J.Crew Email: Our giftable, collectible art tees...plus FREE SHIPIPNG

"Thanks!" to Marietta who shared with us the following. J.Crew is showcasing their tees (click here to shop online) with the phrase "tees with all the trimmings... an artful gift ...in supersoft cotton". The email features the Beaded Marrakesh Tissue Tee (Item 20488; $39.50).

There has been a lot of discussion about whether the quality of J.Crew's tees are worth the retail price. Several JCAs have mentioned receiving defective tees or tees that develop holes after minimal wear. What's up quality control? On a bright note, J.Crew should take back any item that is defective (even if it's from "final sale").

As for my personal experience with J.Crew's tees (and this is just my opinion)... (1) they have some of the best designs & fit and (2) definitely not worth the full price tag. Often times, I do find that the tees are super thin making them vulnerable to damage. However, usually I buy them at a low price which makes it worth it for me. :)

J.Crew is also offering free shipping on orders of $150+ with promo code FS150. This offer expires 11/24/09.

What are your thoughts on J.Crew's tees? Are there any new tee arrivals that you are interested in? Do you think the quality and designs are worth it? :)

  1. I have five tees, all purchases on sale and all--so far, at least--in decent shape (no rips or holes). They're cute and fun and very versatile, but I'd never pay full price for them.

One thing that I don't like is that I can almost always see my bra when I wear these ultra-thin shirts. That bugs me. I wish they'd make them a little thicker, at least in the bust area.

  2. I'm a J.Crewholic newbie having just recently discovered their wonderful embellished tees. I ordered several of them for me and my daughter during the recent sale. Although I haven't put them to the test as far as wear and tear is concerned, I like their fit better than Ann Taylor Loft tees. The latter tend to "flop" out at the neckline maybe because they are cut wider around that area. My only complaint is the length. Being a petite most of the tees tend to be too long for me. I've had one altered but the additional cost of alteration just takes away the savings from the sale so i don't think I'll do that again. Will just resort to folding or rearranging around the hem. Also, I think the J. Crew tees look so great paired with their cardigans, especially of contrasting color. Now just waiting for the cardis to go on sale.

  3. Oh, I forgot to add. I don't know why but their embellished tees tend to flatter my shape. I'm not really endowed at the chest and somehow their designs make me look a little bit fuller around that area.

  4. I can't resist! I'd sworn off JC tees, but I recently bought the slub cotton floral tee in the blush and dark grey. My new rules are no sequins, beads and super thin fabric. The slub cotton florals have a more substantial cloth and I will of course continue hand-washing my tees. Oh, yesterday I stopped in the NY Columbus Circle B&M and almost caved on the Marrakesh tee, but when picked up the tee in a second color, it had hanging threads and beads. Must stick to my rules! The Marrakesh tee is quite cute.

Lauren S: I dislike the thin material as well, I sometimes end up wearing a thin tank underneath mine.

  5. I only have a few of the art tees...and no problems whatsoever so far. No holes, no stretching, etc. I get a lot of compliments on them and they're a great way to add some pizazz to an otherwise dull outfit. Don't think I would pay full price for one, but they're a nice wardrobe piece to have, for sure.

  7. I'm like Stacy -- I wear jeans & t-shirts to death. I have about 6 from JC, some with embellishments, and maybe I've just been lucky but haven't had any holes yet. I do prefer the printed-on images (like the market Ts) and do worry about the beaded ones ultimately tearing.

  8. I only own two that could be considered "art" tees, the snowflake from last year and this spring's ringspun rosette in pink. the snowflake tee has held up well and is really pretty. I like that it is not too Christmas-y, I can wear it past the holiday season. The ringspun rosette tee developed two tiny holes after the first handwashing, which was after a couple of wears. I repaired it but was disappointed.

I love the painter and perfect fit tees though. Excellent fit and I've never had a problem with any of them.

  9. OT - sale section is updated. I picked up the Jeweled garland bracelet in rosy peach & butterscotch, and the Multistrand fireball necklace. The HARVEST coupon did not work, so it looks as if the expiration date is indeed 11/23, and not 11/30 as originally stated in their emails.

  10. I love J.Crew's "perfect fit" line. Those are worth the price in my opinion because they ARE a perfect fit, haha... As for the art tees, I got the rose print one, (I'm too lazy to look up the exact name right now, haha) and it is holding up really well. It is nicely designed, and it feels good on. I got it with a 20% off promo, though.

  11. The only tees I have had any issues with are the tissue tees from last season (developed tiny holes toward the bottom of the tee). I don't know if I've been "trained" to be more careful with these tees since, but I haven't had further issues - they also tended to be the lighter tees (pink/blush and white) that I wore religiously throughout that summer.

Have a few embellished tees, but I'm lazy and only wear (and thus wash) them infrequently. Lots and lots of perfect fit tees and these to me are the best! I have them in a variety of colors, they are extremely figure flattering, and super comfortable. I don't find myself adjusting them in any way. They wash and wear beautifully and I wear these quite a bit! :) All were purchased on sale and they are an excellent compliment to cardigans.

  12. I love J Crew tees -- they are what brought me back to J Crew after not shopping there since college (about 20 years!) The majority of mine are in great shape and I can't resist anything with sparkle. Probably have at least 15 purchased in the past 12 months (yikes!!) HOWEVER, I recently found some amazing Crew-like shirts at Target for 12.99 each. They have great patterns, beading/ sequins and can't beat the price. I have one in purple, one in grey and one in an off white. I think Gigi's blog may have featured one of them. If they continue to make these shirts then I will definitely be shopping Target as an alternative to the full price Crew tees.

  13. The tees are really cute. But for the price I wish they were a bit less see through.

Can I just say the word "giftable" really bugs me?

  14. I love the look of the embellished tops but for a "hand wash" item they're super pricey. If one bead gets torn off or snagged, the whole tee goes to waste. I'd rather wait for them to drop down below $19.99.

I hope they have a great promo set for tomorrow!

  15. JCrew tees are WAY overpriced. I received a brand new one with little black marks in several places on the sleeve. Obvious, defective material was used. Tried to wash them out and no way would they budge. I am done with their overpriced tees. Another one had the embellishment place on crooked. So it is not just holes that are at the quality problem issues.

  16. I think the problem is that the new tissue tees that are popular lately are just too thin to last. J.Crew tees made with the thicker, more traditional cotton last forever and are definitely worth the price - though I do try to get them on sale of course.

  17. I love the embellished tees to a degree. So soft, and I love the fit... when I FIND the right one, that is... I feel like they all fit a little differently! I think there are too many similarities between a lot of them, though - they begin to all look the same. I only have about 4 because I try to make sure they look distinct from one another (so I won't look to indulgent? lol). I prefer them under cardigans as well.

The only quality issue I have had with the tees was with the chiffon rosette tee, which was a big disappointment. I was so excited to find it in shell and after one gentle hand wash, the flowers looked totally nasty. I returned it with no problem despite the fact that I had no tags or receipt because the cashier acknowledged it was clearly a quality issue... I have the beaded crawfish tee and really thought that one would be the one to fall apart, what with all that bling, but it is good as new after many wears and washes! I just ordered the reindeer tee though so we'll see if my track record endures :P

MY problem has been with the sweaters, esp. merino! They get so many snags and pills. Oh well.

  19. Note on the Cashmere Henley - if you size up, perhaps for a looser fit or to accommodate a thicker shirt, it does not look flattering from my experience. I'm returning mine for this reason.

On cardigans, I tend to order all over map, I have everything from M to XL as I think a loose button down cardigan is really cute with jeans and a shirt beneath. The loose Henley looks...bad, need fitted. Also, for us short waisted girls, it's a bit long. Love the big buttons though!
