The last JC dress I bought was Del Pelato dress (last summer).
After that, suddenly all JC dresses became much shorter. I had to switch strictly to pencil skirts… and now all the latest pencil skirts have shorter length too.
I liked the impressionist skirt, but the length… When I sit down in this skirt – it hits me at mid-thigh. No way I can wear it to work. Yes, I can take the hem down to make it a little longer. I’ve been doing it a lot lately.
The Eyelet pencil skirt is the worse, because it hemmed with different fabric and cannot be altered – sadly I had to return it. (Are you listening JCrew?).

Just got my flip flops and don't know if this will help anyone or not but I ordered my usual size 10 that I have always ordered from JCrew over many years in flip flops. I paniced a bit after placing the order b/c it says in the description 1/2 sizes order up. I never rememebered seeing that with their flip flops. I wear a 10 1/2 but order a 10 in flip flops and they fit just fine. I just measured my old pair to my new ones and they are actually a tad longer! So glad I stuck with my usual size. I would then say to ignore ordering up if you are a 1/2size!

ReplyDeleteSimply JCrew, I have the same issue. Almost every dress I've tried in the last year has been too short. Well, well above knee and that doesn't cut it at work nor do I care for it in my casual wear. Some dresses have had hems I can take down, others are not as easy. Pencil skirts can be tough because the walking slit hem can be cut on the diagonal to avoid the bulk of extra fabric, leaving no hem in that area to take down.
ReplyDeleteI am returning the silk cargo dress this weekend because it is 33" long from shoulder to hem. I think that it would be much nicer if they would offer longer regular lengths in dresses and skirts, and add a petite, rather than making them so short.
And to keep this on topic, I'm not taking advantage of this promo. The birthday promo was much better and I used it!

ReplyDeleteYes, I agree on the dresses and most skirts at JCrew being too short. I haven't bought a dress since the seaglass gown and the silk halter dress from last summer in hot pink. I don't even look at the dress section anymore. I am glad I bought a bunch of skirts from 2001--2007 as I bought a lot of duplicate colors in the same style that I LOVE.

ReplyDeleteI'm one who doesn't mind the shorter dress lengths, even though I'm 5'9" and it's likely due to my need to size up to fit my ample bust. I take a 4 in pants and skirts but need an 8 or 10 in dresses to fit up top. The larger size gives extra length on the bottom and the skirt of the dress is so loose, even after tailoring it never pulls up when I sit down so it totally works for me.
ReplyDeleteNow of course that wouldn't work if you're a size 2 up top but for those inverted triangles like me who usually have to deal with extra length in the larger sizes, the new shorter dresses are great.
I was sitting on two cashmere tees hoping for a percentage off. Only one was left when I received the email and I snagged it. I knew I was in for a blow when my cart only had one item! That happens pretty much never. I'm hoping that the slate floral skirt makes a pop up appearance in XS. I don't expect a sale price but it sold out in that size really fast and I blew it. ReplyDeletexoxo I have the same issue, I take 2 in pencil skirts and 6 or 8 in dresses depending on a cut. I like them shorter. It is not only JC, all fashion designers have shorter hemlines. I also like the shorter length on new pencil skirts, somehow 24" started to look matronly and dated. My office dress code is pretty casual, so no problem here. But I would not believe it last year when I even bought tall to get extra 2 inches.

ReplyDeleteIf 24" looks matronly and dated then count me in as matronly and dated:) I realize many designers are making shorter skirt lengths and when I was in Europe last month and in previous trips the past two summers I saw this trend coming to the US but not acceptable at my place of work so I am able to find other companies not so trendy right now for dresses and skirts.
ajc, I have noticed that too, other designers are featuring shorter skirts - love it. I have a fairly formal dress code where I work but since I'm a manager I can set the tone to some degree. If I'm wearing a shorter skirt or dress I always wear hose and shoes that keep the look demure. No bare arms or cleavage either, a little more leg is one thing...
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's because I'm fairly young that I think I can get away with it but it hasn't stopped my career progression so far. I often hear that I dress very well and was told my wardrobe is "so current" by one of the female VPs so I'll stick to my instincts. I have a lot of classic J.Crew suiting, pencil skirts, button-downs and Jackies that really help me feel professional and I think that is a big part of it, too.
Are there other designer dresses that you would recommend? I'd love to hear of alternatives.

xoxo, i am afraid i am like most people here, majority of my dresses (and the whole wardrobe) is JC, I have a few BR dresses, occasional AnnTaylor, one from Brora (after reading DaniBP) and i never bought from Anthro but I like some of their simplest dresses. I too think you can make shorter hemline look professional if you keep rest of the outfit demure, it is that little twist that keeps it modern. And when you are above D cup shifting attention to the legs is actually less scandalous ;)

Nils -- I highly recommend the Bensimon sneakers! Madewell sells them and you can find them on Piperlime, other online retailers. They come in lace-up and slip-on varieties and are very simple. Similar to Converse but more "clean" looking.

I actually ordered the spicy olive lightweight cashmere cardigan before and when it came, I was shocked to see that the color looked more like heather mint to me! I am convinced that sweater was mislabeled, so I returned it. On my montior the spicy olive color looks like a darker green??? Can anyone help?
Bright Young Thing, it sounds like your cashmere was mislabeled. The spicy olive Jackie is very much a spicy olive - a dark, almost cyprus-y green with a saturated, rich color.

ReplyDeleteOn the topic of matronly skirt lengths and what's appropriate for work .... Whether 24" skirts are OK depends a lot on your height ... I'm a shrimp so the 24" skirts often (especially if the waist is too big and they become "sits lower on waist" skirts) fall several inches below my knees :( I like my skirts to be at the knees or a little bit above (makes it so much easier for sitting through meetings) so keep my tailor busy ;)

ReplyDeleteJ.Crew seems to have some quality control issues with colors... in a short period of time, I've gotten 3 items in the wrong colors.
I got wool twill club pants, perfect pencil skirts, and supernova necklaces. I bought 2 colors for the necklaces but prob. going to return 1. I am also on the fence about the colletto black necklace. I'm having a hard time accessorizing!

Also does anyone have any experience with the pants? With 20% off they were $24 each, and they are short, which is good for me, but wondering how the fit is around the thighs? I thought at this price, it's worth checking out and if they don't work, they can go back.

ReplyDeleteI think it is TTS---I usually buy a small in sweaters, a 2 in shirts/tops and XS in tanks, and I ordered a Celosia small, and am happy. HTH!
I think this iteration of the Celocia runs a bit small. The spring version fit me much more snuggly than the fall version as I could layer under the fall version and cannot wear a shirt under this version in the same size. It is especially fitted through the shoulders and the sleeves. I am a 2-4 and purchased a small, but it is close in the shoulders (and mine are very narrow). I would suggest ordering up if you tend to be a little between sizes.

ReplyDeleteI am only 5'4 and a 24 inch skirt hits me just below my knee. With heels, this length is certainly not matronly for a conservative office at my height. For someone who is a petite, I can see where this length could be very unflattering.
ReplyDeleteMy issue is with all the 15 - 17 inch skirts. Sorry, but I don't see anyway to make that length look demure for a conservative office for anyone my height or above. I definitely would have purchased the bungalow and the wool shirred skirts if I had the option to purchase versions that were 20 inches or so. That would be completely wearable with tights.
My petite friends purchased a ton of these type of skirts this fall and they looked great on their 4'11 to 5'1" frames.
It would have been nice to have had options for work other than pencils, but based on the fall lookbooks I have seen from the Crew, AT and BR, I don't think this fall is going to be a bit better for any of us wanting a bit more modest length.
As far as skirt/dress lengths go, some if it is how you wear it. I can wear minis with tights and boots but would be sent home if I tried to wear them with bare legs and sandals and I'm only 5'7. There is a phenom in my office who dresses to kill every day. She's incredibly smart and accomplished, just oozes confidence and is also witty and well-liked. People do talk about her wardrobe but it's always positive. Most of us wish we could pull off what she wears and like XOXO at lot of it is because she's in management and respected. Being tall and fit/thin with a winning smile and attitude doesn't hurt either. :P

I am not one of those people myself, I prefer the longer pencils. The length gives me confidence that a short skirt would not.

Since I dont live near a jcrew, I love when people post their opinions about things they have seen in person. A review of some recent purchases that might help others:
ReplyDelete- Ethereal cardigan- lovely, BUT fell apart right away- holes in the arms and chest : ( However, Jcrew did let me return the item.
- Palisade cardigan- absolutely gorgeous. I wish it came in a brighter color but its very soft and the detail is great- definitely a keeper.
- Linen gazebo pants- great fit and quality but very scratchy- will not be keeping for that reason.
- Studded tunic - much more flattering than you would think, given the boxy cut. will definitely keep
- Pippy top- the blue color is very pretty and the fabric is high quality, however, it's a very boxy cut that basically has to be tucked in. still worth keeping : )
- Painter cardigan- very soft but way too flimsy and not very flatting.
-Merino popover tunic- very flatting and more sophisticated looking than I thought it would be. It looks great over a pair of skinny jeans or trousers for work.
- Jean shorts- quite possibly the worst pair of shorts I have ever tried on. They looked ridiculous and were not comfortable.
Blakely wrap blouse- adorable, versatile, flattering and very well made.
Anyway, if someone out there has similar taste and wanted an IRL opinion of these items this might be helpful : )

ReplyDeleteI wear a Large in all my JCrew cardigans. The Large Celosia I bought last week and returned is HUGE in the large. I reordered a Medium (shocker) and it is fine. I read on a blog link (from Gigi's blog) and that person mentioned she sized down as well this spring so there is my (our) 2 cents worth. I have no idea why others sized up. I mean I have 20 size Large cardigans in my closet from 2008-10 and this is my first Medium: the Celosia.

A - The fall Celosia ran a little large. I would have taken an XS in it. The spring Celosia I also preferred the XS in it as I recall. I have pics of the fall Celosia in this post with links to 4 other bloggers who tried it.
ReplyDeleteBright Young Thing - The J Crew SAs don't know the color names, from what I've experienced. No slam against them. Just saying. The burnished olive is in this post on my blog and I think the spicy olive is on the blonde actress in this Fiber One 90 Calories commercial. I could be wrong on color, but I know it's a Jackie because of the 2 buttons close to each other at the top of the sweater.
On the skirt debate, there are still some workplaces with dress codes that specify skirt length. My husband's company does, and tights or no tights, skirts cannot be more than 1" above the top of the knee cap.

I personally don't wear them since I am in a professional setting where it would be considered inappropriate, and they are age inappropriate for me. I always appreciate seeing skirts offered in regular and petite so women have a choice.
I was a little distressed by the silk cargo dress because I had wanted it to work so badly! There is quite a hem, however, it's top stitched and won't be easy to take down and look right for that reason. I feel like this is a dress in such a classic style, it would be wearable by a much broader range of women and useful in many more circumstances and seasons if it were a bit longer. I'm sad I have to return.

ReplyDeleteI found that the Celosia from the spring season ran smaller (and not comfortably so for me) especially across the shoulders and in the arms. I prefer the cut of the fall version in which i could have comfortably sized down if i had wanted a snug fit.
On the skirt length discussion: I'm loving the shorter length simply because i'm not tall. The 24 inch was not flattering on me, and i always had to get skirts hemmed ($$) if they weren't offered in petite. I do understand, however, that the 21-inch length does not work for everyone. I have a hard time with the length of the mini skirts.

ReplyDeleteThe spring Celosia ran large on me. I just got and returned for smaller size. The arms were huge as well as the body--and I have broader shoulders to boot. I would order a size down from my normal size.

ReplyDeleteO/T: I just washed my Vintage Slub Polo for the second time and it has developed a hole the size of a pencil eraser underneath the button area. So much for the heavier Vintage Slub cotton it is still crap! yet my $7.00 Walmart one is still going strong after many washings.

ReplyDeleteAlso, I am LOVING the topic of what's "appropriate" to wear at the office... very interesting. I think so much of your personality determines what you can and can't pull off. For example, I'm a very classic sheath dress and pearls kind of girl. Another woman I work with is casual to an extreme (we are a business casual office -- male-dominated industry and the men always wear suits), but she can pull it off. She usually wears a fun printed top with jeans, but she looks great. I could never pull of a super-casual look in the office, I just don't carry myself the same way.
Also, I tried on the Andre dress is a 00 petite... NOT office appropriate. Good Lord, the v-neck really plunges. Such a shame, because it's otherwise a pretty dress. I think they cut the torso too long on the petite sizes.

The spring one definitely fits more like an xs. I am only a 32A and this pulls on me a bit at the bust buttoned up. To make things even more fun, the aqua spring one measures somewhere in between and definitely has a bit more ease in the fit than the grey, so they may vary a bit by color as a lot of J Crew things do.

Regarding skirt lengths, I am 5'7" and I like 21" pencil length but I agree that anything 17" and below can only be pulled off outside of the office (and only if you are young and have a figure for it). I am able to work with 18" a-line by sizing up to 8 (from 2) and wearing them on my hips. That gives them about a length of 21" worn at waist. Similarly I could size up to 4 or 6 in 21" pencil to get it to hit at at the knee. Just a thought, since it looks like we will have to deal with shorter skirts for the fall as well. I also extend hemlines but that usually is only an option in a-line. For other options, Talbots have nice pencil skirts with 24" & 25" hemlines if you are not sized out there. I think they are a very good alternative and many of them recently look very JCrew-ish.
ReplyDeleteSomebody asked about chrome green irl. I have the charter tweed skirt and I love the color. It is very much like heather mint imo. I also worn it with sea spray tee for monochromatic look and it works very well.

I think I'll take a chance and order a size up since my usual size is no longer avilable online. I love the warm wheat color and can't find it in stores, so I hope the bigger size works. ReplyDeleteajc, I just tried the Talbot's eyelet pencil skirt which is 24" according to their website, but fits a little bit shorter than my 24" pencil skirts from J. Crew fall and winter. I agree that Talbot's is going to be a great source of longer skirts, and they do their skirts in petites too so those who want them shorter or who are not as tall themselves can also take advantage. Having said that, I still think J. Crew has the best prints and sometimes I will do as you do and size up in a pencil skirt to get an appropriate length. Their minis - forget it. I'm built like a stick so if I size up to get length, I end up not being able to keep it up :)

I absolutely agree with you that noone makes better pencil skirt than JCrew. The pattern is usually so unique, the price is decent and the cut is just perfect.
