Forget Cyber Monday, now it's Cyber Week: E-tailers are expected to offer discounts all week long as customers flock to the Web to shop in greater numbers.Like many of you, I was not "blown-away" with J.Crew's Cyber Monday promotion of 20% off select sweaters and a code for free shipping on $150+. I thought the 20% off Holiday Sale offer that ended this last Sunday was more enticing. However, J.Crew is one of the few retailers performing {very} well. So I can't begrudge them too much. Instead, I tip my head in acknowledgment of smart management. :)

The keyboard tapping and mouse clicks heard in offices today might be the sounds of online shopping. On Cyber Monday, traditionally the Monday after Thanksgiving, consumers utilize strong workplace Internet connections to shop online. This Monday, more than 96.5 million shoppers are expected to make a purchase, up nearly 14% from last year, according to Shop.org.
“A lot more retailers are offering more aggressive promotions,” said Larry Joseloff, vice president of content at Shop.org. The organization is predicting 87% of retailers will offer Cyber Monday promotions, versus 83% last year. “One trend we're seeing is retailers lifting restrictions for free shipping [like threshold amounts of spending],” added Mr. Joseloff.
Retailers such as Gap, Barnes & Noble, Bloomingdale's and J.C. Penney are all offering Cyber Monday promotions, ranging from 30% discounts to $50 off some purchases. Some retail experts predict the promotions will continue for the rest of the week.
“It's definitely ‘Cyber Week,'” said Sucharita Mulpuru, a retail analyst at Forrester Research. “Now is a good time to go online and get what you need by the holidays.”
With Black Friday treating online retailers well, some are predicting strong sales to continue. In the New York area, eBay had nearly 19,000 buyers and over 15,800 sellers, and predicts stronger results following Cyber Monday. Additionally, consumers spent $595 million online on Friday, an 11% jump over last year, according to tracking firm ComScore.
Even so, questions remain as to whether retailers are prepared for the influx of online shoppers this year. Last year, technical snafus knocked out e-commerce sites for stores such as J.Crew and Bloomingdale's for hours during Cyber Monday as traffic surged.
This year, Web pages at retailers including Barnes & Noble, Toys R Us, Saks and Kohl's are taking over 2.5 seconds to download, according to mobile tracker Gomez. Ms. Mulpuru says even 2 seconds is considered slow for page downloads in the industry. Gomez listed J.Crew's response time for page downloads as a fast 0.799 seconds this year.
Some retailers have signed on for additional Web support. GSI Commerce, which provides e-commerce and marketing services to retailers and also recently purchased members-only shopping site Rue La La, has seen a spike in retail customers, eager to expand their online strategies. GSI currently serves 500 retailers and brands, double its number of customers this time last year, according to executive vice president of strategy Fiona Dias.
“In the last year, we've greatly expanded our service offerings,” Ms. Dias said.
Lastly, remember those days last year when JCAs (including me!) weren't sure if J.Crew's website would have that dreaded "be back soon..." sign? It's nice to see the website fully functioning again. I have even gotten use to the new search features, including the additional sale categories (from "tops" to "sweaters", "knits & tees", etc.).
What are your thoughts on the article? Thoughts on J.Crew's website (now that it is finally recovered, from the upgrade of last summer)?
It's great to have the old J Crew website back, I wholly agree with that. What happened last year should have...well, NEVER happened, you know?
ReplyDeleteGreat article, and I definitely have seen so many more retailers offer bigger (and better!) promos for Cyber Monday. It's really growing, and I think every year it'll hopefully continue. It's a great concept, if you think about it, and I always participate because I love to do holiday shopping online. It makes things so easy and stress free, especially with so many of the retailers offering (at least!) free shipping. Yup, love it.
Thanks for posting this, lovely!

I still remember the long hours on the phone with CS over my 4 messed up orders, and credit card charges, it was such a hassle. Great sale but it was not worth it in the end.
ReplyDeleteJ Crew could have step it up this season and offered better sales imo.

ReplyDeleteI must be more forgiving than I thought, because until you posted this article, I had completely forgotten about those Be back soon .... messages! LOL. Hope we have seen the last of those!
ReplyDeleteI got some fantastic deals on oldnavy.com on Black Friday - $5 performance fleece separates for the family, etc., and was hoping JC would do 20% off FS + free ship w/no minimum, but no such luck.
OT, but I did get a great deal on a Tramontina cast iron pot on WalMart.com on Thanksgiving Day. I did site to store for free shipping and the pot was $35. In a test done by America's Test Kitchen, the Tramontina pot performed every bit as well as a similar one from Le Creuset at about 1/10 the price of a Le Creuset. WIN!
On the downside, I've tried about 8x unsuccessfully now to order pajamas from Victoria's Secret and frankly I'm really pissed off at their site. On Thanksgiving I repeatedly tried placing an order in the evening to get a free pair of slippers + 20% off + free shipping w/no minimum and their site couldn't process the order. So that made me MAD. I tried again on Black Friday and I couldn't get the PJGIFT code to work. I just tried AGAIN to process the 20% off + free slippers + random code they sent me in the mail w/mystery value (turned out to be $10) and STILL the site is not taking the 20% off OR reflecting that the slippers are free. No way am I clicking 'purchase' if the screen isn't showing me those discounts. and of course the B&M store is not doing either promo.
GARRRRRRRRRR. Trying to spend money but can't! ARGH. Poo on you, VS.
I do 90% of my shopping on-line, so I love how smoothly the JCrew website has been running lately. But I'm still disappointed in their Cyber Monday promo. Like you, I acknowledge that they're performing well, and when a store is performing well, they're under no obligation to offer fabulous deals. But a 24 hour 30% off everything promo would have encouraged me to spend in a way these smaller, narrower promos do not.
ReplyDeletePerhaps I've been home with sick children for too long, but that model looks like she is reeling from a stomach bug. Look at the expression on her face, and the way she is hunched back on that stool -- poor thing!
