Does your dog wear J. Crew too?

The pet industry is booming. If you don't believe me, then stop at any Target or Wal-Mart. You will notice that the pet section is no longer contained in one aisle, but consumes as many as seven aisles! Besides offering the regular supplies like pet food and shampoo, there are designer carriers, sweaters, and toys all available to pet owners who love to pamper their four-legged family members! If you still don't believe me, then believe the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association who estimates that in 2008 alone, $43.4 billion (that is right, billion) will be spent on our beloved pets.

So it's no surprise that there is also a trend for consumers to buy not only better dog food, but better quality leads, leashes, and even pet clothes. J.Crew has tried to capitalize on this trend by offering Crewmutts, a line exclusively tailored towards dogs. Crewmutts was first introduced during the holiday season a couple of years ago. (Which was similar to Banana Republic and Gap, who also offered dog accessories around Christmas time). However, J.Crew has recently decided to make Crewcutts a regular staple and even offers a permanent link to the collection on their website.

Crewmutts leashes, leads, beds, and clothing have the same great patterns, fabrics, and construction that are used in J.Crew's regular (human) accessories, (which make it very appealing to loyal J.Crew customers.) Of course, the price tag for these items are just as expensive as their human counterparts. For instance, the dog rain slicker (Item 98066) pictured here costs $98!

So what do you think of the Crewmutt line? Would you buy it for your pet? Do you think it is too expensive, or totally worth it?

  1. I think it's silly and I am a total J Crew nut. But then again, I don't go for the froo froo dogs that all the Paris Hilton's are toting around. Give me a lab any day. And wouldn't they look silly in a coat???

    Love the site!

  2. Hi Lou! Thanks for the comment.

I tend to agree with you that seeing a lab in a coat would look silly! :)

  3. As a huge JCrew fan I still wouldn't buy this for my Shih Tzu. When he was the one and only baby in the house (before my daughter was born) he had his own scrapbook.....see I am JCrew crazy and I love dogs......but I wouldn't buy anything from JCrew at those prices! (even on sale I'd pass)He's a dog! If I had extra money, I'd buy myself more JCrew! It is fun to look at though.

  4. Hi JagJag2! Those prices are really too high. I agree with you too, for those prices I would by something for me than my dogs.

However, I will say that I am not oppose to *small* dogs wearing sweaters. Especially since my own two dogs have a couple of sweaters from Anthropologie (when they were on sale a couple of years ago).

  5. Yes, I agree. Sweaters or little coats are cute on dogs. My Shih Tzu had a parka in MN. Those winters are nasty!

  6. I believe the winters in MN are tough. I am sure your Shih Tzu didn't mind wearing a coat outside then!!! :)

  14. You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be really something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and very broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!money-business.org |

  17. Hopefully you know what you are buying, but even if you do what if there is something wrong with the supplies when they show up? What if the food isn't quite right or perhaps the bag is open and seems stale or the toy is open when it arrives at your home. reflective dog gear
