"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Dislike that I place a small order and have it delivered to my work address and it comes one piece at a time for days...Don't even want to know what my coworkers are saying behind my back. I tried to explain but I think that just made me look more pathetic. I do understand if they don't do that, I probably won't get some of the stuff I ordered. Hopefully, the last piece 2 pieces will both come today and not one today and one tomorrow.

    1. You are not alone. I can only imagine what my UPS person thinks of me. There were FIVE J Crew packages on my doorstep yesterday. Almost everything is shipping separately. Gap has starting shipping from stores, too. One Gap order of four t-shirts came in four separate packages. UGH.

    2. I hate when that happens at home, but at work it would be really bad. I had one blow off my porch, one of several envelopes. I didn't find it right away - it was over in the bushes. Seriously, just put it all in one package, J. Crew. I know it saves them money to do it this way, but it's annoying and embarrassing and an incentive not to order too much from them.

    3. shopalot, GAP is terrible with this too, I agree.

    4. oh my god... this ^ times a thousand.

almost every time i place an order for more than one item, it ships in multiple packages (both jcrew and gap)

    5. One of the envelopes I received contained a necklace shipped from a store. No box, just the necklace in the velvet pouch. The chain was horribly knotted and twisted. I just put it in the "returns" bag with the receipt. What a mess. I'm fine with shipping from stores but jeez, package the items correctly or don't bother sending to me at all.

    6. Yes, this practice is so annoying! I got 5 envelopes from them one day last week. I guess I should be grateful though, one package had two items in it...

    7. Echoing the same thing here. Mine will arrive in three separate shipments. Seriously?! Then I get the dreaded e-mail and phone call to say an item I chose is no longer available. Naturally the one I was looking forward to most. *sigh*...

    8. Well, Thank Heavens, they both came today so I only have to get the look once and not again tomorrow. Here is another complaint...Please take the giant JCREW off the packaging if you are going to ship like this. It would make it easier to hide.

    9. If nothing else, it seems a bit irresponsible from an environmental standpoint - multiple pieces of packaging rather than just one seems almost offensive given public awareness of this kind of issue. Interestingly I have never had this happen with JC, I wonder if shipping here to Canada forces them to consolidate their items better. (Of course given our dropping dollar, I won't be ordering much from them anymore anyway)

    10. Ha today I heard UPS- package hitting ground...so I open the door there it is two shoe boxes, a box and an package....and I yell in my common area/lobby: jackpot....and then walk backyard into my apt hauling my loot....

  2. Just a vent about the lack of promotions on the Lady Day Coat. Been eyeing this for years and could never find my size 8 Black. Finally bit the bullet to buy one before Christmas when one popped up in my size but the promotion at that time didn't apply. I thought by January, they would be discounted but by the time it is, the size/color I want will be gone.Trying to decide if a $400 (with tax) coat is worth it. Also, I really wanted the Majesty Peacoat in the Sandstone color (light beige) but it only came in a bone color this year.

    1. I am surprised at how few winter coats are on sale/promo right now.

    2. Sportsmom94 - be patient! I bought a red Lady Day coat for $90 a couple of years ago and was very pleased. Your size and color will pop back - I promise...

    3. I agree with Cousy, you still have time to get a deal. I remember purchasing a popular coat (Dublin green cocoon) a few years back for a steal. It was on February 17 and the reason I remember that is because it was on my husbands birthday and he was annoyed that I bought something on his birthday :-P

  3. coats have been a big miss for me this year. It usually is my favorite form J Crew. I feel all the promos were a big miss as well. Seems what I wanted was never included.
The sale section and final sale are always my biggest vent...not many of us can get to the warehouse or clearance location for the real end of season sale.... J Crew for once lets just reduce items and get on with spring....

    1. really disappointed with the coats this year too. I love my long wintress puffer I bought last year, wanted to get a shorter puffer this year, but the only ones they offered didn't have hoods! Also agree with previous comment about lady day coat... can never get one in my size/color at the right time...

    2. Julie, those short ones are so expensive! $188 for the lightweight puffer jacket, no thanks. It's not even down. I would have bought it if weren't hanging out at full price. That jacket isn't worth even half that price.

    3. I totally agree, usually I buy at least one new coat from J Crew every winter. Last year it was 3, this year I bought only one and returned it. Luckily I have lots to choose from. I pulled out one of my favorites to wear today, the Stadium Cloth Engineer Coat from 2011. I love this coat!! It is perfect to wear with jeans, cords which is pretty much my work wardrobe during the winter.

    4. The coats used to be so beautiful, I notice also the fashion bloggers are not wearing jcrew coats any longer...

      Delete
    5. I wonder if it has to do with fashion bloggers opting to showcase other brands that sponsor vs jcrew that doesnt c/o with bloggers?

  4. Agree with the lack of promotion on classic coat pieces this year; Lady Day Coat is a good example. I wonder whether this has to do with JCrew's poor retail performance. So they are holding promotions on classic pieces because people are more likely to purchase it even without promotion.

  5. I just received an email from J. Crew announcing new arrivals. I don't see anything new on the site. Am I missing something?

    1. They are the last new arrivals. The cable knit sweater, the blue mid-weight coat, the green and navy print.

    2. I know...what new arrivals? J.Crew you are so desperate...

    3. Good, I thought it was just me that did not see any 'New Arrivals'.

    1. I was told today, they didn't have any new catalogs and hadn't heard if they were getting one.

  7. I emailed customer service the other day requesting a price adjustment on the colorblock lace front sweater that I purchased full price and then went on promotion the following week as part of the select 40% off items. I received a response back from CS stating they would only adjust the prices within seven days. I request price adjustments often within a reasonable amount of time and never usually have a problem. I even did one in store a few weeks ago and the girl was most pleasant, saying that she hates to hear that people return and rebuy when they could just get the price adjusted...the inconsistency is what is so bothersome. So I replied to the email stating that it was a shame that I would have to return and repurchase the sweater, (it was a $42 savings!) and a different CS rep emailed me back saying she'd be happy to make the adjustment...um...get your story straight. Either you have a 7 day policy or you don't. My guess is you don't since most of my adjustments are not usually within 7 days. ok. Rant over. and the multiple package thing....ugh...I hold my breath waiting to see if I'll have the same tracking number for all of my pieces!!

    1. If a price drops I usually return & rebuy. My store told me I don't have to do that, they will gladly price adjust. CS made me feel so bad for asking I stopped!

    2. Anne, I am glad you got your price adjustment! I emailed CS last night for an order I placed on 12/30. Both items dropped considerably in price and I haven't worn them yet. I was very nice in my email but I did say that I could return them and re-buy but wanted to ask first. They gave it to me but also gave me the one time only lecture.

  8. Honestly, I love J.Crew--I've read all the JCA posts complaining about the styling, etc. and I usually disagree/ignore them, but I will finally admit that I think you all are right. I honestly have no desire to buy anything right now. I only liked a few things from the so-called "roll-out" they did after Christmas (pathetic) and all of those items will be 50% off soon, so I just wait. I'm so bored with it--I used to wake up and check the J.Crew site and my wishlist every morning and I just realized I hadn't done that once this week. It's a shame because almost all of my clothes come from J.Crew, but if things don't get better I'm going to have to go somewhere else...

  9. I know this has been said a lot but don't you just love it when a full price item you want is completely sold out online and customer service swears that country wide store inventory is nill and yet that same item appears online in a full color and size run the day after the 40% off ends. They must have been hard at work all that night making them huh?

    1. I *hate* that line from CS. Especially because when I call around to a few stores I usually manage to track at least one down.

      Delete
    2. That's one way that Talbots trumps J.Crew. Their Facebook team will track anything down for you if you ask them -- they almost always can find it even when it's sold out online.

      Delete
    3. Talbots is terrible about returns, though. I've been burned a couple of times because I had an item too long, like even a week outside of their window. J. Crew is awesome when this happens.

    1. Or maybe certain items have dropped? I'm confused because the Lambswool Classic Fair Isle in regular sizes have a starting price of $39.99 + 40% off but the petite version has a starting price of $84.99. That is a puzzlement.

      Delete
    2. I saw that too. I hate when JC charges more for tall than they do for regular sizes. The extra fabric or lack of it in the case of petite does not warrant an extra $45. I noticed this same pricing game with the tooth pick cords! Argh!!! On a happier note I did pick up the Lambswool Classic fair isle sweater in both the multi combo and neutral ( I've been eyeing it and with the recent price drop it was only 23 after 40% off ).
