"Thanks!" to Elizabeth (in this post), who shared the following promotion for Memorial Day Weekend.

J.Crew is offering customers 20% off and free shipping on your first purchase when you open a J.Crew Credit Card . This offer expires June 5, 2011. To apply online, click here. The fine print includes:

Not going to lie, I was not expecting to see this promotion today. Thought it might be a little different for Memorial Day weekend. Oh well!

Were you expecting to see a different promotion today? If you are not currently a card holder, do you think this promotion will entice you? Please share!

  1. Wow, really, J Crew? I'm already a cardholder. J.C. must want me to spend my money at other retailers who are offering better promos this Memorial Day weekend.

  2. I did think they would do something like 25% or 30% off all items with FS. When they extended the previous promo to Thursday, I thought it was to make the Memorial Day promo specific to Fri-Mon. Oh well, I don't need anything, that's for sure.

  3. Student ID gets you 15%. The annual percentage rates on these are about 19.99-24.99% on a good day.

So...if you think you're buying to justify the 20% off, think twice because carrying a balance means you've just paid full price (or a premium) for that item. The rewards card is so minimal...spend $500, and get a free favorite fit tank. Do you really need to go through all that hassle for one tank top???

    Don't get sucked in!

  4. Christy, way to break it down! So true. I had a card for about a year and closed it. Never looked back. I painstakingly paid it off each time I made purchases, but ended up getting caught up in a buy-return cycle. I'd guess that no JC card & the 30 day return policy cut my purchases about 75%. Sometimes I think about reopening it because I *am* shopping there and the rewards add up. It's just not worth it to me. I keep a watch on my cc limits & how they affect my score. They kept bumping up my limit & I didn't like that. I have BR's luxe card, which is worth it for the anytime free shipping, no minimum. My Macy's card I've had the longest, so I keep that for cc history.

  5. I don't think the 20% off is that attractive, needless to say it's for ur first purchase only. however normally u only get 10% off with opening a jcrew card. Especially bc it's memorial day weekend, they shouldn't limit the promotions to new cardholder. I also think the rewards is pretty minimal too. I mean, u only get $25 for every $500 spent, and the gc issued expires one month after.... Many restrictions indeed! I'm contemplating to use my visa instead.

  6. I'm already a cardholder and was VERY disappointed to see this as well. Guess I'll be visiting other online stores over the holiday.

  7. There's still time for them to come up with a Memorial Day promo that applies to everyone, and I hope they do.

As for me personally, I'm not a cardholder and I'm considering this offer because my husband likes a pair of shoes that will probably never go on sale, and 20% off is probably the best deal we'll ever see. We have a few days to mull it over. I really don't want to have another credit card, but we'll read the fine print and see if it's worth it.

  8. I seem to remember J Crew doing a shoddy promo over another holiday weekend as well... so was not totally surprised to see this. Maybe they figure people are too distracted with all the different sales going on and that it will be more lucrative to have a good promo AFTER the holiday craziness. Who knows but no CC for me!

  10. Well, I did receive an e-mail for free shipping on my next purchase. So I won't scream too much about this odd decision.
