This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. I've been stalking the French knot tippi in ivory FOREVER, so I was so excited when it popped up on Monday early morning. And of course, today I get the dreaded phone call that my order is being cancelled because of lack of inventory. ARGHHHHHHH.

    1. What size do you need? I have a small that I've never worn I'm willing to part with.

    2. MS, that happened to me with the houndstooth tippi in green and I was really peeved, because they charged my card and everything, and i was so excited (i've been hunting for it FOREVER) and then a few days after the order they cancelled and refunded. not cool.

  2. I have to say I've been little disappointed with CS across the board... and not just with j.crew. I had a few questions about certain items and I either never got an email back or got an email saying they're working on it but nothing further after that. Jcrew (retail and factory), Anthro, Lord & Taylor and even Frye. :/

  3. JR - me too! Nordstrom (of all places!) and Restoration Hardware in my case...

  4. Not pleased with my wool cashmere turtleneck sweater which everyone raves about. Major pilling after each wear which requires a good ten minutes with a comb. I'm glad I didn't pay full price, but even the price I paid was too much considering all of the work required for one item of clothing.

    1. Hi Liz,

Is this turtleneck item 09266? My size just came back in stock, and I was thinking about getting a couple...but if pilling is an issue, that's a red flag for sure! TIA!

    2. I just noticed some pilling on my ivory colored one this morning. I think I will return the one I haven't worn yet w/tags still on. If the pilling is bad enough, I think J. Crew will take back the ones we've worn. I'm hoping that it's a bit of an initial shedding, wishful thinking probably. I really want this one to be good, I love the shape and feel of it. I have a comb but I'm not interested in owning clothing I have to work on that much.

    3. Liz and Cate, thanks for the update on the sweater! I was so tempted after all the good reviews, but resisted b/c the price seems so steep for a sweater that isn't 100% cashmere...

  5. Yes, it is that item. Maybe others can weigh in, but I am not a fan. At the very least, don't pay FP!

    1. Thanks Liz - I appreciate the feedback. It's a great looking sweater, but I ain't got no time for combing sweaters!!

  6. Fabric vent. Madewell has some lovely merino wool sweaters but all are "dry clean." I took a chance and washed one on cold (ice cold thanks to the polar vortex) and it shrank noticeably, while my other wool items did not. *sigh*

For Jcrew, some of my cotton button ups have shrunk in the dryer (even though it's machine dry-able). I'm pretty good about hang drying except in winter, when it's so cold and items take longer to dry. I understand shrinking the first time, but shrinking every time is annoying. This doesn't happen to my $20 100% cotton Uniqlo shirts. So I know what I want is not impossible Jcrew :)

  7. to clarify, the sweaters are not "dry clean only" and shrank from the wash. i know better than to put wool in the dryer!

  8. Okay, now I'm really irritated. JC did a WWFIFY on a sweater a few days ago, and came up empty handed. Then a SA did a search and came up empty handed too. Not a huge deal - I missed out (or so I thought).

The sweater popped up in my size this morning on sale! Grrr.

    1. This happens to me all.the.time!!! Its so aggravating. They need to have better inventory systems...one day I was looking everywhere for a specific blazer. My SA said the warehouse showed for 2, but when I called they said none available. Low and behold early next am, 2 popped up (when the 40 off promo was finished!)....

    2. Sometimes I think that J.Crew purposefully puts a set limit on the quantity of some items and sizes. I have noticed that often once a sale is over, the item pops back in stock. It probably helps with sales, because if people see that an item is almost out, they might just use the current promo/mark down and purchase an item.

  9. I was really looking forward to buying my first pair of opera length gloves- disappointed it was only offered in that pattern/colors. I wanted long plain black ones.

  10. So when JCrew is fullfilling an order not from the warehouse but from a store what happens exactly? I had a very annoying situation with an order where it seems that the item I had ordered fp was on sale in the store and they applied the sale price. All good except that my invoice showed the original price and I didn't receive any notification of a price change so for what I knew I paid fp. The only reason I found out is that I returned the item and they gave me back less than what I had paid or I thought I had paid. Now, had I paid with a credit card it wouldn't be a big dea, probably, but I paid with a gift card so I have no idea where that money went. Now it seems that it is happening again with an item that I ordered and hasn't shipped yet. I paid a promo price but I found out that it is much cheaper in store right now and fs. Just wondering if someone else had encountered this problem and how you dealt with it.

  11. Hi Ema,
    J. Crew should fix that situation for you. Did you order through a VPS or online? In my experience, unless you are buying at the store, you cannot get the store prices. You may be able to get the store price if your SA at the B&M store does the search for you. However, if you had the invoice/receipt showing that you paid fp, they should refund the full amount to you.

  12. I received a factory beaded sweatshirt for Christmas, and I it was my usual size xs, it's literally like a belly shirt on me. It's SO short! I'm just 5'3. Is anyone else having this problem?

  14. The mens sweaters from this past fall/winter pill more than any sweater I've ever owned. Yes, that's a superlative statement. Yes, I'm being utterly serious.

I took two sweaters (the rustic merino crewnecks with elbow patches) back to J. Crew on 5th Ave about 2-3 months after purchasing and showed them what the sweaters looked like. The manager was embarrassed at how bad it was and gave me my money back immediately.

I then purchased one of the classic merino v-necks, as I had never had an issue with them in the past. Same thing has begun to happen, and I'm planning on taking it back to discuss with them.

It's insulting how bad the quality has gotten, while the price has remained the same or gone up. J. Crew is losing all of my loyalty, and soon I'll just be using the catalogs for inspiration.
