonbon coat in orange (yum) this am.

Also, you can use your cardholder 30% off code to save extra, you all. The bonbon went down to around $150 with both promos. ;)

    HTH.

  4. This is a great promo but I have to agree with you Alexis, none of these coats are striking to me so I'll pass on this one. The only one I was remotely interested in is the wool-cashmere icon trench, which has somehow disappeared from the site!

  5. Great promo! I got the lady day coat via the red phone on Friday and its out for delivery today. I hope it fits well. I have wanted it for a while. I also got the yellow double cloth peacoat - I hope the color goes with my skin tone and that it fits
Dinagideon thanks for the review:). I always enjoy reading them.

  6. Is the Coletta warm? It looks and feels like a fall coat to me.

    ReplyDelete
  7. No coats for me. Talbots got my coat money this year and I'm very happy w/the two I got. As far as J Crew, I have the downtown field and would buy it again. It's a great jacket. On one of the other promos I did a recap with links to irl pics. You can click here to check it out.

  8. A: Thank you! :)

The Colletta is warm with thinsulate. Where I live we only need stadium-cloth or thinsulate a few weeks of the year, but during those weeks we are really happy to have!

I actually wore the colletta a few nights ago with a fairly lightweight party outfit (silk taffeta dress and a thin cardigan) and it was warm enough for the 30 degree night we were having.

    Hope that helps!

  9. I've been wanting one of the Stadium Cloth Peacoats, so this may be my chance especially w/my extra 30% deal on my account. Yay!

  10. Hi Elaine... last year's version I needed an 8 tall. I was a 4/6 at the time but always need a 6 in coats. I think an 8 would work fine for you. The lady day is a bit roomier without thinsulate, but I'd still go with the 8, if you wear a 6 in most everything else. I am in the same boat these days and the 8 tall is still working for me, though a bit tight but I blame the thinsulate.

Thanks for the sizing info, dinagideon! Really appreciate it! I need another coat like a hole in the head but I can't resist for $150 (so lame that talls cost more!)

    ReplyDelete
  11. Dina you must be warm blooded and I am cool blooded. I don't find the colletta to be a warm coat. Cute and fashionable, good for fall in NYC but I would be freezing in it in 30 weather! I find it very fitted on top but am on the busty side.

I rebought mine with the promo plus cardholder discount; I have pretty much stopped rebuying stuff when the price goes down because I can't be bothered anymore, and I usually wait for some sort of discount before buying in the first place, but this was an $85 difference so I felt like it would be stupid not to.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think I'll wait this one out and get something after Christmas, when the promos will likely be better on coats (here's hoping, at least!) I definitely want a Lady Day coat someday. This seems to be the most classic of the J.Crew offerings.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Thanks Dina!
I might wait for the after Christmas sale for the Colletta unless the lady day doesn't look good. I keep wanting more coats.

    ReplyDelete
  14. How does the downtown field jacket run? I am a 6 in the stadium-cloth trench and in the Colleta and a 4 in tops. Should I get a small or a medium?
    Thank you ladies!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Does anyone have the stadium-cloth elements coat? Thoughts on the fit and warmth? Thanks!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. I love my purple Lady Day from 2007 but the Coletta looks lovely in the heather twilight.

Can anyone comment on the Coletta fit on someone who is shaped like an inverted triangle? I wonder if the gathers would give too much volume on the bottom since I need to size up to a 10 on top and usually take a 4/6 bottoms. It may be that the Lady Day is a better fit for my shape. Any advice is appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I thought I read that there was to be a mini rollout of new arrivals this morning but I can't see anything new. Maybe I'm just not seeing it. Anyone else see anything new?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Of course now that the (almost) site-wide % off sale is over there's a good-sized update to the sale section. And take care if you jump on anything, certain items are marked Final Sale.

Question 1: what's the difference between the Double Cloth and Stadium Cloth? Which is warmer? And does adding Thinsulate trump it all?

Question 2: I'm pear-shaped (6/P8 on top and 10/P12 on bottom). Would the Colletta fit better than the Lady Day? And should I order P8 or P10 in the coats?

@xoxo: we have the "opposite" body types ;) Oh, and tried and tried to figure out if there was anything NEWER in the New Arrivals section and couldn't figure it out. JC and their site design...

    ReplyDelete
  19. Can we use the 30% off coupon we got as the card member? In that case I think the deal is not bad...basically getting 51% off (30% and then 30% off).

I just bought the Prince of Wales Capella coat yesterday in my local Jcrew store ($179 with 30% off about $126). Want to get some feedback from people as it's cacoon shaped and to me it's a bit more edgy then other practical coat. Is that a good buy?

Also I like the glen plaid puffer jacket. What do you guys think of it?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Re: the Colletta. I tried it on over the weekend and thought it ran big, especially through the waist and hips. I also do not think it would be warm enough to wear as a winter coat in any true winter climate (at least without thinsulate. I have not tried it on with thinsulate).

Closet crisis - the stadium cloth is far warmer than double cloth. IMO it has a nicer, thicker, plusher feel. The double cloth fabric is a bit rough textured.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The Colletta coat runs TTS, IMO. I truly want this coat in Rainforest green, but alas they are out in my size.

I'm going to get the Stadium Cloth Peacoat in Fatigue, The Glen Plaid Trench, and my try the Colletta in Nightfall blue w/ my extra 30% off code.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Closet Crisis, I noticed the Final Sale showing up on a couple of items too. I'm sure Final Sale will be back right after Christmas.

I was really just loading up my cart for fun anyway. This is the week I wrap up all my holiday charity giving so I'm adding what I would spend at J.Crew this week to the charity pot.

I find my Lady Day coat to fall with just a slight A-Line below the waist in my size 10. The Coletta style has a bit more pouf on the bottom in the model shot. Although extra room on the bottom isn't necessarily bad when you're getting in and out of a car.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Is it terrible that I was really wishing this morning's promotion would be % off of sale items? Le sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Closet Crisis, the double cloth has almost a pique texture to it and is not really soft to the touch but it is not itchy at all and I'm very sensitive. Double-cloth is thiner and IMO much dressier than stadium cloth.

As MDPA mentioned, compared to double-cloth the stadium cloth is thicker, warmer and very plush. It has a subtle basket-weave texture, it is not totally smooth like flannel. I wear stadium cloth on all but the coldest days (they require a full-length down puffer) and it keeps me warm on the 20-minute walk between the office and parking, even in the dark depths of winter.

I don't have either with thinsulate but the stadium cloth is very warm on its own. The non-Thinsulate double-cloth is best for spring/fall or those rare warm winter days here in Canada unless you can layer underneath.

  25. OK, so I am NOT complaining AT ALL, but aren't all these promos a bit suspicious? Blah blah blah Mickey hates markdowns and we've seen promo after promo (FINALLY) since Thanksgiving? At the same time they're set to go private and he's set to make a killing? All together, it just seems a little off.... Mayve they are finally getting the message their core customers don't want this stuff? A girl can hope....

I don't need any more coats, but if I had the cardholder discount on top, you bet I'd be buying anyway ;)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Although I too shouldn't be buying any more coats (took advantage of post-Christmas sales in past years), the two discounts stacked together makes it really tempting.

So a request for advice for everyone out there: Would you recommend any of the currently available coats for early/mid-fall weather? I'm talking about times when a light cotton trench is too chilly, but a double-cloth coat is overkill. For me, that's probably the high 50s during the day — you know, when the flannel-lined barn jackets of old would have come out of the closet. Would the rainy day utility coat work (what *is* a "sherpa lining" anyway)? Is the downtown field jacket any warmer than a light cotton trench? Thanks in advance!

    ReplyDelete
  27. @xoxo, MPDA & Wolfy: thanks for your advice! I really don't need any outerwear at the moment, but afraid of Final Sale coming back after Christmas so may just have to order a couple of sizes/styles to try on. Unfortunately there are no Stadium cloth coats offered in Petites, will have to contend with Double Cloth coats, with or without Thinsulate...

Thanks ladies for being so helpful!

    ReplyDelete
  28. lol, i said fkat on top this morning ... meaning flat, not fat. LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  29. oh and Dina is in VA so it doesn't get quite as cold there as in the northeast ... i won't get all that much wear out of a lady day coat here in NC but i've been looking at it for so many years, and it will be nice to have for when i go to NYC. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. This is so off topic, but do J Crew shoes/heels fit TTS? I have the Estella Metallic Espadrilles only, and I think I needed a 7 1/2, but that barely fit yet the 8 was too big. I am usually a 7 1/2 in a TTS shoe. Any thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Has anyone tried the factory tweed carlin coat? I have a thin wool coat current, and am immersed in a Minnesota winter, yet I just can't find a cute coat. I want a waist tie or something feminine looking. Thanks!

  32. I'm bummed I didn't act quickly enough!

If anyone gets and doesn't like the Stadium Cloth Peacoat with Gold Buttons in Navy (item 29667), size 4 or 6, I'll be happy to take it off your hands.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Clicquot, not to rub it in but my Mr. UPS just delivered my stadium cloth peacoat in navy. The WWFIFY service found it for me at the JCrew Corte Madera, 1524 Redwood Highway, CA, 415-927-2005. They did the nicest packing job: tissue on each gold button, sealed in plastic & not a speck of dust on it. (I was worried it would have the 'tried on a million times' look.) Maybe you could call the store & see if they have any more available.

  34. What is the likelihood that some coat stock will be replenished prior to the end of this promo?

I'm going to take the chance to wait it out, and risk loosing the other items I want. I only have 1 30off code dammit!

    ReplyDelete
  35. IRL, you rock!!

I just called the Corte Madera store and had the loveliest SA (Victoria) find me a size 6, take my information, and she's sending it to me up in Canada today!

    Thankyouthankyouthankyou!

  36. A - I usually take S in J Crew for most things, but own the downtown field in XS. Irl pics in this post.

TUMC - I am in a mild climate and rely on layering for microclimate experiences. I.e. overcast & cold, 30 min drive to sunny and mile. However it rarely gets super cold here. I wear the downtown field for spring and fall type days. Probably too hot for 70s, not warm enough for 40s, if I had to guess. I've never tried to get a sweater underneath it and focus on layering *over*. The jacket is weighty in a way, but still thin, and could possibly be layered under a heavier coat. HTH

    ReplyDelete
  37. Elaine, I'm in Canada and still wear my Lady Day and Marie double-cloth coats quite a bit. They definitely don't work when it's really freezing but spring and fall are so cold in the mornings I wear them with a scarf and gloves and by afternoon when it warms up I am happy I didn't wear anything too thick and warm. They are really great transitional coats for colder climates.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Gigi - thank you! You look great in it!

  39. Does anyone know what happened to the Wool-Cashmere Icon Trench(28231)? I was toying with the idea of getting it yesterday but didn't pull the trigger. I looked this morning and it was completely sold out in every color and size. It was available in every size and color yesterday (except camel). Any thoughts on whether it is really gone for good or will appear on a popback?

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Cass: LOL. HeidiG. makes fun of me all the time for being warm-blooded...we call it "running hot."

That said, it is RIDICULOUS here in VA today with the wind chill around 15 or 20 degrees F? (Okay, Canadians, I know that isn't that cold, but I was DYING!) I wore my ebay bought Stadium Cloth Lucinda coat and where my body was covered by the Stadium Cloth, I was in GREAT shape. My head, hands, and feet? Not so much.

If I had been wearing my Colletta with thinsulate I would have been cold; if I had been in my lady day with no thinsulate, I would have been sending sailor speech through the biting wind. People across the bay would have been able to hear my expletives had I not worn my Stadium cloth. :)

  41. Oy Vey, I just pushed through a $889 order. I saved an extra $367 w/ my one one time 30% off code.

Ultimately decided to order now, after speaking to a JC rep. She said that the Rainforest Green is completely sold out for the Colletta coat and the Stadium Cloth Peacoat in Fatigue & Glen Plaid Trench are getting really low and may sell out today.

I don't know if this is an exaggeration or what, but I know the JC fan girls. You need to jump on it or you will regret it.

    $889 got me a
    Glen Plaid Trench
    Stadium-Cloth Peacoat in Fatigue
    Colletta in Nightfall Blue
    the Factory Streamers Cami
Cashmere Fingerless gloves in Dark Cyprus
    2 Timex JC Watches
    3 additional watch bands
    Silk plaid blousanna tunic.

Thank goodness none of this is final sale. Oy!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hi! Can anyone speak to how the Stadium Cloth Peacoats fit? I'm petite, but sometimes the arm length is too short. Does it generally fit TTS? Thanks! :)

It's not the same item # you listed but it's a Cashmere Icon Trench. Not sure if it's the same you are talking about.

    JC Cashmere Trench.

  44. Amanda- I own the Stadium cloth elements coat and I absolutely love it. I bought my normal size 0 and found it fits TTS/ maybe a little big. I wear sweaters and such under with plenty of room. I am very pleased with it. I have worn it a ton and no piling plus I am a sucker for the hood. HTH

  46. Wolfy, two Timex watches, one for each arm? (Bad joke) Love those watches. You should all check out www.toykobayinc.com and the "Charley" watch. It's so reasonably priced ($88) and SO CUTE in person. I got the green one at a local boutique yesterday, loving it. It's a convertible leather band, which is unique, same conversion style as the Timex JC watch.

  47. Sharon

I'm not petite (5'7), but I tried the regular Stadium Peacoat in store many times and found it TTS. It seemed very tailored compared to last year's Peacoat w/ the large lapel.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Charolotte,

Thanks for the heads up, I will check it out. LoL, no I got both the white & black face Timex watches b/c I couldn't make up my mind wish one I like better. W/ my 30% off, the watches were not much more than the ones you mention ($105 each).

    ReplyDelete
  49. Ooh, sorry Drunk. Wrong Trench. My-B.

You can call and see if CS can do a store search. They will also apply the 30% off if they find it.

    ReplyDelete
  50. It may seem strange that the wool-cashmere icon trench sold out since yesterday but the same thing happened with the plaid tuxedo pants. One day there was tons of stock in my size and all sizes were showing. The next day - nothing at all, totally sold out. I did manage to get them on a popback on the weekend and only ever saw one other size pop back during the last promo and I was checking very early every single day.

Maybe the wool-cashmere icon will be back before the end of the promo. I sure hope so for all those who want it.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Grrrrrrrrrr, was supposed to get a package today from my 30% cardholder special and UPS "redirected" my shipment, so it's not until tomorrow. Maybe it will show up with tire treads on it like one of my UPS packages did once. Also got one once with an obvious footprint. Lol.

Wolfy, I like the white face, more classic, less masculine, FWIW.

My package tomorrow will be a cashmere v neck in sunwashed pink, cashmere hat in same color, cashmere short sleeve t in same color, panne velvet weathered wood bell skirt. Gosh, I hope I like the sunwashed pink color, I am hoping it isn't Barbie pink. The rose dust sold out on me. And I hope the panne velvet bell skirt doesn't make me look like a heifer. Moo.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Those Charley watch bands are much more "weathered" looking and less saturated in person as compared to their website picture, like a washed spring green, for example. The face is also gorgeous and not flat, it "catches" light. Can't describe it, but love it. At the boutique I fully expected it to cost $150 or up, when I saw the price tag I was shocked (I actually only paid $79 for it).

    ReplyDelete
  53. Thanks Wolfy and Xoxo. Looks like the trench is sold out for now (but keeping my fingers crossed for popbacks). I did a search on ebay and noticed several available from resellers for about 25% more than the promo and $15 for shipping but not in my size. Not sure but I think this might be a case of resellers grabbing stock at low prices. I hope not but the whole situation seems strange.

  54. Clicquot, you'rewelcomeyou'rewelcomeyou'rewelcome!

    ReplyDelete
  55. The JCA's (myself included) that have seen the wool-cashmere icon trench have commented on how thin it is. For the price, I was expecting something more plush. I wouldn't be surprised if it pops back eventually when people make returns.

Thanks for the link. Holy crap, these guys are based out of my city. I really like women's Basic. It looks very similar to the black JC Timex. I also like the Men's Speed Watch.

Do you know the band size on these watches? Of course I didn't pay that much more than these watches.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I own an early sample version (at least I think it is, same fabric general style but much less of an exaggerated silhouette than the retail version) of the Cashmere Rideau coat and I can vouch for the fabric being AMAZING... it is SO soft and a lovely twill weave. And it is very warm. Now I see it's only left in size 14 but... thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.

Jealous of everyone placing orders, I NEED the glen plaid puffer. NEED it. Sigh...

    ReplyDelete
  58. picked up the bonbon in warm taupe. Hoping it is a winner:)

    ReplyDelete
  59. I ordered the Stadium Cloth Cinema coat yesterday in heathered grey to wear over bulky winter sweaters and blazers in the winter. Crossing my fingers that it fits well and is warm. I love my J Crew coats from past seasons. The Lady Day and Pea coats for fall and Wool-Cashemere Plaza coat in the winter (all of them with thinsulate, I get really cold). In really blustery winter weather my North Face Metropolis Puffer Hood Parka keeps me the warmest, but I can get away with my J.Crew Plaza coat with warm layers if I must have a dressier look.

  60. I stopped by the store to return a pair of terribly defective minnies and ended up buying the Shearling fatigue jacket. They were able to honor the 30% off outerwear so I got it for $139.

  63. Gigi, thanks for the advice re the field coat! Hm, I tend not to layer over jackets, so even though I like it on you, I might need more warmth. I'm still thinking about the rainy-day utility jacket -- I spoke with a hapless rep tonight who finally was able to find out that the "sublime sherpa lining" (seriously, who writes their copy?) is a fleece lining.

Amanda: I too would say the Elements coat runs a bit big. Although I'm more often on the large size of a 4 in coats, I was able to fit into the 2 in the Elements, and I think that if I were to try on a 4 (not available in my store), I'd have an inch or more of overlap in the front if I were to pull it tight. (However, I'm still going to size up because I want room underneath for bulky sweaters and maybe even a down vest for really cold days.)

Re the Colletta: I too found it fairly TTS. Measurements in a size 4: Chest circumference 37", shoulder 15". By comparison, the Boulevard Trench runs 37" chest circumference, 15.25" in the shoulder. Without Thinsulate, I don't think I could wear a double-cloth coat into really cold weather (I think I get chilly in my Madeline when it starts to dip close to 50F overnight).

    ReplyDelete
  64. @ Elaine, I sized up in the Lady Day so I could layer with sweaters under it. I'm usually a 0p or 2p on top, but my lady day is 4p. It fits perfectly with plenty of room for my wide shoulders and for layering but doesn't look oversized.

I didn't get the Thinsulate version and it keeps me plenty warm on Boston winter days.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Chiming in late on the Lady Day--I love mine but it runs small IMO; I could never fit a suit jacket under it.

My part of the country (PNW) doesn't get especially low temps but I "run cold" and always get Thinsulate if it's an option. My 07 double-cloth Town Coat is lovely but its lack of Thinsulate limits it to fall for me.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Wolfy, those are cute watches that you spoke of. The sizing for women is TTS in terms of band adjustments. It should say in the description if it's unisex. I would worry a little about a men's band being too large, but I have freakishly small limbs. (Think Mr. Potato head's body with toothpicks for limbs; it's very attractive.)

  74. Ladies!

Good thing I stumbled onto this site. I need help! I have never bought coats from J Crew before.

I tried on a Cashmere-wool Capella Coat in store (camel). It was a size 6. I thought it was a little too big, but overall, the shape of the coat was very flattering.

I am tempted to purchase the coat online, but can't decide for the love of god which size I should get, a 4 or a 2?

Some info: I normally wear a size 2P in pants at places like Banana Republic and Ann Taylor and XS/S for tops (I have no boobs :P). Since the coat is now Final Sale, I can't exchange it if I get the wrong size. The weather where I'm from can be brutal in the winter...anywhere from 30 to 2 degrees, which means I need to bundle up under the coat, possibly shirt/sweater combo.

Does anyone have this coat? What do you think I should get size wise?

    Thanks in advance!

  75. Tried looking for the Stadium peacoat in retro-orange, sizes 4 or 6, and had absolutely no luck; I would be happy to buy it from someone if they're looking to get rid of it!!
