A big "thanks!" to Summer here I come! (in this post) who offered a great post topic: "to discuss past seasonal items that we hope they'll bring back". I think we all have a list of items we would love to see J.Crew bring back. :) Maybe someone at J.Crew will see our "wish lists" and offer them again! ;)
Memories of season's past... There are so many fantastic pieces that I would love for J.Crew to bring back. In fact, most of the items shown in the image above make my list. First, I love to get the Bella Coat back. I have it in black (and should have also gotten it in white). ;)
Second, I still want the Stadium-Cloth Toggle Coat from last year. I ordered the black version and was wait listed for 5 months before they out right canceled it on me. (I was beyond upset as I could have purchased the other colors that were available at the time. Oh well!) :(
I also love, love, love the library print dress. I know that this print was not universally loved- it was more of a "love or hate" kind of print among the Aficionadas. ;) I also adore the green studio ball skirt shown in the Paris image. There is just something lovely in that particular shape & length, that I haven't seen in the recent versions.
What are your top picks for items you would like for J.Crew to bring back? What are some of the reasons behind those selections? And for fun, what item(s) would you not like to see return? :)
Suede Pointy Toe Penny Loafer Flats!!
ReplyDeleteDon't know the cute JCrew name, but I had these in tan and green and they were SO cute and comfortable too. I wish I had bought all the colors! I literally wore my pairs into the ground.
Great topic!
Campo de Fiori print. Oh gosh I'm obsessed with this print...
ReplyDeleteI've never commented before so I apologize if I don't follow up on this later... I'm not sure what you mean by "last year" with the stadium cloth toggle coat (as in sometime 2008 or maybe even 2007?) but I received this coat in navy as a gift in Oct/Nov. 2008 from the J.Crew outlet at Woodbury Commons. I didn't even know it was in the regular retail stores!
ReplyDeleteIt is the outlet brand and the season is Holiday 2008.
More of this past season's Cambridge cardigans, they are so soft and light! I want more subtle colors though, the brights were a bit much.
ReplyDeleteAlso, from the year before, the 3/4 sleeve cable cardigan, Wellesley maybe ? It was the thin one, not the thick scratchy one. I wish I'd stocked up, I've only got one.
Alexis, I'm so with you about the toggle coat (I loved it in yellow!) and especially the bella
ReplyDeletejacket! When it came out, I was in grad school and it was way out of my price range (not that it was inexpensive otherwise...) but grrr, I totally kick myself whenever someone mentions it or whenever I see it on someone!
Also, I'd LOVE for them to bring back some variation of the Lexington coat. It was so chic! I still get tons of compliments on it--and several people thought it was something much pricier (eg, Chanel).
I love the library and campo de fiori prints! I wish I was JCrew obsessed back when they came out because sadly I don't own either!
ReplyDeleteThe bella jacket (in wool)! I still haven't gotten over that particular "one that got away." And would it be too much to ask for more tall sizes?
ReplyDeleteI love J. Crew's dainty, feminine sweaters but I wish they'd offer at least one thicker, warmer, more practical sweater during the winter months. Why not bring back their famous roll neck sweater in an updated fit?
ReplyDeleteThis isn't about a particular item, but I loved that catalog that you posted the pictures from--the photo shoot that took place in the library.
ReplyDeleteBut yes, bring back the wool bella coat! the ecole (and others) just aren't the same...!
double-strand enamel frog necklace!
ReplyDeleteBring back some style! The stuff in the store is so boring. What happened to all the cool prints? Did you fire all of the cool stylists with good ideas?
ReplyDeleteThe white lobster dress. Seriously. I don't own it but I would love to have it this summer. If not that there was a similar shape dress without pattern. Just different colors on the empire waist band and straps. So adorable!
ReplyDeleteParachute pants :)
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what I want. I want the jackie cardigan. The original jackie cardigan!! Back when they used to be part cotton and part cashmere! Incredibly soft! Now they're kind of stiff and all cotton. I'm bummed. I think the last time they were cotton/cashmere was summer of 2007 after that the Jackie became all cotton, I haven't bought a single Jackie cardigan since then.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Dina- I want the old Jackie back- it fit so much better.
ReplyDeletefun post : ) my list:
ReplyDelete- Bella (coat and blazer)
- Piazza jacket
- more Cotton-Linen Ottoman fabric (not a huge fan of the Audrey shape, but love the fabric)
- the Holiday 06 long-sleeved brushed cotton thin robe that I am wearing right now! LOVE it.
I wish they would make more prints like they use to. It seems to me they have stopped offering as many cool scarves and hair accessories.
ReplyDeleteLOVE that green skirt from fall 2007. I own it and every time I wear it I get lots of compliments.
Also love their plaid stuff. They seem to have gotten away from that also.
Site has been updated with new arrivals:)
ReplyDeleteI own everything that came in the library print. I love it:)
Julie
Yay! Like I said when I suggested the topic-
ReplyDeleteThe no hassle headscarfs in tons of prints!
Whoever mentioned that they don't have as many prints now as they used to is so right... and what I love about JCrew is their prints!
Also, I wish they would make some true seersucker stuff. Like seersucker bermudas or seersucker pants. None of this stuff that's sorta kinda like seersucker in greys and navys. Lets have some pretty seersucker in clear bright colors!
Lastly, Kathleen02, I agree, I DO have the lobster dress and it's one of my favorite items! I love the material it's made out of, the cut of it, and everything! It's just a fun cool (and by cool I mean cooling, not making you hot) dress!
OMG OMG OMG!!!!
ReplyDeleteSo I finally decided to get another suit, I just love the Super 120s suits, I have it in black and grey pinstripe, so I decided to get the navy pinstripe.
Anyway.........I figured I'd use the free shipping code that was listed, IRW-989. I call, and Diane is the customer service agent, she takes my order asks me to verify my email address, then says, "student email address?" and I said, "yes" and she says, "let me apply that discount" so I got my student discount and free shipping.
I thought they weren't supposed to do that?
The March catalog is up
ReplyDeleteI would bring back the sweather with the side-button up tutleneck and kangaroo pocket, but in cashmere instead of lambswool.
Celtic Country Herringbone Jacket
That one salt-n-pepper bella-type herringbone blazer
A longer version of the Porta jacket
Toggles and leather buttons
The plain and cute critters like they were originally instead of the ones they have now
I would agree with Campo de Fiori (it was in Confessions of a Shopholic) and the fish dresses they do in the summer. I know it won't be summer but I miss the cashmere intarsia critters -- nothing this year. I wear my other ones all the time with pride.
ReplyDeleteI also miss the beautiful silk scarves. I love the jewelry line now. The bracelets are divine. They are expensive but you simply cannot touch the workmanship elsewhere without spending a mint.
I would love to see some suede Paris ballerinas again. They were the most comfortable and long lasting shoes (the current plastic insert needs to die a slow and painful death -- shoes prior to 2008 were all leather lined).
The Bella coat in linen would be lovely for summer: shell, chiffon and light pewter.
Stuff is up! I'm on the west coast...and it went up awhile ago. Pretty things. I like the ruffled scoopneck tee (hopefully it doesn't run large like every other knit thing) and the Whitney dress. It is soooo pretty. Alas I have nothing to wear it to. I so want to try it on though.
ReplyDeleteDina,
ReplyDeleteYes, you can get free shipping and your student discount. You cannot get your student discount if the promo is global like the 20% off everything that was a few weeks ago...it included regular and sale item.
Yay! New clothes online! Too bad I'm not thrilled with most of them, but love some of those new shoes!! Pricey but pretty!
ReplyDeleteUm, atomic flower necklace? What in the world? I'm just going to assume that it looks better IRL....
And yeah, I totally agree that JC needs to bring back some more prints!
I wish they would bring back the critters. I miss them so much...on the skirts, pants, and shorts.
ReplyDeleteI don't even take a second look at the ones they have now. No thanks.
Also, bring back quality cashmere that does not pill or lower the price DRASTICALLLy on the crap they are selling now.
Also, bring back quality leather lined/soled shoes. I won't buy the man made crap. I honestly cannot believe that people pay $118 for cheap flats from JCrew.
Sort of OT, but I have a question:
ReplyDeleteCan anyone comment on the fit of the new Pleated Tissue top? Is it comparable to the Luxe Knit items? Those seemed to run really big... I have an xs in one of those..
Thanks.
You can also browse the new catalog online. The "Jenna's Picks (Yes, she's for real)" page cracked me up - so people think she's not real?
ReplyDeleteI would adore the green studio ball skirt, in the Eiffel Tower image. I agree, the 26-inch length was a welcome change, the silk taffeta gave it shape and elegance. Don't know how I missed out. Have been hoping for something similar, to no avail, ever since.
ReplyDeleteIF ANYONE HAS SUCH A SKIRT and is tired of the length (or never wore it after all), I would be delighted to buy it and give it a home!! [Any color, size 8, contact yarnscholar at yahoo dot com.]
I would love some "cooler" colors besides pewter ... the orange/yellow/beige palette beloved by Jenna is SO DIFFICULT for many people to wear without looking corpse-like.
ReplyDeleteEven the jewelry is yellow! And seriously, what is with that atomic flower necklace? Sheesh!
Substantial weight sweaters, and more color options other than pewter, navy, putty and white.
ReplyDeleteStraight leg jeans that flatter curves.
This is the first time I skimmed the new arrivals page in less than 5 min and spent 0.00. Hoping for a better summer rollout in April and May.
I agree with ALexis' picks... Bella coat (wish I would've gotten the yellow) and Library print stuff. I have the Library print dress but want the skirt, too.
ReplyDeleteI think I just loved the "Doll Dress" style, which they made in several different fabrics/colors.
And I agree wholeheartedly with everyone who said brighter colors. Spiced mustard... regal purple... I own many items in these colors and they are just gorgeous. The paler colors are just eh.
Oh and flannel lined chinos that aren't so boring. My old ones have cute prints on the inside. They definitely need to bring back the prints!
i still kick myself for missing the collection tulle cascade skirt from last spring, and also the silver crackle mary janes from an autumn or two ago -- they were so gorgeous, but i stupidly thought they were "too high" for me...now that i've (somewhat) learned to deal with 3-4" heels, i am truly kicking myself.
ReplyDeletethe green studio ball skirt is gorgeous alexis, love the color! i have the library print baby doll dress and it's very nice (runs sooo small though and the library cardigan; i sort of wish i had gotten the accompanying charm bracelet too!
Em,
ReplyDeleteI agree with bring back flannel lined chinos with cute print linings. I get some many compliments on my ones from years ago! This years were very plain and a pass for me.
Goldenmeans,
I found the library print baby doll dress ran true to size all the way. All my JCrew dresses are size 8 and that is saying a lot as I have many!
I loved the Montauk Charlie jacket. I was waitlisted forever; kept received postcards with updated shipping dates, and then it just disappeared -- they cancelled it! I stalked it on ebay, found a larger size; ordered it, but it is really just too big. This is the item that got away....
ReplyDeleteI had a black velvet Bella on backorder for a few months and then JCrew cancelled it....so sad:( Would love another Bella like jacket. The ecole was horrible fitting and too basic for my tastes anyway.
ReplyDeleteI would like the small ruffle shirt back. The pre-Victoria version. Smaller ruffles make it easier for those not use to ruffles to wear them.
ReplyDeletePLEASE bring back the shift beach dress from 2007. Not the low back version from last year that made me look pregnant.
ReplyDeleteI want the Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany's, hourglass one from 2007 that I get complements on every time I wear it. I can't tell you how many people on my last trip to NYC asked me where I got it.
I would, however, request spring colors instead of just blue, black, red, white, etc. That would cause me to buy it up.
It kills me to this day that I didn't snag the Double-Cloth Grace Coat from Fall/Winter '06.
ReplyDeletehttp://forestfromtrees.blogspot.com/2006/12/one-that-got-away.html
The peter pan collar, the flap pocket, and the leather buttons...I mourn you every winter!
I too agree that they need to bring the toggle coat back. I loved how last year's had white toggle string closures, which looked gorgeous against the navy and yellow.
J.Crew, I hope you're paying close attention to this post!
I agree about bringing back the roll neck sweater for women, with an updated, streamlined fit. I'm pretty sure they brought it back for the men last year, I remember seeing it and reminiscing (I still own a men's XS from the mid 90s).
ReplyDeleteColors too! That may be the season that we're in though, the bright colors are always out for xmas/winter and summer.
The Suzannah Cami in new colors and the Parisian Mary Janes.
ReplyDeleteAlexis,
ReplyDeleteDo you have the catalog to post? I find that the older ones are more inspirational, and this one in particular had creative combinations. I would love to look at it again to get some ideas.
Thanks
I miss their thick wool sweaters from the 90s. Long sleeves with the foldover cuffs. I still have a couple of wool/angora (I think) sweaters that I bought in middle school (!!) that were big on me back in the day and fit fine now and look classic enough to wear to this day.
ReplyDeleteOne of the sweaters is finally going to be retired and I desperately want to replace it. I don't mind the thinner sweaters but I wish J.Crew would offer a thicker wool option that isn't cashmere.
I would also love to see the Perfect Patent pumps rolled out in spring/summer colors again. Also a note about CURRENT stuff -- just noticed the Juliets on sale for $80 in several desirable colors, including Bright Peacock, which I know some JCAs were looking for. Extra 20% off!
You know what I'd die for? A rugby top in awesome stripes. It's been awhile. Damn those things are nice on a Saturday.
ReplyDeleteI have a nomination: THE BEAUTIFUL SYBIL COAT from last winter. Sublime tailoring and such pretty colors (I bought the burnished yellow). I wish they brought it back in other colors. That would be divine.
ReplyDeleteI own the controversial library dress. It is quite pretty in person and worn with a cardigan, it is perfect for my work (I teach).
I also have on my blog pics from the Paris Catalog. There are only about 6 images (and not super high-quality), but it may bring back some memories for you ladies. I do plan to continue uploading pics from various catalogs, but it depends on my schedule.
You can find the pics if you click on my name, then my blog's name, and then look in early February for the title "My obsession, the Paris Catalog." Have fun reliving memories.
Anon at 8:00 - Was the Montauk Charlie the madras jacket with dark blue buttons and a rounded collar? If so, I have one in a 0 that I was going to take in to consignment. It would also fit a 2. Email me if you're interested!
ReplyDeletemarcyshelden@gmail.com
-more substantial sweaters (not boxy or bulky, just not so thin!)
ReplyDelete-28 or 29 INCH INSEAM PETITE PANTS!!! PLEASE!
- women's loafers that are as structured as the men's (but not as big/clunky etc.). I have a pair from almost 10 years ago that I still wear. the driving mocs have no structure and wear out quickly!
I love, love, love, love the Stadium-cloth Toggle Coat from last year. I have it in navy and it never fails, every time I wear it, someone asks me where I got it b/c they want it! It is my everyday coat and I love it.
ReplyDeleteIt's kind of strange but I've never seen anyone else wearing one in the past year since I've had it.
Oops, sorry, I mean the toggle coat from 2007. I don't think they had one in 2008.
ReplyDeleteI do NOT want to see anything like the patent Lucido coat back (ugh!!), or the argyle floor length cashmere skirt-- that was kind of odd. I did like the cashmere argyle tunic/dress from the Paris catalog, though.
ReplyDeleteHello, everyone! I agree with many of the comments so far-- the Bella jacket/coat (love the idea of a summer Bella!), the Lexington jacket, even the good ol' marled wool roll-necks! :)
ReplyDeleteOne more item though, that I saw a woman on the street wearing just a couple of weeks ago, and that I immediately thought "d'oh! shoulda bought that back in the day!!!" is an overcoat with large black and gray horizontal stripes. It was about 3/4 length and double-breasted (i think), and from 2007 (again, i think!). I don't remember the name of the coat, but I'm sure someone here does! Anyway, it looked SO FAB on--super duper chic!--and I wish I had realized how unique and timeless it would be and snapped it up when I had the chance!!!
I'd like to add my vote for bringing back the Bella jacket. I'd also like to see the dream tie cardigan in more colors. I have one in navy and I could wear it every day.
ReplyDeleteNichi,
ReplyDeleteyes, the embossed cotton shift beach dress from a couple years ago is so much better than the newer version. It has an actual, defined waistline which is nice, as opposed to the trapeze-y style of the new version.
I miss the fabulous prints they would roll out in january that would almost sell out immediately-like the San Remo print (of which I snagged the short sleve top that gets me millions of complements)or the Campo De Fiori prints of which i snagged the silk cami that i LOVE with a cardi and can't wait to wear again soon!! They aren't doing prints like they used to- they used to be so WOW! and now they're just....boring...like that new Fresco print.
ReplyDeleteI'll echo all the wishes for bringing back the Bella herringbone jackets. I love my azalea Bella.
ReplyDeleteI liked the library print, unfortunately neither the poofy skirt nor the babydoll dress are, style-wise, my cup of tea, so I didn't get anything in it. But I think the picture of the model in the dress standing on the banks of the Seine is just divine.
Which brings me to this point: Bring back all of the Paris catalogue :-) It was just fantastic.
I would also like to see more petite 0 again! I don't mind if the pants run long, but the 0 is simply too big for me... on everything, but specially on pants and blouses. Not much of a problem with sweaters, cardigans and tees. Please, J Crew, add at least a 00 or a P0 if you don't want to have the entire petite sizing
ReplyDeleteFor those in a nostalgic mood: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lD_YpIm6728
ReplyDeleteAnon @9:37: There are some pants currently available online in Petite 00. The Saturday pants are also available in regular 00 in the store. :)

ReplyDeleteI have a jcrew coat *exactly* like the stadium cloth toggle coat, but it is from around 2000-01 and is light blue.... I don't remember if it was called the same thing back then. It has thinsulate and I'm pretty sure it is numbered by letter (S as opposed to a 2). It's great for cold winter days.
ReplyDeleteSo, Alexis, if it was around back then, and again last year, maybe it will pop up again in future seasons!

ReplyDeletenumbered = sized. :P
ReplyDeleteThis is the greatest topic ever!
ReplyDeleteI'd love J Crew to bring back button-front (or snap-front) corduroy shirts, in all the colors they do so well in their corduroy pants. Also, basic wool sweaters in the $48-68 range in great heathers and marls. Also (am I insane?) the barn jacket. Other companies make similar ones that look dowdy. J Crew's was so much better, somehow, and I bet they'd find some really good ways to update it. (Bright colors/critter lining, leather collars, cloth-covered buttons anyone?)
My favorite J Crew item ever was the Japanese ringspun denim they made in fall '05. I still have two pairs of those jeans, and treat them like heirlooms. Bring back size 35 jeans!
Also, I'm thinking fondly back to the photo in the catalog years ago that featured (I think) a woman standing around in a button-down while a man in the background ironed her pants - bring back the humor, and the real-life scenes!
I agree with the wishes for the return of the Bella!
ReplyDeleteI also regularly wear my Hipslung denim and wish they'd bring them back. None of the other styles fit me quite as well.
I also love the patterned dresses they used to have from as recently as last summer with the cross backs. I love a good cross-back top or dress, and they used to do them fairly frequently...
THE ROLL NECK WOOL SWEATER. Oh how I miss thee. This glorious item is what started my J. Crew love affair thirteen years ago. I would LOVE another one. Also- non leather bags/purses (aside from the beach totes). I have several bags from years ago made of corduroy and cotton and velvet that I adore. I wish they would make them again. My favorite is an orange corduroy embroidered all over with yellow critter bumblebees. Bring back the critters!
ReplyDeleteSpring/Summer 2007, JCrew made these egyptian crew neck sweaters with 3/4 length sleeves (81981). The cuffs of the sleeves were a bit elastic as was the bottom of the shirt... I'm so not describing it well, but.. it was sooooooooo flattering (great for hiding a little stomach pounch), comfortable, substantial, and easily dressed up or down. There was something like the top last fall, but not quite the same. I think I maybe paid 35 bucks for each one on sale, but it was SO WORTH IT.
ReplyDelete(Sorry, got excited there. Wish they'd come back)
the Jcrew outlets at Woodbury, Flemington and Tinton Falls are great if you're on the east coast. I've gotten quite a few great deals on Jcrew favorites!
ReplyDeleteMore bug pins!!! Bigger, buggier!!
ReplyDeleteOT: will outlet stores ship out an item? I saw on another blog that the outlets have last year's canvas Fiona jackets and I want one!
ReplyDeleteTIA!!!
Hillary,
ReplyDeleteyes! they should totally update the rollneck. I purchased one in 2003 (give or take a year), haven't seen them for women since. It was updated a bit-- wool/silk/cashmere blend, slightly slimmer fit but still slouchy, in a silvery ice blue. It's so soft and comfy, and just the right thickness.
Paper Bag Princess-- LOL!!!!! I don't know if you were being serious or not, but either way your comment made me giggle. Thanks! :)
ReplyDeleteI know they are still making them, but I hope they continue to make argyle sweaters. I LOVE them (hence my name.)
ReplyDeleteI know someone already said they didn't like it, but I really wish I would have gotten the floor length argyle skirt and the sleeveless dress. I think the skirt would have looked fantastic for a nice dinner with a crisp white shirt. If anyone comes across either in a medium, I would love to have them.
You know what I really loved? Does anyone remember the brief time the tissue tees had a seam running down the back? This was... maybe five years ago or so. I have them in brown, grey, and black, and I swear they are still some of my favorite tees. Please bring them back J Crew! They are perfect. :)
ReplyDeleteJ. Crew should bring back the original Cambridge Cable sweaters from 2004 or so. I am not sure if they were called that then but they are the perfect merino blend sweater. Never pills, perfect thickness. Rollnecks would be good too. Bella jacket, because I didn't get one the first time, waited too long for a good sale. My husband misses the striped rugby shirts and the fisherman handknit sweaters.
ReplyDeleteargyle mini,
ReplyDeleteI love argyle, too! I think my biggest problem with the floor length skirt was that it most likely would need some sort of alteration because (I think) it only came in one length. Also, being a shorty, I am preconditioned to be suspicious any skirt that goes past my knee, hehe. :)
But I kick myself now for not snatching up the argyle mini dress/tunic! That was great.
I second the posting of old catalogs, I'm sort of a JCrew newbie, and would love to see some of the 2007 catalogs, especially fall/winter 2007, for inspiration.
ReplyDeleteIs there anyway we could have a catalog of the month post or something of that sort =)?
I loved the vintage violet print, and wished I had the money to get the coat at the time it came out.
Dear j.crew...
ReplyDeleteThis is not a bring back comment, but rather some things i think j crew should consider.
First, free shipping to your card holders. The shipping costs are out of control and completely over inflated. Banana gives free shipping to card holders and it's time j crew jumps on this wagon. Many times I’ve hesitated on purchases b/c i can't fathom spending $20+ on shipping.
Second, I think they should let you "save" your shopping bag and have a "save for later" option when placing an order.
Also they could send out personal emails when something in your shopping bag goes on sale (or inventory gets dangerously low!) to encourage checking out.
Not that I need anything to encourage my jcrew shopping addiction, but I think these things would be great.
Heather,
ReplyDeleteI have the exact same blue shade in the roll neck sweater and a cream one from that year too. I just sized down and I have a nice snug fit that looks great and I still wear all the time. Love my two sweaters and oh so soft!
I loved the library print too, but that dress was so so awful on me. I wish they would bring back the School of Fish print. I have the orange skirt and blue dress but would love more pieces.
ReplyDeleteSpectator Peep toes and Patent pumps, especially in dusty rose!! I missed out last season :(
ReplyDeleteAnony@12:54
ReplyDeleteI have the same orange skirt. Yes, where are the pretty and unique prints this season? I don't see any????
I'd love JCrew to bring back the pointed toes kitten heels from 3-4 years ago. Does anyone remember these lovelies? They came in a colorful assortment of flannel, tweed, suede and even metallic leather.
ReplyDeleteThese shoes were so pretty and comfortable. They also looked great with everything from jeans to skirts, even shorts! JCrew, please give us some pointed toe kitten heels!
LL
Another release of the spectator pump from this past season. The gray was perfect and I missed the boat.
ReplyDeleteITA(!) with anon on free shipping to card holders. I realize it takes money to house the items and have employees to ship it, but maybe free shipping on Final Sale? Or fres shipping on $150 or more at least once/month. SOMETHING.
Jackie from DC: Are you referring to the Striped Town Coat from Fall '07? I was lucky enough to get one! One of my favorites.;)
ReplyDeleteDear J. Crew,
ReplyDeletePlease bring back quality. Just read posts from this blog and you'll read all the problems we've had (I mean honestly, Italian made shoes with man made soles costing $200+?)
I second, third, etc. comment regarding free/flat shipping for account holders. As a tall person who also has only one B&M with limited items, I have no choice but to order from the website. The story about the person who could not combine free shipping for her bathing suit items with the 20% on the sale items at first didn't bother me one way or another (and I believe she had over $150 of merchandise if I remember). Then I thought, why treat loyal customers like that? It seems more work in the warehouse to process two or three separate orders rather than allow the combination of two promos and ship all the items in ONE box with one tracking number (less labor processing two+ orders and less shipping materials). If you can't provide free/flat shipping, can't you at least give the cardholders 1 free shipping credit per month. The 5% return isn't enough for me to continue shopping exclusively with you. The rewards card doesn't even begin to cover 1/3 of the shipping costs spent buying your items.
Loved the Bella, Astrid bubble and Lexington jackets. I've stopped buying your pants and am quickly weaning myself away from tops and sweaters due to quality issues. Loved the Uptown totes when they were a reasonable $198 3 years ago, but stopped buying them when the price quickly skyrocketed nearly 50% more to the current $265-$295.
Yes, outlets DO ship, but they have the same shipping cost structure as the retail stores/website.
ReplyDeleteWhich one was the astrid bubble? I have the droopy flower one & love it.
ReplyDeleteOoops, meant to say Astrid berry, NOT bubble. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteDear J. Crew,
ReplyDeleteI dare you to bring back the rollneck... in cashmere. But not that flimpsy, quick-pilling crap. The good stuff. In serious colors - heather charcoal, forest green, not papaya. I'd buy it, full price, day one.
There's my gauntlet throw for the day!
Well, that settles it. We should start a campaign to reinstate the rollneck to its rightful place in the jcrew canon! They're still around on the men's side and crewcuts, why are the ladies being denied? They cannot afford to ignore a classic like this anymore.
ReplyDelete-update the fit (they started to do this as I mentioned in my last post about the rollneck, but it could be improved further)
-quality fabric (a good, medium thickness wool/cashmere blend or 100% cashmere, nothing too thin)
-vibrant, saturated colors like burnished olive, regal purple, kelly green, etc... but also solid neutrals like black, navy, heather grey, hazelnut, ivory... and some pastels + pinks too, I guuuessss ;)
What does the rollneck sweater look like? Can someone post one on polyvore and link it here? Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteHow about more sweaters that are actually long sleeved? I'm not a fan of bracelet length sleeves (they just look too short) and 3/4 sleeves are ok sometimes, but 3/4 sleeved cardigans over a long sleeved button up just looks ridiculous (in my humble opinion).
ReplyDeleteThanks, La Belle Helene, for the YouTube link. The model featured in that video and the Paris catalogue is the same woman they're using for the new catalogue. Does anyone else think she's dropped loads of weight (and there wasn't much there to begin with!)? I think she was so much lovelier in those Paris photos.
ReplyDeleteI have been buying J Crew for almost 5 years. Currently I miss the hipslung and the boy jeans. I am not impressed with the recent collections. I miss the beautiful prints. Some of my past favorite prints are the daisy dress/skirt, campo di fiore, talitha, femme skirts, etc. I miss the Kathryn shirts in the beautiful striped patterns. I miss the cargo pants. My favorite coat is the stadium cloth toggle coat from 2007 and I have the dani jacket in both yellow and red.
ReplyDeletethe most incredible dress from jcrew collection, but i'm not sure what season. it's a frenchy looking dress-- off white ruffles with a black sash.
ReplyDeleteanon @ 5:04pm,
ReplyDeletehere's the most recent (men's) roll neck.
the lambswool crewneck sweaters - I have one from 2004 that I absolutely adore and wear continuously!
ReplyDeleteOoo, Alexis, I think you're talking about the Shimmy dress. That's on my list too.
ReplyDeleteMy other pick would be the seaside print silk scarf from the cover of the Summer 2006 catalog...I'll always regret not buying it.
I feel so fortunate because I have so many of the items that people would like to see back and mine are all in wearable condition. I even have a couple of cotton rollnecks that I wear occasionally. Of course, I've been shopping with J.Crew for over a decade so have had time to build a collection.
ReplyDeleteThe items I would like to see return are
the hip-slung jeans;
the late 1990's down jacket that had a "shrunken" fit - soooo flattering for a down jacket, I have it in pale robin's egg blue;
the leather scooter jacket from 2001 - I would love it in another color. this jacket is very fitted and can be dressed up or down. the leather had held up beautifully and people often ask where I got it.
the 1/2" suede slides with lug rubber sole - mine are at least 6 years old and I am wearing them constantly every summer. J.Crew used to have such top quality footwear.
The Manhattan ballet flats! They were the most comfortable shoes and came in adorable prints! The current ballet flats are evil and amazingly uncomfortable. And the extra large Montauk totes in other colors than white and navy or pink and navy. I have a small pink and brown one I adore, but would love a huge one.
ReplyDeleteI think the closest thing J Crew is giving to us to the rollneck is their cashmere long sleeve sweater. With the exception of the finished collar, the rest is "unfinished" like the rollneck.
ReplyDeleteI purchased 4 cotton rollnecks in the tall version for my DH about 10 years ago and they still look fabulous.
1. The Heather Grey color for the cashmere sweaters used to be a lot richer and darker. I wish they would bring back that Heather Grey (as opposed to the current one, which is pretty light). I don't know if that makes sense to anyone but me! The Merino turtlenecks also used to come in a great dark grey color (I believe it was called slate grey).
ReplyDelete2. I'm in total agreement with those who love argyle. I need a cashmere argyle cardigan (preferably in beige or navy, not those bright greens and pinks they've had recently). I should have bought this one a few years ago.

3. Around 2001 or so, JCrew sold soft selvage jeans and they were perfect, with a great blue color and cut (not skinny, but not too flared either). The selvage jeans they've sold since then have been too dark in color and stiff-looking. I still have the catalog page my dream jeans appeared on (the model is also wearing a forest green cardigan with tan elbow patches, which I need). All I need to do is find it amidst my many papers!
the Emilia blouse. I have two of them, wish I'd bought more (but they only came in four colors in the first place).. would buy in every color if I could!
ReplyDeletethe tissue crewneck tees with metallic gold stripes, in more colors.
I want the Giverny-print skirt!!!!! It must have been out during my hiatus from J. Crew and when I found the top and dress, I bought them up but now I'm obsessing over the skirt. I even considered buying another dress to have a skirt made.
ReplyDeleteAnd I really miss the shoes that had leather soles and lining. They were delicious like butter....
zooey,
ReplyDeleteI have those selvage jeans--two different washes in fact from around 2001/2002 too! I love them and they still look great as I take super good care of my jeans.
JCrew should offer 1/2 price shipping to cardholders.
ReplyDeleteAt least that would cover their costs, etc. They MIGHT not make as BIG a profit off of shipping from cardholders like they do now charging regular prices--and that profit from shipping is BIG for JCrew.
I'm echoing other people when I say more petite 0! Or just more petite!! I have about 1/4 the selection unless I want pants dragging on the ground and blouses drooping off my shoulders and chest.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite old J.Crew item, is from winter 2006. I don't know the name because my now-husband bought it for me, but it is a double brested wool coat with 3/4 sleeves! It's the only 3/4 length sleeve winter coat I have ever seen and I get tons of comments on it. If J.Crew brings it back I hope they consider single breasted, but I love love love the 3/4 sleeves (no tucking in my gloves) and would pay full-price for another one :)
Bekah, I think I have that coat (or at least something very similar) - it's a black wool "Charlie" coat, double-breasted with 3/4 sleeves and Peter Pan collar. I absolutely LOVE it, and it is better quality than the coats from this winter.
ReplyDeleteIf JC could just marry the quality from their 2006 pieces with some of their 2009 pieces, it would be great news for me (and bad news for my wallet!)
I totally agree on bringing back quality. I have dream sweaters from fall/winter 2007 that I basically wore one season, and now they're in such bad shape I've thrown two out.
ReplyDeleteI'd also love to see them offer more boucle.
I shop mostly casual @ Jcrew 'cause the quality, esp. shoes and cashmere, has taken a nose dive in recent years.
ReplyDeleteI also miss prints, love anything slub and MISS CHUNKY (non cashmere) SWEATERS! I do NOT like anything "superfine" or when the entire catalog is all jewel tones.
jackie in SF-I didn't try the pleated tissue but the slub cotton crossover tee was a little big in XS but not as long as the Lux tees which practically come down to my knees. The v-neck was a little too deep for me so I returned it.
ReplyDeleteI wish they would bring back the more substantial cotton sweaters, even the cotton rollnecks. I have one from 1994 that I still wear. Some of the Egyptian Cotton ones are too thin. More dresses that aren't bridesmaid like and the shorter petite inseam.
If they re-released the Paris catalog today, I'd buy more from it than the march 2009 one. Anyone with me?
ReplyDeletePrints, prints, prints.
ReplyDeleteI loved the library print, but waited for the stuff to go on sale and missed out in the meantime.
Please bring back A-line skirts, especially for summer. All the skirts they do now are minis (which I cannot wear to work) or pencil skirts or flouncy unflattering ruffled skirts for summer. Does anyone remember the Bahamas skirt and the Paris skirt from a few years (maybe 3 or 4) ago? So so cute, and flattering.
Hip-slug jeans.
No hassle headscarf.
Thanks everyone for your great comments. I loved reading everyone's picks- there were so many items you listed that I agreed they should bring back. Especially the comments around certain colors like royal purple.
ReplyDeleteLisa: Unfortunately I do not have the Paris Catalog. I think it got lost when I moved last year. It makes me very sad. :(
heather: I hope you are right about the stadium cloth toggle coat. I like your optimism that certain items at J.Crew return! :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with Anon 9:37AM that JCrew should offer size 00 if they don't want to have the items in entire petite sizing. I love so many of their regular-sized items, but couldn't buy them because their size 0 are still big.
ReplyDeleteI'm desiring (yes, desiring) perfect patent leather pumps in all of those delectable spring colors! Oh to have an Opera coat! I'm sure I could go on, but these are top of mind.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to be on the lookout.
suede Pointy Toe Penny Loafer Flats (I'm with ya LizPoms)
ReplyDeletebella jacket in blue velvet and wool
the entire underwear line. It was FABULOUS. The only bras that have ever fit me right!
Way back when the Dawson's Creek gang wore JCrew & I was in HS they had an awesome LBD with white Tipped/Piped. It fit amazingly & was perfect for many occasions. I wish they'd remake that dress again. Mine eventually wore out
ReplyDeleteI was reading through these posts and noticed that I have a few of the desired items...usually in size small or size 6...and would be willing to part with them. I have the cashmere argyle skirt, the cashmere Opera coat in red, the vintage violet print coat, the Collection tulle cascade skirt. I also agree about the embossed cotton beach shift dress -- bring that back with more summery colors please!
ReplyDeletePlease let me know if you are interested...cyrinia at hotmail dot com.
I LOVE the cotton slub beach dress - put out last year (summer 2008)in Navy, Pink and Orange, I bought three before they sold out and live in them - I get constant comments on them - they wash and wear so well, with a little cami underneath, sweaters...they go with everything - if they come back I would buy 6 more! -
ReplyDeleteI ditto Kathleen, I NEED the white and tan lobster dress. I am vacationing in Martha's Vineyard and I saw this dress on a very probably young, late 20 year old. I feel in love, so much in love that I biked home straight away to google it and find where it was from and where I can get it. Now I see it's from J.Crew and no longer available? Was this a last year's dress? HELP where can I get this dress :(
ReplyDeleteI am far, far, way too many kinds of obsessed with the library print dress. If they brought it back, I would pay any price to acquire one.
ReplyDeleteThis is the worst case of something-I-didn't-buy guilt I've ever had in my life.
LIBRARY PRINT!!
ReplyDeleteExcursion quilted down vest in navy blue!
