Product Review: Golden Roses

A big "thanks!" to kitchy7 who provided wonderfully detailed reviews for several Golden Roses items. The following are her great reviews:

I love the golden roses print. The variety of golden yellows, oranges, and light and dark grays is truly unique, like a special find in an English vintage shop. To some, the yellows and oranges might seem too bright, but in real life, they present themselves in a far more subdued manner. They are helped along by a full spectrum of grays and a lack of crisp lines in the pattern: just as in a watercolor painting, the edges are beautifully softened.

I love the golden roses print so much, in fact, that I have collected several of the items available in this print. Even better, I managed to buy most of them on sale, as all of them still are on the website. Here is my review of those items:

Golden Roses Renée Coat

Item 99290
Regular: $425.00
Now: $199.99

I think this is a stunning coat. It arrived in a J.Crew gift box tied up with a red ribbon that I couldn’t pull off fast enough. I pulled it on, and it fit like a dream. The shoulders were perfectly roomy, and it fell in a perfect slight A-line. For those of you that like a slimmer fit, you might consider sizing down.

I think this coat is probably best worn as a statement piece and not in competition with other bright colors or patterns. For example, it looks fantastic paired with simple jeans, a charcoal turtleneck sweater, and tall black boots. That said, it also looks very pretty with yellow.

The Renée coat is a lighter jacket, more useful in trench coat weather than truly cold weather. It’s made of 78% wool and 22% silk and has an acetate lining. To the touch, it feels a bit rougher than some might like. I don’t mind, though, because I’m so in love with it. The fabric is flexible, too, and not stiff like the watercolor leopard Kate coat was, and that makes all the difference in the world to me.

Golden Roses Chérie Cami
Item 99921
Regular: $88.00
Now: $59.99

The Chérie cami is made of 100% silk and feels incredibly lightweight, soft, and delicate. The website description says it wears as well with jeans as it does under a suit, and I completely agree.

The collar adds a nice touch, separating it even further from an ordinary cami. The cut is definitely on the roomy side, so I would suggest sizing down unless you prefer a more billowy fit.

Golden Roses Pencil Skirt
Item 99460
Regular: $198.00
Now: $139.99

The skirt is, of course, just as pretty as the coat. It’s also made of the same fabric mixture: 78% wool and 22% silk (so if you have seen and felt the skirt, you know exactly what the coat looks and feels like).

The length is perfect for professional settings at 24 ½ inches, and it features a back vent for easy walking (a must for me, as I tend to take long, fast strides). I think it’s sized in the same way as other J.Crew pencil skirts from this season, so those of you that size up in the higher-waisted pencil skirts will likely want to do the same with this one.

A super big "thanks!" to kitchy7 for her amazing reviews! :)

What are your thoughts on the Golden Roses items (do you like/dislike any of the styles, designs, fabrics)? Are you considering or already have purchased any of these items? If so, please let us know. :)

  2. I think the golden roses print is lovely - very girly and feminine.

OT - J.Crew updated its sale section with the following message "the j.crew sale of the season - FINAL SALE IS BACK"

I just scanned a few items and the prices have not been further reduced.

  3. As kitchy7 and i have discussed many times, I love this pattern. I have managed to acquire both the skirt and the jacket. I love the feel and weight of the fabric.

I found the skirt true to size and am still deciding on the sizing of the jacket. My initial thoughts are that it runs a bit snug in the shoulders, especially if planning to layer. I have broad shoulders, though, and as usual with most jackets where i've sized up, i would have liked it more fitted in the midsection.

After this review and because i do like this print so much, i am seriously considering the other products. The golden roses makes up for my not getting the Giverny print this past season. :)

  4. Yep, I'm in SoCal too and am up late enough to see the Final Sale landing page launch. Disappointed to see that there are no reductions. Here's to hoping that the reductions come soon!

  5. I love this print and really wanted the clutch but missed out. I might get the cami.

  6. I actually was just going to comment about the golden roses cami! I just received mine today and the sizing was way too big like other J.Crew camis this season. I ordered a 6, down from my regular size 8, because I heard that it was TTS-a size too big. But I found that even being one size down, it was too large. So, I just called J.Crew and re-ordered a 4. And very kindly, since I had originally ordered it during the free shipping period, they waived my shipping! :)

BTW, I had ordered the ivory Cherie cami in 8 as well to see which I liked better. Golden roses won out completely. :)

  7. Yikes! Final Sale is back. I just clicked the link on one of the rose items and noticed the big red bold letters. Lovely.

  8. Uggghhhh...They say final sale is back like we should be excited. Instead, we get the same sale prices as yesterday (not further reduced), no free shipping, and now we can't return the stuff if we don't like it.

  9. anon@ 1246.. I agree.. I dont understand why they're marketing it as if it's a gift or something...They could have at least eased it back in w/ further reductions. Lovely.

  10. Kate -- keep an eye out on the sale page. I caught the clutch when it popped back up, and I've seen it a couple of times since. Good luck!

  11. whew - I must have made it just under the wire!! I bought like 7 things tonight just before the switch back to final!!

  12. Ok, so unless this "final sale" is a preamble to another percentage off thing, I don't get this as a strategy. I suppose they think gift shopping is over so there is no point to NOT having final sale. BUT no price changes that I could see.....

  13. Why would JC bring back final sale BEFORE X-mas? Who is going to risk buying items that they cannot return or exchange?

    ReplyDelete
  14. JCREW WE HATE FINAL SALE. WHAT A STUPID MOVE TO MAKE. I HOPE ALL PURCHASES FROM THE SALE SECTION NOW HALT COMPLETELY.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ack! Final sale means I am going back to shopping for JCrew items on eBay (either way I can't return anything so I might as well get an even steeper bargain for the same risk!) Great sadness...

    ReplyDelete
  16. Instead of complaining, write JCrew an email and tell them your feelings about the final sale. I just did. I am not going to be ordering. I know people say that all the time and cave but I really mean it...that is why I bought a lot recently b/c I knew final sale would return and I would not buy...

    ReplyDelete
  17. Final sale, NOOOOOOO!!!

Sigh, I guess my ridealongs will have to be full price for a while. How I LOATHE the final sale.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Final Sale returning already...
That's JCrew telling us Bah Humbug!

  19. FABULOUS review Kitchy7...thank you! The Golden Roses print is really beautiful...congratulations on all your purchases. :)

  20. What a marketing gimmick from JCrew...The final sale is for people who do not follow JCrew as closely as us Aficionadas and are willing to pay the same price that the items were on "regular" sale price. I am no fool, JCrew!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I've written, too, and encourage others to do the same. It can't hurt, and maybe if enough voices are heard, change will come to J.Crew :-)

  22. Some items have been reduced... similar to other instances where the main sale page doesn't show the new sale price, but if you click on the item, you can see the new price. For instance, the cashmere bateau is now $69.99, most colors of the long-sleeve cashmere tee are now $79.99, etc. That said, I don't see MUCH that's been reduced... and like everyone else, I am pretty unhappy that Final Sale is back. Yuck!

  23. I was so excited to see this review as I just ordered the cami 2 days ago! Thanks, now I am even more excited to see it. I am a little concerned about sizing though... I did order 1 size down, but perhaps I should have gone 2-eek! another reason that Final Sale is a bummer-arghhh.

  25. I have the golden rose cami, and I do love it. I have received many compliments on it also. It looks great with greys, browns, blacks, creams, tans and blacks.
I also wear it with the yellow crystal button colorblock cardigan (which has grey undertones) and it looks great together.

It is a roomy fit, so I cannot wear it alone (too big around the arms), but where I live, it is too cold to do that anyway.

  26. Kitchy7- What colors are you wearing on top with your golden roses skirt? I love the print!

  27. Thanks for the review about the golden roses. :) I have been curious about this print and haven't yet seen it in person!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thanks for the review but this print it not for me...very ugly in my humble opinion....like something an old lady would wear...or I would find at Goodwill.

  29. Anon, here are some ways I've been wearing the skirt, along with a couple of other ideas:

  30. The cami sizing is terrible! I'm a size 0 or 2 in jackets, or XS in other J.Crew tops but this cami is way too big. I'd need a -2 to fit properly.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Has anyone had success with the golden roses dress? I tried it but it was horribly wrong on me; just seemed to hit in all the wrong places. I was just wondering about others opinions.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm afraid I'll have to go against the popular belief here...I haven't seen this pattern in person, but I'm not a big fan of flower patterns such as this one of golden roses...Sorry, but it reminds me of my grandma! I might (I mean, "might") do the top, but certainly not the coat. But of course, that's just my opinion. I'm sure this pattern works for many others. :)

I agree, it does look a little grandma-ish. That said, I love it! I think it has a cool 70s vibe. I could totally see how that might not be what everyone is going for though :)

  34. I loved Golden Roses until I purchased the jacket. In person, I was so disappointed. The fit and style were OK, my problem was that this is a terribly overwhelming pattern. It would make gorgeous draperies or look wonderful on a settee. I bet the skirt is even quite cute. However, the jacket is just too much of a good thing. The jacket is all about seeing the jacket and not the person. I wear my clothes to show off me, not the other way around.

  35. I am returning the cami. The style is great but the print looks a little too grandma-ish. Reminds me of a sofa pattern in my granny's house when I was growing up. The metallic vita cami, on the other hand, looks much more contemporary. And it's handwash, no drycleaning needed.

    ReplyDelete
  36. The vita cami is fabulous! A more flattering fit compared to the tent-like Golden Roses cami. The print is just plain ugly.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I have the skirt and I love it. Paired with solids, I don't find the print overwhelming at all. I didn't try the jacket. I am waiting for the golden roses cami to ship. I'm a bit worried since I've had 3 items cancel in the last 2 days. I hope I get it!

If the items that were canceled popped up in the final sale, I would buy them since I know that I want to keep them. But I'm not buying anything else. I won't take a chance on things I can't return if they don't work.

  38. I love the golden roses print, and I also have the giverny dress (another one of my favorites).

I got the dress and it fits like the abstract rose dress I got. I am curvy and the dress hits at all the right places, and it looked very professional when paired with an astrid jacket.

I ordered the skirt, but hated the itchy/rough fabric so sent it back. I suspected the coat is made with the same fabric, so I didn't bother trying.

I also got the peeptoe flats with the golden roses and am contemplating on whether to keep or return. I really wanted the Carmen instead as I normally don't wear flats to work.

  39. how would the cherie cami look on busty girls???

    ReplyDelete
  40. The cami is not flattering on busty gals. It makes me look preggers. It's like a tent.
