J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Boyfriend shirt in vintage red plaid (f4555) - Didn’t try it on, but just wanted to note that it is not the thicker flannel of the navy Rockport plaid shirt (C9943) from last fall. This one is that thinner brushed cotton like the buffalo plaid shirt (E0696) from last fall. Colors looked true to the website image.

    Long downtown field jacket (f4497) - Lots to like about this one, IMO. Two-way zipper, detachable hood, side entry pockets, interior drawstring, brushed nickel (?) hardware on the navy as opposed to the gold hardware on the shorter version. Didn’t really love the corduroy collar, but because it’s the same color as the jacket it’s hard to notice. Water did bead up on the jacket.

    Relaxed popover shirt in gingham (f4444) - I found this to be TTS but a bit too boxy with a high neckline for my taste. There were quite a few funny fabric tucks (you can see these on the side hem) and a covered placket that would probably not ever lay straight again after a wash - just an FYI if you don’t care to iron.

    Ruffled dress in textured clip-dot (f6949) - Very cute, fit TTS (body skimming, not at all clingy). I found it to be almost too short (I’m 5’5”) and thought it was adorable with flats but wouldn’t wear it with heels. ETA: Just saw that it’s available in Tall - may give that a try out of curiosity.

    Sammie chino pant (f4323) - Liked the cut on these, but couldn’t decide on a size. 28 fit just right, 27 was a teeny bit tight, but would they stretch out? Would the 28 get too baggy?

    1. Thanks for the great reviews, silver_lining, I found many of the details that you pointed out super helpful (collar on Field jacket, fabric on the Vintage plaid).

      Re) the Sammies -- I know your predicament, just encountered the same thing myself last week. I tried my usual JC chino size, which fit quite comfortably, but b/c they are a tad high-waisted, they seemed to highlight how flat my bum is, so it was quite unflatttering. I went down a size and though tighter in the waist, the fit was better everywhere else. I stuck with the smaller size, in anticipation of these bagging out a bit, especially in the back.

    2. Thanks for the review of the Long Downtown Field Jacket. I am very interested in it. I just purchased the Field Mechanic Jacket but think I may like this one better.....

    3. Hi Nic G - I actually thought I would like the Field Mechanic better, but for me it's one of those pieces where the S feels too big, but the XS feels too small. Also, the combination of thick hood, chest pockets and upper arm pocket just brought too much to my upper body. The pockets in the long downtown field jacket just felt more practical.

    4. Silver_lining: I agree with you. I didn't care for the Long Downtown Field Jacket when I tried it on in navy but when I tried it on in the green, I fell in love!! I have a long bob and my hair kept getting caught up in the thick hood/collar of the Field Mechanic Jacket and I always felt a mess! Silly it sounds but it just felt so bulky on me. I love the silhouette of the long jacket. It's a great piece and I like that it seems to be a bit more relaxed in fit than the shorter version which makes it so comfortable!

  2. I'm wearing the Factory Teddie stripe embroidered birdie sweater today. I am in love with this sweater! It's 100% cotton, it fits perfectly - just skims the body, not too tight, not too boxy. The sleeve length is perfect - not short enough to where I am pushing up my sleeves but not long enough to where I have to roll them, either. Am I a 36 year-old lady wearing a sweater with a birdie on it to work? YUP. It's super-cute, I had to have it & I am glad I picked it up! It will be great to layer when the weather gets chilly, too. Love love love.

    1. Taylor, I have this sweater too and I'm older than you. Cute critter sweaters/tees are just my thing. Isn't it a great sweater? I love the cotton fabric and the fit is just right. It's still 85 degrees and humid as hell here but I'm hoping it will cool off soon so I can wear it.

    2. @shopalot I also own the Factory fox in sunglasses sweater from last year, hee hee. It's 90-some outside here in SW VA but feels like 50 in my office - this sweater is perfect for today! :)

    3. I hear you re: temperatures, Taylor! The blasting air conditioning on the commuter train and the office means I'm wearing a cardigan every.single.day.

    4. Taylor, thank you for the review and I think we can all rock critter sweaters - who is going to tell us not to? I'd like to know what you paired it with?

  3. Not a review but just need some JCA consolation! Thought I placed my unworn JC cashmere still covered in their plastic bag out of reach from critters (the one I got end of season and haven't worn) but when I pulled it out from doing some closet reorganization....saw a hole :(!!! Agh!!! It's small and fixable but still............Why do those critters have such expensive taste?!!! So, now I'm a little paranoid and going to go thru all my stored sweaters.... does anyone have a foolproof way to prevent "moth larvae, carpet beetle, silverfish, cricket" holes?? The plastic wasn't completely sealed just sort of folded over with a single tape (you know how the j crew packages come in) so I guess they can get into any openings. The annoying thing is I never see them....but maybe they eat and run...argh.

    1. That stinks! I have problems with that sometimes too. I'm not sure if this is foolproof (but it worked last year), but I started keeping my sweaters in plastic storage bins with a few cedar satchels dispersed throughout. I guess I will be getting them out in a couple months to see if it worked again.

    2. Boo to sweater munching critters! I use the same storage system as Lauren - plastic storage bins and cedar bricks (Bed Bath & Beyond) inside the bins.

    3. Yay to critters on sweaters, boo to critters eating them. I keep all of mine in plastic storage tubs, folded, with the lids on tight. I've never had an issue.

    4. I use watertight totes with lavender sachets inside. But I think the important part is the watertight seal.

    5. I use oversize ziplock bags and spray the sweaters with the J Crew (Laundress) cashmere spray before putting them into storage for the summer.

    6. I use cotton canvas backed zip bags, plastic front. I'm paranoid, so I spray periodically with lavendar cedar spray from Container Store.

  4. Bought the Tie Waist Leopard Skirt f5852 in a 4 petite. The length was better but the waist was tighter than the regular 4 (I am 5' 2" and weight 125) so I exchanged it at the store. The salesperson said to go up to a 6 petite for future purchases. I am just going to have the regular 4 altered at this point. For some silly reason I thought that petites would just be shorter in length, not over all smaller. She also told me that they only found out about the Nordstrom's info yesterday by email! Crazy!

    The Wild Flamingo Rhodes Blazer in petite is still gone from the website. When I called they said they cannot tell when more will be in. Makes me sad !

    1. Yes, JC petite sizing is weird--petites run almost a full size smaller than the same number in regular. Like 3/4 of a size smaller. I'm usually a size 0 in perfect shirts, for instance, but 2P.

    2. The conversion size is always one up.

      4 = 6P
      6 = 8P
      8 = 10P

      Etc... The body measurements are usually the same in petite vs regular. It's the arm, skirt and pant lengths that definitely differ.

  5. Collection Striped Sweater Dress: Really liked this dress when it was released, but sold out quickly. So, I stalked it & finally scored after it went on sale. Sizing is so off. I'm normally a medium (Size 8)and an XS fits comfortably; I'm sure I could even size down to an XXS with no problem. This material is sooooo stretchy. The sale price was < $60, so worth the purchase.

    Stripe Sailor Pant: After seeing these pants on the IG of SartorialChoices, I decided to give these pants a second look. I ordered a size 8 when it popped back & fit is tts; they're high wasted but easy to get in & out of with the buttons. Fabric is a nicely weighted cotton. The pleated detail down the front pant leg is a really nice detail; the lace detail in the back is not a detractor and is actually ok. This was my concern about the pants. Recommend if you can catch them as a popback since they're on sale.

  6. Hi, everyone, for some silly reason, I've fallen in love with the cocktail shirt/blouse. Maybe the mismatched stripes? Has anyone seen it in person? Has anyone even tried it on? Thanks.
