J.Crew Email: A sneak peek. Just for cardmembers.

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Rosa, Marietta, HeidiG, Dina, AnneG, as well as Professor (in this post), who shared with us the latest email from J.Crew to its card members.

The email above features the not-yet-officially-released-online Starla Satin Pumps (Item 20281; $198.00). J.Crew describes the necklace as:
Add some sparkle to the season—a heel encrusted with crushed metallic glitter makes this satin pump party perfect (and everyday extra-special). They're great with skinny jeans and genious with dresses and skirts. Silk satin upper. Man-made lining and sole. 3 1/4" poly-covered heel. Made in Italy. Catalog/jcrew.com only.
The pair in black looks gorgeous and super fun for a party (like on New Year's Eve). In addition to ruffles, I am a sucker for glitter and sparkles! And those heels have just the right amount for me. :)

What are your thoughts on the Starla Satin Pumps? Do you like the style of the shoes– from the glitter heels to the satin body?

  1. Super cute! I have enough evening shoes, but these are lovely.

  2. I don't like satin shoes, and these are so clunky... I'd rather have something more elegant for evening wear. This style works well in the Juliets, for example, with the wood heel. Not so much with the glitter heel. But I love the idea of a glitter heel!

  3. I love the idea of it on super-sale. ;)

  4. Dina... I have to agree with you. Like... $39.99. Then mayyyyybe I'll go for it. Then I could wear with jeans, etc... and not really care about wearing silk satin shoes around since they didn't cost $198!

  5. Like the glitter heel, but the whole thing comes perilously close to something I'd find in the juniors shoe section of Macy's. I'm with Em and dinagideon. $200 for satin is a little on the laughable side of things. You'd have to count on no precipitation whatsoever this winter to be able to comfortably wear these shoes outside without fear of ruining them once you leave the house.

  6. I love those! But like everyone else, I'm choking on the price.

  7. Absolutely! I also am set for evening shoes, but if I was looking to buy, I'd go for it.

  8. Too clunky a heel for evening wear and satin rules out day wear ... I foresee these dropping in prices rather rapidly.

  10. What's up with spelling 'genius' as 'genious' in the item description. Good job, J. Crew! Who's writing this stuff?

  11. I don't wear high heels mainly b/c I cannot with back pain but if I could I would love to wear these (if they were on super sale:)

  12. I love sparkles, but do not love Satin. I agree with Em and also prefer more elegant shoes for evening wear. These seem very clunky

  13. Hmm, I don't know. I kind of like them but definitely am not paying $198.

Might be stating the obvious here, but the glitter heel would so easy to DIY. Something to protect the rest of the shoe, spray adhesive and lots of glitter and voila! custom Starlas :)

  14. I really like them and they would be fine for the holidays here in Floridaland as I don't have to worry about snow.

However, once again AT wins out with their lovely Miranda shoe. The sweet kitten heel and blingy toe decoration are fab. And purchased at $165 less 40%, they were easier on the wallet.

  15. These are pretty but not my style. I prefer strappy shoes with skinny, high heels for evening wear. The glitter heel is cute though.

OT - the Sapphire tweed pencil skirt is gone from the website. I got this a few days ago and had to SU as my usual size was sold out when I ordered. I was contemplating returning it and hoping for a size smaller as it really is too big but now they are all gone so maybe I will have to have it tailored. Such a lovely tweed, I hate to let it go.

  16. OT: If anyone is interested I spotted an ocelot cardi in xs ($59.99) at the SouthPoint (Durham, NC) J.Crew - (919) 806-1449.

Would love to find the blk/wh print of the silk tiered cami in a 6!

  17. Just popped into j.crew & picked up the brown puffer vest that's on sale because I love the aesthetic of a puffer vest over a sweater & pencil skirt. SA even noted to me that it's $70 in stores and still full price on line - can't stand this practice by j.crew.

Picked up the crewcuts catalogue and heavens is it adorable. Much more of the way the adult j.crew cats. used to be, with smiling, happy models frolicking in the snow ...

  18. Le Belle Helene - that practice isn't really that abnormal - Gap/ON/BR are terrible with online vs. in-store pricing, especially when it comes to sale items. I can't tell you how many times I'll see something online on sale, and it's at LEAST 50% cheaper in store, plus no shipping. At least J.Crew does price matching - I've never been able to get Gap to price match between online and stores.

  19. la belle, great color choice. i just ordered the plum vest, but i love my brown one from last year. it's also very cute with almost any color long sleeve tee underneath.

  20. In my experience it is *not* easy to get catalog/online to match a B&M sale price--I've been told by CS that I must call *from* the store in order to do so, which is just silly, because if I could get to the store on the first place I'd simply buy the item there. Very frustrating for me as an online customer.

  21. I think the shoes are adorable, but like many here I don't find them $198 adorable. I don't go out enough in the evening to get that much wear out of evening shoes.

La Belle Helene, add Anthropologie to the list of stores with prices that are different online and in store. Just discovered this yesterday and the difference was huge.

On a totally unrelated topic, does anyone know if Patina stopped blogging? I checked every day and the other day the link stopped working. Hope she's okay.

  22. I like the idea of the shoes, but no the satin. Maybe with patent? The weather can change on the dime here in SC, so I'd have to carry a back-up pair with me for fear of ruining them.

Desert Flower - I miss Patina, too. I hope everything is okay.

  23. i third the patina concerns!

as for the shoes, eh...i'm not feeling these. i love me a little bling, but the glitter somehow seems cheap. perhaps a crystal studded heel would work better?

desert flower--you hit the nail on the head w/the anthro price discrepancies! the site was partially updated today to reflect some store prices but not all--i was there this morning and picked up a slew of stuff that is still $20-$50 higher online! for you nyc-ers, the soho shop was fairly well stocked as of this AM...

  24. math teacher - i like your idea, maybe patent would be better than satin. i agree with all, that satin in the winter is not a good combo.

i'm a quiet reader of many of these blogs, but enjoy them everyday, and i too noticed patina was gone and was bummed. hope she is ok!

  25. Alexis I LOOOOOOVE the new photo up top!

Okay, OT but the navy check shirt went UP in price. When does that happen? So do we have to pay extra to NOT have ruffles?

  26. Good evening Ladies!

Laura: Thanks! I love the photo (and the clothes they are wearing.) :)

Incidentally, I too noticed Patina's site was down. I hope she is okay. :)

  27. These shoes are more my mom's style than mine. Maybe it's part of that "something for every age group" marketing plan. Not saying they aren't pretty because they are, just not for me.

Baybaybay - I have the sapphire tweed pencil skirt and love it. If you can get it tailored to your size then I would say keep it. It's very classy and I get a ton of compliments on the beautiful tweed fabric. Glad I didn't miss out on this one but I am a sucker for the J.Crew pencils. If you really don't want to keep it then maybe you could offer it on the JCA Weekly Exchange. Since it is sold out there may be a fellow JCA that is looking to find it. Just a suggestion.

Hey Patina Cabachon, where are you?

  28. UUUUGGGGGHHHHH! I pre-ordered that sequined jacket from the Collection preview a few weeks ago. Not coming. Not enough made to satisfy pre-orders. J. Crew, I wanted to drop $500 with you and YOU WILL NOT LET ME. OK rant over, just needed to share with other JCA's

  29. Sorry - Forgot to say that I LOVE this kind of heel for evening. So much easier to stand in for a long time at a cocktail party. However the satin is a deal breaker for me. Just received my Luciana pumps today. So excited. Luciana - black sheath and a million pearls. I see a dinner date in my future.

  30. Casey, thanks - I've already visually paired the brown vest up with a number of my pencil skirts....loved that spiced wine color, too - I remember it well from the fabulous 2007 fall offerings.

I'm sure j.crew isn't the only one with store and web prices that do not always align, I just know from this blog how often it happens with jcrew, and the headaches, like Hexicon mentioned, people have getting the best price.

  31. Hi Everyone! I made it to my B&M to see the new arrivals today. The store didn't get the Snowflake tee that Tres Tippy showed on her blog, unfortunately. I did see the antler and marrakesh tees but didn't get either one. However, I did get the new rose tee that Ema showed on her blog. It looks cute with the Broken In boyfriend chinos in the nickel color, black cardigan, and black belt. The chinos were on sale for $19.99, too. I tried on the Tori cardigan in black and another cardigan that reminded me of a tuxedo jacket but didn't get either one. The Watercolor Leopard cardigan is pretty IRL and seems to fit like the Strada and Dapple Dot cardigans...I got it in an XSmall. I also picked up the *Moon Asymmetrical Zip Cardi* that is in store only right now. They were all sold out when I left the store except for one size Small, so they appear to be going quickly. The sale section had the usual suspects along with a few scarves, belts, cords, long sleeve swirling flowers tees, and vintage slim jeans, which were @29.99.

Alexis: I love your new blog header! :)

As for the shoes: I think they are very cute...I love chunky heels AND glitter. :)

  35. I love your new header! The Scotland catalog was my very favorite. I do not buy satin shoes, so will stay away from these.

  36. Patina fans -- I miss her blog, too. However, we've been in touch & she is well and very busy. Hopefully she doesn't mind me saying that. I know how it is to wonder what happened to bloggie pals that seem to disappear.

  37. Chunky glitter heels.... reminds me of the Rockettes, no? Pass for me.

  38. Maybe those shoes went, "clunk," but the Madewell patent leather oxfords were apparently as much a hit with others as they were with me! They're almost gone. Only a 7.5 is left. I just got mine and love them. I asked my boyfriend if they were too butch, and he said, "you'd have to be a VERY secure male to wear those!"

They don't run as small as 2008-09 J. Crew shoes. I bought a 7, and they were a tiny bit long, but I think a smaller size would have been tight. They weren't stiff at all. I wore them with socks -- no foot troubles.

  39. Speaking of DIY possibilities here - for my senior prom (circa 1995) I made my own ruby slippers. Just got standard fabric pumps that fit comfortably (I think from someplace like Payless), alternated layers of spray glue (less stiffening) and fine red glitter, then hand-glued sequins around the shoe face and down the seam of the back. Total cost was about $30. They were fantastic. Took care of my glitter shoe fix for life.

If I ever spent $198 on pair of shoes, it'd be for a pair of real shoes from someone who's in the business of making shoes out of high quality materials. I remember the days when JC prices were higher than other competitors but their styles and quality were covetable - but with this declining quality (and practicality) trend I find many of the prices on these kinds of impulsive items a little insulting.

  40. I think if these were patent leather, maybe suede, it would help considerably. Satin in this style of shoe is kinda frumpy, IMO. Plus, that glitter will probably start flaking the minute you put them on.

  41. GigiOfCa: Thanks for letting us know that Patina is doing well. :)

Kathy: I love the Scotland catalog too. It featured some great jackets! :)

FFM: Thanks! I like the new header too. Get's me in the mood for Fall and the Holidays. :)
