Educator & Student Discount: Shopper's Tip

Anonymous at 9:13 PM shared with us a great tip in the "J.Crew Comments on Current Situation" post. J.Crew offers an educator's discount (of 15%) and a student discount (of 10%) on any order. I thought that this was only possible at their brick & mortar stores (either at the counter or using the red phone) because an associate had to verify your status and check the school ID. Well, Anonymous at 9:13 PM let us know that it applies to orders over the phone from home (or the office, car, anywhere besides the J.Crew red phone). All you have to do is tell them that you are an educator or a student, then provide them with your email address (that will act as a verification of your status).

There have been a few other members of the blog who said that they have been able to do this as well. There have also been others who said that this was not true.

Well, when I called J.Crew about my order from last Friday, I thought to ask the customer service representative if I could indeed, apply my educator's discount over the phone from home- and she confirmed that this was true!!!

You can apply the discounts for online orders too! Just call after the recent online purchase to confirm the discount (and school email address) with the customer service rep. Moreover, Mad about madras let us know (in this post) that you can also send an e-mail (from the school email address) with the online order number for J.Crew to apply the discount.

Are you excited that you can apply the discount from calling in anywhere ? Are you thinking about all those orders you made in the past few weeks, that you could have applied the discounts to. [I know I am! :) But I am really just happy to know that we are able to use the discounts over the phone from anywhere!!!] Thanks again Anonymous at 9:13 PM!

  1. This is so exciting. I am a teacher and this discount makes all the difference. I'm going to go shop right now. Thank you so much for looking into this.

  2. Anonymous at 4:44PM: I am just as excited as you are about this. I think it is great they are offering the discounts off-site. :)

  3. This is trilling to me as a student because the nearest J. Crew is 3 hours away!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Stephanie: 3 hours is far to visit just a J.Crew! But this additional area of applying the discount is fantastic!!!

  5. If you place an order online, send an e-mail with your confirmation number and they will apply the discount. The e-mail must be sent from your school address. This works for the student and educator discounts.

  7. I've never ordered over the phone from J. Crew, but once they get their act together I will definitely be using my student discount. Thanks for the tip!

  10. I just want to say Thank you to Slastena who posted that the Beaded Flower Tie Belts are now on sale for $29.99 in the J Crew and the 4th of July thread.

I have been lusting after these belts for months now. I absolutely adore them. When I first checked the site, the Accessories page showed the belts as being $68. But when I clicked on it, they were on sale for $29.99. I am envious (in a good way, that is) that Salastena received a 25% discount at the store but seeing that I don't have a store within a 5 hour driving radius, I purchased it on line. I got the Pink and Yellow and am very grateful for the heads up on the sale. BIG THANK YOU to Salastena!!!

Just a heads up, I was able to purchase it online with NO hickup. The checkout process was super smooth with no downtime and I was able to get it with free shipping to boot! Thanks again!

  11. I re-discovered J Crew about 2 years ago and have been hooked ever since. I used to think of it as a very preppy store (and not preppy in a good way, but preppy in a boring, shapeless polo dress sort of way.) The way it has changed over the past few years has been fabulous. I now would describe it's style as totally chic, classic, high style, sophiticated.

I am a teacher, and before the teacher's discount I used to buy a few special things a year just to spruce up my closet full of Gap. SINCE the educator's discount I have slowly (but not slowly enough for my credit card to catch up unfortunately) have begun converting my closet into a wardrobe full of J Crew. The 15% is *just* enough to help me justify a purchase that I would have otherwise thought was out of my price range. It has made me a VERY regular J crew shopper (I'm in the store once a week now and online a LOT.) I'm totally hooked! :)

If anyone from J Crew is reading this---thank you for recognizing teachers and understanding that we're in a profession that is simply not going to ever make us rich. We do however like the opportunity to be able to dress well and look sharp and put together in the classroom!

  12. I also have never had a problem using the educator's discount over the phone (and for online orders that I have placed) and have always really really appreciated being able to do that!!! :)

  13. I have never had a problem getting the educator's discount over the phone, either...plus, once it is in your profile as verified, then you shouldn't be required to "verify" each time you place a new order. :)

  14. I'm Anonymous at 9:13. I'm so glad that the info helped. Thanks, too, about the tip on sending the order number through email to place online orders. This is good because we all know sometimes the good stuff doesn't last long and it will save the time writing order numbers down then calling in the order. Love this blog!! Keep up the good work!!

  18. i totally used the student discount - at first they wanted my student ID so i told them it was also my SS# (which was true) and so they just verified my student address (which is still active); she said all they needed was something ending in .edu; they also used this in conjunction with the FREESHIP discount! i'm totally psyched!!

  19. Well, once again my comment doesn't really pertain to the subject (i.e. educator/student discount) but I had to share that if anyone has the Slub-Cotton Femme top (mine is in Pistachio) I paired it today with white cotton drawstring shorts (from last summer) and J Crew Gold Capri sandals. Accessorized with medium gold hoops and a small gold locket from J Crew (can't think of the name off hand). Got lots of compliments. Looked so summery and feminine. I just love the way J Crew makes getting dressed so much FUN!!! LOL.

  21. Do you have to be in college or can you get a student discount if you are in high school.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Jcrewjunkie:
Your outfit sounds great! I completely agree that it is so much fun to dress up w/J crew. I wish we could somehow incorporate our own pics in various outfits into this blog and then enable some sort of "search" function. For instance, I want to see what gals are wearing Frances blouse with: click and here are several different pics. That' would be so exciting.

  23. thank you! I'm so excited I can now apply my student id to online orders, no hassle:) Especially great because I wear pants in petite and they're never to be found in the stores!

  27. I home school and am a private tutor...I have a current, valid teaching certificate though so I just show a copy of that...I obviously can't use that on phone orders b/c I don't have an educators email address at a school. I was told I could fax a copy to JCrew but I am not sure about handing over the certifcate info. etc. for security reasons...private issues, etc. Not worth the 15% discount....

  28. Is there a time limit on this? I've been making online purchases as a student for years, with no discount. :(

  29. Anyone else a fan of JJill? I like their tops and skirts. I like what they are offering now....The customer gets to choose...free shipping (off $100) or 25% off sale prices.

Plus, if you have their card and use it EVERY ORDER is 5% off.....better than JCrew's NOTHING:) And since it was my birthday month I got more....

Ordered a ton of stuff and am happy with the ease of website use:)

  30. Boden is also having a big sale....flat rate shipping...just bought two of their fun skirts.....LOVE the teal with the big orange/red flower and also got the tan with white flowers...They have Talls too:)which they call Long.

  31. I got my MSW (i am not a counselor, but a fundraiser) and b/c I work in a school I get the educators discount. But if I worked for another organization I wouldn't. I think JCrew should recognize people who work for non-profits in general. They make less money than teachers do. I know a lot of my MSW classmates love Jcrew and they are making about half of what I make. Just a thought. Agree, disagree?

  32. Does anyone know if we can use our discount in the Factory Stores?

    ReplyDelete
  33. MSM: As far as I know, the discounts do not apply at the Factory stores. (I personally don't understand why not.) :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. blumre I see your point, but I also see that for JCrew it would be a "slippery slope".... social workers, hospital workers, anyone in service professions.... anyone making minimum wage ;)

I so think it's a nice gesture (Ann Taylor Loft also does it---20% for teachers) One that I truly appreciate.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Josie: Thanks for the hint about ann taylor... how fabulous! THanks for telling us! I actually do like ann taylor for work clothes!

I also do see the slippery slope and I am thankful for my discount on a daily basis.

Well I am off in an hour or so to Tanglewood and James Taylor (decked out in my cropped matchstick jeans, luxe hoodie and tank top)... Tomorrow will be golf in madras in the berkshires! I can't wait for my oh so JCrew weekend.

What does eveyone think about JCrews doggie line btw? My dog passed away last week and while I am so not ready for a new puppy yet (and I will always rescue and never get from a breeder)I cant wait to deck my new boy or girl out in JCrew stuff. Do you all use the jcrew dog line?

  36. jcrewjunkie: There were lots of Sanur dresses, in various sizes, at the Palo Alto, CA store! They had green, blue and pinky / red. I scooped up the last navy one though. :)

  37. blumre: what color Lux Hoodie did you go with? I have it in several colors as I absolutely LOVE it!! What shoes did you end up wearing? I love to hear about other JC lovers outfits!!

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your doggie. We lost our cat of TWENTY years around Christmas and it was truly traumatic.

I have one of the dog collars from the J Crew doggie line and it looks darling on our Shitzhu.

  40. Aficionadas: I just got off the phone with a wonderful CSR named Wanda who applied the student discount to all the orders I have made in the past week. Thank you so so much for this tip! I am so happy to have found a little community to share in my obsession AND to help salvage my poor little bank account, haha. I will endeavor to be as helpful and supportive in return :)

Btw, I went to my local b&m to exchange some things I got last weekend for size, and they told me they would only do the discount on non-final-sale items. In other words, full price and sale items can have the discount, but not final sale because they get the extra 25% off. Ah, I simply adore the mystery and drama behind J.Crew's student discount policy.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Thank you so much for this info! The CS rep just applied this discount to my order, and advised that I simply send an email to JCrew (from my teaching email account) to have them update my profile for future purchases.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Michelle: it is NOT true that the student discount can't be applied to final sale items. I have had the discount applied MANY times. Once I was told that it couldn't be applied, and I came back to the same store later and it was applied successfully.

A manager explained it to me: if you use a coupon to get 25% off (like when they send a coupon in email), then you can't also use the student discount. But since the current 25% off is automatic, you can use it. Sometimes employees are confused about this. Just take your receipt back in and ask for the discount to be applied. They should be able to do this for you. Maybe call ahead to make sure.

  45. FYI the rep I just had said she would not honor both a free shipping code and a student discount. Anyone else with the same experience??

    ReplyDelete
  46. Anon: I have never had that experience... but seriously, you can't order on the website they are supposed to honor that stuff. Especially, with all the crap they have put everyone through. I would call back and ask for that to be honored and if you ordered at that time I would call and ask for the discount to be applied.

I am sorry it used tot ake 5 maybe 10 minutes to place an order online and now its 20-30 because everything has to be called in. They need to fix this.

  47. For what it's worth, I was just at the J.Crew factory outlet in Tilton, NH, and they let me apply the educator's discount, but it came out to be 10% instead of 15%. I didn't want to push it, since they were nice enough to give the discount, but the cashier told me that the educator's discount is now 10%. Maybe she meant at the outlets? Anyone experience this?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Does the student discount apply to items on sale? I tried to use mine at one of the B&M stores but the associate said it only applied to regular priced items. There's nothing on the website to indicate that though.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hey, Its a bummer but according to the posts on this site, some stores seem to allow it while others don't. And even then some associates seem to allow it when others wont. You could always try going to another store and seeing if that works.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I also had no luck at JCrew in Manhattan (Time Warner Center store). The cashier would not let me use my student discount on any sale items:( I wish JCrew would post terms & conditions of the student discount policy, so we are not left at mercy of sales clerks, whose decisions seem to be often arbitrary.

    ReplyDelete
  51. The decision is indeed arbitrary :(

I got student discount + extra 30 on a Final Sale item. If I know the student discount won't be honored, I will choose to not make the purchase. It makes all the difference.

I tried to get my 15% applied to over $750 worth of online promo orders, and all I was given was a credit of $3.15... apparently that's all that "qualified" for a credit)... nice.

  52. I recently had a similar experience which was extremely frustrating. I was provided with inconsistent information from different phone associates, some of which was not even confirmed by their supervisor. This is what I wrote to JCrew Customer Service this morning. I took some comments I found on various online blogs, and included it in my email:

    Dear JCrew Customer Services,

I am a frequent shopper at JCrew stores and online. Recently, I've been provided with different information regarding the applicability of the student discount to my online/phone orders. In stores, when I make a purchase or order (through the red phone), regardless of the current promotions, extra percentage off, I am always able to show a valid student ID and get an additional 15% off my entire purchase. However, on the phone, this seems to be extremely inconsistent and confusing. At times, I am able to apply my student discount without a problem, but during other times, the associates give me an extremely hard time and does not allow me to use the student discount, making the shopping experience very unpleasant.

When trying to place an order on 3/10, a sales associate from the Lynchburg call center told me I would NEVER be able to apply my student discount if I am to use ANY other promotion codes. This was inconsistent with what I experienced on the phone on my previous orders are well as the shopping experiences in stores. To address this concern, I called customer service on 3/10 and 3/11, and I was told that I would not be able to combine "same" types of coupons (e.g. coupons that applied to my entire order), but I would be able to apply the student discount if the coupons applied to "specific" items in my order (e.g. a specific final sale item). I was also told that IF I made my order ONLINE myself and not through the phone, I just have to send in an email from my student address, and the discount would ALWAYS apply - is this true? If this is true, I would certainly not want to go through explaining to the sales associate over the phone if I can apply the student discount to any purchases or types of orders I make online. To reiterate, all this information is extremely confusing and laced with inconsistency, especially when the information provided by the associate on the phone (can never use student discount with any promotions) and in-store (can apply student discount to ANY purchase) don't even match up!

Before writing to voice this concern, I did some research online, and I noticed that many other students are also having this same issue with online/phone orders:

"After spending $600, I was extremely disappointed that J Crew would not apply the 15% student discount. I was told that because I used the TURKEY code, it could not be applied. However, I had a friend who received the discount on top of the TURKEY code the day before. The thing that irks me is that nowhere on their website does it say that the student/teacher discount cannot be applied w/other discounts, which they readily admit. I will think twice the next time I want to make a J Crew purchase. 15% for a student desperately needing business casual attire adds up when you're spending a significant sum."

"As a store associate, we've heard great responses to this and we DO combine BOTH the teacher's discount as well as the student discount with sale promotions such as the additional 30% that's on now."

"But, they DO need to be consistent. Some cs will give the extra (in addition with other discounts) and some will not. This is the aggravating part. BE CONSISTENT. I do have to say that I have no trouble using it in my b&m, just online and over the phone (both home and red)."

"I was recently told that I could use the student discount if I didn't also use a free shipping code, and then after I placed the order (without free shipping), I was told that I could not apply the student discount after all!"

"Never had a problem combining discounts in the store. I recently got a J Crew Credit Card and used the 10% new card discount + 15% student discount + 40% final sale at my B&M store and didn't have a problem. I have had a problem getting them to combine discounts for online orders. I usually just try for a different CS until I one that will apply all the discounts. A little time consuming...."

As you can see from the compilation of comments I retrieved from various online blogs, alot of other students have been experiencing the same issue. I am writing to suggest JCrew Online/Phone to have consistent policies with the stores. If the stores are able to apply a student discount to ANY orders made by a student with a valid ID, why is it that students are given such a hard time when making phone or online orders? I understand that promotions could vary between stores and online; however, students are still students when we make phone or online orders, I don't understand why the policies are so discrepant and inconsistent. If there is a consistency in the applicability of the student discount to any phone/online/in-store purchases, our shopping experience would be more pleasant.Thank you for your time.

**This may be a waste of time...they probably won't do anything about it...
