"Thanks!" to many of you, including Heidi & Susan (in this post), as well as Laura, Green_Dino, & Lauren (in this post), who let us know that J.Crew had a mini-update to its website today (click here to view online).
There are some new arrivals for men (click here) & women (click here). However, the J.Crew Collection (click here) appears to be the same.
J.Crew has also provided the latest catalog online (click here to view). :)
I am excited to see some new arrivals. As I was looking through the catalog, I thought a few different things. [1] I like the use of neutrals (black, white, khaki, denim) with the pop of color (pink). [2] What is up with the styling for Women? Again, lots of layers, little sense. [3] The Men's section is flawless, as expected. From the clothes to the styling... bravo! :) As for specific items...
The Good: I am liking the Beacon Purse (Item 24905; $168.00) and the Metallic Beacon Purse (Item 23189; $168.00). There is something about this bag's shape & strap that I am drawn too. Also, I like the Chiffon Ruffle Cardigan (Item 23771; $88.00). J.Crew always "gets me" when they pair a simple cardigan with sweet ruffled chiffon trim.
The Questionable: Like many JCAs, I do not understand the Sequin Chino Short (Item 19903; $198.00). The sequins are dressy, but the shorts are casual. So where would one wear these? And I am not fond of the color transition from tan to white. I am not sure about the Sweeping Ruffles Shirt (Item 22852; $98.00) either. I might need to see this top in-person for any final judgment.
What items are you most excited about and why? Which items are you surprised (or not surprised) to see? Which items did you hope would be included? Were you expecting a bigger roll-out today? Also, did you receive the latest catalog? :)
I am tempted by a couple of items, I like the shirts, and the Bermuda shorts even though I am months away from wearing them.
ReplyDeleteI posted this on another thread, you can order some Madewell items through JC website now, under the Designer Gallery.
I like the pink gingham shirt. Otherwise, the rollout is more of the same - bland colors, overly short skirts, and ruffled tops.
ReplyDeleteAh! It's the Ruthie ruffle shell that I saw the other day in the store. Cute, but another #$*&! side-zip top. I feel that JC continues to make the same execution mistakes over and over. Like the Twyla tank - again, a cute concept but likely unlined, but I couldn't wear a regular bra underneath. And the styling on the cotton Nico skirt? Yikes! I just want to throw a robe over the model.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I like that they brought the superfine cotton back for the suiting pieces (totally worth it, even at FP), and think that the ruffled gamine jacket and crosshatch cotton Blaine jacket are cute. The rest, I feel, has been done (and even overdone) and I could recreate the looks with pieces I already have. Personally, I'd like to see some nautical-inspired stuff for spring.
So my wallet is happy, but I love this time to hear what other JCA's think!
I like the gingham perfect shirts, the Ruthie (better than the Evie), and I really liked the Beacon purse too. I'd love to try the yellow for some color but am thinking maybe the pale gold or antique stone.
ReplyDeleteOh and I must have some shorts in nickel and amethyst!! Back to perusing.
I really like the Doogwood link bracelet and Dogwood Decadence Necklace. Otherwise I'm just happy to see a couple of sweaters I was interested in before restocked. Not ready for resort or spring yet. Thanks for the heads up JCAs!
ReplyDeleteI found a few things I like: stained glass cardi,
ReplyDeletesoleil paisley tunic,
lolly mini clutch in cantalope and tea rose,
chloe platform sandals...
going back for a second look. Nice to do on a cold rainy morning!
"Suckered" shirt? Oh, silly Crew. Don't they know it's not suckered, it's drank the crewlade?
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Everyone! I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas! :)
ReplyDeleteNew Arrivals: YAY...it's great to see something new online! :) I found quite a few things this time around. I like the Long Beach cardigan, Crinkled Silk Shell (YAY for a back zip), Scalloped Petal Top, Chambray Popover, Stripe Cotton Popover (which I already own in Deep Hydrangea), Broken-In Boyfriend Chino Short, Blaine Jacket, and Lolly Mini Clutch.
Have a great day! :)
I'm missing the slub cotton tees, which are perfect for dressy or casual events. Will they come out with more?
ReplyDeleteI'm really liking the Beacon bags in pale oak (can you tell I'm already looking forward to spring?) but why doesn't the website show more pictures of the bags against mannequins, so we can better judge the proportions? I hate having to do math with the measurements just to figure out whether the Beacon hobo might be the right size for me.
ReplyDeleteI saw some of the new items in store yesterday and nothing really caught my eye. Honestly, I'm bored with the colors, or lack of colors and the ruffles which were were so fresh a couple of years ago are beginning to feel a bit stale imo. How many variations of the same top can a girl own? I wish they would shake things up a bit....
ReplyDeleteI see a few things I like, but as Silver-lining said, I could recreate most of the looks from items already in my wardrobe. I love the driving mocs and the Sperry Topsiders, but I already own several pairs of each. I adore the gingham shirts, but I own both colors in the cotton check shirt. I'll probably buy one of the pastel gingham colors and a few new tees, as I usually do, but I don't see anything that I feel like I MUST have.
ReplyDeleteHad a chance to browse a bit more, and I kept checking out the silk Taryn dress. Boy is that pretty, and such a nice array of colors. I wonder if it is extremely boob-pancake-ing? I like last summer's jersey twist top version, but it wasn't the "perkiest" in the world.
ReplyDeleteOMGWTF: sequin shorts and gold lame' topsiders. And the new Neon Rose color I saw the cashmere cardi in? Yowsa. I'm a color fan big time, and that's a bit much.
The merino stained glass cardi looks cool, I love the mix of colors. I've been really Goldilocks about many of the newer sweaters though. Once I try them on their either TOO long or TOO short, very few are just right. I like where the stained glass hits the model, but my D cups may make the front higher than I'd like.
Looks like they restocked the sequin jaspe sweatshirt that I remember some people looking for a bit ago, s-xl are available.
I LOVE the girls' chino ruffle jacket! I'll definitely be looking to snag that one on sale for DD. Not too much going on as far as new arrivals go on the CC side.
The new arrivals were fun to look at and kept me out of the final sale section! I did order the Stained glass cardi as I am a sucker for fun cardi's. The swimsuit with this print has been around for awile and I was hoping to see it in something else. The Sweeping Ruffles shirt looked fun and I was tempted to purchase, but then I came to my senses and realized that a big ruffle on my bum was not going to look so good!
ReplyDeleteI'm anxious to try on the anorak. I love that it comes in navy!
ReplyDeleteI'm mostly uninspired but I LOVE the Soleil paisley silk tunic! Wondering if I could do this pantsless like the model... I'm 5'3" so maybe I could get away with it?
ReplyDeleteOk I'm crazy... I keep looking at the Soleil tunic and think it might be amazing with brown tights and brown boots for New Year's... if any of my fellow JCAs are in an NYC B&M today and see it, would you let me know? Thanks!! darashapiro(at)gmail
ReplyDeletePer the usual for me there are about 5 things that I like in the rollout and 1 thing that I love- the Blakely dress. I will wait to see reviews from other bloggers on the items I like before I purchase them.
ReplyDeleteNot a fan of the elastic waistband skirt or the sequin shorts.
I was purusing the catalog online and noticed the Carly dress on page 12. There's no link to it on the website. It is super cute! Has anyone seen this in stores or know anything about it?
ReplyDeleteFinally made it to the Crewcuts new arrivals section and must have the Girls Chino ruffle jacket- in Navy for my daughter- it is SO cute. Just as I saw it I thought - I wish they made it for adults and then read the description:
ReplyDeleteWe love this jacket so much, we wish it came in our size
Found this funny as they certainly could make this in our size but have chosen not to??
At least my daughter will be styling in it:)
I like the stain glass cardi and the Beacon bag collection.
ReplyDeleteAlyssa I echo your thoughts.
J. Crew, how about putting more detailed pictures of the bags? Instead of long descriptions more pictures of the inside and dimension relative to the mannequin would help a lot since most of your customers buy from your website.
Yes, CheesyGoodness, I'd wear the metalic gold Sperry Topsiders. Absolutely. :D
ReplyDeletesilver_lining I am with you on the superfine cotton. Loved those pieces last year and happy to see them back in another color. I also like the long beach cardigan, splatter tee and beaded lace tee.
ReplyDeleteI don't get the appeal of the Blaine jacket styling to look like a jacket under a jacket. The fabric is nice, reminiscent of the textured hemp and birchcloth but why would I want to look like I am wearing two jackets?! What am I missing here..
OT - the Sapphire tweed pencil popped back on sale for $119. Beautiful tweed fabric and classic style. Exceptional deal with 20% off.
Hi there,
ReplyDeleteI hope everyone is enjoying the holidays!
I just perused the new catalog online. It seems like I'm probably going to be alone on this one but...I actually like the sequin shorts. I think they are a great, unique piece for a summer party or fun holiday getaway south!
I also thought the carly dress was lovely, as well as both the rosette and stained glass cardigans.
Wishing all of you a safe and Happy New Year!
Overall, I am not too impressed.
ReplyDeleteAlexis, the chiffon ruffle cardi was part of the "Winter" roll-out. I purchased this and while it looks like a cute cardi, it is super thin, cotton/spandex, snag-worthy fabric with a dry hand. Kind of like they are making jackies now only much thinner. I couldn't believe it was a winter release as it deserves no place in a winter wardrobe and the $88 price is so completely off. It should be no more than $29.99, IMO.
Check that Zoey blazer..looks okay in black but Slate tells a whole nother' story!
Cheesy-LOL on that "suckered" shirt comment...but I think I might be suckered into at least one color this spring;)
I like Ruthie but maybe not the side-zip:(
The brand new Rosette Cardigan makes me scared to think what the boobage would look like...on ANYONE. Bad ruffle placement, me thinks.
Sweeping Ruffles Shirt=Dust Ruffle=so wrong.
I am really turned off by all the crooked necklaces..juxtaposed to have a quirky feel only to fall short and just look like something is wrong with your $100+ necklace.
Totally agree about the handbags. They listened to us when we said please show us the inside of your $300-$400 handbags. But not showing them on a live model feels like you are hiding something, J Crew. Let me tell you, they are hiding the fact that the large Georgie is MASSIVE. Those provided measurements do not tell the whole story. Great travel bag/carry on...everyday wear? You are threatening to take out small children.
I love the name given to one swimsuit, "Fruit Fest"
Can you imagine what happens when you sit in those sequin shorts? **Crunch** Flying Sequins!! Oh no..they are all over Aunt Netsie's cole slaw!! I knew I shouldn't have worn them to the family picnic:)
God bless the girl that can wear the White Denim Toothpick Jeans:)
I should add that I cannot handle slipping around my sandals with sweaty, summer-feet. Sorry but I am honest here..they need to put something called "leather" on the foot bed of their sandals(and ALL shoes!)
ReplyDeleteCan someone tell me what color Dusty Shale is? Is it Grey or Green? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks Heidi, I was hoping that was what it was but I just couldn't tell. I'm thinking on which color for the Suckered Gingham and that's looking like the one since I have so much pink and have the navy check already.
ReplyDeleteSo, after looking at it several times, (and go ahead and make fun!) I think I like the Sweeping Ruffles shirt! Call me a big dust ruffle but I think with a necklace and jeans it could be really cute. But I cannot tell how fitted it is, whether it's like a slim fitting button down that could have a gap, or looser fitting. Has anyone seen it in the stores?
Sweetsy and the sequin shorts, classic! Sorry Auntie! I cannot fathom those shorts and wouldn't you know, they a "Jenna's Pick!"
I saw many of the new items yesterday at my b&m. I tried on and loved the ruthie shell. The side zip didn't pucker, but I didn't (nor would I) tuck it in. (I did not like the evie on me.) I bought the striped popover in deep hydrangea (like FFM), but my ps and the sa's kept calling it a tunic. LOVE the anorak and hope to buy it at some point, but don't understand the pockets at chest level. What were they thinking??? LOVE the ruffled gamine jacket - this is another one that I want to buy at some point. I like the skimmer pant much better than the cafe capris, and I like them. I hope my b&m gets the scalloped petal top, it looks so pretty. I also like the slub cotton ruffle v-neck tee, it comes in a pretty plummy-lilac in store. I will buy this next time I visit my b&m. As for the sequin shorts, I just don't get them. At all.
ReplyDeletesweetsy - You're a hoot. Thanks for the laugh.
ReplyDeleteLol at Sweetsy. :-). The only thing I really like is the Bijoux Pear necklace, but that is a very easy DIY project, plus after the peeling acrylic beads on my Gilded Tulip earrings I'm worried about JC bead quality.
ReplyDeleteOT comment: I'm wearing my silk streamers cami (FP purchase) for the *second* time and the hem is entirely unraveled in the back. Grr.
OT question: anyone know whether the Charlie ruffle pumps are TTS?
I was feelin' frolicky and...feisty, today! Hope everyone knows I am just havin' fun;)
ReplyDeleteI agree with all the comments on the lack of detailed pics of the small bags and clutches. I like the Panier but their evening bags are usually too big for me, so I must see in person (and anyway I will wait for it to go on sale).
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing else that really caught my eye (but I haven't looked at the catalog, only at the new arrivals). However, I'm happy to see that they have listened and gave us (I quote from the description) "What you've been asking for—your favorite vintage slim fit, now in a darker, non-destroyed rustic wash."
It's kind of ironic that they are offering a long-sleeved slub cotton tee now that we are moving towards spring. I am also surprised that they are not offering the 3/4 sleeve scoopneck painter tee that is in stores right now. Maybe they are saving it for the next rollout.
Re. the sequin shorts, I understand the concept (even if I don't like them) but I'm laughing at the style resolution #2 "I swear to wear them now, even in the snow and ice". Come on Jenna!!!
I forgot to mention that I do like the popover shirt, but in the white version that is in stores (the price is $59.50 if I'm not wrong). BTW, it's definitively not a tunic-lenght (like the Oxford tunic of the last summer).
ReplyDeleteThis must be the most boring J.Crew roll out eveh :(
ReplyDeleteI think I am going to dig out my 07 and 08 resort catalogs and see if the style decline is for real or if I am just jcrew-ed out.
The only thing that caught my eye was the gingham shirts. I can't help but suspect they will be totally sheer. Anyone see them in store yet?
Haha Ema, I missed the Style Resolutions! Yes, wear the sequin shorts in the snow and ice. I'm thinking Jenna was drinking at lunch again.
ReplyDeleteHeidi I saw those necklaces and couldn't make them out, good eye! At first glance I was sort of hoping one of them had a stone like the Ribbon one but without the ribbons. And it looks sort of like there is a bib necklace underneath all of them.
Has anyone seen if the two muslin scarves are a pretty white muslin or a dirty tan pretending to be white? I've been fooled before :)
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteShannon I do love the old J. Crew but if you look at your previous Resort catalogs, January has always been light. I think they could get away with more Resort in spite of inventories because even those who don't "winter in Hawaii" are eager to look forward to Spring fashions but you'll see every January is pretty thin. It doesn't get weighty until March.
ReplyDeleteITA on the potential sheerness of the gingham shirts. I too fear the sheer but the check shirts weren't so I'm hoping!
Heidi you totally called it, that looks like the Supernova in black. I need to search for the Jenna clip with Martha Stewart, never saw it.
ReplyDeleteLaura- The size of the collection doesn't bother me as much as the recycled style. More bland colors and that same old ruffle and rosette. I was craving a little shot of spring freshness! But this is just so bland.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure your right though, that Resort is usually half-hearted
Hmm...I'm hanging on to my gift cards for now. Nothing really jumping out at me.
ReplyDeletesweetsy. your post made me laugh out loud. at work. thanks for the laugh.
ReplyDeleteshould i go up a size in the toothpick ankle cords? i'm a size 4 in the city fit pants but i'm not sure if i should order a 28 or a 29 in the toothpick...ordering a size up would allow for tailoring if needed so i'm tempted to do that but any advice is greatly appreciated...
ReplyDeletei'm 5'8" 145-150 lbs
Jammy:
ReplyDeleteMy philosophy is it is always better to "take in" than "squeeze in."
Plus those darn toothpicks. I wear a 30 in the black resin denim toothpicks but a 32 in the cords. It isn't like my body grew or shrunk over a two minute time period. Wonky sizing, imo. Good luck!
Jammy, IME the denim and cords sized 25, 26, etc are more TTS than those sized 0, 2, etc, which seem to be subject to vanity sizing. For example I am a 2 in JC chinos and suiting pants but I wear a 28 in toothpicks and matchsticks. JMO.
ReplyDeleteJammy, I take a 4 or 6 in JC pants (4 in bootcut cords, 6 in the studio trousers) and the matchsticks in 28 fit me well. I tried the 29s, but they were too big in the waist and no wider in the knee/calf. They also stretch out somewhat.
ReplyDeleteJenn,
ReplyDeleteThe carly dress was available at my B&M. I noticed the same thing about it not being on the website..although there is a pic of it on the opening page of all of the dresses. You can't click on it though.. Anyway, I love it. It came in a slate and light lilac color, but was rather short for my 5'9" height. I bought it anyway. :) I think it was $98? Hope that helps!
one poster mentioned the gold topsiders they are really nice and are now in my cart, could be very versatile spring summer.
ReplyDeletebut lots of blah colors, and lets see something else besides the ruffles.
Fyi, the gold sperrys are slightly cheaper at Nordstrom (about $10 less). I have also seen them at Macy's for less.
ReplyDeleteBlast, the sapphire skirt is already gone...I have such a weakness for tweed. ... As for new arrivals, it does seem like Jenna has reached her limits of creativity - just more of the same. Regarding the anorak, it may be archaic, but to me anoraks are pull-over style, not open all the way down the front.
ReplyDeleteIs this catalogue available in stores now?
Not a fan of the loofah.
ReplyDeleteHi All,
ReplyDeleteI am new to the blog and was hoping you could help me with a couple questions... I saw a tan (light khaki) short jacket online in the spring looks section, but can't find an SA that knows what I'm talking about. It is paired with a zebra t-shirt and jeans, and has a ruffle on the collar. Has anyone seen this? Does it come in petite? I am also still dying for the shimmer cardigan from holiday that I couldn't find IRL anywhere!!! Did it really exist?? My local store said they got 2 and the SAs nabbed them!!
TIA!!!
I like the white toothpick jeans as well as the dotted jacquard pencil skirt and crosshatch metro dress. Curious about sizing if anyone has a chance to try them on.
ReplyDeleteVintage latticework popover and soleil paisley silk tunic are beautiful - too bad I can't wear yellow. :(
I have the scallop underwire bikini in my cart already. Will definitely pick that up for my upcoming vacation. A friend is having a very casual beach wedding and everyone is expected to plunge into the ocean after the vows. Maybe the sequin chino shorts would be good for that occasion. Otherwise, I can't see myself wearing them anywhere I would wear shorts and they wouldn't cut it for more formal dress IMO.
Not sure if it is a new arrival but what about the encrusted highland tartan tunic #21807 ?? Is it just me or does the model look like she is wearing a pincushion?
cstar, is this the jacket you seek?

If so, there is one on ebay in size 0.

Enjoying all of the comments on the latest rollout. I am disappointed by the bland palette, but I managed to find a few items that I might like to try:
ReplyDelete* Long Beach Cardigan in Navy - I am totally loving long cardigans right now, and I like the relaxed vibe of this one. Always been a fan of cotton/linen cardigans, too!
* Textured jersey floral splatter tee -- a fun layering tee.
* Suckered gingham perfect shirt -- I have been suckered by this shirt. LOL! I think it's cute in the wild blackberry color.
* Skimmer pant -- very stylish, esp. in Irish Moss.
On the fence about:
* Stained Glass Cardigan -- at first glance, I loved this one, but I worry that it's a "one season only" piece as the dramatic design will look dated far too soon. I am trying very hard to avoid sweaters that do not have classic lines and color schemes.
Just got a chance to look at the new arrivals: when I saw the stained glass cardigan: The Partridge Family bus image just popped into my mind! Pass please.
ReplyDeleteSome pretty items but don't see any must haves or the items I did really like come in colors I already own enough of from JCrew.
Resort is always a small rollout but nice to look at new things.
I'm not overly enthused about the new rollout, but will wait to render a final opinion on things when I (finally) get my catalog. Two things: (1) I hope Jenna does let any children sit in her lap while wearing those sequined shorts or she may be turned over to Social Services, and (2) Sweetsy- please describe pros and cons of the Zoe blazer, black vs gray. You mentioned in your earlier post the gray "was a whole 'nother story". Much obliged.
ReplyDeleteI like the skimmer pant, and think it'll probably be a big seller, but everything else is kinda blah. And I wish they'd design a few smaller dangly earrings that don't pull my ears down quite so much.
ReplyDeleteOoops! Meant to say Jenna does not...
ReplyDeleteI don't see much of anything new for the guys. I'm a Jack Purcell man - I'll pass on all the new Sperry's.
ReplyDeleteThe men's section in the catalog is pretty much business as usual. That beige backdrop they're using isn't really doing the clothing any favors. J. Crew always does better when they have a theme. I guess Resort season is too small to warrant a new photo shoot for guys.
In the women's section, it seems like they toned down the crazy layering of the Holiday season. 2 layers seems to be the limit. I would agree that lot of the clothing seems to fall in the soft pastel/neutral family but the stylists have also shown how you can punch it up with brighter colors.
Page 13 is great example. That colored block the shoes are attached too has splashes of turquoise, yellow, olive, and the flower is a deep aubergine.
Page 21. Again, the flower works perfectly with the pristine white coat and pale yellow background.
Page 26. The bag is an icy blue with dark brown leather handles. You got violet, orange, warm pinks, and greens complementing it.
David, I don't know for sure but I would guess that sweetsy was comparing the two colors of Zoey blazer based on the website photos. The dark one on the model looks fine. The grey one on the mannequin is all frumpy and hangs like a sack. Even the arms are weird.
ReplyDeleteShuLvr-
ReplyDeleteyou nailed it and cracked me up doing so! The grey looks like the poorest workmanship with a fabric that should never have attempted to be worked into a blazer. Black just doesn't show those faults as much.
QNQS-
ReplyDeleteI love how you look through the womens with such finite detail. It's refreshing to hear and fun to look at the things you notice. I completely agree that they toned down the layers which is such a breath of fresh air..like literally..the models can breathe.
QN, QS: You've pegged what I love best about each new catalog--the color palette suggestions! Sure the clothes have tipped more toward an overall neutral palette this season, but JC still has spiced it up with some gorgeous purple through pink tones and some icy blues/acidy greens.
ReplyDeleteQuiet Nights, Quiet Stars it's interesting that you didn't think there was that much new for the guys. I was thinking the guys section looks great - I was even finding clever things they did for the guys online like the Men's Shop at the Liquor Store. Has that been around? I noticed they are even featuring Bass Weejuns which I happen to love and they have a model, either new or I hadn't seen him before, on page 73. I am just liking the whole vibe of the men's section lately.
ReplyDeleteSomeone mentioned wishing they had some nautical inspired items. I agree!
The Lolly mini clutch is so tempting, it's too darn cute! I'm interested in the skimmer pants, popover shirts, and the driving mocs. A bit disappointed that the skirts are all too short!
ReplyDeleteWell I got excited when I saw that the new purple gingham shirt was labeled "also available in tall", but when I clicked on it, only the blue version was available in tall.
ReplyDeleteAs usual, I love most of the men's sneakers, too bad I don't need any more. Some of them don't come in 13 any way.
So I was really excited in seeing the Sperry boat shoes, but I figured I could probablly find something similar for less somewhere else, and I did! Right on the main Sperry Topsider site, its called the Women's Authentic Original Metallic Wedge! I think the wedge is even cuter than what's on the J Crew site. And the best part is both the gold and silver are on clearance for 30$, in every size.
ReplyDeleteI just ordered me a pair in the silver! Score!
has anyone seen the pippa flats in a 7.5 in any of their stores? any color.
ReplyDeleteOT - posted in another thread. Would you JCAs be able to tell me which local B&M was it that you saw the perfect pencils and wool ribbon ravine dress on sale and how much? I need that to be able to get a price adjustment for the online price. TIA!
ReplyDeleteIt's annoying that J Crew practices discriminting pricing like this.. I've never seen any other retailer do that!
@Sweetsy: I work as a graphic designer for a toy store. I love color and I'm always consistently impressed by the job that JC does in selecting cohesive color palettes.
ReplyDelete@Meme: I wouldn't be surprised if this was the basic color palette for all of Spring. It's got a lot of the traditional Easter-esque colors but with the usual JC flair.
@Laura: Oh, don't get me wrong - I have no complaints when it comes to the overall direction of JC's menswear. I'm much more of a F/W guy and I tend to focus on shirts/sweaters/outerwear/ties. Right now, there's not much being added to any of those categories for Resort. My only message to JC menswear is DO NOT GET CONSERVATIVE. I can get boring basics at other retailers but JC always has the great vintage-inspired stuff like the red racer jacket and the upcoming red chambray shirt and green/white/black plaid shirt
Hit my local B&M tonight. At first glance, there were no "must haves" on the website. I ended up getting the Bijoux pear necklace, the Shipley sweater (in store only I think, it's a chunky knit sweater w/ hidden buttons), the much debated stained glass cardi (snagged the LAST one in the store). The stained glass cardi runs TTS and much nicer IRL than on the site. The colors are brighter in person, IMO. Also picked up a few sale pieces for good prices w/ the extra 20% off. There will be additional new pieces hitting the store by the end of January. Probably won't go back until then.
ReplyDeleteI was at my local as well.
ReplyDeleteI must have found the pipe they store in the back, put some special stuff in it, smoked it, because SURPRISE, surprise, I fell in love with the ruffled Carly dress (they had it in charcoal). It felt good on, had a nice shape, and the ruffles didn't seem overwhelming.
It has ZERO hanger appeal and definitely needed to be steamed, but I brought it home.
I also got the new roses tee, like the material this is made of more than the one from last year.
Left the stained glass behind, and may regret it. It sounds like it has a lot of admirers and that could mean it will never make it to super-sale. Sigh!
Have a nice night, all!
Alexis - I have an idea for a post (mainly b/c I'm so clueless!) - sweater care tips/ideas (for merino, cashmere, dream, cotton, etc.) and suggestions on best way to shave off pilling stubs, etc.
ReplyDeleteTrying to start off the new year right ... by finally taking my hanging sweaters off the hangers and folding/storing them properly, but I'm not sure which ones really should be folded, which are ok to hang, etc.
I know there are mainly JCAs out there who know the "sweater rules" and I'd love to hear them! :)
For those who've seen the stained glass IRL: is the dark color charcoal or black?
ReplyDeleteHi Dindin, I got my Pippa flats from the Collection store @ Madison Avenue this afternoon. I say give them a call... you might be lucky to snag that for $49.99 before the 20% discount!
ReplyDeleteEw, the Always cardigan increased in price from $29.50 to $39.50!
ReplyDeleteThe Always cardigan is nice, I have it,but it is not worth the $39.50 imo, it is loungewear.
ReplyDeleteSilver Lining, can you tell me about the superfine cotton suiting? I didn't buy any of those pieces last year and I'm tempted this year. My concern with cotton particularly in a skirt, is that I will look wrinkled and rumpled by the time I drive to the office! How is this cotton for holding shape and resisting wrinkles?
ReplyDeletetop siders $85 at sperry and nordies for those who are interested, pretty sneaky JC
ReplyDeleteWOW the Crystal Lattice and Pyramid necklaces are awfully similar to Libretto and Crystal Symphony but 3X the price! WTH?
ReplyDeleteI have always wondered why JC doesn't ever do ANY jewelry in silver. Does anybody know or have thoughts? Seems like they could actually use real STERLING at these price points, and some of us w cooler complexions just look better in silver jewelry. Seriously we can buy Tiffany for $300 ....
Hexicon-
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely dark charcoal in the sweater.
There are some store only (so far) double breasted type cashmere cardis which - hilariously - have holes already built in! Some people may like them, but they have sort a crochet 'holey' pattern along the bottom above the band that is at the hip - that is where they crossover and button (4 buttons). I am not liking the built in holes myself. They come in about 6 colors....Perhaps this is a new approach to the defective items problems:) Being serious though, it was a pity as the color and overall design was quite pretty...
ReplyDeleteRuffles - I expect J.Crew doesn't do silver jewelery because they would have to charge an arm and a leg based on their current margins on jewelery. If they are charging $300 for a necklace made with no precious metal and glass stones then what would they charge for the real thing? Especially since a lot of their jewelery is very heavy. The cost of silver would add up pretty fast.
ReplyDeleteI doubt they could compete with Tiffany, who has some reasonable prices for beautiful silver pieces. I love Elsa Peretti, Paloma Picasso and Frank Ghery silver pieces and for gold, Jean Schlumberger is to die for!
Can anyone comment on the fit of Pippa flats and Rebekah perforated maryjanes? Do these run TTS?
ReplyDeleteFor the Lulu metallic flats I had to go up half size.
I'm normally a 7 but depending on the width I go up half size. Thank you!
ShuLvr:
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you on Tiffany silver pieces and price point. I'd rather spend my $$ on real stuff than on costume jewelry that may tarnish in few years at the most.
Tiffany pieces are timeless and classic where $300 costume jewelry may not hold up to time. Just my 2c. :-)
jcmama, the Pippa flats and Rebekah perforated maryjanes are TTS. The Pippa flats width isn't narrow. I got the Jewel box suede flats and the width at the front is a little tight in size 6 1/2 for me but size 7 is too loose. The Pippa flats in size 6 1/2 is just perfect! I got the Rebekah maryjanes in faded orchid and it's lovely! Run TTS as well... it's not as narrow at the front like the Charlie ruffled maryjanes is.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jean! I might get the Rebekah maryjane. Would the faded orchid be okay with black tights?
ReplyDeleteRuffles I have looked at that Crystal Lattice necklace for a couple of months and thought it was beautiful. But I think it's a $150. necklace and JC thinks it's a $325. necklace. Oh well! I do have the Libretto in crystal and the pink/butterscotch. Love them and think they are a great value so far.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to imagine a double breasted cashmere sweater and it does not compute. How is that flattering? I will finally be able to go to the store this weekend so I can see myself! I remember the Bling cardigan in the store and thought the quality was really not good.
Honestly I don't remember ever returning so much to J. Crew for quality issues in over six years of heavy buying. For me it has not been just things like brand new coats with torn open pockets, it's also been fabrics that felt very subpar. I really really hope this is a blip this winter for my loved J. Crew.
In response to Laura's comment, I've purchased several of the bling cardis because I love the way they fit and how they match all my JC skirts (and the price at the moment), but you're 100% right, the quality is shoddy. I've worn a couple of them maybe 2-3 times and already there's a pilling disaster going on with the sleeves - and my lint shaver that works oh-so-well on my JC cashmere isn't doing a thing to help! I'm hoping after the initial pilling they will stop... but much as I love these cardis, I would not recommend them. I had a feeling from the original price point of $68 that they were going to be another "dream" / nightmare.
ReplyDeleteIt's really such a shame - I'm realizing more and more that what I'm buying from J.Crew is turning into a wardrobe of disposable clothing. If I wanted a sweater I was going to get 5 wearings out of before tossing in the trash, I would shop at WalMart and save myself a fortune! And yet JC entices me time and time again with their cute styles and color choices...
Stopped by j.crew today to do a return & ended up buying two pairs of jeans bec. super-nice SA called & got the sale price for me ($29 in stores vs. $98 still online - ridiculous that there's such a disparity) plus 20% off. I did have to pay shipping, but it was only $8. I also got the January catalogue :-) Nice to have such a pleasant experience - and with that, Happy New Year to all :-)
ReplyDeleteFor anyone interested in the Blush Pink Oxfords, I emailed them today just to see: Here is their response:
ReplyDeleteWe are happy to let you know that our Camden Leather Brogues, item 23936 in blush pink, will be available in February 2010.
They will be $250 and we are taking orders for them now so that they ship as soon as they arrive in stock.

stopped by B&M today and tried the skimmer pant. Very cute pant, but ended up getting the Minnie anyways cause I judt liked the a little bet better. I advise to size down in the skimmer pants, as I normally take 26 or size 2, and found myself fitting into the size 0 easily...
ReplyDeleteShuLvr and Ruffle,
ReplyDeleteI own sterling silver pieces that JCrew did one summer. They are beautiful. Wish they still made them as I do not buy their costume stuff. Not worth the price and even on sale quality is so ify.
Went to B&M and fell in LOVE with the gray classic leather ballet flats yesterday. They only had one pair in my size which were scuffed badly and refused to give discount, so I orderd a pair from the red phone. Can't wait for their arrival! Am in love with their skimmer pant in black (perfect for dressing up and down)and beacon purse too, but will wait until I can test them out in the store first before purchasing.
ReplyDeleteH, I'm checking out the Beacon purse, too. I'm miffed though, because I like the shape and size, and the studded strap, but that only comes on the metallic. I wish it was the other way around, since I think the nubuck body could use the extra pep of the fancier strap, and the metallic body shines on its own. NOT THAT I NEED ANOTHER PURSE or anything, but just for browsing sakes....
ReplyDeletejcmama, yes I think the faded orchid rebekah goes well with black or gray color tights...
ReplyDeleteI think I am the only one who's just not feeling anything at all from the new catalog. Which is perfectly fine by me, as I already have more clothes than I can reasonably wear! :-)
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year everybody!
ReplyDeleteI made a quick trip to the Madison Avenue Collection store yesterday and saw the (in)famous sequin shorts. They are cure (not $195 cute but cute) and I think that Aunt Netsie's coleshaw is safe, they are not stiff at all and I don't think they crunch when you sit in them (I haven't tried them though). The main thing that I dislike is the color, it's a little bit washed out.
Laura, I tried the double-breasted cashmere sweater, it's very feminine but comes with a $170 price tag. I took some pics and probably will put them up on my blog today or tomorrow if anyone is interested.
Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteLOL, Ema..thanks for clarifying that about the shorts:) Good to know people will not have to shield their eyes when around the sequin shorts;)
Has anyone seen Straw seaside tote IRL? I'm wondering about quality and size. TIA
