Think the FS codes are great, however they still have a lot of FiSa items that are more online than they were in the store..? Perhaps we will see a KISS, LOVE, or HEART code offering an extra % off this week...? What do you think? One can be optimistic, no? :)
Noticed there has not been an update of FS today..? Would like to use the coupon codes, but would be even better if you could stack the Free Shipping on top of it.
Anon @ 1:09 - I saw the dress on ebay as well, and considered having it altered... but the price is a bit steep, so I'm going to hold out and wait for a bit. Thanks for letting me know! :-)
Hopefully they'll have a real free shipping code. I'm needing a couple things but nothing totaling $150 or more...I don't want to spend extra money to get the things I want. Let's hope we do get a % off code this week!
Marietta - I just saw your post and I'm in your boat too. I love that abstract rose (strapless) dress and I'd love if someone had a size 0 available. I know it probably won't happen but it's worth a try.
I thought I saw a size 4 on ebay this week. If it's still available you could always try and alter it.
I would love to see a code too but I doubt we will as there was just one recently. I think the free ship codes are all that will be going around...esp. since they just reduced a bunch of spring items. That is the Valentine's special! The also posted the email and little sign about Valentine's Day ordering by date around the same time.
I would tend to agree with you but to buy if from the website you might be able to use a student/educator discount, which would bring the abstract rose dress down to $51 and if you ordered it with other items, you could get yourself free shipping.
My point is I think the seller is reasonable in terms of her pricing. 59.99 + 10 (tax and shipping) + 10 (ebay/paypal fees). I think she just wants to at least recover her cost.
BTW, I am not the seller. Just do not like certain tone on the blog, every ebay seller is greedy.
I would consider purchasing the dress for $79.99 (+ shipping), if I didn't have to have it altered, which could be another $20.... so, I'll wait for now and hope to find one either for a better deal, or my actual size. Thanks all!
There is still a lot of fs winter items that I would think they would want to move out- FSale usually phases out in February..or at least did last year. Think we might see one or at least more items reduced. One can hope!
I go back and forth a lot over whether it's better to get something on eBay versus putting up with the FS bs. I find that eBay is THE place to go for deep discounts on used JCrew items. I know some people don't like buying used but I don't mind it. I've scored 3 gorgeous like-new coats for $80, knee-high leather boots for $30, a pants suit for $40, etc, etc.
But lots of times it works out better cost-wise to buy from the site, especially with the educator discount, because if it doesn't work out at least I can always put it up for sale on the Weekly Exchange here and make back the money I spent.
Anyway just some more 2 cents from someone who LOVES buying JCrew on eBay. Anon 5:44, I feel the anti-eBay tone too, but I think most people are miffed at the high-volume resellers who are making a business out of it.
Oh and I wanted to second what 5:44 mentioned about the eBay/PayPal fees. For those who have never sold on eBay, eBay gets 5% of the final selling price (plus whatever it cost to list the item to begin with), then PayPal gets 5%. It really adds up.
(Again, thank goodness for the Weekly Exchange. This really is a great place!) :)
Isn't that dress sold out? I guess the problem isn't what price I'm wanting to pay ($59.99 + 15% off + free shipping), it's unavailable! :( I need a size 10.
Anon @ 241: I also got that Forbidden page yesterday but it went away and then came back and then went away. I just took it as a sign to save my money.
Re: student discount and THIS free shipping offer, I don't think you'll be able to combine the two because the free shipping is a "global" promo not like the previous free shipping codes for final sales. Just a heads up to double check that before you get your hopes up about it. In some cases using your student promo alone saves you a tad more money than the free shipping. (Like a dollar or two.. but you can check the math.)
And re: ebay: I sell on ebay but I'm not a reseller and so i find it to be helpful once no one on the weekly exchange claims my items, now i can offer it up to the rest of the world. I however am not one of those people are marks up the prices. I sell it at what i spent or less to get the bids running. If the price ends up beyond what i bought it, its all because the bidders drove that price up on their own.
it also sucks that paypal and ebay take their cut but it beats having a ton of stuff in your closet just sitting there because you're not wearing it. it makes me happy when my items find happy homes!
Hi Alexis, I wanted to tell you that your blog has been a great resource! I'm a journalism student, and I was assigned a story about the state of apparel retail during the recession, and was able to do a lot of great research thanks to your blog! I like that you include news articles and the links to them, which helped a lot. Keep up the good work!
I think Ebay celebrates the spirit of a free market, IMHO. I don't like to knock it, because then we would knock companies like J.Crew for charging $55 for a tee shirt, or $500 for a leather bag. It's all the same. We're the buyers and as long as someone is willing to pay for the item, they get their item. I guess if someone listed their item too high and no one believed that it is worth it, no one would buy it. Sorry for a long post- I do get excited by last minute bidding! :)
Marietta, I would hold out for the right size, I don't think this is a dress that is easily altered. There is the actual bodice, plus the inner bodice that is seamed at different points than the outer bodice, plus the boning. It would be a complex alteration.
Yeah, I echo Desert Flower's thoughts. It's got an inside bodice/corset thingy, and is lined, so it will be an alterations nightmare. I'm sure a size 2 will pop up! :)
Hi, I do have the rose abstract dress NWT listed on polyvore to sell in sz 8. I have the price at $140 because that is what I paid for it. Not that I have to jusify that but I don't want anyone to think I'm "reselling". Abstact Dress.
I got the abstract rose skirt at the B&M a while back and am wearing it for one of my Valentine's Day dates.
The skirt is amazing, if you find it on Ebay or anywhere else. A silk/wool blend, cut on the bias. Runs big.
My other Val Day/Val week outfit will be the Silk Twill Vionette in graphite. Ooooh. Old-World elegant, like the grey silk suit my Mom got married in in 1950.
Hey, Alexis. How about Valentine's day outfits for a topic?
Hi, here's what I got from TJmaxx yesterday. Some of you have expressed interest in these items, so please let me know which item you want and your email address. Sorry I couldn't report back earlier. My baby's sick.
Each item is $19.99. Plus tax is $21.58. Some of you offered $10 shipping. That makes $31.58 a piece.
- Chiffon pleated cardi M and XL in putty, S and L (2) in navy. Golden roses skirt size 6 & 10 - Lulu leather flats, 9, yellow
I checked before purchasing and these items seem perfect without any flaws. Was worried that with such cheap prices, there's something wrong with them. I still don't understand how they ended up at TJmaxx.
TIA about ebay and paypal fees. I never used to factor in these fees when I was a buyer but now that I've started selling some pieces from my closet, ouch! I can barely recover the money I paid for the items.
OT.... I just noticed that the double-cloth coats are now NINETY-NINE DOLLARS! Couldn't believe my eyes. Madeline, Lady Day, and also Plaza are just $99, even with thinsulate! amazing.
(And yet I think I got a better deal by using the extra30 plus my student discount a few weeks ago.)
about ebay... If you've bought something and worn it, or even if it's been sitting in your closet for awhile, you aren't entitled to get all your money back! That is what you get for wearing it, it being not current, or buying something you don't get use out of! I think it's ridiculous that people try to get all their money back, or expect that they do! You aren't entitled to get it all back, so I don't feel bad about you having to pay fees to ebay or paypal. That's what you get for making a bad purchase decision (or if you did wear it, some cost should be deducted as you did get to use the item!)
Anon @ February 8, 2009 11:33 PM: Is the Golden roses skirt sz 10 still available? If so I'd be interested. My email is amurkas AT yahoo DOT com. Thanks! Annette

In the past J.Crew has offered promos for Valentine's Day so hopefully we will see one this week.
ReplyDeleteOT - but if anyone has the strapless abstract rose print dress in size 2 that they'd like to part with, or happen to magically find....

kinda high to begin with, imo, but you could have altered

After 9 days of successfully using JCrew's site I got the dreaded FORBIDDEN again.
ReplyDeleteWhat a mess JCrew has on its hands.
If this keeps up I can see them easily going under...

ReplyDeleteAnon 9:34 - I am SO hoping for a code this weekend - it's President's Day AND Valentine's day. THINK SALE!
ReplyDeletemarietta,
ReplyDeleteI totally understand. I've been scouting the website for the same dress in my size (8).

I think the abstract rose dress is about 59.99 on jcrew. plus shipping and tax. 79.99 sounds reasonable to me.

Ebay: 79.99 + 6 (shipping) = 86
it can get pricey...
just my two cents.

ReplyDeleteMelanie,
ReplyDeleteThat's music to my ears... Hopefully that means that if no one bought them, they'll be up on the website on an upcoming update. : )
I just called the stores and they said the dresses sold out because some stars were seen wearing them. Awwww schucks!
ReplyDeleteWho's the star who wore the dress?
ReplyDeleteAddison from Private Practice/Grey's Anatomy
ReplyDeleteI love her!! I have red hair like hers. :) Ok, if any of you ladies see a 6, can you please let me know too? Thanks girls :)
