Did you ever have a J.Crew item that you were completely obsessed with, especially since you never got your hands on it? You know, the one where you save all its related online images, the one where you earmark the catalog pages showcasing the item, and the one you search on eBay and the Great Weekly Exchange {Looking to Sell} posts? These are "the ones" that we let get away, and can never forget. ;)
There are a variety of reasons we let these items slip by. Maybe it sold out too early, or we played the sale-waiting-game too long and lost. In any case, we still dream about owning these must-have items.
For me, there are actually several "the ones". In fact, I have a top ten "the one" list. But easily, the top item on my list is the Versailles Shift Dress (Item 82879; $265.00). There are so many reasons why I am obsessed with this dress— from its delightful illustration of the Palace of Versailles to its fitted lady-like bodice to the clever decorative tie closure at the back. {sigh} I love this dress... I totally regret not getting this dress.
What is your "the one" item that you love but missed out on from J.Crew? Do you still hope to own "the one" one day? :)
What a fun topic! Think I'm over the hunt now since I went through that about a year ago ... finally found my Giverny skirt after checking all the usual places regularly for 15 months! But I had also hunted for the metallic Giraffe day coat, the French serge day coat and the Serengeti dress and shoes like an obsessed mad woman. This might make some of you a little crazy but I was not hunting for and just happened to see the Campo di Fiori dress about a year ago and said to self ... why not add it to my cart to see what the fuss is all about ...
ReplyDeleteHow fun, Alexis! Mine isn't a piece of clothing -- it's actually one of J.Crew's jewelry pieces! I was OBSESSED with this bracelet that they had around 2007-08. It was a rope bracelet with three bedazzled angelfish on it. I tried it on in the store, but with my then college student budget, it was way out of my price range. I'm STILL so bummed that I never got the chance to own it!
ReplyDeleteI have the scarf- the Versailles one. LOVE. I wish I were small enough to turn it into a dress...
ReplyDeleteMine is every single piece of the pink & green sailboat print that was out during the spring and summer of 2005. I'm particularly bummed that I missed out on the printed cardigan, but there was also a strapless dress, a skirt, a bag, and several other pieces of the same print. Sigh.
ReplyDeletePatti, what size things are you looking for? I see the pink and green sailboat items from time to time ...
ReplyDeleteFor me it is the Serengeti dress, and the linen Antonia dress in the Florentine print. I have even considered removing a rib to fit in the size 2 I see on Ebay from time to time. I managed to score the Verushka dress (my other obsession) on the JCA and it is everything I had hoped for. Also, for anyone who might be lusting after the Italian Jacquard Fiona, I found this one on Ebay with a low starting bid:
ReplyDeletehttp://cgi.ebay.com/J-CREW-ITALIAN-JACQUARD-FIONA-JACKET-COAT-0-2-XS-WHITE-/220777855700?pt=US_CSA_WC_Outerwear&hash=item336762bad4#ht_4317wt_1141
I paid full price for this and still love it, it is a beautifully made, quality piece.
(Hi everyone, I changed my username from socialscientist to life as a cat.)
ReplyDeleteHmm, I'm a relative newcomer to J. Crew so I haven't had as much time to accrue missed pieces, though there were a few from the past year or so. I often wonder if I should've gotten the Hammered Silk Skirt. Same with the purple (brown) Sequin Pencil Skirt. I already have the Stardust one from the year before (thanks, Ebay!) and got compliments on it. I mostly crave their skirts and jewelry though my jewelry fixations are also of the more recent sort - the flashy crystal styles. I've managed to collect a good number of their necklaces on Ebay and popbacks and now have a collection numbering 11(!) so I don't have too much left on my wishlist. My favorites scores include the brown Dauphine Ribbon necklace (my bf, not normally a fashion person, loved it!) and the Twisted Neon Magpie Necklace.
I guess I've mostly seized on the items I can't get out of my mind for several days at a time - just the last two days I diligently stayed up for a sale update and nabbed the Britten Platform Booties in brown. So a more appropriate category for me would probably be "Ones" that didn't work out! Among these I can count the Silk Motorcylce Jacket.
Realistically though, if I could find any Perfect Fit Long Sleeve Crewneck Tees, unworn, and in lovely colors, I'd probably snatch them up in an instant. If they had one in Breeze in recent history, I'd probably kick myself for missing it.
OT, but would it be possible for us to have a catalog scan archive on the Flickr Pool? Or would that be a copyright infringement? I noticed there have been some halting efforts in putting up JC catalog scans on the internet, and it'd be nice to have one go-to location for them, as JC doesn't archive their catalogs like say, Anthro does. I'm willing to do some uploads as soon as I get our home scanner working (at the earliest this weekend), but if someone beats me to it I will not protest! I also only have catalogs from late 2009 forward as I've only been a JC shopper since around then.
ReplyDeleteI have searched for a giverny pencil skirt in size 6 for three years now... and 8 would do, too... sigh....I dithered over ordering before I went to France and then it was too late!
ReplyDeleteI wish I would have bought many of the Cambridge cable cardis with the plain sleeves. I have two, black and a pale heather grey, and I love them! I wish I had more colors and duplicates. I have other Cambridge cable cardis with the cabled-sleeves, but the plain sleeves look so nice.
ReplyDeleteThe orange and white fish print skirt from the early 2000s.
ReplyDeletea few I did not get:
ReplyDeletethe lobster glass bead necklace.
jet beaded cashmere sweater.
the french serge day coat.
the cropped tartan trench.
the golden roses renee coat.
sub
ReplyDeleteAlexis I am with you on that Versailles print dress, I so wish I had purchased it.
ReplyDeleteAnd a wool Bella. And the Campo di Fiori!
Patti I have seen that print on ebay recently. I had the scarf and I actually lost it, so I still look for it from time to time.
Fun topic!
:( The Patent Andi bag and the Jamie bag in black...
ReplyDeleteIt's that darn kaleidoscope big button mini. A 6, an 8, a 10. I don't care. Every time I see one on ebay, I end up losing it!
ReplyDeleteYes - the green Mary Janes that haunt me in the Weekly Review graphic each week!! Also the bright pink and lemon versions as well......*sigh*
ReplyDeleteJamie Bag, anything in the Versailles and Library prints, and wool Bellas in every color!
ReplyDeleteOh Alexis, I'm with you on the Versailles dress. It's so, so lovely. (er, if anyone is looking to rid themselves of one in a 4...) I've been very lucky/dedicated-to-stalking several prints this past year, so have been able to get some of the prints I've pined for.
ReplyDeleteThe Library print dress and the Jamie bag!
ReplyDeleteI have a long list but to name just a few: the pink Lexington blazer, the campo de fiori dress, and this one dress from Holiday 2005...I have no clue what it was called but it was wool, black on the bottom, ivory on top with big ruffles around the collar (at least that's what I remember anyway!) Does anyone have any clue which dress I'm talking about?
ReplyDeleteTippy, I know exactly what you're talking about. The item number is #80013 (which I only know 'cause I was watching it on eBay a while ago) and it's from HO 06. It shows up on eBay every once in a blue moon and looks incredibly cute, but I have absolutely nowhere to wear it.
ReplyDeleteI also long for the orange and white fish print skirt. Kicking myself!!
ReplyDeleteMine is the Green Double Cloth Lady day coat from around 05' with the silk teal floral lining...Loved the pattern. There were also jewelled kitten heels, a cami and a scarf in the same print...Never seem to find my size in any of them.*sigh*
ReplyDeleteAlso the Stratton boots from that year, still can't bring myself to buy a pair of UGG's until I find those.. They pop up every year on ebay but never in my size or new condition.
Great topic, Alexis!
ReplyDeletesub
Sub! Great topic!
ReplyDeleteFun topic!! I have a white dress with red poppies on it from summer 2000 or 2001 (posted on my blog here). After having two kids in the past couple years, it's a little too tight on me and I've been hunting the size 8. So far on Ebay, all I'm finding are the really tiny sizes :-(
ReplyDeleteI wish I hadn't missed out on the Salina red patent ballet flats from 2007 (?).
I also wish I had gotten the navy blue school of fish print dress. But I was lucky enough to get the orange school of fish print skirt.
Fun topic indeed!
ReplyDeleteLouise...I own that dress, love it :) Coach had a poppy flower line of pocket books a few years ago that matched perfectly with it. I am also hunting it but in the black version now!
I weep over that Versailles dress. Buckets of tears.
ReplyDeleteOh, for my love of the elusive Library dress! And the Versailles!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun trip doen memory lane!
ReplyDeleteI am happy to say that many items I'd given up for dead have come to me via the exchange, which I am so grateful for!
I'm probably saddest that I have yet to find a Bal d'Hiver dress in my size. (There is actually one on eBay right now but for $500. Ummm...nothx.) I would probably wear it less than 5 times in my life, but the catalog photos of it sold me on a lifestyle I wanted to be part of -- and I'm convinced I could if I could just get my grubby paws on that dress! LOL.
The Veruschka dress is another one of my all-time faves (cue dramatic sighs), and the Collection platinum tweed sheath dress.
There are a gazillion other things on my wishlist, but those are the bigguns.
And to those of you who mentioned the Serengeti dress, you *must* beg, borrow or steal to get it. It's just divine. I sold off several things to buy a NWT one from eBay for $129 and I love it so. Treat yourself!
Definitely the Talitha maxi dresses, especially the orange one!
ReplyDeleteMy item is the merino ruffle neck cardigan (from 3 years ago?) in the dark peony color. I have one in black and wished I had purchased other colors - still my most favorite sweater!!
ReplyDeleteAmy Kelinda,
ReplyDeleteI have the bracelet you are looking for and wouldn't mind parting with it...... what is you email?
I played the sale game with the J.Crew Merino Coquette sweater for too long. I search it each morning on ebay. I've seen the olivine shade show up on ebay, but not the beigy pink that I'm hunting for. I swear I'll find in someday.
ReplyDeleteGreat topic...
ReplyDeleteI have so many.... mostly shoes! Liza printed peep-toes....
Giverny skirt.... some jackets.....
Nice to see though that I have several of the "lust items." My personal favorite is the Veruschka dress! That was my first full price, don't think twice about it purchase ;)
MaryMoo, it's not really funny but your post made me laugh. I feel for you! :) Alexis, please do not put the Wylders in any of your blog graphics. :) I am tormented enough already.
ReplyDeleteLIBRARY PRINT DRESS...or skirt! How could I not own one or both of these pieces as much as I love books? Sigh...
ReplyDeleteWhat I would give for the dress or cami in the vintage violet print... I own the peacoat and so badly want the others in. Size 4/6. Sadly, all the ones on eBay never seem to be my size...
ReplyDelete1) The library print dress
ReplyDelete2) Scattered locket necklace [i found one, didn't get it, returned to the store the next day and it was gone]
3) Daphne wedding dress
4) Celeste Pique wedding dress
[both wedding dresses sold out before i even got a chance to try them]
Aahh, how I still long for you Paris scene cardigan(pictured). I don't remember what year this was from but oh how I still want you. I was much too young when this was available to appriciate it's cuteness, not to mention I would have had nowhere to wear it. So se la vie it is but my white whale.
ReplyDeleteEveryone: Great reading your comments. I find it so interesting how many of us have the *same* "the one" items that we missed (e.g. Versailles, Bellas, Library print anything, Vintage violet anything, Talitha dresses, Veruschka dress, Jaime Bag, etc.). Perhaps, it is time for J.Crew to bring those coveted items back! :)
ReplyDeleteMary Moo: I hope you get those Mary Janes in green!!! :)
Tamara: Too funny! I won't torture you with an image of the Wylders. ;)
Tippy: I remember that dress too! Love it and would love to own it. I rarely see it on eBay unfortunately. :(
life as a cat: That is a great idea for us to have a catalog archive- if we could all just upload to the JCA Flickr whenever we can, with whatever catalogs we have- then we could have all of them to refer to! :)
Incidentally, I know there were a few catalogs over at Shannon's fabulous blog Wardrobe Review, (link here). But unfortunately the link no longer works. Not sure what happened. :(
I wish I would have purchased:
ReplyDeleteThe school of fish skirt (anyone have a 14 they want to part with?)
The cardigan that had the ballroom scene--at the time I did not appreciate its quirkiness, now I do (still looking for XL)
There are more but these are the items for which I continually hunt.
The vintage violet cami.
ReplyDeleteSpring '07, I think.
Well, don't hate me Alexis but I have the Versailles shift dress and I hardly ever wear it because it doesn't suit my straighter frame very well. It's designed more for someone with curves on the bottom and not someone curvy on top, like me. I you can imagine, I wear an 8 or 10 on top to fit my bust. I take a 4 in skirts and pants. So I have an extra 2-3 sizes larger skirt than I need when I buy a dress to fit my bust. I can often tailor the dresses but with tucking, pleating and print placement on the skirt it is not always practical. I did wear the Versailles shift to a Mad Men party last year and everyone loved it. It is a beautiful dress.
ReplyDeleteI seem to get obsessed over handbags long after they're sold out and then I am begging people to sell them to me on the Weekly Exchange. Thankfully there are such helpful JCAs that are willing to part with their bags. The latest wish is for the Campo, which I've just purchased thanks again to the Weekly Exchange. Can't wait for this lovely bag to arrive.
Just missed the yellow and grey taffeta rugby skirt on eBay :(
ReplyDeletesilverlining & alexis: so glad you both know what dress I'm talking about! For a moment there, I thought I had dreamt it up lol. I am going to have to keep an eye out for it on Ebay!
ReplyDeletemack, don't despair -- i've seen that skirt come up on eBay a few times in the past year. keep trying! :)
ReplyDeleteI, too, weep for the Versailles dress. xoxo, what size is yours? If you ever decide to part with it, please let me know! Thanks!
ReplyDeletepatmosjd@yahoo.com
xoxo: I don't hate you for owning the Versailles Dress, in fact I am completely jealous of you!!! You are so lucky!!! :)
ReplyDeletePatmosJD, my Versailles dress is a size 10. It would be more like an 8 in current sizing, vanity sizing having stretched the measurements out a bit more recently.
ReplyDeletexoxo: That's my size, so if you ever decide to part with it... :)
ReplyDeletePatmosJD, I will keep that in mind. :^)
ReplyDeleteSE Mom, are you talking about this cardigan?
ReplyDeleteI have the orange and white school of fish skirt NWT in size 2. I never did get around to wearing it and would love to give it a good home!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what a fair price would be..
Patti, I see that print constantly on eBay. Search by your size and you'll come across it!
ReplyDeleteI want the ischia dress... but I've been lucky enough to come across the library skirt, dress, vintage violet cami, dress, headband, and clutch, and various other items I've obsessed over. Mostly thanks to warehouse sales and the weekly exchange!
Oh, the real one that got away is the Lana dress from 2007. It is red strapless silk organza with ivory polka dots. It was around $500 and at the time I was a student and could not afford it. The only ones I ever see on eBay are too big or too small. Sadface.
Fun topic!
ReplyDeleteThe "one" that got away and my heart still aches for is not a piece of clothing but the Selima for Jcrew Alabama glasses, those cute little red frames featured in the spring 09 catalogs, I believe. I once caught them on a popback, full price and all, ordered them, but got the dreaded cancellation email! They sure did get away!!
MaryMoo or Anyone - What is the name of those green pumps on the weekly JCA graphic? I never saw them come online and watched and watched. Did they sell out before they even went on the internet site?
ReplyDeleteShar, I have the scattered lockets necklace and would be willing to part with it if you still wanted it desperately. I'm not sure what I paid for it.
ReplyDeleteI still lust for Verushka.I was so close to snagging it when it came on final sale one day, but apparently I didn't move fast enough. I still kick myself over it!
ReplyDeletePerfect patent pump in Dusty rose!!!! (http://www.polyvore.com/crew_perfect_patent_pumps_in/thing?id=2471580)
ReplyDeleteSince then, I bought couple pairs of pink pumps, but they are not like the one that got away!!! :(
Owls & Pie, I am interested in purchasing your size 2, school of fish skirt if you have not sold it yet. Please email me!
ReplyDeleteWendysharum@Netscape.net
Since I'm fairly new to J. Crew, I don't really have anything I'm just pining over. But I certainly have enjoyed googling all of your obsessions, and now I want them all too! Such lovely pieces! It makes me think now about going ahead and ordering some current pieces at full price so that they won't be "the one that got away."
ReplyDeleteI am also somewhat new to J Crew and my holy grail was pretty modest...the black version of the Buffalo Checked Boy Shirt. I was delighted to get it on a pop back last week during the 30% off. It arrived today and I love it! Now if only the Sconset Plaid shirt and skinny calf hair leopard belt would find their way to me. :)
ReplyDeleteCandece - I have the cami you are talking about, if we are indeed talking about the same cami. I purchased it and never got around to wearing it. I think the tags are still attached. I am not at home right now so I can't check the size but I believe it is a six, maybe an eight. If it is the cami in the size you are looking for I am willing to sell it to you. I mean, if I've had it this long and never worn it...:) Send me an email if you're interested! jvalnoel@sbcglobal.net
ReplyDeleteValerie
Sigh...those green mary janes, the photo kills me every time I see it. There was also an island map print skirt that I missed...although I can't complain too much because I did get the School of Fish Skirt which is still one of my favorite pieces. I really miss JCrew prints circa 2005 and 2006.
ReplyDeleteBack in 2007, J. Crew made these lovely wool map-print cardigans with France, England, and Italy on them and I always regret not getting one, especially the gray England one. I also missed the taffeta rugby skirt in black and navy from that season.
ReplyDeleteFor me it's the featherweight cotton ruffle cardigan from last May/summer:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/sweaters/cotton/PRDOVR~26603/26603.jsp
I wanted to buy it in Natural and/or Sepia in size M or S, but alas, I waited too long for it to go on sale in my size.
I snagged one in Mint Julep that popped back in that massive sale update on Sunday, but sigh... that wasn't my first choice.
Now that J.Crew seems to have quit ruffles for the foreseeable future, I find myself longing for this cardigan again. I guess I'll always have the photo...
Sara - I think those green shoes are simply called patent leather mary jane peep toes. I caught the shoes in the aftermarket so don't have the history on how they sold.
ReplyDeleteBecause I was so relentless in hunting down my items last year, I don't have as many on my list but there is one I pine for ... does anyone remember the critter sweaters and there was one with a little boat on the front of the sweater. Since a little boat has significance for me and my dad, would love to find one in XS. Missed out on it once on eBay and have been kicking myself ever since for not bidding higher ...
Shannon,
ReplyDeleteI have the Featherweight cotton ruffle cardigan in Sepia size small. I purchased it in Orlando last July and didn't wear it for the longest time, and only started to wear it last week as a second layer under my suit jacket (only once). I don't mind parting with it (after being dried clean of course) if you still want it. It's still fairly new.

life as a cat: I've previously posted some of the older J.Crew Catalogs on my blog. Just type J.Crew catalog in the search box on the right sidebar. I also have a Flickr account they have been uploaded to under *Fabulous Florida Mommy*. :)
ReplyDeleteVery random and recent but the Wildflower Tunic Top #26570. I love J Crew tunics and I think this one is so sweet. I saw it on popback months ago but this was when I was fairly new to J Crew and afraid to buy it final sale. Alas!
ReplyDeletenomoneyfun,
ReplyDeleteI saw an england cardigan on ebay the other day. Also have seen a few piazza cardigans (in navy and orange) over the past few weeks.
Owls and Pie, I would also be interested in the fish skirt (only if Wendy decides to pass, of course!). You can e-mail me if you wish!
ReplyDeletekalscdc@gmail.com
For me it is the Ischia dress... boo hoo I have been scouring ebay and 'begging' : ) on on the JCA exchange and polyvore for one!
ReplyDeleteI missed so many... the argyle vest in black and flame red, with a bow, that Vanessa wears in the Paris catalog. The Lexington and the Bella jackets in pink. The Martinette colorblock cashmere cardigan in pink and orange (the one with only one pretty button on the neck). The Tivoli kitten heels in metallic gold or he ones in the black and white print with green links. The frog necklace... and my list goes on...
ReplyDeleteI spend an absurd amount of time stalking ebay for:
ReplyDelete1. Patent Juliets, size 8, Driftwood - best shoe ever - why are they not in "back by popular demand"
2. Polka Dot Cherie Camis, size 8
3. The Rosebud Capri sandals in silver or yellow, size 8
4. Watson Chinos, size 10S, any color - random - but my go to trouser and the ones I have are wearing out!
There are MANY other things, but these are the most practical of my list.
And in general, I miss critters. Where did they go??
Any leads appreciated - pluce@directv.com

ReplyDelete@nobelle - Is this the cardigan you are talking about? Ran across it in my Ebay perusals and thought of it when I saw your comment:
ReplyDeletehttp://cgi.ebay.com/J-CREW-100-CASHMERE-SWEATER-CARDIGAN-S-SMALL-NWT-/280667809469?pt=US_CSA_WC_Sweaters&hash=item41591ae6bd#ht_500wt_1156
Fabulous Florida Mommy - Great, thanks for the pointer! Look like you got some oldies but goodies there.

ReplyDeleteHi Robin,
ReplyDeleteYes that's the one!! only that I am an XS. I have been so tempted to buy that one, but I know it will be too big for me :(
tasty moog:
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! I saw that one too but it's a small! I sized up to a medium back then in cardigans because small cardigans fit me perfectly but were stressful for the bust button. I'm tempted to bid and hopefully score it and just wear it as a open cardigan but I always like the option of wearing mine buttoned up.
I also missed out on the argyle sleeveless sweaterdress. *sigh* I miss old J. Crew.
Oh yeah, now that I think about it a bit more:
ReplyDelete- Rhapsody Chain Handle Purse in the beige color
- Coquette Hobo in Luxe Tweed
I think I love anything with chains and zippers on it.
I am currently on the hunt for a Rhodie Satchel for a reasonable price. I've seen a few on eBay but haven't been ready to spend the $200 they often go for (also why I didn't buy it in store, because I didn't have the $288). I was ready to buy one on eBay for $180 last week, but somebody snatched it before I could buy! I have a saved search, so eBay notifies me when anything matching "jcrew rhodie" comes up. :)
ReplyDeleteMy other "one that got away" was the French Serge Opera Coat, the mustard one with the jeweled collar. There is one on eBay that is a size 8 for $500 that's been up there forever, but I'm more like a size 0-2. Also, the $500...
I wanted the Merino Coquette Sweater in the twig color, and eyed one on eBay a while ago, but in the end I decided it probably wouldn't fit right (their pullover sweaters are weird on me) and that I wouldn't wear it much because it would be too warm. Ah, well.
Hopefully, this will not be "the one that got away" because I'll find it on the sell/exchange or popback lists, now that I know the terminology of the web: I missed out on the Linen Bermuda Jacket in Indigo Tile. I could use a size 14T, but I'd settle for a 14!!!
ReplyDeletesub!
I know I am very late adding to this thread but I will always regret not buying the twisted neon magpie necklace (esp. When it was on sale!) *sigh* What I wouldn't do to find one!
ReplyDeleteI comb the internets for the cobra bangle http://www.polyvore.com/women_jewelry_striped_jeweled_cobra/thing?id=3751834
ReplyDeleteAlso, the cashmere shrunken shawl cardigan. I had it in light gray, and wore it so much I rub a hole in the elbow. The neon yellow one got destroyed by a cat :( and now you can't find them anywhere. They were so perfect and so comfortable. I still think J Crew doesnt do cashmere the way they used to
ReplyDelete
