J.Crew Collection Pieces {what's your take?} :)

"Thanks!" to Anon at 3:41 PM (in this post) who suggested a wonderful post topic: to list some of our favorite J.Crew Collection pieces that we have (or seen in person) and review them. I think this is a great idea, since so many of us have been able to purchase some Collection pieces, at some amazing prices, during the holidays.

The Sean Bag in Tulip (Item 99785; Regular $268.00, now $149.99)-- I am not a huge fan of the resin links for the handle/ strap, however the purse itself is gorgeous! The "smooth, supple and specially wax-treated" leather really is smooth- I have found myself petting it more than once. (Weird, I know! But it is that smooth.) ;) I also found the rich Tulip color is very beautiful in person- a great way to add a "pop of color" to any outfit. I appreciate that the purse is lined- which many J.Crew bags are not. :) I also found that although the bag is small, it is big enough to carry my wallet (which is not thin), a cellphone, and a small makeup bag.

The Frankie Bag in Guave Rhubarb (Item 96818; was $395.00, now $129.99)-- I waited a long time to get this bag and it was worth it as I love it! This bag is just the right color (e.g. can be used in any season; incidentally the color in person is like the color shown in the image) and just the right size (e.g. big enough to hold lots of items including a paperback book, but still a shoulder bag). The leather itself is beautiful, and it is great at maintaining its shape. I love that the bag has a zipper- which provides me that extra level of security I prefer. The only drawback to the bag is that it is not lined (and I am not sure why that is- it really should be).

Another J.Crew Collection piece that I really like is the the Metallic Giraffe Day Coat (click here to read a review).

What are your favorite J.Crew Collection items? What are some of the reasons behind your choice(s)? If you purchased or have seen those items in person, please share with us your review. :)

  1. Alexis: I have a bunch of structured designer purses and my main problem with them is that with all the crap I lug around, if the purse is heavy when it's empty, it turns into a ton of bricks when I actually put stuff in it. I'm curious, how is the weight of the Frankie when empty?

  2. Alexis - I also have the Frankie bag and agree that it is gorgeous! Another collection that I own is the Daisy Eyelet Blazer. Very pretty!

  3. I have the Fiona Jacquard Jacket in Sea Salt. I love it! The fabric is very soft and the texture is interesting yet subtle. The mother-of-pearl buttons are beautiful and add an elegant touch. The jacket looks good with jeans, pencil skirts, etc. It is lined and the lining has polka-dot trim for that extra touch. I have had many people ask me about the jacket and it always gets a lot of looks when I wear it.

Another favorite is the Chain Print Merino Sweater Dress. I remember stalking this one on the website after last Christmas! I was worried about the print being too much; it is definitely eye catching but it is not over the top. The fit is very flattering. I have worn the dress with tights and boots, tights and heels, and bare legs. This is another item I have a lot of people ask me about.

Looking forward to seeing everyone's favorites!

  4. I bought the Frankie bag, but returned it (got the cherry color). I LOVED the shape, leather, size, but I didn't enjoy the color so much...for me (obviously, many people liked it!).

I got the Jamie bag today, and love it for than anything. I own the Marc Jacobs Blake and Multipocket, and think the quality is somewhat close. However, the Jamie bag is lighter, which I REALLY like.

I am a bit worried about the bag scuffing (already has a few after 1 day of use)...but otherwise, it is perfect!

  5. I love all the Collection items I own.
    - Teagan ruffle solid herringbone top in peony
    - Berry Boucle scarf coat
    - Jamie bag

I am not sure if Vachetta city bag and Cloud necklace are part of the Collection but I like them both too.

  6. Lula, Jamie bag scratches easily so you kinda have to let it go and accept it. Otherwise, this bag is wonderful. I wish I could have it in all the colors it came. My bag is in Cloud Gray.

  7. i like this topic so here it goes...

I have the sean bag in dark cloud, thought i wouldnt like it but the whole design works well. The Owen bag of course!!! I absolutely love the materials used and the design of this bag. I am still drooling over the champagne color which I would love to own. The terra cotta is gorgeous! I think I will end up liking the buttercup when I get to use it this Spring. The SERENGETI dress!!! Absolutely stunning! I thought it would be too much but holy moly! Its very alluring! Polynesian print sweater dress both colors are amazing in person! light enough to wear any time of the year and the print just speaks good quality. The Metallic houndstooth Phoebe which says its not part of the collection but the marie is, well its the same material and I have to say it is so classic!!! i sized down to give it more of a tailored look.

so far i like these collection purchases of mine. still waiting for the Stormy Tweed Lille. I will let you all know.

    lovely ruffles..

but jcrew should wrap collection item more delicate

  9. LOVE LOVE JCREW COLLECTION! So many...shimmy dress, silved sand, pants, isabella dress, glitter cardigan, merino sequin sequin chiffon shell....

  10. Good Morning Alexis! I LOVE your Frankie Bag, especially the color...congratulations on getting it!!! :)

  11. Being a stay at home mom for 7 years I prefer sweats and sweatshirts...cozy and comfy. When I do dress up I enjoy my Cascading Flowers Astrid and two collection cashmere sweaters. I also were my Boucle scarf coat on occasion. Too nice for everyday that's for sure!

I like to be able to sit on the floor, play outside in the sandbox, and do arts and crafts without worrying about spoiling my clothes.

Plus, there are lots of cute sweatsuits out there. I have to be ready to exercise at a moments notice as well when I get the chance so I have to be ready.

My favorite collection piece though has to be the Daisy Eyelet Blazer...agree with greendino.

  12. I LOVE Collection pieces (on sale, of course!) Where do I start???? I have the Metallic Jacquard Daisy dress that I wore to a wedding and is sitting in my closet dying to be worn again. Like Alexis, I love my Metallic Giraffe Coat, my Jamie bag, and a bunch of different shoes (calf hair mary janes, distressed silver crackle mary janes). As much as I love Collection, I'm not sure their original prices are justified. I have only bought my things on sale, at prices that I felt were fair, based on the quality of the garment.

  13. Anon at 12:18AM: I am with you about lugging a lot of stuff around! ;) I find the Frankie bag to be light, especially light compared to some other bags of similar size (e.g. Coach). The bag also keeps it structure well with a lot of stuff in it, although the bottom may "sag" a bit depending on what's there (e.g. a heavy book versus a light makeup bag).

Green_Dino: Congrats on the Frankie bag! :)

FFM: Thanks for the congrats! I literally had to stalk the purse on the website for weeks (even having it canceled on me a few times). But I am happy I finally got it. :)

  14. Their chunky cashmere sweater is very soft and thick. I like their collection pieces in general.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Alexis did you ban more posts from the thread that was exposing Leigh? Or did someone from blogger do that? I'm wondering if Leigh complained about it or something.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I only have 2 collection items, both purchased over the last 6 months on super-sales.

Metallic Giraffe Coat (I agree with you Alexis, I love this coat!) and the Houndstooth Pheobe. Love them both, but never would have bought either at even half the orig. price!

I'm curious about JC's handbags. Our store has none, so I've never seem one IRL, but I'm hoping to check some out while on our trip to New York in a couple of weeks!

  17. I have the same color frankie and I just love it! I;m not sure if the other Borge leather bag I have is Collection (uptown tote), but I think the quality is great on both bags, especially for what I paid!

I also have a Collection cashmere sweater, with a collar and four peacoatish buttons at the top, swing style at the bottom. I got it on a big discount last fall and don't know which season it is from or anything. I don't think that it would be mine if it had been anywhere near approaching full price, though. While the knit is a very dense weave and thick weight, it is not at all as lofty and soft as other cashmere pieces I have. There wasn't any indicator that it was a "special" piece other than a different color label.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Alexis,
I also love my Cherry Guava Frankie bag. I happened to find one on ebay after trying for weeks to get one from the JC website. The color is beautiful and I receive compliments whenever I use it.

  19. The OWEN hobo in champagne!!! Love it!!! Gorgeous leather, gorgeous color, perfect size. Got it at a GREAT price. I'm very happy. I, too, am a stay-at-home mom to 3 boys and see things I love, but have to ask "do I really have a place to wear it?" ~sigh~ My standbys - J.Crew bootcut jeans and perfect-fit tees.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I love the Polynesian print dress in rubarhb and the Confetti Bateau top from last Spring. I also favor the Fiona Jacguard jacket. As K mentioned, very versatile and beautiful detailing.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I have the Maise Calf Hair Ballet Flats from last season (loepard print). They are gorgeous and I love them. I've worn them quite a bit and they are comfortable and have held up well.

    ReplyDelete
  22. OT, stormy tweed lille in 6, 8 and 14 on the website now. I think someone was on the exchange yesterday asking for it!

    ReplyDelete
  23. FYI - The sale section has been restocked. There are a few good items that have been "sold out" available.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I have the Frankie bag in Cherry.

I love this bag, it is one of my all-time favs and I have several other designer bags that cost many times more. I was able to get it for about half the original price too, which was a great deal.

The cherry color is a really nice red with blue undertones. It doesn't stand out as much as some other reds I have seen, it really goes well with a lot of outfits and I've used it year-round. It looks especially good with my black coats, adding a splash of color on those dark winter days.

Structure holds up well and it is a unique shape too. Large enough to hold quite a lot, but not so large that it will look dated once the "bags from the land of the giants" trend is over. The leather is superb and very nice to the touch. I don't mind that it is unlined as the suede interior does not rub off or pill and it feels nice too.

Congrats to others who picked up this bag as well. We will surely enjoy it for many years.

  25. Anon at 9:28 AM: I did disable the comments for the "J.Crew's Jackets & Outerwear {how's the fit?}" post this morning. Leigh (or anyone on her behalf) did *not* contact me about doing it. To be honest, I avoided reading that post for sometime. After reading it all last night and some this morning, I felt the conversations (on both the original topic of "Jacket fits" and the Leigh/eBay reseller situation) went as far as they were going to. I hope I haven't offended anyone with the decision to disable comments, but I felt it was the right move to make. :)

Lindsey B: Yey for the Giraffe coat! It is definitely a piece I think that some people love (like you and me) or would leave. :)

Anon at 9:49 AM & Joangee & Anon at 10:26 AM: I am happy to hear you got the frankie bag too! {yey!} It's too bad the bag isn't lined, I am always worried about ruining the interior leather. :)

  26. I love all my collection pieces - great topic - one of my favorites is the silver ruffle skirt from last summer - got so many compliments. Also love the Gramercy Houndstooth coat (also last year). Love the shoes too as someone else said - I am still kicking myself for returning the kinzie calf hair peep toes...but I do have the silver crackle MJs - beautiful. Recently I bought the liquid gold sequin skirt and it is really beautiful. Oh and the Ischia dress - Love it! Also gets a lot of comments, such a beautiful print.

  27. I have a lot of Collection and just love a lot of it. First, both the Owen Hobo and Jamie Bag are showstoppers. I love the questions I get asked when using each. They are stylish, but people can't "place" them like they would other designer bags. I also love my cashmere seaters from Collection - Bristol and others. My newest love is my Taylor Jacket - the sequins are very discreet and it just looks special. Also like the platinum tween Astor coat. Getting the sleeves shortened, but other than that, perfect. My Galassia and silver glitterati sweater from last year are favorites too. Still upset I let the "painter" skirt from this fall get away.

  28. Alexis, thanks for answering, I was just curious!
I appreciate that you explain things and don't try to avoid a topic.

  29. Does anyone know what the problem is when you click on a blog and it doesn't come up? It's not set to private, yet blogger can't find it? An example of this is the Hipprep link that Alexis has right now.
I obviously don't know much about blogger... and I'm viewing it in a foreign language right now... So if anyone also knows how to tell me to get it back to english, that would be great too. (I am overseas, so i guess blogger thinks I want the language of the country I'm in, but I obviously don't.
    Thanks!

  30. Anon at 10:47 AM: Thanks for understanding! :)

Anon at 10:50 AM: When you click on my name (which appears in blue), it should take you to my profile. On my profile, the J.Crew Aficionada blog should be listed with a link. If the link is not working, please let me know and I will definitely try to fix it. :)

  31. I have the sparkle plaid tweed pencil skirt, and I really enjoy it. It is a well-made and unique piece that works for a variety of occasions. I get compliments whenever I wear it :)

I also have the cashmere Flora dress in gray, and I have to say that although it is a cute dress and the cut is flattering, I am not happy with the quality of the cashmere. I have worn it three times, and it has pilled so much it looks like it has a disease. I have (gently!) used a fabric shaver on it and this has made it wearable again. I have to say though that even though I got this dress on sale, I do not feel it is worth even the sale price.

  32. i got the jamie bag in dark cloud (as a christmas present for myself ;) and the owen in champagne (from my hubby) and love both! they are beautiful and perfectly sized. however, the 2nd time i used my jamie, i pulled one of the tassles right off when zipping it up? any suggestions how to fix it?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I am anon at 10:50,
Sorry for not being very clear. I don't have any problems with any link to this site... I just have seen links that don't work (like the hipprep link that you have in your blogroll... I've seen other links like this that said blogger can't find the blog, and wondered what it meant) It's probably more confusing for me, because like I said, nothing is in english. :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. OT-forgive me if I am behind the times as I am typically avoiding the JC site but new arrivals show the victoria blouse back in camel and black stripes(full-price, of course) but there in all sizes. They must have re-ordered.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I have the purple roses top from last year... I love the print, but the cut of the top is definitely not flattering... wish I had been able to try it on before ordering it. I hate paying to ship things back, and I loved the print so much I kept it anyway... Hey, I'll be able to wear it when I decide to have kids! :)

I have the boucle scarf coat from this year- LOVE the color, LOVE the fit, just wish the arms were a little longer... other then the length, I think the quality is good.

I have the aubrey dress (the sweater dress with the bow at the waist) from this year and LOVE it. I have only worn it once though, so I can't talk about the pilling. But I think the cashmere is nice and thick.

I also have the long Beckett leather flat boots in black... They don't say they are a collection item, but I did buy them at the collection store. I thought that was odd because I thought all of the items in the Collection store were from the Collection line? But maybe I'm wrong about that. However, I LOVE the leather on these boots... they were automatically broken in for me, the fit around the ankle was nice and flexible and supple.

That is all I can think of off of the top of my head. I know I have bought more collection items in the past, but I can't remember what is and what isn't. That has to tell you something. Besides the items I have purchased recently- I can't tell what is the regular line and what is collection. I think I should be able to tell a difference between the two!

    ReplyDelete
  36. OT - Does anyone happen to have the promo code for BR right now? I had a card they gave out a few weeks back and cannot find it anywhere?! I can't remember if it was an in store only promotion or if their was an online code too. I'd really appreciate anyones help! Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I have the Jamie bag in black. I've had two women stop me yesterday to ask me where I got the bag. I also love the quality, size, versatility, and the fact that people can't quite "place" the bag like they would a Coach bag or Marc Jacobs bag. I agree with Lula Mae that the quality is very close to the MJ blake. For $120, it's the steal of the century!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I have the long flat fabienne boots in Charcaol (the ones with the grey patent trim up top and down the back). I love these. I got them, put them on and found them instantly comfortable. Like, someone said up top, already broken in! The leather is really nice -although they are a touch baggy. They fit with plenty of toe wiggle room. :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Sorry, they are not Collection items, but they are expensive for jeans.....

Can anyone comment on the fit of the Vintage Slim jeans? Is it like a boycut? Did you go with your regular size? Thank you!

I haven't bought many collection items, but I did get the Janelle cashmere sweater during the 30% off + free shipping, and I couldn't be happier. I have the broad shoulder/small waist thing going on, and got a medium, so I'll be glad to put this through it's first hand wash to shrink it up a bit. It's much roomier in the waist than it appears on the model, but one shrink will fix that, I'm sure. The collar is so versatile-great piece.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I absolutely love my cashmere academy sweater. It is so soft, and it's easily the warmest sweater I own. It pilled initially a little bit, but i went over it with a cashmere comb and it looks even better than it did before!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Jamie: I have a ONE-TIME (okay, that means other JCA's....This code is for Jamie only! hee, hee
LOL!!!) code for 20% off BR through the 18th:

    PQVQY13HTXLY

I believe it's only on full price merchandise. Have fun!!!

  42. anon at 10:50: I am the one who should apologize, I didn't read your original comment properly. Thank you for the clarification. :) I agree with you that the hipp prepp blog link no longer works. I just googled it and the other links to the same blog don't work either. She must have removed her blog.

  43. I got a great deal on the metallic Astor coat and love it! I also do really like the look of that gala bow clutch that was in the header in the post- great take on the Valentino bow bags of last fall.

I would love to know if anyone has seen any of the luggage IRL- I have to wonder who would pay that much for luggage (from JCrew anyway, given quality concerns) especially in that bright yellow color.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Anon at 11:40: What size do you typically wear in sweaters? I've been eyeing the Janelle too and hoping it'll pop up in a size that works for me.

    and the

Satin Trim V-Neck Top in Retro Yellow

    Thanks SO much again!

  48. Jaime: LOVE that bag. In fact, I was looking at it this morning, but I'm waiting for more colors. I just bought a BR bag in chalk last week on major clearance with an additional 20%. It came to $70!!! It was a total score.

I'm loving that Nantucket bag...in fact, I love all their new bags! Enjoy it!!!

  49. I have the sparkle plaid tweed pencil skirt, it is just darling! So versatile, and fits wonderfully. I also own the daisy eyelet tunic top in ivory, I just adore this piece!

  50. I really like J.CREW Collection coats and bags. Some of the other items are a little iffy.

Sorry Alexis, but I just wanted to get this out. Leigh and Rapunzel are the same person IMO. She sent me a message on Facebook begging me to read her blog. Strange, right?

    ReplyDelete
  51. tammylee- I am often torn between small and medium cashmere sweaters. I do have some small, and they fit, but the look is snug. The mediums fit perfectly in the shoulders, and I get a blouse-y fit in the waist. In J Crew blouses I am a small, but anything snug like a T-shirt, I will get a medium. If you want the Janelle to fit like it does on the model, I would buy the smaller end of your normal sizing, and dry clean only, as all of my cashmere has shrunk with hand washing. With a luxury basic like that, going small can be iffy, though, and I have a feeling that sweater is pinned on the model.

    ReplyDelete
  52. LOVE my Corossol jeweled sandals, I get compliments on them every time I wear them.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I got a few Collection cashmere sweaters on sale recently and they are wonderful!

    -Butterfield jacket
    -Academy Cardigan
    -Janelle

Tammylee: I found the janelle to run tts. I have had to size down on many jcrew sweaters this season, but did not need to on this one. I wore a tissue tee underneath and would describe the sweater as fitted. HTH!

    -Allie

  54. I have the Academy sweater and the Cashmere chunky sweater and I LOVE both of them. I have worn them many times and so far, no pilling! They are thick, soft and really warm.

    ReplyDelete
  55. anon 12:42, its strange alright. who sent the message (Sivouthy Lam, Leigh, or rapunzel1921)?

  56. I think the only collection item I have is the green Soiree sweater. While I don't find the sweater to be of any special quality, the crystal buttons are beautiful and the sweater is unique. I wore it during the holidays (I thought the green was very festive) and received many compliments. Overall, I love it and was very happy to snag it on sale.

  57. I missed getting the jamie bag and I'm regretting it :( I wanted it in the dark cloud or black and tried the search function but no luck.

  58. Does anyone have the cashmere florette jacket? I am wondering about the quality of the cashmere.
    Thank you

  59. Sivouthy Lam is one nasty little wart. I hope she doesn't ever try to pull this crap again.

Alexis, love the blog. You'll never have to giveaway anything to me to keep me as a avid reader! Keep it up! :)

  60. Ana Patricia:

Can you comment on the fit of the chunky sweater? I had to size down on the academy cardigan and was wondering whether I would need to on the chunky as well. TIA!!

  61. I love Collection pieces, especially the skirts. I have the Rugby Striped (pink and orange) skirt from last summer and the School of Fish skirt (orange with littles fishies). I also adore my Berry Astrid and Jamie bag from this year. Sometimes the collection pieces can be a little over the top, but most are just too cute to resist!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I have a New Years request for all Aficionadas.

When describing the fit of an item, PLEASE describe your body type. Things like 'tts' mean almost nothing without this description. For example, something that is tts for a 5'4" busty woman in a small, may not be tts for a 5'9" small chested woman in a small, even if they both normally wear smalls.

Also, people have different tastes in how they like things to fit. If could be helpful if that is part of your fit description too.

Just a request I think would help everyone. Thank You!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I've liked a few of the collection pieces offered in the past few months (although I don't always see the difference between collection pieces and normal pieces). Here are my faves:

    * metallic ball Cherie cami -- I love the color and detailing. I wear a lot of warm colors, especially browns, and this cami is a spicy addition to any outfit involving a brown cardigan or jacket.

    * golden roses Renée coat -- I wrote several reviews dedicated to my love of golden roses items here and here.

    * Owen hobo -- I have it in terra cotta and champagne and love it. Between the two of them, I have most of my outfits covered as far as complimenting handbag goes.

Also, thank you dani_california for pointing out that sale inventory has been updated! It may technically break my 6-month-off rule from buying J. Crew, but I've been dying for the jade Gayle patent leather heels in my size for weeks now (you can check my weekly exchange posts for proof!), so I consider them grandfathered. I just checked them, and there they were! Yay! Now here's hoping they don't get cancelled. Fingers crossed...

  64. That was my first attempt at embedded hyperlinks, and of course I managed to screw them up. I will get it right this time!

Golden roses posts are here and here.

  65. I love J. Crew collection merchandise. To be frank, I never really noticed J.Crew (maybe because i wasn't paying attention :) ) until I saw this line. I like the fact that many of the pieces are a bit over the top, and i think this is what distinguishes them from their former straight preppy look and current the classic with a twist look. Having been reintroduced to the whole line, though, I've been captivated by all J.Crew merchandise including a few jewelry pieces and the suiting. :)

Of the Collection, I am very happy with the Bella coat in cashmere, the daisy eyelet jacket, jacquard Fiona, Italian houndstooth Greta, golden roses skirt and jacket, and cascading flower Astrid.

My favorite bag this year has been the Owen, but it didn't work out for me because i couldn't manage the handles on my shoulder. The bag is beautiful though.

I saw on polyvore you used the lattice cami in a few sets...super cute! How does it fit? I am pear-shaped, so things like the Lydia and Elizabeth worked well for me, whereas the Victoria did not. TIA!

PS Congrats on the Gayles; I hope you get them!

  70. I had purchased the soiree jacket/sweater in silver whenit went on sale. I was very disappointed with it, and was surprised it was a Collection piece. I ended up selling it on eBay.

I would be willing to buy more Collection pieces if they broadended their size range. Most bottoms stop at 12.

    ReplyDelete
  71. This has already been said by many - but I LOVE the Jamie bag! I have the burnt sienna and it is even better than I expected. Perfect size and great slouchy shape after a few weeks of use. I would buy this bag in black if it was still available (and if I had $400 laying around..)
The leather is so soft and I think this is a classic bag that I will keep for a very long time.

Oddly enough, nobody that compliments it can believe it came from J. Crew!

  72. I was in my b&m today and I saw the Stormy Tweed Lille coat. I was not impressed by the fabric at all. This coat will not keep you warm in cold weather. The fabric had little (if any) natural fibers. It was mostly nylon, etc. (I wish the website would list percentages of fabric content like a clothing label). Anyway, it had sort of a stiff scratchy feel to it. Fabric coats should contain lots of natural fibers (wool, silk, etc.), NOT synthetics. I would not order this coat without seeing it IRL first. Just my opinion! :)

  73. Yes the stormy lille is an early fall coat only, unless you live in a warmer climate. I liked the way it looked on but forced myself not to buy it b/c of the impracticality of it for the winter.

  74. Classic_style - I also have the cashmere flora dress in grey - I've definitely worn mine more than 3 times and it hasn't pilled at all, which is strange since yours has been a problem with this - sorry to hear that, I hate when things pill! I do think their cashmere dresses vary in quality eg the Aubrey/Audrey with the taffeta bow is really nice and thick but the other style (I forget the name) that they always have with 3/4 sleeves that comes in lots of colors, is definitely thinner. I also got the Flora on sale and agree it was not worth the full price.....and all these dresses are supposedly Collection pieces. I bought a cashmere dress on sale from BR last week, it was down to $104 from about $279 or so and it is really thick cashmere with a contrast in the pattern/knit at the neckline, beautifully finished at the sleeves and hem etc and with 3 nice buttons at the back neck. It is the first non J.Crew cashmere I have bought but for the price and quality it is definitely very nice and I'll be hoping it wears well.

  75. ANON 11:40 I have the Vintage Slim Jeans in worn Indigo wash (not the new antique destroyed wash version which are a bit lighter in color and may fit differently). I found them to run big-I sized down one size. The denim is SO comfy but a bit cold/breezy in the winter via the holes;)

  76. Fun post! I have the frankie bag in guava too and love it! It holds my slr and lenses : ) or a sweater, wallet, even shoes!

    The other collection pieces--
Catherine cashmere sweater --nice and thick!
A black wide striped sequin shirt also supercute from a couple years ago

I would have loved a couple other collection items (CF astrid, leather skirt) but the price was way too much for the use I'd get out of it.

It's great to live vicariously thru the happy jcas here enjoying their cf astrids : )

  77. Kinda OT: I just came back from the Rockefeller Centre store - they have a slew of new Spring items up. The ones that caught my eye were:

The Victoria Ruffle Cami was in a few different colors including a very awesome cantaloupe melon color - it would go great under the Navy Aubrey jacket.
The giraffe shorts were super cute, but made of a particularly stiff linen - I had visions of mega wrinkles.
I also loved these patent leather peep toe ballet flats in blush pink, but at $155, I thought it was steep for a flat. The cotton poplin Sydney dress is lovely, totally not flimsy - I just wish stores would carry it in the light pewter. They also had these two-tone schoolgirl cardigans in soft colors. My only gripe was that the buttons seemed extremely thin as if they wouldn't remained buttoned for long. I was a little disappointed the Grenada Palm cami wasn't as vibrant IRL, but it's a still pretty piece. Other than that, nothing else to report. :)

  78. My favorites:
Not many have mentioned the FAB Cascading Floral Astrid which is divine in all ways-love this classic and stunning piece. Very well-made and the lining is like but-tah.

Love the Vachetta (rose tan) leather Uptown Tote-simple and works with anything. Not sure why it's collection though.

The FAB blue sequin Glitter Cardi is really something special..made really well and I got it for half price so that made me :)

I love my Martines--they are not pilling, they look so crisp and special with a white blouse underneath. Love the vintage buttons.

Phoebe Metallic--wouldn't have bought this but after reading a few other reviews and getting SUCH an amazing bargain price, I snatched it up. I really like it but haven't worn it yet. Need to play around with it a bit. Any aficionadas with outfit ideas are welcomed. Seems simple is best;)

Ah..Butterfield. a sumptuous, warm delight. Also wearing well (not pilling thus far). Compliments galore when I wear this-such simplicity--very Chanel.

BTW-now that I have the Spring catalog in front of me versus the other day when Alexis posted about Spring items we liked..there's a very pretty Colorblock Cashmere Cardigan (99852) in Bright Tangerine with pink Trim-very cute if you don't already own Martine. The chunky cardigan looks, well, even chunkier.
Also, the blouse I mentioned that didn't have a link yet is actually a dress. Silk Twill Pleated Halter Dress item 99822. Would have made a gorgeous blouse but the dress looks like a sack. Maybe it could be cut down? The price is surprisingly lower for a dress:) Cannot believe all I want is a ruffle tank at $20 and a pair of cute new flips-he, he this is GREAT!

    ReplyDelete
  79. bug pin: I'm glad the Butterfield works for you! I wanted to love it. I had trouble with the sleeves being an odd length. And, after wearing it for only a few hours, the seems on both sleeves began to pull apart. I had to return it.

  80. bugpin- Thanks re the Vintage Slim jeans! Are they slim? I'm lookin for more of a comfy boycut-kind of loose-ish. -11:40

  81. I saw one of the Vachetta totes in the pink (that Bug Pin mentioned above) for 99.99 plus 30% off when I was at Somerset Collection last week. The leather looks nice, but I agree with her that I was surprised it is a Collection piece. The tote was in the sale room hanging on the end of a rack with sweaters or something on it, no dustbag or tissue filler, but seems to have been in good shape. If a fellow JCA got it already, hope it's working out!

  82. My favorite UPS guy just dropped off my latest JC purchases (he'll be back tomorrow AND Friday....the neighbors probably think we are sleeping with eachother! LOL). Inside was my latest Collection piece: the Deep Peony wool Teagan blouse. If you like ruffles and you like this color (deep pink), this blouse IS TO DIE FOR!!! I just steamed it and fluffed the ruffles which are made with layered chiffon and wool and it looks incredible. I was tempted to change into it right away but since I'm just going to pick up the kids I thought I would hold off until tomorrow! I highly recommend this top and I believe it's only $59.99 on sale. I also bought this on FS, but it is not marked on the receipt.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Anon-not bootcut, but definitely more slouchy, boyfriend, loosish style. The leg opening is prob a bit wider than matchsticks or a straight leg jean but def not bootcut. Leg opening is small enough to peg the way they showed every model last Spring/Summer/Fall catalogs if you want to refer to pics. HTH!

  84. Anyone know anything about the Nolita Denim jacket? Have you bought it? Seen it IRL? Any comments on their denim jackets, re sizing, in general?

I really need a new one (own 2 not JC, and are getting shabby).

    Thanks.

  85. bugpin-Thanks re the Vintage Slim. I don't think they're what I'm going for. The denim is so pretty though.

  86. leslie-how does the teagan shirt fit? think the color would go well with the Tulip Lulu Peep toes, or would it be too much? I have been so on the fence about that shirt for a while, and I just ordered the Crawford in Bright berry with a cami to match to go under it. I feel like the teagan would look good with jeans too...your thoughts? It's very me, it's pink and has lots of ruffles!!

    ReplyDelete
  87. The deep peony Teagan shirt is awesome, but its not a JC Collection piece. It is, however, a well-made, stylish piece for $59. The color is fabulous and, IMO, flatters many skin tones.

Fit wise, I am 5'4" with relatively broad shoulders and 36B chest. I ususally where an 8 in JC's fitted shirts and an 8 fit me perfectly.

Collection pieces are always among my favorites. I took a long break from shopping J.Crew because the clothes seemed too young and casual (bright khakis, tees, hoodies--great for campus, not business casual) The Collection pieces re-sparked my interest in everything the company has to offer, and showed me that JC has elevated the design of even their more basic pieces.

My favorites Collection items from the fall were the golden roses pencil skirt, the duchamps-print Astrid jacket, and the cheetah print heels. The cheetah print heels are fabulous--the web image did not do them justice at all!!

    ReplyDelete
  88. Anon at 5:41: my Peony Teagan says it's a Collection piece on the label...I thought it was, but who knows. Either way, I agree... A stunning piece for $59.99! I also think it fits tts. I'm 5'7" and a 36B. I normally take an 8/10 in JC tops so I ordered the 10 ( figured wool wouldn't "give" so I better be safe). It fits perfectly and looks adorable with jeans. I could also see this dressed up with a skirt or my University fit wool pants. NTH!

  90. I don't have any recent collection pieces (unless the guava uptown tote is one; I'm not sure) but I have the library print dress and I am in love with it. I've only gotten to wear it once but I got tons of compliments... even though it's kind of weird.

The hammered silk soutache shirt from this fall was horrible. I wanted it the moment I saw it, but when I received it, I found it ill fitting AND the stupid, unnecessary side zip bulged out so much I had to return it. A huge disappointment.

I also have the glitterati mini becuase it ended up at a factory store and I got it for like $25... still not sure where/when to wear it though. Any thoughts?

  99. I am the Anon who suggested this topic. I wrote about the collection embroidered, ripped jeans in that super-long thread, so I'm sure a lot of people missed it.

Hip Slung cut denim, hand-embroidered with ornately-designed birds and flowers centered over the outside seams in the hip/thigh area and another set of birds and flowers on the lower left leg. Very pretty colors in multiple shades: pinks, reds, blues, whites, yellows and green for the foliage. The design is very pretty. The jeans fit small and have wear holes and a few rips. They are also extra-long so the effect when worn with heels and a tee is super cute. I get tons of compliments and loads of looks whenever I wear these jeans.

I believe these were purchased mid-summer 2005. Originally priced at $275 and sold out. Shipped in a gift box with an ivory ribbon and a garment bag included.

    Love them!

  100. I love my new butterfield jacket, but the fit IS bizarre- WAY more shrunken than it looks online. The sleeves were bracelet-length, maybe a bit shorter on me, but i like the look over a long-sleeved top, and will be more okay with that length in the spring. It's soft and beautiful and warm, but the ribbon placket in the front is just a little too bulky. I got it in a small, and it is definitely a really shrunken look... usually Jcrew's small size in sweaters is either just right or a little baggy (cashmere tees) on me. In any case, it's a keeper.

Also love the cashmere dresses, and the cashmere paillette henley from last year. It looks really unique under a fitted suit jacket. I guess i only tend to splurge on collection items if they're cashmere.

A few things i really REALLY wish i did get are the houndstooth Gramercy coat and the black sunburst flats.

  101. My favorite collection piece is the tulle cascade ruffle skirt. I bought this skirt in ivory after much deliberation between the two color choices of ivory and black. It is a very fun piece to wear, I feel like a ballerina in it because of all the cascading ruffles.

The ruffles and skirt are 100% silk with a synthetic lining and a grosgrain-wrapped waistband. The skirt hits slightly above my knee and accentuates my long legs. I wore this skirt to a wedding and after hours of sitting through dinner in a hot reception hall, the skirt was not wrinkled and the ruffles looked perfectly fluffy. I attribute that to the construction and the lining and the fact that I wasn't sweating in the garment either.

I thought I would only be able to wear this skirt once or twice but I have worn it at least 4 times in the 2 years since I bought it. It's definitely a party skirt that is fun to wear and makes me feel instantly pretty.

Retail for $395. Shipped in a box with a garment bag. If I ever find the black one, I'll buy it too.

  103. Maciolek Family, I have not seen storybook on sale at the stores. It went on sale online. I have a print out of the j.crew site page that says shows the sale price. I can email it to you as .pdf file. Please reply if this will work for you.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Izabela: I am not sure where you are, but ask a J.Crew store associate to put the bracelet on hold for you (for 24 hours) immediately.

The bracelet was on sale online for $79.99. (Click here for a cached page of the item.)

Stores should match online sale prices, especially if they have the merchandise in stock (e.g. you can purchase it right then and there). The store associate should give you that sale price.

Sidenote: I believe a reason the associate didn't honor the sale price is that J.Crew's new inventory system is wacky in that if the item sells out (in all styles & colors), all sale price history is gone from the associate's view- so they have no way to know if it was on sale (until the item is back in stock).

If you bring in a printout of the cache item page, you should be fine.

If the store associate still refuses to match the online price (although I doubt this), then call customer service at J.Crew. Explain to them that you have a bracelet on hold and would like the store to honor the sale price. The rep will call the store and allow you to proceed with your purchase.

Good luck and I hope you get the bracelet!

  105. Hey Leslie, Anon at 5:41 pm here.

Your are absolutely correct, the Peony Teagan shirt is a Collection piece! I just checked mine and lo and behold it has a J. Crew Collection label. I never noticed it before!

Out of curiosity I went back and checked the web description--J.Crew does not identify the shirt as Collection item, only jcrew.com/catalog only.

Collection or not, its a great piece!

  106. smarty -- I'm still waiting on my lattice cami to arrive (it's been a few days, and UPS "can't find" the tracking information, so maybe it's touring the U.S. before coming home to Chicago). But I'll let you know how it fits as soon as it does arrive.

I also love the Teagan ruffle blouse. The color is gorgeous, and it's going to look great at work with camel or charcoal pants/skirts when it gets warm enough to wear short sleeves.

Totally OT -- does anyone know why the final sale page has a "Jackets and Outerwear" section and an "Outerwear" section? Seems redundant and confusion, and a lot of actual outerwear isn't in the "Outerwear" section. Strange.

  107. Well I don't know if Rapunzel1921 took down her listings but the boucle jacket, the rose tee, and the story book charm bracelet are now gone. I think it says the charm bracelet auction ended with the buy it now option. I guess someone bit the bait.

  108. Anon at 8:36: After your original post, I wondered too, so I double checked my top and then went to the website. I could have sworn when I ordered it that it said that it was a Collection piece, but as you said, the website does not indicate that. Then...I'm in the tub tonight, flipping through an old catalog, and lo and behold....the catalog says it's Collection. Makes that $59.99 price feel even better, doesn't it???? LOL! 110. Anon at 1:54 re Florette sweater:

I have the Florette in royal violet. I bought it in November when it first went on sale. This is JMO, but it led me to conclude that "Collection" can be entirely hype.

I really like the color and style of the Florette, but the cashmere is absolutely nothing special. The cashmere is exactly the same weight, gauge, and craftsmanship as my royal violet cashmere tee, which I purchased this fall for $99.

Also, considering that it is a "Collection" item, the buttons on the Florette are pretty disappointing. I'd expected gathered rosettes with finished edges, similar to the rosette on the Fleur shoe. Instead, they are raw-edged layered chiffon circles with some beads glued in the center--the craftsmanship is not very much better than the the chiffon flowers on the $29.50 cotton tanks.

I still love my Florette, but the lack of any special materials or craftsmanship has made me very skeptical of the "Collection" line. That said, I love my Collection jeweled brown suede Helena pumps from 2006--I paid full price and they're worth every penny.

  111. kitchy7, the last time I couldn't get info from UPS (I'm so used to J.Crew shipping with UPS) is when I was entering a FedEx tracking number *blush* I'm silly sometimes, though ;)

I have 3 Collection items that I can think of:

Library Print skirt- I wear it at home to feel wonderful. It's a lot of fun, and the silk twill has a lovely weight and feel.

Tuxedo Cocktail skirt- it's alright! I have had an impossible time trying to get tops that look nice with it, so it doesn't get much use. I wore it once while working at a ball. The drape can look just a little strange IMO.

Crystal slingbacks- just absolutely gorgeous, classy and sparkly, plus they're lined in velvet- a super touch!

    ReplyDelete
  112. Fluffles, I have the library skirt too . . . how do you style yours? I absolutely had to have it when it came out but for some reason I feel frumpy in it.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I have the Jamie bag in cloud grey. I love this handbag! The tassels are so eye catching and the color goes with all my fall/winter outfits.

I'm waiting for a couple of collection pieces to arrive from my FS order. These are the Pembridge dot Camilla Dress and the Golden Roses Pencil skirt. The dress description says it comes in a garment bag - that will be interesting to see.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Hexicon, I've found so many ways to wear the Library Print skirt :) I've found it surprisingly versatile. Starting out simply, the navy bow necklace cardigan makes for a trim, cute look. If you find that frumpy, though, I recommend the Clara chiffon cardigan in either acorn or navy, on sale now, it's a steal! That'll make your look more elegant and dressier. I have a few non-Crew pieces that I like wearing with it: a very long, thick knit clingly sweater in chocolate; and a burgundy, lacy long-sleeved top that I've had for ages from NY&Co (they used to have some nice things). I also have a delicate top in a dark beige that goes nicely. I'm wondering if my Quinn cami in buttercup might not look nice as well... As for shoes, I've worn the chocolate satin heels from the final sale (can't recall the name), and a very cute Franco Sarto pair in navy. For a highly stylized look, I have J.Crew's high heeled canvas and leather riding style boots, also in chocolate.

I hope you find something that works for you! It would be a shame to let that skirt live out it's life in the closet... let me know!

  116. My two favorite collection pieces to date are last year's rugby striped town coat and this year's large Frankie bag in gray. I love all of my collection pieces and the collection store on Madison Ave has become the death of my credit card but I have pieces that I will use for a long time (especially my shoes!!!)

    ReplyDelete
  117. Hexicon,
Thank you for the info re the florette jacket. If you type in "florette jacket" on the JC search you will see that there is another one for sale. It has glass buttons and is reg $325.00 on for $249.99. It looks like the same jacket as the one you have but different buttons. Do you think so? I really like the style but given your review about the cashmere I will not buy it. My love affair with JCrew cannot withstand another quality let down right now. I'm just not ready to let go of my obsession and break up. I also purchased the library skirt and feel dowdy in it. It seems to be too much material and the print is too big for my size.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Smarty: after my astrid boucle jacket arrived minus the floppy flower, I won't be too surprised if the dress arrives in a plastic bag instead of the garment bag. I'll post the outcome either way. :) I just hope the dress fits TTS because it's a FS, otherwise it will need alterations.

  121. bellemarie: I have the dusty rose spectator peep toes and find them VERY comfortable for heels. I wear a 9 and the size I ended up finding is a 9.5 which are a little big, so I would order your regular size. Even though mine are a little roomy, they are super comfy and I absolutely love them.

    ReplyDelete
  122. *bellemarie*
I also found the spectator peep-toes to be comfy, like the Lulus. They have a very manageable heel height. I took a 7 in the Lulus (teeny tiny bit too big) and took the same in the spectators. I appreciated the fact that they ran wider than some JC shoes (ie, the Trixie). They are really cute and look great with skirts or pants! HTH!

  123. *A Bigger Closet*

Your Astrid came without the bloomin' flower! That's awful--awful QC and awful because those flowers can be revived to be really cute!

I've been hesitant about buying FS merchandise because I am worried that many items will be returns from the TURKEY, HOHOHO and other recent promotions, and may be damaged or worse, obviously used/worn!

One of my December orders came in a plastic bag lined with Talbot's tissue paper.(How does that happen?) That's not awful, but I know others have suffered worse because JC apparently does little to check the quality of returns or even spruce them up for re-distribution. FS or not, if I receive anything that is not up to snuff, its going back for an exchange or gift card!

    ReplyDelete
  124. Fluffles -- oh, I've done that too. In fact, during the crazy ordering season of Christmas, I tried a tracking number on both UPS and FedEx and couldn't come up with anything, only to discover later when the package arrived that it was delivered via USPS. That J. Crew shipping department, always one step ahead of me...

Also, I have the library print skirt in a size that's sadly a bit too small for me right now. When I could fit in it, I was fond of pairing it with a boatneck cashmere sweater in honey glaze, Cole Haan chocolate-colored heels, and my Elsa Peretti large round pendant in brown lacquer from Tiffany.

Also speaking of the library print skirt, if anyone ever wants to part with a 10 or 12, I'd be more than happy to pay original price for it! I'm so sad I can't wear it right now, I loved it so much.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I had a on-line order issue today. I lucked out and found a pair of size 0 shell pink shorts for $9.99! Naturally I ordered them. They arrived and they were a size 6 packed and sealed in a size 0 bag. I am a big on-line shopper and never have I had this happen before. JC tells me I can get a full refund (FS) and they will give me free shipping on my next order. We will see if they stick to the latter or not. I love J Crew but I am starting to think I need to spread my shopping wings.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Leslie and Smarty: thanks so much! I am looking forward to them ; ) - glad to hear the sizing is as I guessed! I'm going through my bill and thinking it's a good thing the spectators, although a Fall item, will work for the spring!

I only wish the JC card reward balances wouldn't expire. I'm guessing we can't buy gift certificates with them? Never checked the fine print.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Anon at 12:12, I can actually one up you on funny mix ups. Years ago I ordered a pair of denim shorts from Victorias Secret (Hey, it was the early nineties!!!) They came with the correct item sticker - emblazoned upon a pair of fancy pantyhose. good ole' quality control!

    ReplyDelete
  128. Anon at 11:02, I think the glass buttoned version of the Florette is from last year and came only in black. I didn't know it was back on the website--there were a few on eBay this fall. The version with glass buttons sounds better--the buttons were a real disappointment to me. (I had to send my Fleur shoes back because the rosettes were violet but the shoes were blue--if the shoes had been cheaper I might have taken the rosettes off the shoes and put them on the sweater!)

Thanks for the tips, Fluffles and Kitchy. I think I have the same problem with the library skirt as Anon at 11:02. I had the skirt taken in at the waist, and I think this exaggerated the typical dirndl problem of too much fabric in the hips.

Last summer I ordered a chocolate brown boatneck cashmere tee on FS to wear with the library skirt but of course the sweater was huge and boxy and compounded the problem. Honey glaze would be perfect if I could overcome my fear of yellows. But the skirt does look great with the aforementioned Helena shoes--works perfectly with the brown suede and golden brown jewels!

  134. Reading this thread makes me so glad I didn't buy the library skirt. I really liked the print, but I could tell the fit was awful - just such an unattractive cut. What woman, regardless of size, wants to look poofy at the waist & down?

J.Crew really misses the boat with some items - I was looking at the new silk halter dress, which is entirely shapeless. Who wants to tie a potato sack around their neck, even if it's made of silk.

  135. RE: Price matching

Was in my B&M yesterday returning some gifts. Noticed tons of Portland cardigans, but they were not 29.99 like the website. I have the navy Portland and LOVE it. Asked the SA if he would match the online price. He said sure & called from the red phone to confirm that ALL colors were 29.99. The SA took an additional 30% off so each cardigan cost $20.99 (I got . This is a fantastic cardigan and I highly recommend. I usually wear a small in J Crew sweaters but took an XS in this one. I'm small but have wide shoulders.

  136. I have the Duchamp print Astor jacket. The photo on the website does not do it justice, this piece is really gorgeous IRL.

The pattern on the jacket is really striking and it has a very ladylike silhouette. The wool is soft and refined and the tailoring is impeccable.

  137. Just wondering if any of you who have the Shimmy Dress received it in a garment bag like it says it is supposed to come in? Mine just came in the standard plastic bag and it was hung folded over a hanger. I was a little disappointed in the presentation for a "collection" item. Adorable dress though!!

  138. It's hit and miss with Collection pieces being shipped in boxes with bows, garment bags, etc. I often order things in multiple sizes, and some of the Collection items in the same order arrive differently (e.g., 1 coat in a box, 1 not; 1 golden roses skirt in a box, 1 not). And if the item is a return, then it's really hit and miss.

  140. Elena,
About your question related to Shimmy Dress..yes, my dress came in the wrapped box with the garment bag. For you to get this "extra" goods, you have to buy when the item is not on sale. Any Collection you buy on sale will come in normal plastic bag.

  143. Can I ask you all for some help? I own and love the Collection Metallic Jacquard jacket from about a year ago (http://www.jcrew.com/browse/single_product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441767134&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302023894&srcCode=SHPG09)

I usually wear it with jeans and a cami, but was considering it for my upcoming reunion, which will be dressy. However I can't figure out what to wear with! I never dreamed it would be so hard. What would you do?
