Jenna Lyons Wants to Help You Pack

"Thanks!" to mommydearest who let us know about an entry in the latest print edition of the Wall Street Journal that features J.Crew's Jenna Lyons. Mommydearest was also nice to scan the image for us to view. :)
A Foolproof Packing Plan—Jenna Lyons, creative director for J.Crew

"My packing trick is to simply pick a color story and stay within it. All camel and grey with one shot of red, all navy and white with a splash of green, khaki and black with white accents. It makes my life easy and I don't have to plan outfits!"
I personally like to travel with a lot of neutrals. This way everything goes with everything else. Boring, yeah. But it works for me. For color (and to keep me warm), I add a red or orange scarf.

Do you agree with Jenna's advice for packing right? What piece of advice would you share?

  1. Heh- colour story all the way, although it helps that the colour story of my life is J Crew burnt twig! I could probably grab stuff randomly and it would all match!

  2. Funny, there are days I want to help her pack.

  3. Take at least an extra set of undies in your carry-on.

  4. Hmmm. Is that an ad? Interesting strategy and consistent with recent Mickey and Marisa commentary ... positioning JC as "owning" color.

Happily, they are delivering ... the fall rollout colors have been delicious, and from what we hear of Spring, there is more to come.

  5. WMM, I was going to say the exact same thing!!! I think someone is secretly perusing various JCA blogs at night after work and poaching their fabulous ideas!

(ps my verification word is "hints". Hmmmm)

  6. This is hardly a new concept as I remember my grandmother's suitcase full of mix and max neutrals. I don't think anyone is poaching.

  7. Has anyone heard if it's true that Marissa resigned yesterday? That would really be a terrible loss.

  8. She's not so creative if she's lifting ideas from this blog or dani bp's. The should just call her the director.

  9. @WMM, wellfedfred - I was going to say the same thing, it sounds like she took a page out of DaniBP's book!

  10. DaniBP had the color story packing posts and xoxo had the neutrals with colorful accessories. As kitsmommy said, neither of the concepts are new. This is in the same line as Mickey inventing casual Fridays. How do those people get their giant egos through the door in the morning?!

  11. Thanks guys you are very kind!
Does Jenna read our blogs? Maybe Mickey told her to. I know for sure he read my packing for Florida post with the color-story concept last winter. In my geeky way I sent him the link to express my love for my JCrew wardrobe and he emailed me back. Twice!

xoxo does neutrals with colorful accessories so well, she's a super smart shopper and packer and I've learned lots from her.

  12. re: Marissa -- Gap is supposed to name a new "adult" designer shortly?

  13. I'm not saying it's a brand new concept, but one that had been discussed in the recent past using the exact same term by Danibp. Interesting coincidence at the very least, no?

  15. in the know, does that mean that Marissa did indeed resign?

  16. Oh no!!! I really hope that Marissa doesn't resign! I have mentioned numerous times before that I really prefer her style over Jenna's, and I also think she is one of the main reasons the women's line has taken a turn for the better lately. I will be very sad to see her go!

  17. My ps told me that Marissa is gone - they were told yesterday. Per Mickey, it's a good move for her, but they weren't told where she's going.

  18. Marissa is gone... I'm with FFM, that is very bad news for the women's line.
I don't know anything about this. Does anyone know why she would leave? And I guess where she's going is also an important question!

  19. I'm shocked and SAD. I loved everything she did for the company. But I think mentioned before on another post She has too much talent to stay there forever. I can only think she's going somewhere more high fashion. I Also can imagine she was getting too big for Jenna. I'm dyin to know!

  20. Sorry to hear Marissa has resigned but i wouldn't start speculating about why. People move on from jobs all the time and especially in fashion. Marissa Webb is good but let's not forget about all the other "no-name" designers/employees busting their butt off without articles and or blog appreciation. J Crew will be fine without her-this just gives some hard-working (internal or external to JC) the opportunity to share his/her vision with us. I'm excited to see who they will bring on in her place!

  22. @kitsmommy, I second that! I travel a lot for my job and I've been packing this way for years.

  23. DaniBP - that is so cool Mickey emailed you back. You do a wonderful job of advertising for JC. I've bought many things after seeing them on your blog.
