JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Would love some advice on colors/outfit ideas for the neon peach mila ballets?

  2. I have the seersucker bermuda shorts. Feeling a little dumb by not knowing what to pair them with besides white shirts. :(

    1. Try them with a coral or orange top.

    2. I would treat them as a neutral. Check out my PV set for the skirt here for some colour ideas.

  3. Miss JR- treat them as a neutral! I love incorporating neon with mine, but for something more subtle, try an olive green v neck tee or pale yellow (new England classic). Considering how hot it is today, I'd pair them with the light hyacinth linen tank too :)

  4. Irl pics of the Raj paisley maxidress in this post. Could use a size opinion.

  5. I have the white eyelet pencil skirt from last summer and it never seems to make it out of my closet. What do other people wear it with? Dark colors seem to start a contrast.
    Thanks!

    1. I used to never wear white bottoms before this summer but now I love it.

Here's a Polyvore set for you. Some of the outfits are with pants but I think they would also work with your pencil skirt.

  6. I'm so mad, I dithered on the Raj paisley dress and somehow in the time between leaving for work and sitting down at my desk, it sold out in almost every size again. Arrgghhh. I was trying to decide if I should get it since I'm really not a maxidress girl. :P Something about the waist makes me wonder if it might be a little too high for me, like too empire as opposed to at the true waist...

Gigi, the pics you just shared help me a lot though, and now I want it. I think the 8 is perfect on you (and I need one too, lol!). Did your store have more than one left?

  7. awesome ideas! thanks ladies :)

  8. Well, no stores anywhere around me had it, but a very nice SA in Charlotte offered to call and put in a WWFIFY. I asked if they'd do it since it's a sale item and she said yes; I asked whether they would take the extra 30% off the sale price and she said yes.

So it remains to be seen how this goes, this is only the second time I've had to resort to WWFIFY. I was so excited that I didn't ask her to verify the price, ooops, so hopefully I can grab the $79.99 - 30% that Gigi mentioned as the in-store price. Fingers crossed!

  9. Hey--I bought the Trastavere 'dress' from several years ago on ebay (see a pic of it here in a different auction: http://www.ebay.com/itm/AmAzInG-J-CREW-TRASTEVERE-SILK-PAISLEY-DRESS-Retail-249-/261046135348?pt=US_CSA_WC_Dresses&hash=item3cc78fea34 ), and am struggling on how to wear it. I say 'dress' because it is very short, and I am very tall, so it is definitely a tunic length on me. The background isn't stark white, so I don't think white tights/slim pants will work. I tried my denim skinny leg capris with it, but they just don't seem to work (maybe because it is silk, and seems too 'dressy' for the denim?). Any ideas are greatly appreciated. I am on the verge of re-selling it :(

    Thanks!
    Wendy

  10. Love this dress, Wendy, congrats! I'd try it with slim silk slacks (say that 3 times fast!) or capris in one of the deeper solid colors.

  11. I just received a pair of Wool Houndstooth Cafe Capri's from the Fall 2011 season. I purchased them on Ebay in a size 2. I probably should've found a 0 but aside from not being quite as fitted as I'd like, they are fine.

What the heck are you ladies wearing with these? They are so different than what I normally wear but so preppy, I had to have them! Thank you!

  12. Somewhat OT, but has anyone successfully (or unsuccessfully) hand washed any of this season's linen sweaters? I like the linen cable cardigan and the tippi, but I'm not a fan of dry cleaning. Thanks!

    1. I've washed the linen Tippi and both the garment-dyed and regular linen cable sweaters from this year. I always wash these sweaters on delicate cycle and throw them in the dryer on medium but take them out before totally dry and lay flat for the final drying. They have consistently shrunk one size and do twist a bit but I buy a size up and don't worry about the torque because it isn't extreme enough to notice, except on this year's cable sweaters with the notched hem.

I prefer the convenience of machine washing these sweaters but I'm fine to live with the consequences. Overall they have held up well as far as wear, I have some from 2008 and 2009 that I still wear. HTH

    2. I washed the Linen cable-knit sweater in the washing machine on delicate and I was a little concerned when it came out. It had shrunk a little.

But then I reshaped it and dried it flat on my drying rack and it's fine now.

  13. Does anyone have tips on how to dress down the double-serge pencil skirts? I have one in royal violet and adore the color, but never wear pencil skirts because they seem so formal. This summer I am working in a super-casual grad student shared office and wearing a pencil skirt in ANY outfit will put me about three notches of formality above most of my officemates (who span the spectrum of jeans to baggy sweatpants). So I would like some advice on how to dress down a crisp pencil skirt *as much as possible,* if indeed it is possible.

    1. Why don't you try it with a t-shirt and sneakers? J.Crew used to style it that way in the catalogs and I always thought it was very cute, but too casual for my office.

    2. I always wear my pencil skirts with the perfect fit v-neck tees--nice and laid back--to in-services where others wear jeans, etc. Also, maybe wearing laid back accessories like a silk scarf in your hair and a pair of moccasins might dress it down.

    3. I'm also digging navy/indigo with violets and purples for some reason...I guess I'm feeling Daphne-ish lately.

    4. Check out how Merrick of the blog Merrick's Art does it with a graphic tee and flat sandals:

  14. anyone has ideas what to wear with the gondola stripe skirt and big apple skirt?

    1. I love the big apple skirt! Would have sprung for it if the petite length had been just a few inches shorter (above my knee rather than covering). How about cobalt blue? I would even do green, in summery lime or emerald/forest green. Or a casual neon yellow tee.

What I find helpful with prints is to pick one color in the print and pretend that the piece is actually a solid in that color.
