J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. i posted a review on my blog (here) of the silk henley top (in melon spice). Love it! It fits true to size (I took the same size I usually take in camis), and is on sale on the web, and in stores (although for different price points, strangely enough!) It's a winner!

    tank is TTS

  3. Hi there!
Does anyone have the lace over tank (#36954?) I am wondering how it washes and if there is any shrinkage.

Also looking for a review on the Chambray Schoolboy blazer.

    Thanks!

  4. Joanne,

I have the Chambray jacket and I really love it - you can dress it up or down. The Belmarin pants are a perfect match and very nice and I have worn them as a suit with fancy shoes to work and then separately as more of a summer jean... I am always a size 6 in the schoolboy blazer and it fit TTS. Hope this helps!

  5. I also just received the Maddie Linen pants in the Gauguin orange! They are bold! My teenage daughter was horrified, my husband thought they were hot! They will certainly take a bit of "screwing up my courage" to wea them with other bold colours - I think I will start with neutrals first... They are a beautiful colour and they fit TTS. They are slightly higher waisted than normal and there is "ample" room in the bottom (I do not have any hips or bottom to speak off - mine seems to have pushed themselves right into a tummy after two kids...) but the pants are meant to somewhat loose and I can really envision them with a little tank top, some heels and a cocktail...

  7. I shared my thoughts on some items after seeing them IRL or trying them on in this post on my blog yesterday. :)

  8. Caroline Dress item #44774

(sigh) i wanted to love this one soooo much. the faded black color is just dark grey. the quality is really nice. machine wash. simple cut. an A-line skirt with pockets. should be perfect for me, right? wrong. it was a bit big in my usual size 4. the way the pleats gathered around the waist in the back was awkward. it looked like i was wearing a fanny pack under the dress. overall, it just wound up looking like a uniform on me. maybe a smaller size would have worked better (it's not in my store yet though) and maybe another color. the faded black was definitely just too bland for my coloring. too bad it doesn't come in a pretty poppy red color. i could forgive some of its issues and reorder a size 2 if the color was just springy.

  9. I posted pics on my blog on Sunday of the Swirling Dots Dress. Odd fit, it poufs around the waist and is not flattering (though the neckline is sweet) but I love the navy polka dot silk/wool fabric so I'm keeping it.

Also tried the Derby in Jade, sent it back. Too big through the bodice in my normal size. Also didn't love the Jade on my skin tone, which is very pale, seemed to bring out the color of my veins, gross.

Has anyone reviewed the Trenchlet, the checked one?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Miss JR - I tried it in green and grey. The grey/faded black is yuck. Dress has so much potential but falls flat. And going down a size only makes the pleats even worse. Double sigh.

  12. I am super happy with the Ryden military jacket (item #36922, now on sale). The washed twill is really nice and substantial and the soft grey colour dresses it up a bit. I have been wearing it over everything (there's a picture in my blog here). I bought the size Small - the cut is fairly generous and I can wear a sweater underneath without any problems. I normally take a size 6 in dress tops so I would say this runs fairly true to size or you could size down if you want a more trim look and aren't planning to wear a sweater underneath.

Does anyone have a review of the crushed glitter wedges?? I couldn't decide whether to order 7.5 or 8, so I decided to risk the size 8s - now waiting for my dad to ship them to me. I have been finding that J. Crew heeled shoes have been running a half size small in the past year or so (I had to size up in the Coddingtons as well as the Sutton cuffed boots from last fall). Now the 7.5s are backordered until July so I hope I got the right size!!

  13. Has anyone tried the Sidewalk shorts? What is the rise like? The web site description is confusing for these--first it says they are Favorite Fit, then it says they sit at the waist (which would be Original Fit).

    ReplyDelete
  14. Not sure if this has been discussed yet, but has anyone washed the lace-stripe tissue tee at home? I have 2 of these and did not realize they were "dry clean only". Guess I didn't think to check because who gets t-shirts dry cleaned?? Anyway, very curious what would happen if I washed them on delicate. TIA!

  15. Twisted T-strap Sandle: FAIL.

Lovely looking, but the proportions/construction are off. The t-strap is much too long, and doesn't lie closely enough to the top of my foot, so when I walk the whole sandle just flops around, unsecured. It made walking very difficult, I was slapping along like I was flat-footed, trying to keep the darn things on!

    They're going back today.

  16. CrewGurl: I have hand washed my lace stripe tissue tees and they turned out just fine. Steam pressed with the iron and they look like new. Didn't have any problems with shrinkage. I was willing to take the chance since they cost only $6.99 and thankfully it worked out.

  18. Thanks Tamara!

Joanna, regarding a review on the Chambray Schoolboy Blazer.... I put it over the silk henley top in my review above..... I love it. At first I thought it might have been a little silly for me to buy another blue blazer (I have a nice navy one, and the blue gingham from last year), but I have gotten a lot of wear out of it already. Seems to go with almost everything, and is much more summery than the navy. It is roomy, but I took my regular school boy size, so that I could layer a sweater under there if I wanted!

    Two thumbs up!

  19. Britten Short Platform Booties - I surprisingly didn't like these, given how long I'd wanted them for. Even out of the box there were things I didn't care for. The gold on the buckles was too bright, the leather too uniform-looking, the straps looked like they were simply cut from another piece of leather and not finished in any way. There were fit issues too. As I was afraid, the heel was cut too low and didn't hug my own heels to help keep them in; my heel had a tendency to slightly pull out of the boot. The shoe was almost a little too big, even though I sized down from a 5.5 to a 5. (What's up with vanity sizing in shoes? Does it really console people if they wear a smaller size? Ten years ago I wore a 6.5 in Nike sneakers.) They were also just a bit heavy for me to be able to walk in comfortably given that they weren't fitted enough to stay on my feet well. And overall I didn't like the silhouette of the shoe - with the heel coming up so low, the top part of the shoe was too little to balance out the angular, 3+ inch rise of the bottom part.

  21. On a recent trip to the B&M I tried the shoreline-stripe knit dress (it's the one hidden in the weekend sectio, with spaghetti straps, elastic at the waist and it retails for $78). Tried the xs and it's tts (I wouldn't size down). It isn't clingy and much more flattering than the drawstring henley version that came out earlier in the season. Once again if the price weren't absolutely crazy I would have considered it but it is instead on my sale watchlist.

  22. I recently ordered the derby dress in jade. I usually wear a size 0 in jcrew but they were all out of 0s and 00s. So I sized up to a 2. I have an old sundress from Jcrew (c. 2008) that's a size 2 that still fits me nicely. Even though I swear Jcrew clothes have gotten bigger I decide to take a chance on the 2, figuring I could get it taken in. But I don't think I need to get it taken in!
It fits nicely on me. I am 5'5 and it wasn't too long (ends right above the knees), 125 lbs and a C. So it fits nice around the bust and flares out before it gets to my waist. My waist is my smallest part so the flare out before my waist is probably why it fits so nicely.
I am also loving the jade color - I don't own anything green! I have olive toned skin and have been using self tanner. This dress looks much nicer IRL than online.

  23. I know this is old news but I finally got to wear my Maritime dress and LOVE it! It is extremely comfortable. I posted pics of it here: http://www.trestippy.com/2011/05/maritime-time.html

I'm also wearing the cece leather and tortoise flats in this post and they are so comfortable. I love that J. Crew is using the rubber sole on flats these days!

  27. I just received the Farrah dress, which I really like on the model. Unfortunately, it does not work on me for a number of reasons. I am just over 5'5" and the dress is shorter on me than the model. The dress is nicely made, but it feels like it is cut on a bias, which I don't find comfortable. There is also a bubble hem, which is hard to see in the photo. The fabric is not too shiny-which was a concern of mine, so this could be a great day to evening dress. I tried it with a belt, and wanted it to work-but it is going back.

  28. Has anyone seen/tried/purchased either the Attache or Workday dress(es)? I want a plain white dress to use as a foil for my bright summer cardis and accessories. Thank you for your thoughts.

    ReplyDelete
  29. JulieStyle,

Thanks for the review of the dress. I have a question though. Why do you find bias cut uncomfortable? Just wondering as I thought bias cut was to make the dress or skirt flow and fit better. Thanks for any help.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I am curious about the fit of Attache dress as well, If anybody tried it on please share.

  31. I just received the Milano gladiator wedges in cognac. They're really cute and the soles appear to be well-made enough that they won't split apart. But when I ordered them I was worried about the skinny leather ankle straps. The punched holes for the buckle are so close to the edge of the strap that I think over time it'll all just tear through.

Thinking of returning them. Anyone worn them for a while and the straps are still good?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Quyen, does your pinky get tangled up in those thin straps? That's why I've been avoiding them. I love the look though.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Review and pics of the Edie purse in flame here. I love it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Tamara -

My pinky toe doesn't poke out of the straps. I have a wide foot for a size 6 & thankfully they're not spilling out! The middle strap that runs down the length of the front has stitching that keeps the ones that run across in place.

    Hope that helps!

  35. The workday dress fits very narrow in the hips, in my opinion. I had it in Super 120s in a 12 and I'm more of a 10 and the waist hit so low that it was tight. I saw a lot of them on ebay and wondered if this was why.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Received the Indigo Pea Jacket (on sale for $89) today. Absolutely love it! I had been eying this one for a long time, so glad I got it. It has a clean, flattering silhouette. And, pardon my "project runway" speak, it looks expensive. I got size 6 and I'm usually a 4 or a 6 in J Crew jackets. 6 is the right size for me. As others have mentioned, it's not roomy in the shoulder. With normal posture, it fits just right, but if you bend down, it feels a bit tight. So I wouldn't size down on this one. Also, unlike some previous reviewers, I don't find the gold buttons to look cheap and actually think they look cool. Wish I had had this jacket in March and April when I could have worn it more, but this is what happens when you wait for sales - you get less wear that season.

  37. anyone seen a fit difference in swim suits from this year and last?

i scored the free ship and 20% coupon and used it on a few suits... but found the fit off when i got them in the mail today:( i purchased the heritage solid lowrider and it was loose in my usual medium!?!?

    ReplyDelete
  38. jo, I had the same experience with the Casbah hipster. I ordered my usual size and it was large. So large that I would be afraid to wear it in the water for fear of losing it. The Casbah underwire halter top on the other hand, fit small. I sent both pieces back and don't plan to reorder. So sad because J.Crew swimsuits used to always be a sure thing for me.

I found the Lomellina bottoms to fit really large recently as well, but at least the top still fit.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Can anyone comment about the Maritime dress? Has anyone tried to wash it and noticed any shrinkage? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I agree that vanity sizing has reached swim suits. I had to size down this season from XS to XXS.

  41. Can anyone review the Nili Lotan® stripe boyfriend sweater?

  42. The Loxley Buckle Peep Toes in mink arrived tonight. They're beautiful, in perfect condition, and fit nicely, but I just don't like how they look on me. :( I feel I need a chunkier shoe to balance out my bigger body. If they had a platform, even a thin one, I'd keep them.

They're a size 6.5 and will work for someone who takes a 6.5 in the Lindy and Collins. If anyone wants them, email me at tamara dot chicago at yahoo dot com. I'm going to send them back on Thursday morning if nobody contacts me. I paid $149.99. I cannot accept returns, but if you're sure of the sizing and you know you want the shoes, you will be very pleased with them.

  43. 1MadScientist, I feel better after reading your review of the Derby dress. I found I had to size up as well. It just looked too young on me, I think. Maybe it depends on your rib cage? Who knows.
Joanne, I have that lace cami and wanted it to shrink a little but no such luck. It is pretty boxy. It definitely did not shrink in width.
WFF, I tried your link to the Kiev blouse but it did not work. I will try another way. I LOVE that blouse but decided I could not justify the high price. :(

  45. I actually had pretty good luck with the Caroline dress, but I am pretty tall. The length was good on me. I am going to try it in one size smaller as well just to compare the fit in the chest. The quality was great. I have the pink and it is very pretty.

  46. tamara, since you are such a J.Crew shoe aficionada, have you tried the Quorra high-heel oxfords? I don't usually buy J.Crew shoes but these are leather with leather lining and sole and I like the cutouts so I am considering them. Would love an opinion if you, or anyone else can share.

    TIA

    ReplyDelete
  47. I haven't tried the Quorras but I do like how they look. Love the heel, I'm a big fan of the heels that join to the sole with that little curve, if you know what I mean. The Coddingtons, Odeons, Gibsons all have that curve. The platform is nice too, barely there but enough to balance the heel (and provide comfort out on the street too, IMO). They look nice and summery. I love the mink and tawny orange colors, I have those in the Collins and they're really pretty. It's nice that they put a lighter colored heel with the tawny orange.

  48. I ordered the Jane dress, which looks so great in the catalog and online. Unfortunately it doesn't come close to its print impression in person. The fabric is oddly thick, and very ribbed, almost cheap looking. The proportions are OFF - 10 was just right in the shoulders, but the button at the waist left it too wide and boxy through the body. Has anyone else had this experience? I was deeply disappointed.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Not much use for my review since this cardi has been sold out for a while (with the exception of occasional popbacks), but I finally wore one of my Cielo cardis yesterday now that the weather is warm enough to wear such a lightweight. I had removed the ruffle. It performed very well! No fuzzing or pilling, and no wrinkling either despite having the sleeves pushed up all day. I have 3 others, I need to remove their ruffles too and then they'll go into full rotation. The Cielo isn't quite as polished as the Marzipan or Jenna, but it works well with the suiting-type skirts I always wear. I love love love these lightweight merino cardis from J Crew, I hope they continue to produce more.

  50. Peplum blouse (43124) - oh honey, no. Vivid poppy is spot on, a bright true red. Little plastic drop buttons identical to the ones on last year's Cecelia cami. It's very short (and I'm quite short-torsoed) so I assume the model must be wearing a Tall. The deal breaker was the puffed sleeves - they literally stuck out almost 2" in all directions, which combined with the too-short length, just looked ridiculous on me. Too bad, I had high hopes for this one.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Got the Cecilia dress in the Casablanca Blue the other day since I love my Cecilia in orange so much. LOVE the blue color...it is gorgeous! For this one, I sized down to a 2 since my other one is slightly loose up top. Unfortunately, the 2 was too tight in the bust. It fit fine everywhere else. It will be going back and I probably won't exchange for a 4 unless it goes on super-sale later on. I really don't need duplicates of the same dress!!

  55. I purchased the Emelline's in provence pink this morning. I had bought the aged driftwood several weeks back but the top strap was too small and I returned them. Later I regretted it, I'm famous for "modding" my clothes and a couple of times shoes too, and I realized I could have found some leather somewhere the same color as that strap to do an extension. They've been sold out in my 6.5 ever since, but this morning the provence pinks went on sale and 6.5 was available. I waffled for about 10 minutes, then bought them. I'm glad I did, the 6.5s are now gone. This might be a blessing in disguise, even though I ended up paying more, it will be easier to extend a black strap than a beige one and I think the provence pink will look better than the aged driftwood with my outfit. It's for my anniversary in June. :) For those who are considering the Emellines, especially if there's a %-off promo starting tomorrow, they fit me just like the other straight heel platform open-toed shoes like Collins, Lindy, Gibson sandal, etc. I took 6.5 in all of them and the 6.5 Emelline worked perfectly. But beware, the top strap is unusually short compared to the strap directly below it.

  57. Has anyone tried the Merkato Wedge espadrilles? I don't seem to find any reviews or comments anywhere.

  58. Genny-Sorry for the late answer. The bias cut makes the dress feel like it doesn't hang straight - it does - but I kept feeling like I had to even out the seems. I have an hourglass figure, and a bias cut can tend to cling a bit to hips, so I personally don't find it comfortable because I feel like I'm fidgeting with my clothing. Does that make sense?

  59. I just received the Edie purse in pecan and the cashmere cape cardigan in warm elm. Both are GORGEOUS! The purse is structured with soft leather, and the strap and handle are darling. The shoulder strap is on the short side, so you can't wear this purse cross body. You can remove the shoulder strap, though, and it looks so demure and very Parisienne. The cape cardigan is really soft, and it seems to be well constructed- it doesn't seem flimsy or thin. The warm elm is almost an olive color, it is not brown at all, but it is still so pretty. I got a M and it fits true to size. If you like capes/shawls/wraps, then you will love this cardigan.

  60. I am in LOVE with the Jersey Lomellina knotted cross-back top and so glad that all these great colors came back!

  69. XOXO and tamara- finally got my shoes! The quorra high heals oxfords are great . They do run a half size to small...so size up if you need to with the Coddingtons. The quorra are great quality, super soft leather, and the tawny Orange color is amazing.

Other items in the shipment include the lace over tank in smoke charcoal. Nice tank, but not much shape near the waist. I do like it though for a casual day.

Also, received the wildbloom halter top and bikini bottoms. Thanks to all the jca's because I ordered a size down on the bottoms. I usually wear a small top and med bottom, but ordered small for both. It fits great and the pattern is beautiful.

Overall, a great shipment and I am keeping it all. I hope this helps someone :)

P.s. I just got an Android...and this was the first site I visited on my first ever smart phone...this could be dangerous!

  70. I got the Jane dress today. I had high hopes for this dress, mainly because it's the first in a long time that was long enough for me.

First the pros. The length is great and if you're not as tall, it comes in petites. It is a faux wrap, the under wrap side is sewn into the seam. That's easier to deal with than a regular wrap. The sash is fastened by a few stitches in the back, easily removeable and you can wear whatever belt you like. I ordered the olive color and it is lovely.

Now the cons. The fabric is not as soft and drapey as it looks in the picture online. It has a ribbed texture and is deceptively heavy. It doesn't hang nicely. The dress feels boxy to me. I felt like I was swallowed by the dress and yet it wasn't too big size wise. My friend said it looked like a military bathrobe. Back it goes!

    ReplyDelete
  71. "Military bathrobe" hahaha!

Stene, so glad you got your shoes and you love them! Here's to more cool shoes. :)

I never was a fan of shoes that were any color other than black or brown, maybe tan, but I've gotten some really great J Crew shoes in colors, mossy oak and tawny orange Collins, cobblestone Coddingtons, warm taupe and olive Lindys ... and now it makes me want to have more colorful shoes. Not brights, but these subtle colors that function like neutrals but are more interesting. Remains to be seen how the provence pink Emellines look, hopefully not too pink. I have a provence pink Jenna's cardi but I have a feeling the Emellines aren't going to be like that at all.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Stene, thanks for your review of the Quorra heels. I like that they have a leather lining and sole and the cutouts are cute. Now to decide whether I get the orange or mink.

  73. By the way, the Jane dress is described as silk twill on the website, and the inside tag says tencel. Argh.

    ReplyDelete
  74. vintage lace tee - I got the navy. Lovely color, sort of a bright navy not blackish. (If that makes sense) The lace insets look more black. I usually wear an xs, but went with the xxs, since lately their tops have been too big. Glad I did. It's got a boxy shape.

Notched skinny belt - antique lavender color looks just like it does on my monitor. The holes are a bit wonky, not in a straight line, but weave from one side to another at one end of the belt.
I got the small-medium. It's not as versatile as I'd hoped. I can really only wear it at my waist, not on my hips.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I wore my Factory linen-cotton slub cardigan in the warm mocha color for the first time yesterday, and it was great! Temp outside was about 80 with high humidity, I had on a sleeveless tee under the cardi and I was very comfortable. I don't like 100% cotton cardis but I love linen and linen-cotton blends. I realize this one is sold out, but if you find a popback I highly recommend it. The fit is trim but not shrunken, sizing is true. I'm glad I got it in three colors early on.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I received my merino confetti stripe sweater-dress and it is stunning, definitively worth not only the sale price but probably the original price. I took my usual XS and even if it fits very well and is very flattering I think that tall ladies would find it indecently short. It is very short on me (I am 5'2") and it hits waaay above my knee. I wanted to post a pic but with Blogger being down I don"t have time now but I think that you can size up on this one to get more lenght. Also definitively needs an occasion ( it is very heavy in sequins) and is not for someone who has OCD (it seems very high maintenance).

    ReplyDelete
  77. Notched Skinny Belt - I was wrong. I can wear it at my hip. I wore it today with a pair of gray cropped chinos (last year's color) and it works great. Sorry for the mistake

  78. Hi! Has anyone tried on/bought the Rumi dress? I recently ordered the Bluebonnet dress in my usual size xs and it was huge on me. I don't live near a store and don't want to have to send it back if it's too big. Thanks! :)

  79. It seems like this is the place for the high-heel oxford Quorra discussion....

I got mine in mink and I think they are wonderful. The leather is very high quality, not stiff at all. Unlike Stene, I found they were TTS. I usually wear a 6.5 in J Crew shoes to accomodate my wide foot. However, the Quorra leather is very soft and stretches, so the 6 fit much better for me.

I like that the heel is slightly chunky. I have wide calves and don't always like the look of covered feet but bare legs on myself. The quorra is flattering for me with pants as well as skirts and summer dresses.

The heel is a bit high for me to walk normally, so if I decide not to keep them, that would be the only reason. I wish it were just a 1/2" shorter. So far I've worn them around the house and do find the shoe comfortable so far. I also suspect they will get marked down further since most sizes are still in stock for black and mink.

    Rumi Dress Review:

Tried on in store and ordered it with my 20% off cardholder discount.

Runs big. I tried on an 8 and it fit fine. (I am usually a 10 in J.Crew dresses).

If you are straight, you can go down two sizes. The neckline was low, probably not great for busty girls but I think the dress has room for boobies. The waist can be worn high (if you have a chest) or at waist if you're flatter without ill effects. The sleeves bunched up a little on me but that's probably because I have muscular arms. I wish the belt was detachable but that's my only complaint. Also, I think this dress may wrinkle easily but I don't think it would make it look bad - it is a casual dress and not meant to look freshly pressed.
