Does the guy in your life wear J.Crew too?

My husband didn't particularly have many items from J.Crew (nor did he care to, to be honest) before he met me. He is a JoS. A. Banks (work)/ the Gap (leisure) kind of guy. Moreover, he is a picky clothes wearer- he only likes to wear fabrics that he feels comfortable in. (While I, on the other hand, will gladly wear an itchy wool sweater in the Summer if it makes me look good.)

However, after meeting me he has several pieces from J.Crew. In particular, he really likes the quality of the "washed favorite shirts" for leisure wear because it offers him more comfort (e.g. softness) than a regular shirt, but still the classic look of a shirt. He "dresses up" the washed favorite shirts with khakis or dresses them down with jeans. He also likes the classic polos (but practically all men in the U.S. like polos!)

The only complaint I have with J.Crew men's clothing & accessories is that I notice their shoes tend to run large. I bought a pair that were "final sale" and they were way larger than the size they indicated. {The men also get the better deals in the sale section... This makes me a little jealous of course!}

I also find that when I go out shopping at J.Crew I tend to browse the men's section: Not only to see what I can buy for my husband, but to see what I can get for myself as well. (There are lots of accessories that are intended for men that I like for me: like the belts and messenger bags.)

What do you think of the men's line at J.Crew? What are some of your favorite men's pieces? Any advice for those selecting men's clothes in terms of fit/style?

  1. My husband wears JCrew too b/c of me. He has cargo pants and cotton and cotton/cashmere sweaters. The pants I can get on sale for about $20 and the gorgeous sweaters were a steal at $10 each. The items wear well and the sizing for him is consistent--Large tops and 34 x 32 pants. He doesn't own any of their dress clothes. (He prefers LLBean dress wool pants and their dress shirts. Their return policy is the best in the business and they replaced---absolutely free a pair of men's dress wool pants that had a hole worn in them after 6 months wear absolutely free paying return shipping as well.)

  2. Hi Jagjag2! Glad to see I am not the only one dressing up my husband in J.Crew. :)

Seriously, those purchases of pants for $20 and sweaters for $10 are fantastic! You rarely see those prices (especially for sweaters) in the women's section!

Also, I didn't know about the return policy. That is great!

  3. My husband also wears JCrew now. He has some sweaters & pants & socks (they have the best mens socks). He's looking for some thinner dress shirts that aren't crinkly. Any suggestions? BTW, I love the new pricey linen they have for men!

  4. Marisa, I bought my husband some of their argyle socks too. He likes them and wears them but I think he prefers plain black or blue but he needs to mix it up a bit now and then and he does wear them. Try LLBean or Lands End for the dress shirts. Land's End will even send you free fabric swatches.

  5. Hey Marisa & jagjag2: how are the socks in terms of quality and durability? I find that my husband sock's get holes in them relatively quickly despite being Perry Ellis.

Marisa: Unfortunately, I am not too sure about which J.Crew shirts are thinner. Hopefully someone else does and can share their knowledge. :)

  6. my boyfriend thinks jcrew is a little too preppy for him. He's incredibly picky, but I have gotten him into a few things: long sleeve thermal (navy), short sleeve pique polos (navy, light blue, navy/blue stripe), wool crewneck sweater (the chocolate brown is great!), and a navy/green stripe tie (I have a similar headband from elsewhere, but they are a perfect match). He doesn't go for any of the bright colors, but he did say he liked the regal purple cashmere sweater they had last winter... so maybe I can get him something other than blue and brown in the future!

I usually get him a medium. He's 5'9", average weight. He never likes any of their shorts or pants, so I haven't had a chance to get any.

  8. I think the quality of the mens socks is better than the women's socks. The women's wellie/knee high socks tend to be too thin for me and the men's weight is medium--just right.

  9. I buy jcrew clothing for my boyfriend. He wears an xs, which most other stores do not carry. Jcrew rarely stocks this size, but whenever they do (and especially if I see it on sale), I pick it up for him.

I especially like their linen camp shirts. (He's a teacher, so he needs to be able to roll up his sleeves) and merino-wool sweaters.

  10. I am a guy and shop Jcrew alot. It's bascally all I wear for work/leasure. I have had some disappointments but it is the only store that I can find quality things that look/feel nice. I have had a problem with shoes. I have a few pairs of Mocs and the McAlister boots. Yes.. the mocs fit very loose while the boots fit just right. The mocs also stretch as do Jcrew loafers. I also like the favorite shirt and all the colors. But.. sometimes there is a size change between the 2-ply cotton shirt, oxford, and secret wash shirt. A small fits differently in all styles. I find myself wearing xs-m in various sytles. I have 5'11 about 160lbs and I don't really get why there is a variation. Summer clothes at Jcrew = boring. But for cold weather wear they have a good selection. I also like the t-shirts but I have a hard time paying 29.99 for a crew neck shirt.

  11. Brooks Brothers Slim fit Oxford shirts are a good sub to get the same fit as Jcrew oxford shirts but are more business sutable. You can also dress some of the oxfords down and not look so wrinkled.

  12. ... oh and Brooks Brothers oxfords look great with the jcrew essiential pants and any of there belts.

  13. Ah, sometimes I wish I had a magical shrinking machine that would make all the men's clothes fit me ;)

I love men's fashion, and J.Crew's men's line is no exception. I also find myself browsing the men's section at stores to look for little things for myself (under the pretense of looking for something for my brother, of course). Right now, I'm loving their knit ties. So cute!

  14. FYI- J. Crew is opening a men's only store in New York this summer. I believe that they are teaming up with Jack Spade to create the space. Here's the link for an article. Can't wait!!

  15. Heather: My husband doesn't go for bright colors either. It is always the basics of white, navy, black. :)

Auryane: I find XS for men all the time in my J.Crew stores in the sale section. Maybe they are shipping all of the items in those sizes to CT. :)

Anonymous at 1:36 PM: Thanks for the detailed experience with J.Crew clothes & accessories. Especially about the mocs/shoes. It is weird how it can vary in size different shoes.

Daniel: Brooks Brothers is an excellent store. They have great ties as well.

    Amy: Totally agree! :)

Anonymous at 2:50PM: I didn't know that! I know Banana Republic had Men only stores, but I guess J.Crew will now too! I am all for another J.Crew in NY, too bad it doesn't include womens clothes. ;)

  16. thanks jagjag2, i'll check out LLbean for those shirts! I agree with you too about the socks. My socks wear through and my husband's last for a couple years atleast.

  18. Their accessories are nice sometimes, especially when they pay attention to the details like with this belt. I like these socks; seem to be durable too. Their dress shirts are awful; they always look like I slept in them, and who wear a white collar shirt? The Lands End Tailored Fit No-Iron Shirt are awesome! The washed favorite shirts are nice and durable (got an 8-9 year old one). The fit of this boot cut chino is good. The classic-fit suit pants are nice, but the material quality is poor - they wear out too quickly, a couple months walking to work and they're dead. Their jeans fit too tight in the crotch; I don’t like to have all my business on display.

  19. I'm a guy and I love J. Crew too. I need tall sizes (available only online), so the shipping costs and "final sale" return policy sometimes frustrate me. I really appreciate the coupon codes!

  20. Hi Abijah: Thanks for the run down in clothes items that are good and those that are not. I will definintely steer clear of the dress shirts!

Andrew: Welcome aboard! Totally understand about being upset with the shipping cost situation. Hopefully JCrew will address this!

  21. I have bought my husband a few items from j.crew since I have started my obsession. At first he dissed my love for the prep, but now he has embraced it. He especially likes it when I surprise him with items. I was so impressed when he saved a magazine page from GQ I think about the new j.crew store in SOHO. If we ever get to NYC we are totally going there.

  22. Yogicheck: I think it is great that your husband now likes J.Crew. Even saving a magazine article about J.Crew- I think that is wonderful! :)

  23. Hey Alexis, My husband grew up in the US so he didn't understand my new found interest in jcrew. In Toronto it is rare to see, so I love being put together and preppy. I have bought him a few shorts and polos for golfing which he loves. He even agreed to wait for a cashmere-cotton crew neck sweater that I ordered in may that is waitlisted until October. Love this forum btw.

  24. Yogichicki: I didn't realize Toronto didn't have many J.Crew stores. However, I totally understand your interest in J.Crew! :)

I think it is great that your husband agrees to wait for an item from J.Crew! (Most guys probably wouldn't even bother.) You got yourself a keeper! :O)

Also thanks for the nice comment!

  25. Alexis: Canada has no j.crew stores at the moment. The closest store to us is in Buffalo NY which is a 2 hour drive, plus there is the whole border crossing situation. I love that they ship to Canada and with the sales and free shipping it is better than shopping at stores up here. I also love when I get a call from reception that a package has arrived!

  26. Yogichicki- Wow! 2 hours plus dealing with the border patrol is a lot just to get to a j.Crew! Even though I love J.Crew, I don't know if I would go through all that trouble, myself. ;)

I totally understand how online shopping is preferred. I also love receiving a package in the mail. There is something about it, that is really wonderful. :)

  27. My husband is a dentist so he is in scrubs all day. He likes to wear comfortable clothing when he gets home (since we usually have a ballgame, or something along those lines with our boys) but for casual social occasions or for dental meetings, etc. he always lets me pick something out for him from the SALE pages at J Crew. LOL. For Christmas I got my boys the small blue duffle monogramed with their initials and they carry them to sleepovers, ballgames, school, etc. As soon as my oldest son is "of size" I will be putting him in J Crew as well (my younger son is still able to wear Crewcuts thank goodness!!)

  28. The new jcrew mens store will be very excite dmy BF would love it. Thanks for posting that article!

My BF does love jcrew. when we started dating 5.5 years ago he only wore old navy and gap (ewwww). Now he is in Jcrew, Brooks, and Banana. He loves Jcrew. But cant wear their pants. Like me he has skiiers thighs and has trouble in j crew pants. He doesnt like the baggy fit because he likes to look polished. He is a lawyer so he wear brooks/banana/ armani suits or on a casual day he will wear a shirt and khakis.

I wish Jcrew would do the coton cashmere blend for women that they do for men. I just end up being so jealous of his sweaters!

I do always check the j crew mens section. And yes I am jealous of their sales... but mostly i just want the cotton cashmere sweater!
