J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I really like that Chanel-esq jacket. It looks great on you and it's a cute little piece. I don't need it, but if I was in the market for something like that, I'd definitely pick it up.

    1. Thanks! It is super cute and very comfortable. I have something similar from a few years back so I will probably pass on it but was heartened to see something that fit well and looked nice!

  2. There are a few things I've been liking but I'm still resistant to buying them, even with the 30% off:

Georgie Suede Tassel Loafers (E0397) - These are SO comfortable!!! I tried on the gray ("Kraft Brown") and loved how clear the wingtip detailing and tassels were. Runs true to your J. Crew size and is a little narrow in the front.

Sloan D'Orsay Flats - Very flattering cut; they looked good on me and every other woman trying them in the store. For me, they weren't comfortable enough to justify a purchase at this price point, but I really liked the Gold and the Studded ones. Runs TTS.

Silk Drapey V-Neck Blouse (E2750) - I bought this for $118 but now I'm seeing it on the website for $98! How funny. Too bad it's not eligible for the 30% off promo (I'm not sure if it is in-store?). The brunswick blue color is gorgeous and there is good drape. Runs large so you have to order a full size down.

  3. I haven't really been keeping up with JCrew but the email this morning about the Jackie cardigan in wool has me worried that they are replacing the Tippi cardigan. I searched on the website and saw NO Tippi cardigans!!! These are a real workhorse for me and I will be really disappointed if they are discontinued.

    1. Ooh me too! I HATE the gold buttons on the new Jackie. I don't ever wear yellow gold and getting the buttons replaced would be a pain in the a.

  4. I'd love to post some reviews but it will probably be another two weeks before my most recent order even clears the distribution center.

  5. I haven't been doing a lot of shopping at Crew lately but thew few things I've purchased lately were big loves for me -

Preston pant in Italian Stretch wool in navy c9293 - I was very excited to see a new full length trouser in the last rollout - I tried these and the Campbell wool trousers and loved both. I decided to keep the Preston trousers - they have a higher waist but not as severe as the Hutton trousers and they are LONG at the regular length even with heels. I have 3.5" heels on today and they hit the tops of my shoes perfectly (I'm 5'8" with a 32" inseam.) They are a wider trouser leg but I'm finding them a nice change to the straight ankle length style. I did take the larger of my two pants size but only because of my larger hips - I have a good inch of room in the waist so you can probably take your regular suiting pant size with these. They are not lined which is unfortunate but I am hoping they will come out with heavier wool versions of these for winter - they are definitely going to be in my regular rotation.

Elsie Glossy Leather D'Orsay Pumps c4692 in fresco grey. I recently snagged these on pop back. My boss has these shoes and I drool over them every time she wears them. I'm a big fan of the Elsie silhouette, and even at a 3.5" heel, find these very easy to walk in. The grey is a cement grey and a nice alternative to black. I like that the toe part of the d'orsay covers my toes completely and goes further down on the foot than some of the other flat style d'orsay's which make my feet look wider than they are. These are slimming on the feet and my feet don't feel squashed in them either. I took my normal J.Crew size, the reviews said to size down 1/2 size but that wouldn't have worked for me. The full price on these is definitely steep but I picked them up for about 1/2 off which worked for me. They are perfect with the Preston trousers and I also look forward to wearing them with trouser jeans as well.

Looking forward to the rollout next week but as I look at how many items I didn't even touch this summer, I'm hoping to be more prudent about my fall purchases!

  8. Not a review of a specific item but I went to the store this weekend and found out my student discount does not work anymore for sale items. She stated this was a company-wide policy and changed in the past month. Anyone else have this issue? I find it a bit ridiculous... I was able to get some good deals through the sales with my student discount, but unless there's only a couple of (very large) sizes left, the sale is not that good of a deal for the recent quality of the items. I'm pretty disappointed in this supposed recent change. I also am not a fan of how they track your purchases with your email. Stealthy much?

    3. I haven't been able to use my teacher discount on sale items for a while, then about a month ago my PS told me that I could now as long as the extra percent off was 40 or less. It's hard to know what the policy is because it seems to change so often. Plus, it depends on each store's manager as to whether they follow the policies to the letter of the law.

As for non-sale items, if the item has a % off, then I am not allowed to use my teacher discount; if it has a $ amount off, then I can. It's hard to keep up, JC.

I am grateful for the discount, but would appreciate if they would make a decision and then stick with it.

    4. @math teacher - I'm a graduate student so I have my ID for the discount and I've been given it on everything: $ off, % off, % off sale. It seems like it depends on which associate is ringing me but they've been pretty nice about it lately. Even placed an online order in store and the phone associate gave me student discount on a clearance item. This has all been at the same regular retail store though - my factory store won't give me the student discount on top of a % promo.

    5. That in-store online order I mentioned I placed Thursday, btw. So some stores are definitely still honoring it. I didn't expect it to work but they did it for me.

    6. More adventures in shopping.....I ordered a few things from Ann Taylor online. I really liked the gray jeans, but even though I ordered the size I'm wearing in every other line, they were too tight. so I go in the store and ask to exchange them. She rings me up the full price. I point out that I want to exchange at the price I paid for them. She says " they not on sale".....this lady's English was limited....I say "I don't understand. They were on sale when I purchased them". She says..."they not on sale in store". I say..."so, what you are trying to say is that you will not honor the price I paid to do an exchange". Then she says...."you still want?".....GGRRR!!! I said...."that's ridiculous". Well.....I just had to leave. The combination of a stupid unfriendly policy and a c/s person who couldn't communicate just made me very irritated. I was beginning to really like that store too. Well now I know. This new knowledge will definitely alter how I shop there. That and they have a $175.00 limit to get free shipping online which I think it too high. Why are there so many rules and restrictions to give my money to stores? When it's apparent by the zillions of emails I get daily with "deals" that they want my money, but it feels like a big joke sometimes the hops one has to jump through to buy things. seems that my shopping pattern is....spring/fall new things come out and I get excited. I buy a few things, jump through all the hops, do the returns, etc. then I'm so burned out feeling I don't buy anything else the rest of the year. Does anyone else feel like this about shopping?

      Delete
    7. That would be "hoops". geez. Maybe if I had some hops I would be more relaxed. Ha.

    8. Stray Cat, that stinks but I think the sales associate was mistaken. I have ordered something online that was the wrong size and when I called cs they honored the original sale price and shipped my item for free. I think the biggest problem here is inconsistency! It's obviously a problem just based on this thread with the student discount. And sadly, it's not limited to retail clothing stores.

      Delete
    9. @Stray Cat - yeah, they should always do an even exchange, that's truly bizarre. I recently started shopping at AT and while I do love what I've gotten there, I don't really care for what I presume is the culture they expect their SAs to have. Yes, I really only want to spend 80 dollars today, no, I don't want to order anything else, I took 8 items into the fitting room hoping to buy them all but yet again I sized out of them and no, I don't want to order 6 XXS items sight unseen b/c you don't carry in store. Really? And then they offer the stupid card opening discount with a tone like because I'm only buying a few things it means I will trip over myself and open a new card just to save $5. Meanwhile, I go over to the Crew and order one $20 clearance item and the SA asks me how I like the skirt I ordered with him 2 weeks ago, that even *I* forgot about.

Sorry, I'm ranting because I'm still salty about my last AT visit. I'd go in and buy more if I didn't feel like I was obligated to spend some specific amount every time. I'm sure that's coming from the corporate level and not individual SAs because I've found Loft is the same way.

      Delete
    10. Hi Stray Cat - call AT's 800 number and there should be an option for Quick Exchange. They'll process an order for the item at the price you paid, with free shipping. I've done this several times for Loft, so I assume AT is the same. Good luck!

    11. Thank you so much everyone! Your knowledge is boundless! I called Customer Service and he was happy to send me another pair of jeans for the price I paid. All I can say is that store employees must be educated better! One thing I always say about J. Crew is that their employees always seem to be well educated and if they don't know at least they care and will try to help. There were 3 employees in Ann Taylor that day and all of them, including the manager, could not having given a flying you know what about me. Don't THEY know what I just learned from you guys! And to comment on what RJ said.....I've been very pressured in many stores lately. You just can't return something....or just look around...without being questioned and really harassed about trying things on, etc. The other day in Banana Republic the sales boy (guy?) wanted me to try on some very silly looking jeans and model them for him (!) because he had not seen them on anyone yet. I told him "you're asking the wrong person". Really! I always stress that I WILL find them if I have a question, but they persist and it makes me want to just walk right out. And what I truly can't abide is the shaming I get when I won't sign up for their credit card. I understand that management makes the employees pressure customers to open new accounts, but how many times must I say "no thank you" only to get a lecture from someone who doesn't even know me. I even had a Target employee tell me she was surprised I didn't have a Target credit card because "I look like such a smart lady". Yeah.....I couldn't believe it either and I heard it with my own ears!

    12. As a fellow J.Crew employee as well as a lover of the brand. I can confirm that you are allowed to use your college and teacher id on top of the sale % off items. The only time that you will not be able to combine the two would be if it was a transaction discount i.e. $25 off your purchase of $100 or more or 30% off your entire purchase.

  9. I just want to talk about how much I LOVE the Lookout High-Rise jean. I have three pairs now - Kirk wash, the black sateen finish wash & the black crops. Wearing the black crops again today! They're so fab. They wash well, stretchy but not baggy... I LOVE these jeans! Hopefully I can score another pair (or two!) on my next trip to the clearance store. (I paid $23 for the black cropped pair... much more palatable than the $115 retail price.)

    2. Agree!!! I have the let out hem and a pair of white that I dug out of a cardboard box at the warehouse sale for $10.00 I think. I think I am going to order another pair of the let out hem because I love them so much.

    3. I, too, love the Lookouts-soo good! Good enough I am debating biting the bullet on the gray with 30% off. The idea I'm missing out on bargain prices on them hurts my soul! Taylor, wanna be my clearance store J Crew mule??? Ha!

    5. There is a warehouse sale in Charlotte this weekend for anyone in that area. I think it is Friday, Saturday and Sunday and not sure of the location. If anyone wants info, I can try to find the email. Also, just ordered another pair of the let out hem ones in case anything happens to the pair that I have. They are on sale for $69.99 with 30% off at the store.

  10. Slightly off topic, those of you who are interested in refining your wardrobe, apartmenttheraphy.com is in the first day of a 9 day series on closet clean out, called The Closet Cure. You can sign up to receive their daily email (today was the first day) with practical tips and a plan to help you get through your closet. Highly recommend.

  11. Review for the collection mixed-media crossover jacket (item C9231) - I really like this piece!

I went down a size, and that gave me a good fit (although the sleeves are a bit long still, I have short arms and could have used a petite here). I purchased it full price right before the 30% off promo, but when I saw it wasn't excluded, called and got a price adjustment.

It is just kind of cool and architectural and makes me feel cool when I put it on. A black wool jacket/coat that isn't just basic, but is unusual and interesting. Please, JCrew, hang in there, every once in a while you make me love you again!

  15. Looks like a few interesting things! I wonder what the Campbell blazer will be like? Is it the new School Boy? Like the looks of the tweed cape, although unless I got it cheap it wouldn't warrant a place in my wardrobe. Also it might look too Sherlock Holmes for me. ha.

  17. I received my order from the first day of the Labor Day 30% promotion today. I ordered the Collection Leather Tank Top (e1593) in two sizes to try. I think the piece runs a little big. Although its a layering piece, it still needs to be fairly sleek and fitted since its leather. I wanted it to fit tighter than it is on the model. Its beautiful, soft leather. It is unlined, but the stitching is all even and looks like it will hold. The zipper in the back (small zipper at the neck) is a little flimsy. Its hidden and plastic, but I feel like it could have been a little more substantial (not exposed, though). The price after 30% off is not astronomical (I purchased the Madewell x Sezane leather skirt earlier this year and the quality is comparable, the amount of leather is comparable, if not a little less for the skirt, and the skirt did not have the amount of stitching (the shirt is eight panels all sewn together) and the skirt was $50 less than the promo price of the shirt). Its definitely a unique, statement piece. If I lived in New York City, I'd keep it in a heartbeat. I'm probably going to keep it anyway, but I'm going to pretend that I'm going to mull it over.

P.S. If anyone wants to provide styling ideas, I'd love them!

    1. You know what . . . I take everything back! Ha ha. I tried them on again (both sizes) and looked good and hard at it. It just doesn't "do" enough for me. It's not flattering enough. It's sort of straight up and down and the neckline is high. It's not $250 of awesomeness and they are both going back. My bank account is breathing a sign of relief!

(On a side note, the Madewell jumpsuit I ordered is awesome and that is staying in my closet).

      Delete
    2. Hi Blake - Sorry to hear the leather tank didn't work out for you. I don't get the package till tomorrow. I hope size 2 fits me. I guess I wouldn't be as bummed if it didn't work out, considering the price.

Which a Madewell jumpsuit did you order? I'm liking the denim jumper that Maqsad reviewed on her IG. I'm also liking this long sleeve (w/ breast pockets) jumper too. But it may not fit me at 4'11, madewell doesn't offer petite sizing.

      Delete
    3. It's the Carroll Tank Jumpsuit. The inseam is 29 inches, so it may work for you. I'm 5'3 ish and the XS fit well.

The tank is nice (although I think you may find the 2 is too big), but it's just not fantastic. Considering I have a leather jacket, a leather miniskirt, and the leather Pixie pants, I probably don't need this top. If it made me feel amazing, I would keep it because is such a cool piece. Unfortunately, it falls short of amazing for me.

      Delete
    4. Okay, so I received the Collection Leather Tank (e1593), and I will be returning it, too. Ordered a size 2 because it doesn't have darts, and I'm a 36B. It fits, but because of my chest (ugh), the bottom part of the tank didn't hang flat, it sort of ruffled. For the price, it's not worth keeping.

  19. I got my last few summer items today. I ordered a pair of the white arizona birkenstocks and I think they are very nice. The leather is a pebble grain and the bottoms are white (which I think is exclusive to J.Crew). They are on super sale right now compared to what they normally run. I do go by the no white shoes after labor day so they will go up until next year. I was also able to get the boy shirt in crinkle gingham in blue on a popback, now I have both colors. This is a great shirt to just throw on with anything. I love the loose fit.

    1. DD, I also picked up the white Birkenstocks during the last sale! They are very nice! How did you feel about the sizing? I wear a size 8 but went with the 38 (7.5), and still had some extra room in the length.

      Delete
    2. I am an 8 as well and got the 38. They fit fine, I don't think I could have gone down. This is my first pair ever so I look forward to next year.

    3. Yeah, I can't size down either. I'm just glad I didn't go with the 39. I had a pair of Birkenstocks back in high school (over 15 yrs ago)!!

  20. I've seen the catalog and there is a very pretty blue color (wave mist) in the Rhodes Herringbone blazer.

They've brought back the Chateau Parka (Regal Blue, Dusty Ginger, Heather Dusk, Heather Mustard, Heather Turqoise, Electric Red and Black) and the Wool Melton Toggle coat (Caramel, Black, Heather Petunia, Heather Light Grey).

  22. Belted Oxford Dress e1566- after much stalking I finally managed to snag a popback of the pale blue color and I'm really happy. (I kept missing it online but I just happened to call cs in the middle of the day and they had one in stock so I think it was meant to be lol). The color is a lovely light blue although it is a little see through (my white bra showed through so def need nude undergarments). I think the quality is good and it feels good on/comfortable while looking a bit unique. The side silk panel is a nice touch. The back falls just above my knees but the front is a bit shorter than the online pic (I'm 5'7"). The buttons don't seem to gape but I won't wear it to work (not comfortable with the possibility since it buttons all the way down). I normally am a 0 in jcrew dresses but took a 2 in this to get at least a little drape although not as much as appears on the model. Overall I'm really happy with this purchase and am def keeping. I can see why it sold out so fast.
