Weekly Share: Other JCrew-like Retailers

This is the weekly "Other JCrew-like Retailers" post (similar to the "Off On A Tangent" posts), where we can share our finds from other retailers that have offerings similar to J.Crew (like Anthropologie, LE Canvas, Gap, BR, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and the like.)

If you have recently encountered items that are similar to J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including experiences with certain merchandise pieces, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. I am part of BR Insiders and just got a survey on an absolutely hideous batch of graphic tees (totally shapeless and untailored tanks in sheer fabrics with nonsensical phrases often including a smattering of several romance languages), so we have that to look forward to this summer. =(

    1. Alyssa, my sister got that survey yesterday, too. We laughed at the graphic tees. She's like, I don't want to buy any of these. I told her to be absolutely brutal in her assessment. Ugh, stores should get the hint - anyone that wants a graphic tee probably already has one (or two, or three)!!!

    2. Glad I wasn't the only one they made cringe! I was brutal in the survey too, told them I would wear them only for painting or sweaty workouts, and the tanks looked like something you picked up off the floor of the closet of a fraternity brother- so gray and baggy with the giant armholes!

  2. My local Gap is closing on Monday. It's been in the mall for forever.
I feel bad for the people that work there. It's also a shame for consumers, it's the only decent B&M store we have in our area.
Our mall is horrendous, so nothing good will replace it.

On the bright side, I got several pairs of their cords for $6 and some leather ballet flats for $6. Their cords are my favorite, and their classic flats are a nice staple. Inexpensive, so I don't flip out when/if they get ruined.

    1. jlc119 ours is closing too on Monday! I buy a lot from Gap online but the selection in the store sucked. Once when I was returning an online order to the store the SA got snippy with me & said that if I didn't start buying more in-store that they'd be closing soon. I guess I shoulder that responsibility, ha!

    3. Wow, a Gap closing - how the mighty have fallen... I have to say I have not been a fan of their stuff this fall/ winter, though I have been a regular customer for eons. None of ours seem to be shutting though (yet). So many retailers having problems - of course we are losing Target altogether up here in Canada, but there have been several others disappear in the past 6 months.

    4. I used to wander over to Gap occasionally, and would usually find some nice surprises here and there, but I never go now- the main Montreal store was redesigned about a year ago and it's horrendous- purposefully crowded and claustrophobic. You can stand still and just watch people crashing into displays and each other (and then into you!). I've never seen anything like it! I actually felt compelled to write to them about it, not that they would do anything.

  4. The Boden Spring stuff looks very nice. More and more I find that I like there stuff better on their website. So reminiscent of J Crew their heyday.

  5. Loft jeans. I know Gigi sings their praises and I have a pair of skinnies that I'm on the fence about...Anyway, I need a new pair of bootcut (yes, people still wear them, especially with wedge espadrilles...don't judge...). I've had a pair of JCrew Bootcut 29T forever, they fit great after I have the waist taken in; the fit was too straigtht in the hips for me. I also had them hemmed to about 35 inches. Of course, the only bootcut JC has now are black or white, nothing that is just regular old denim.

Enter Loft. I ordered several pairs on the last 50% sale, both curvy and modern fit, in talls, 27s and 28s. LOVE THEM. They are almost exactly the same fit as the JC bootcuts considering my waist alterations. The Modern is a bit looser in the waist and I wouldn't take it in but it's the most similar. The length is inconsistent, advertised as 36 but the pairs I had the length depended on the wash/color (the lighter pairs were all the same and 36, one darker wash was 34.5, another wash was 35).

I'm really happy with these and was afraid I'd not find a bootcut that I liked ever again. I only keep on pair in rotation, because they don't get worn that often, but I still like my wedges/bootcut combo alot. I'm old, I guess!

    1. Kim - There are reasons why the bootcut works for ladies over other styles. Usually it involves the hips. Having that extra width at the bottom probably balances on your figure better than skinnies. I'm so glad that you tried Loft jeans. They recently brought the bootcut back, which makes their range of options wide. They go from skinny skinny all the way to boyfriend, with bootcut in between of course ;). Thanks for the mention.

  7. Does anyone know if the current offerings at Banana Republic are the first rollout of Marissa Webb designs? They look like it to me but I am not sure. Has anyone tried any of the latest BR offerings? Thanks! Sara
