J.Crew's Red Carpet Alert {part 3}

A big "thanks!" to so many of you who let us know that Good Morning America host, Robin Roberts, ended up wearing J.Crew. As mentioned in earlier posts (refer to here and here), Robin had to select one of three dresses to wear down the Red Carpet to co-host The Official Oscars Red Carpet Pre-Show on ABC.

According to J.Crew's press release (click here or here):

Suze Yalof Schwartz, Executive Fashion Editor-at-Large of Glamour magazine, introduced Roberts to J.Crew's Creative Director, Jenna Lyons. Yalof Schwartz and Roberts met with Jenna and the J.Crew design team at their New York Headquarters to view J.Crew's designs for the perfect Red Carpet look. The taped visit aired on Good Morning America on Wednesday, February 18th. Roberts encouraged America to weigh in to help her choose her Oscar gown. Ultimately, J.Crew was the favorite over two other high profile designers. As of today, over ten thousand GMA viewers had written in sharing their opinions.

Part of J.Crew's Weddings & Parties Collection, Roberts chose the "Gracie" gown in Fresh Tangerine. This special color is part of the fall 2009 Collection and made exclusively for Robin and this Red Carpet occasion. She looked beyond the Red Carpet regulars and chose J.Crew - an unexpected designer for the Oscars, re-confirming that high fashion does not have to cost a fortune. The "Gracie" gown is about sophistication and glamour, carried through in a sleek shoulder-baring gown. The J.Crew designers used dreamy triple-ply silk tricotine and designed a dramatic halter silhouette, offset by a deep-V down the back and a straight skirt that elegantly floats to the floor. Cut slightly longer in back, there are beautiful designer details throughout. Robin also wears J.Crew shoes and accessories including the Organdy Fleur Peep Toe Heels and the Satin Minaudiere Clutch.

Very exciting news for J.Crew! Also, I think Robin looks great in the J.Crew dress. (Although my pick for her was the "Reem Acra's Cobalt Blue Goddess Dress".) :)

What are your thoughts on the dress? Do you think it was the right choice for Robin Roberts to wear for the evening? Did you think she wore the right amount of accessories?

  1. I think she looked H-O-T!!! That color was stunning on her, and I liked the bracelet. I would've gone bigger on earrings maybe and lost the purse. If I had a team following me around, I wouldn't bother with one at all.

  2. I thought she looked great! The color complimented her skin tone....and what about those arms!

  3. She looks great, but her girls are lopsided. A better strapless bra would have been nice, considering it's the Oscars.

  4. Not a fan of the dress. It looks sloppy. She could've done better.

  5. She is recovering from breast cancer, so I say give her girls a break if they aren't perfect looking.

  6. I like the dress on her both shapewise and colorwise, just don't think it's "dressy" enough for Oscars. Instead of "elegant simplicity" feel, I get an "underdressed" vibe. To me -this outfit does not exude power. I think she could have done better.
Sorry, not to offense anyone! Just my personal thoughts.

  7. I read on Slastena's blog that the zebra tee is available in stores in grey now.

  8. The color and style were great on her.

  9. I do think the color is fantastic on her, but I agree with Slastena that it just doesn't seem fancy enough for the Oscars.

  10. I liked the dress a lot & loved the color plus Robin always looks like a million! But it was just not glam enough for the Oscars... sorry J Crew:(

  11. Re: the zebra tee. I went to my local B&M and holy cow, they had gobs of new stuff out. Were they ever busy putting things on the floor. I asked about the zebra tee and the SA laughed and said she has been pulling aside so many of them for her clients who have been contacting her these past few weeks asking about them. I heard her receive a phone call from a client and the zebra tee came up and the SA said yes, she had one waiting for her. So, if you want one, get it before it's GONE. I tried it on and absolutely adore it. Gladly paid $68. Stinks I'll have to handwash, but the entire zebra is covered in sweet sequins so I do need to take care of it. LOVE IT! It's comfy and looks adorable under a blazer with jeans or layered over a l/s tissue tee. My kids adore Madagascar and so they think of Marty the Zebra. Anyway, it's so adorable. I know some have said they don't care for animal prints, but I think the zebra on the grey tee looks so much better than the orange one we saw in an earlier post. Gotta go!

I did not know that, and wouldn't have said that had I known. Glad to see she is healthy and glowing.

Same. I also immediately though, "Uh oh, what's up with the chesticles?"

I'm also glad she's healthy and glowing! What a great thing. :)

I don't get the zebra tee at all. So glad I won't be getting one and looking like everyone else. I think it is such an ugly piece. I do not want to walk around with a zebra of all things on my chest. Even if I was 20 or 30! No way. I tend to stay away from the super hot must have items b/c it seems they quickly go out of style. Plus, with JCrew's quality issues unless the tee is heavier weight I can see holes happening fast weighed down by the sequins. That is fashion...each his own. LOL Zebra tee!!! ya right!

  16. Alexis,

I prefered the navy blue dress as well. While I love JCrew if I had the chance to wear a big designer NO WAY would I pass that up!!! No way!

The color looks fine on her though. I do not like the purple bag with it--unexpected color or not it is not complimentary at all to the dress and does nothing to make a statement in my opinion and I do love love purple in general.

  17. I think Robin looked beautiful, but agree that the gown was not glamorous enough for the Oscars.

  18. I agree it was a very simple gown, perhaps a little too plain for the Oscars on someone who was nominated, but for a reporter I thought it was appropriate. After all, this is basically a jcrew bridesmaid gown (a lovely one at that!). The color was very flattering on RR. Nice to see an image of her clutch and shoes, too.

Just to repeat what I said before there was a post dedicated to the topic:
"I liked the JCrew/RR/Oscar dress, but it isn't really any more 'upscale' than the long silk tricotine gowns they already make... the color and style are consistent with other JCrew special occasion dresses. I also agree that it was part of ABC making a conscious effort to showcase a dress at a lower price point."

  19. Plain and simple can be lovely but this gown is not Oscar appropriate...it needs to make more of a statement! Overall, I think it was a poor choice for the Oscars. For another, less dramatic event it would be lovely.

  20. Robin is a stunning woman, and I thought the dress was lovely on her. I felt she could have used stronger accessories maybe. A broach or a necklace? This was true of lots of ladies at the Oscars - there seemed to be a decidedly minimalist vibe. I think it is a product of the economic times - excessive displays of wealth are kind of shied away from. Personally, I like to see the stars decked out - bling it on, I say!

  21. I thought that Robin looked great and agree that there was a conscious effort to appeal to 'regular women' by wearing a dress that they can relate to, both style & price. She is a reporter, not an actress, so the starving for a week, nip/tucks, $10K+ frock madness is not necessary. In fact, I think the E! reporters overdo it. While the other dresses were lovely, I don't think they reflected Robin's style. I would've liked to see a stronger earring on her, though, but she looked at ease and confident, as opposed to some of the more fancily dressed ladies on the red carpet.

  22. I thought it was beautiful on her, just right. Great color and sends a better message than the high-end lust promoted by most of the "stars." Remember when Sharon Stone wore the short sleeved Gap turtleneck to the Oscars?

  23. She looked great, but she could have looked *stunning* in a more structured dress. I don't fault her for having imperfect breasts, but that kind of dress only highlights every lump, bump, and asymmetry, because the fabric doesn't hide anything. I think a silk halter dress in that same melon color would have been much better. She looked great though. Definitely an awesome color for her.

  24. I agree about the earrings, but maybe there was a wardrobe issue at the last minute and she went with none. I think understated was part of the plan..."these economic times," etc...
