J.Crew Email: Straight from Jenna's desk

"Thanks!" to xoxo, as well as Girlification of Jules (in this post), who let us know about another email J.Crew sent out today.

The email above features the not-yet-officially-released-online Exhibitor Mega Tote (Item 29448; $375.00). J.Crew describes this Fall bag as:
For those of us who love keeping their carryall options open, we're thrilled to introduce this cleverly tough-chic design chameleon in luscious black leather with glossy gold zipper and chain hardware. This ingeniously designed handbag features a bottom that unzips to add even more capacity, and a crossbody strap that can be attached to the middle of the bag, creating a much smaller foldover. Crafted in smooth, luxurious soho cow leather, it has antiqued-finish gold-plated hardware, a magnetic snap closure and oodles of pockets, including two roomy main compartments separated by a zip pocket, as well as a plethora of extra hiding places. At any size, this uber-versatile three-in-one wonder is our hands-down-must-have this season. Exterior zip pocket. Interior back-wall zip pocket, front-wall split-patch cell pocket. Cotton twill lining. Part of the J.Crew Collection. Import. Comes with dust bag. Removable, adjustable shoulder strap fully extends to 22". 8 1/2" handle drop. 15"H x 20"W
Personally, I am not feeling the bag. Which I am surprised at, because I usually love bags with lots of pockets and with a shoulder strap. But it's my impression from only seeing one image. I would need to see it in-person to make any final judgment.

Slightly off topic... You know how J.Crew offers additional views of the bag, including an interior shot, for select handbags? It would be great to see those varying shots (from the side, inside, and on a live model) available for all bags, and not just some. :)

What are your thoughts on the Exhibitor Mega Tote? Do you like the bag? Will you order it?

  1. Forget that mega bag with the too tiny shoulder straps, I want that yellow blazer Jenna's wearing!

  2. What on earth is a soho cow? I'm picturing cows moseying up to Balthazar for french fries, or something .... LOL.

Anyway, no. I don't like this bag at all. I'm sure the leather is luscious and the craftsmanship is great, but I don't care for the shape or the way the handles are so out of proportion with the bag itself. Ah well.

  3. Simple rule: If I can't lift it when it's empty, I know I'll never carry it when it's full. Or half-full.

  4. This is the same bag in #5 of the Fall Lookbook. The bottom of the bag is zippered. I prefer the black over the beechwood and olive colors. It's hard to judge this bag from just 1 photo.

  5. Gah. J. Crew cannot make a modest-sized bag to save their life. I love big bags, don't get me wrong, but sometimes I need something smaller than carry-on size but bigger than a clutch and J. Crew does not fill that void.

  6. For 3/4 of the year, I carry the monster of all monster bags, a Marc Jacobs Stella ... but somehow it looks/feels small in comparison to this one! lol

  7. Just the bag I've been obsessing over to effortlessly carry around my beagle in.

  8. I don't know if this is the best thread to leave this on, but following up on my order from July 3rd that didn't say "final sale" during the checkout process even though it was during the final sale...my packing slip does not say final sale either. I guess that's one benefit to being an insomniac (this was like 5am, I hadn't yet slept, and their website was glitchy). HOWEVER, TWO of my items came defective. The scalloped zipper cardigan has a pull in the knit on the upper arm. I already called and asked them to ship another. But then I got to looking at my silk pockets cardigan, and the arm seam is VERY strange. Does anyone else have this cardigan that can attest? I just took pictures but realized I can't post them here. The left arm is normal. The right arm, the seam, past the elbow, twists completely and ends at the middle of my hand! It really looks strange, I can't imagine this would be normal. I will send the pics to the blogger and see if she will post them. I am hesitant to call about this one because they said the new scalloped zipper cardigan I would be getting would be final sale. Fine, I know I am keeping that. I am not so sure about this sweater, I might have fit an XS better than a S.

  9. I preordered this in black based on the very early pix I saw of it. I have a medium, structured black bag but needed something bigger and sloppier so its worth a try as I can return it--it will be my first JC bag. It seems most JCAs love their bags.

  10. Loved the fact that they used the words "oodles" and "plethora". Can't believe she said "obsessed" again. LOL

*I do like the bag in the look book ;D

  11. ReginaO:

I think it's the Lexington blazer from 2006-2007 (Balenciaga knockoff). I was obsessed and bought 4 different colors. Just wore the pink one yesterday.

  12. Mega bag indeed! This is way too large for my taste. Expanded, it is almost two feet long! I can't imagine the strain on my back/neck from carting this around even half full.

  13. On a bag this large, those tiny chainlinked handles are a huge mistake.

  14. OT, but since it is the last day for the dress promo I wanted to weigh in on the superfine cotton Emmaleigh dress. I believe Marietta reviewed this dress when it first came out. I bought it based on her recommendation and because of the superfine cotton suiting fabric that was so wonderful last year.

The Emmaleigh dress is very flattering, much more so than it appears in the model shots. The top is ample enough for larger busts without pulling and there are front pockets for convenience as well. The superfine cotton weave has stretch, which makes it comfortable beyond compare yet it keeps its shape all day. It is lined, which helps keep the wrinkles to a minimum, too. I have worn the dress alone, with a cardi on top, with a turtleneck and also with a tee underneath for a jumper look. I may try it with a perfect shirt underneath come fall. The cotton is great for summer and the navy will transition into fall as well.

The dress is also available in a wool version but I only have the cotton so can't say whether the same holds true for the wool dress.

    HTH someone.

  15. I love J Crew bags, I have a closetful, but this one will not be added to my collection: 1) "huge" doesn't begin to describe it, La Belle Helene could fit TWO beagles in there, 2) those itty bitty gold handles look wildly out of proportion and too precious for such a sloppy workhorse of a bag, and 3) at a height of nearly 2 feet, whatever winds up at the bottom of it would be lost forever.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I agree with Ruffles that whatever ends up at the bottom will get lost and I really hate to have to dig through my purse endlessly to find stuff so this is def a pass for me. And it looks way too flimsy for my liking.

Although i like large bags (i like to carry way too much crap), i like to keep everything organized and also prefer the sturdier leather. So i tried the Gabby satchel and to my surprise it works perfect for my lifestyle. It is large enough, the leather is really soft but sturdy (if that makes any sense) and has compartments. I love it so much, i bought all three colors, all on sale obviously. I know, crazy...

  17. xoxo - Thanks for the recommendation on the dress. Based on your review, I went ahead and ordered the Navy cotton version.
I find it difficult to find work worthy summer clothes. This will help.

  18. My name is Hex and I'm a big bag addict . . . I would consider a bag of this style and shape but I'd have to see it in person first. I'm still feeling burned about my ruined Marche tote so I'm a skeptic on JC handbag quality.

  19. Actually it has a shoulder strap that extends to 22 inches and the bag itself is 20 Wide and 15 High. When it comes I will take some pix of the inside to share. I think I will check out that Gabby satchel that Miss Penny likes... if its worth getting in 3 colors it must be good!

  20. P.S. So much for cardholders getting e-mails with advance notice of new products. That's something that JC expressly promises as a cardholder benefit, but I don't receive these e-mails.

  21. Emily, I hope you like the dress. I liked it so much I bought it in 2 of the 3 superfine cotton colors and have worn them both a fair bit already. They still look great and I reach for them when I'm stuck for what to wear in the morning. So simple to throw on a flattering dress!

  22. I love the green leather with the gold hardware, but at 5'1", this bag seems a *bit* out of proportion with me... Also, I agree with the others about the tiny handles, not to mention, I already have a hard time fishing for stuff at the bottom of my small hobo bag... I imagine having my arm buried to the shoulder with this bag!

    ReplyDelete
  23. From what I see on the model below the bag picture, I believe the small chain-like handles would extend out when held, giving a purse-string effect to the top of the bag. Overall, I just don't like the bag at all; would not want it even if they gave it away for free.

  24. Hexicon, I hear you! I am a JCrew cardholder, and a regular customer, and I am starting to get miffed when I see these promos that I never get. I feel like I'm in high school and finding out what the "cool kids" are getting that I am not entitled too, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Have to agree with Chrissy and others... it's too large for us petite girls (and by the way, the AVERAGE N. American woman is 5'4"). It is quite out of proportion. And the temptation to pack your life in it and drag it around town is just too great...my chiropractor would have a snit if he saw me carting it around.

Agree with Alexis that JC's handbag pages can be improved with more views. I don't think they need to go as far as Coach does, where you can pick from a selection of different height virtual models to let you see the scale of the bag, but we can all guess from seeing a bag on a 5'10" model if it's going to be huge or just right.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Guess I'm in the minority because I actually like the bag.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I really like the bag in the lookbook picture--it was one of the few items from the lookbook I actually wanted. I don't like the standalone pic so much. I may order to try it out IRL when there's a promo or markdown. $375 is a bit much for a JC handbag.

  28. I'm not a fan of the bag. The handle looks very awkward. I suspect it would be annoying IRL use.

Buttercup, I have the wonderful Lexington blazer 3 colors (black, grey, pink), but after seeing that picture of Jenna I'm wishing I'd also picked up the yellow. I remember the yellow blazers languishing in the clearance section, too...

  29. The zipper along the bottom reminds me a little of the new Rebecca Minkoff Devote totes. I think the bag is really pretty, but I doubt annnnnyone would actually use that extender.
