Love it or Leave it: the Whisper Lamé Tiered Skirt

Whisper lamé tiered skirt

Regular: $175.00
Now $99.99

When I first saw this skirt online, I thought "huh?" I wasn't sure what to make of it. It seemed a bit too "flashy" for the regular J.Crew line. (In fact, I couldn't understand how J.Crew's marketing team decided on the word "whisper" to describe the item's title. It is more like "loud" to me.) When I saw this skirt in-person at a store, I thought, "definitely overpriced for the material!"

J.Crew online states that the skirt is "a very special limited edition, silvery and pixie-like, in Italian cotton with a metallic sheen. It took weeks to get the tiers just right—each one is different by design, giving the skirt that extra edge." Uh, two weeks devoted to its tiers but no one during that time bothered to line the skirt (currently it is "unlined")? (For that price, it should be at the very least lined with some special, limited edition fabric as well.)

I am thinking that this skirt is meant to be targeted towards the younger demographics of J.Crew (e.g. late teens with lots of disposable income), because I definitely don't feel like it is targeted to me. :) I am just saying, for that price I would much rather get one of J.Crew's jackets, like the Refined canvas Fiona jacket, on sale.

What do you think of the Whisper Lame Tiered Skirt? Do you love it or would you leave it? Do you own it? Let us know what you think! :)

  1. Personally, I think only shoes, bags, and jewelry should shimmer. And being a child of the 80's this looks too much like the stuff I wore in third grade. That being the case, since the 80's are back and being redefined, it makes sense that this might be considered for J.Crew's line (think the updated tight-ankle jeans- the matchstick) but who thought it would make the cut. Its ugly.
Alexis- let me also take this opportunity (since I can't figure out how to email you through this site, if there is a way) to suggest some sort of forum on this website for J.Crew clothes trading. I have tons of stuff I no longer wear, but is great. And I don't want to take it to Goodwill or try to sell it on ebay where the market is so large. It would be great if there was a forum where I could say "hey, I'm looking for those great matchstick jeans from last fall- the ones with the gray wash and gold snap. Size 31." And someone else could say, oh, I have those and I don't wear them anymore...you get the idea. A way for people who love J.Crew to find the clothes that haunt them that they never got, or offer up items from past collections. Sort of a J.Crew version of freecycle (a great yahoo group) where participants could work out payment on their own, or just trade.
Thanks for letting me vent! (BTW, I'm serious about those jeans :)

  2. I personally do not own, nor do I have a desire to own the whisper skirt...... Not my cup of tea-- and I would not pay $150 or $99 for it.... It looks cute on the model-- but it does not fit with my lifestyle.... Alexis, I laughed on the whisper/loud comment! I totally agree. LEAVE IT! :)

  3. Is anyone else getting a "403-Forbidden" code when they try to access J. Crew's site? For some reason, it seems to have gone down for me this morning. :(

  4. I don't like it all, and I completely agree it's targeted toward a younger demographic.

I'm new to your site and love it! I also love Emily's idea about trading J. Crew.

  5. I think that's an awesome idea about the JCrew swap! I'm sure we all have gently used items that we'd be open to trading or selling to a smaller community.

I agree - I definitely have stuff, but would be hesitant to deal with Ebay.

    Great idea!

  6. When I first saw the Whisper skirt, I thought it looked gorgeous on the model (of course!) but realized that it would look pretty ridiculous on me. Or on most people for that matter... but I'm sure there are those select few who could pull it off effortlessly.

Did anyone else notice that some of the prices of the final sale items went up since the first day of the final sale, or went back to being full price? I had a Favorite Fit shirt in my cart for $9.99, but this morning found that it'd been moved back to the 'Regular' section. And the Favorite Fits that are still in the Final Sale are now $14.99 instead of the $9.99 they were on the first day! What's with that? Also, the Sarah cami is now $24.99 instead of the $12.99 it was just 2 days ago. I remember these prices because I was seriously contemplating purchasing them...

  7. First of all my butt would look HUGE in a skirt with that many tiers. Second, talk about whisper lame? I can't think of any social situation that I would be able to wear it to without getting WHISPERED about!!!! LOL.

    Emily: super idea!!

  8. Sorry, no on the skirt.

Ok, on a different topic: how do we feel about the Masako eyelet dress? I've been stalking it for a while, but there are several caveats: (1) although I love eyelet, I'm not sure about eyelet all over; (2) I don't want to look like I'm 12; (3) I'm one of the JCrew-ers abroad, plus this is final sale; (4) I'm not usually a fan of above-the-knee skirt lengths. Anyone has seen or owns the dress and wants to give me a review?

  9. And, I was just thinking about the Top Three J. Crew things that I have missed out on, and am therefore obsessed will filling the void with current instantaneous purchases. (Plus, I rarely truly 'love' something-- so when I do, I buy it!)

It began with this cherry blossom-print skirt from at least 10+ years ago: it was knee-length, full, I thnk with a ribbon-tie at the waist, and green-ish in overall color. I was just a teenager so the sale price-- $50-- was impossible. In my university years, there were two more: a really lovely smooth leather tote (around 2002?) and the pineapple-print bikini (probably 2003). Ahhh. I get a little sad thinking about them-- but this is in support that a J. Crew exchange board is a fabulous idea.

  10. Looks like something from JCrew's new Madewell Brand... prob. just a crossover with a more pricy tag. I love the Madewell website PS. It's neat!

  11. Just got this email (for cardholders) about new arrivals! Check them out!

  12. I just got an email that says...

NEW ARRIVALS! They are here because you are a cardholder we're telling you first. See the new summer colection him, her, kids online and instore.

And then.. final sale is getting better. New additions.

GOSH! Thank JCREW for telling me this as a cardholder! Now give me free shipping! right now!

  13. Its FALL stuff already.. gosh.. 2 hot to shop for that mess.

  14. Oh gosh, I'm in love with the new
Solid Kayla blouse!! I see the Kate dress is in new arrivals with a price of $98. Hasn't this been out all summer, recently marked down to $20?

  15. I'm not a fan of JCrew's whole Whisper lamé line. I saw the Whisper lamé tank and top online and thought they were ok, but in person it did not look good to me at all. Something about the material that just didn't look right.

Oh and I'm all for the JCrew trade/swap idea. I have some JCrew items that still have tags on them just hanging there forever in my closet.

Audrey, I saw the Masako dress in person and I thought the eyelet all over wasn't too much at all. The only thing that concerns me about the dress is the fit. It looks like a similar fit as the Josie dress and I did not do well with that dress. I think it's a great buy though at $90! I agree that too bad it's a final sale though.

Oh and can't wait to check out the new stuff!!

  16. fabulousfloridamommy: the tee's i was talking about are online now...they're the french market t's...i love them!

  17. It definitely is "lame"! hahaha. I crack myself up :o)

The skirt is just more proof on why 80s fashion should not be brought back. It was never fashionable to begin with.

  18. The idea of a silver skirt appeals to me, but not lamé and certainly not ruffles. I just can't get behind tiered ruffle skirts, reminds me too much of my elementary school days! I don't wear anything now that I wore when I was 5--execept color tights [not leggings!], I never stopped wearing those! haha. :)

A cute pencil skirt with some silver lurex thread in the tweed is more my speed, as would be a grey sateen. I think that's the most subtle way to do a metallic skirt. I looove the metallic leather loafers, too.

  19. Audrey, I ordered the Masako dress and, ironically enough, the first word out of my brother's mouth was "You look like you're 12!" Granted, I take my brother's fashion advice with a grain of salt, but I still returned the dress. I'm a pear-shape and it looked so so wrong for me. It made me look shapeless and also somewhat weird, with my small head stuck on top of a weird boxy-looking dress. I think it could work if your proportions were, well, more in proportion. :) The eyelet is beautiful and the sleeve detail was cute though. I was somewhat sad it didn't work out more.

  20. sue.bee, hehehehe and I second on that comment!

Heather, I also like the idea of a silver skirt, but why ruffles with lame JCrew?

    ReplyDelete
  21. OK, at first glance I am no more impressed with the July offerings than I was when I looked through the catalog a few days ago. Granted, I will MOST CERTAINLY find something that I just CAN'T live without...always do...but overall nothing that was too terribly exciting. Please, anyone feel free to point out an item I may be missing the boat on by not thinking it to have enough "wow" factor. I am ALWAYS open for (and apprecitate) suggestions!! :)

  22. I like the cut of the Domino jacquard cropped jacket, but the print is just ok. The Rustic french terry pullover is something I can see wearing this fall. Other then that, I agree jcrewjunkie nothing is shouting out wow.

  23. Just checked out the new stuff.. I freakin' love the penelope peep toes (golden moss) and maryjanes (metallic gold/blue)! And I hope they still have those golden yellow cords in the fall... must refrain from buying cords in june...

  24. In my opinion, the quality of J Crew fabric has decreased dramatically in recent years. Now, obviously style and fashion has changed since I first opened a J Crew catelog nearly 15 years ago, but I remember getting my first blouse in the mail and thinking, "Wow, this is really nice, I could wear it for years!" These days, the fabric is SO ridiculously THIN, it's hard to justify spending the money on a tank/shirt/blouse that I'm just going to have to wear a cami under. Why do they have to make everything so thin it's see-thru?

  25. Having experienced the 80's in my teens, this skirt reminds me too much of Flash Dance and leg warmers. Yuck! It's a definite Leave it for me!

However, I'm hoping that some of you can help me. I am seriously thinking of buying the Tafetta Rugby Skirt. Here's the link:

    http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/product.jhtml;jsessionid=4H3FA4NRUXT4KCTFEENRYUQKMUQQWGUG?id=prod90962181&catId=cat301216

Like some of you, I had purchased the Dark chambray skirt and it did not look good on me. Does anyone own this skirt or even tried it on at the store? How does it look? Do I need to go up a size to get the look I want? Please help! Thank you. :)

  26. I definitely say no on this skirt...I do like the Whisper Lame' Zoey Tank in Silver, though I wouldn't pay $88...maybe when it gets marked down to $19.99. It looked pretty in the store, and I could see wearing it with white pants this Summer.

ccbmum: the T's aren't on there this afternoon...I will look in the morning when they add the new stuff for the day. :)

I'm in for the Swap, too! :)

Audrey: I agree that the allover eyelet may be just too much, but the dress really is pretty. :) It would be better if it were just the skirt, or just the top...like the St.Emilion Eyelet Blouse #89545 ...I tried for it last final sale when it was $19.99, but was never successful. I think J.Crew is also offering an eyelet skirt on the sale now, but it may be a mini...not sure on that one. It's not on there now...maybe in the morning when the new stuff comes up for the day. :)

heather: I like the Penelope Peep Toes and Mary Janes, too! I also like the Metallic-Leather Bow Belt...tried it on in the store the other day, and it is really cute in person...just not for $50.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I definately agree with the cloth swap idea. It would also be a great way to exchange things that you buy on final sale that you are disatisfied with.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Whisper LAME...leave it. I had this skirt in blue with a matching top in high school...20 years ago! I was a stick and it looked great but I would feel like a little kid in it. I hear people comment how they wish JCrew made some of the crewcuts styles for adults...maybe they are listening.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Lynn: the Kate Dress is back up to full price but I guess that's because of the new colors.

    ReplyDelete
  30. More importantly - do you really want your butt or thighs to be 'whispering' as you walk? I'm thinking no.

Also, I just checked out all of the new arrivals - thankfully, there is nothing I need! Unless something really fabulous and super cheap comes up in the sale section, I am holding out on buying anything until fall. I think the fall clothes are usually the most beautiful, and the most well-made.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Also, emily - your idea is fantastic! I am still sad about the grey wool shift dress from fall 07 that was on my waitlist for six months before they canceled it :(

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hi Emily! I think the idea to create a forum for J.Crew Aficionada's to swap/buy clothes is a great idea.

There was another idea from a member that is very similar to yours. Essentially having a forum where people ask if others have seen certain items in their store and where that store is. The concpet of having a forum to find clothes is essentially the same- whether the item is found in a store or in someone's closet! :)

An issue is that it would most likely be a separate site. I can look around again for a good free forum site, but it would be a different URL from this blog (Blogger doesn't incorporate forums for visitors to create topics & list).

It is definitely an idea worth looking into! :)

Nicole R: Happy to hear I am not the only one, not "loving it"! :)

Mrs. STL Sarah: Thanks for the nice comment and welcome aboard! :)

Amy: I didn't realize that the prices even within the same final sale had changed. Ugh! That is awful!

Audrey: You are a true J.Crew Aficionada if you can remember their offerings from over ten years ago!! ;)

Lynn & Leigh: Would you believe I got an email later today about the new arrivals, and I am not a cardholder. I swear, card holders should get free shipping or some other really super benefit for being cardholders. Not emails that are sent a few hours earlier than everyone else.

Anonymoust at 11:27 AM: I totally agree. Too early to be thinking about Fall yet. :)

Sue.Bee: I made the same joke about "lame" in my head earlier! I didn't know if I was the only one who thought that too! ;)

Heather: I am with you in that silver (or any metallic) can be pretty in the right delivery of item. I like metallic ballet flats a lot. But this skirt, not so much.

Melanie: Those dresses bum me out. They are so beautiful (with fantastic fabric) but I know I can't personally pull it off. You are right in that they look great on people with very porportioned bodies.

Anonymous at 1PM: Love the Tafetta Rugby Skirt. That is "a buy" or "thumbs up" for me!

Jennifer: Your comment about whispering as you walk made me laugh out loud! ;)

  33. I would have to say leave it to the skirt... I agree it definitely is marketed to a much younger demographic they are you usually aiming at. I do love Emily's idea of trading, I have piles of stuff in perfect condition I just don't wear. There are also things that I've been pining for... like the cashmere lobster sweater from 3 or 4 years ago (in a medium or large). I actually considered the new lobster cardigan that premiered today but it just isn't as cute :(

  34. I'm not a huge fan of the tiered skirt look. I kind of understand why J Crew was creating this Whisper Lame for the - light and metallic color for the summer. Something to wear at night for parties or social dinner.

I just saw one of the most lovely wedding dress J Crew has created: the Eyelet Cascade gown. It reminds me of Napoleon empire and 1930's Art Deco dress. Oh if I were to marry all over again, this would be the dress!

  35. Regarding lack of lining, I'm noticing this with lots of different stores. Back in the day, women were expected to have an entire wardrobe of undergarments. I remember growing up with a closet of crenolines and half-slips of different lengths and flares to fit all of my school dresses. But these things became unnecessary when manufacturers began (or increased?) lining dressy stuff.

Now the trend seems to be reversing, and the undergarment industry isn't catching up. Case in point: when was the last time you went shopping for a slip? Successfully? (Lingerie does not count -- I'm talking slips with a function.) I have had to return -- or decline to buy -- many items of clothing from different stores because they were unlined, see-through, and I couldn't find the proper slips to wear under them.

Today I'm sitting here in J. Crew Super 120s wool pants. First time wearing them, and I am sorry I put them on this morning. The website describes them as four-season wool. Also unlined. I didn't make the connection when I ordered. Sure, they drape well enough without the lining (most clothes won't). But! Wool = ITCHY. And it's not exactly four-season if you have to wear tights underneath.

    Sigh. *Scratches leg*

Topic...I don't think I'll be buying this Whisper skirt. It's ugly.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Webbysuzy: I do that too- Look at wedding dresses (even though I am already married)! :)

Chini: I know what you mean! I have lots of dresses/skirts (in white too!) that aren't lined, and I am having a really hard time finding an appropriate slip to wear underneath them.

Also, sorry to hear that the 120's wool pants aren't lined. That is weird that JCrew didn't have them lined for the exact reason you mentioned: its wool against your skin!
