I really like this ring. I have seen it in the store a couple of times now, and each time I linger around the jewelry case wondering if I should get it or not. I purchased the J.Crew's Cabochon Bouquet Cocktail Ring (Item 92716) awhile back and even though I love it, it is too cumbersome to wear (e.g. keeps getting in my way when I wash my hands or stuck on a coat sleeve). I was worried that the Nest ring would be the same. I was also worried about how well the "delicate hand-set acrylic beads" would stay put in the "twig-like nest".

Luckily for us, Gracefully (in this post) was kind enough to share her review of the Golden Bird's-Nest Ring with us.

Also, for those who like jcrew jewelry, i got the bird's nest ring for christmas (yay) in the coral color and love it. it really is beautiful and far more delicate in real life than it looks in the pictures. when i saw the website images i was afraid it would be garish or comical even, like a straggling birds nest sitting on my finger. but the nest part looks like filigree surrounding beads and not super nesty (unless you're told it's supposed to be a bird's nest and then you can see the effect) and the beads are fairly small and clustered. my only concern is that the beads are not set, so i fear they may come unglued with extended wear.

FYI on sizing, i got a size small -- the size i usually wear in rings -- and it's a little snug on the ring finger. doesn't fit index or middle fingers. but overall i got lots of compliments on this ring from both men and women. so if you're looking for something unique, i'd say this one's a get.

A big "thanks!" to Gracefully (in this post) for her great review! :)

  1. I could only see it as an exhibition piece.

  2. I do like the design but dropped the idea of purchasing it after seeing and trying it on in store. The plastic looking beads did not do it for me. Regarding the sizing, I am a size 6 and the size small runs a little loose.

  4. Gorgeous ring! Love the fist color. I could see it being worn for date nights, etc.

  5. Plastic bead on a ring! JCrew's jewelry is so cheap looking. I don't like it at all. I never even look at it anymore...cheap crap! There are so many beautifully made pieces out there...I won't buy something just to have the JCrew name. I look for quality as well as style and name!

  6. I have a complaint regarding jcrew's jewelry. I purchased the Double Strand Flower Necklace (style #98038). I had worn it barely 5 times before the necklace broke. The string near the top clasp had broken and unravelled. I brought the necklace to a jewelry shop to get the beads restrung, and discovered that the bead nearest the flower ornament had been glued into the string! This last bead was unusable with the string being stuck in the hole. Where I had initially thought only one of the strands needed to be restrung I now had to get both strands restrung to even out the length at no small cost.

Given the $175 usual price or even the $99.99 sale price tag for this item, I feel that the quality leaves much to be desired. Highly highly disappointing!

  7. Thanks for the review! I must be in the minority, since I actually own and love quite a bit of JC jewelry. Granted, it's not the highest quality but I buy it for the design and the fact that it complements many of their clothes. I own about 6 JC rings and I wear them on a daily basis. I get a TON of compliments, especially on my citron crystal garden ring. I almost bought this one, but was afraid of the beads being glued on, so I've held off. Love the ring, though and might grab it when the sale price goes lower.

  8. I just don't like their jewelry...to me it looks cheap and somewhat gaudy. For the prices they charge one can get a nice, real piece of jewelry (ie. not costume) that will last longer.

That being said, I am not one of those people who can feel comfortable pulling off bold pieces of jewelry, so kudos to those who can!

I have to wonder...if the pieces were not from J.Crew, would people go as crazy for them? I often ask myself this with things I like, such as, do I like this shirt just because it is from Anthro? Would I still buy it at this price with the reservations I have about it if it came from Old Navy?

  9. FYI....FS prices have dropped since last night and there is some new/old stuff back up. The Aubrey jacket is back on there, and the Maggie camel, ivory and citron have dropped to 89.99.

  10. What is madberries? Anyone ever try to register for any of their stuff? When I looked at the rules it implied that I had to send something to them to find out who the winner of an item was.

  11. A few years ago (three or so?) J. Crew had these espadrille wedges with the very same bird's nest accent piece in the front of the shoe. I know, because I own said shoes. After wearing them a few times, some of the plastic beads fell out. Luckily, I was able to find some small coral beads to replace the lost ones. I was surprised to see that J. Crew had recycled that detail into a cocktail ring!

  12. I think the ring is fun and I would wear it on Sat out (bought on deep sale). I feel pretty confident that anyone that owns this will find the balls falling out eventually. I would never wash my hands with it on--not a chance.

There stuff is mostly very cheaply made thus there is nothing I would need badly enough to pay those ridiculous full retail prices. I have a ton of the jewelry (super sale) and have really enjoyed it. I for one do not buy it because it is J Crew (I don't get that mentality. It's not as though it says, "J crew" across the top of the ring like an "Ambercrombie" shirt so not fully understanding that question?? Maybe I missed the point.) I buy it mostly because it is SUPER UNIQUE-junk jewelry meant to add spice to a great outfit. Not unlike the junk shoes.

  13. I have the Cabochon Bouquet Cocktail ring. I wear it when I want a fun, eye-catching piece, and it works- I get compliments every day that I wear it. Yes, it's large, but the effect is not comical. On the downside, one of the acrylic beads did come unglued. J.Crew replaced the ring, and said if there are every any problems with the new one, I can return it any time. I'm happy with that. I would also like to note that a similar thing happened to an authentic heirloom pearl, diamond and gold ring that I own. I had the pearl remounted with added glue by a jeweler. Of course J.Crew's ring is no where on par with the material and craftsmanship of the heirloom ring, but there is no way you can get a truly quality piece somewhere else for the equivalent price. You could get something a bit better quality, perhaps, with compromised style, in my opinion. When J.Crew jewelry is on sale, I think it's worth the price.

  14. bug pin, my point was more that we tend to but things because they are associated with a brand, regardless of whether the label or logo is splashed all over the piece. I know I have been guilty of buying something because it came from a store or brand I like when if I saw the same thing at a "lesser" store (ie. Forever 21 vs. Anthro) I would not have looked twice at it.

It's all about marketing and "prestige" associated with a brand or label, which can overcome any defects or reservations one may have about a particular item.

  15. I gotcha. I typically just love the piece and knowing the quality isn't great..I buy it on sale...otherwise I pass knowing there will be other things down the road:)

I just don't think that way so wasn't grasping your thoughts. Now I see what you are saying. Have a great day:)

  16. I do not find the jewelry appealing at all. It looks cheap and I would not be surprised to find out there is lead content in the metal, or gawd knows what else.

  17. I own this ring in the coral, and I love it! I bought a size S, and am able to wear it on my index finger. In my opinion the ring does not look cheap, and after wearing it several times already I don't have any issues with it, ie beads falling off. I've received several compliments on the ring, and I think it is a fun piece!

  18. Oh, and I bought it for $50 less 30% back in December.

  19. The first time I saw this ring was in person at a store and I fell in love. I haven't bought it yet though.

I think a week or so ago Alexis had a post with a scanned page of Marie Claire with Lisa Finkelstein, the jewelry design director at JC. In there Lisa gave some of her picks (JC and other brands as well) including those platform shoes no one liked. Well in that same spread 2 pages later there's another woman (I think a news reader) giving her own picks and this ring is one of them. She chose and ivory color. After I saw that I really, really wanted it, I just don't feel like shelling out $50.

If you're interested, check it out in the January issue of Marie Claire. I think Jessica Simpson is on the cover.

  20. I'm tempted to purchase the Cloud Necklace.

    Any thoughts?
